There is an evident need to develop the strategic capabilities of companies from within, to ensure competitive competence in a time where strategy is a necessity. This paper is based on the first 4 months of a longitudinal embedded case study of a family-owned Australian small to medium enterprise, in their journey towards design integration. The first author was embedded as a ‘Design Innovation Catalyst’ to collaborate on overcoming early barriers of strategic development, using design led innovation. Action research methodology, semi-structured interviews with seven out of eight employees and a reflective journal revealed the absence of a shared vision, conflicting drivers and a focus on operational efficiency rather than strategy. Through the Catalyst’s facilitation, a company vision, general awareness, practice and knowledge in strategic development have emerged as the first steps to generating strategic design competence within the firm.

Lean strategies have been developed to eliminate or reduce waste and thus improve operational efficiency in a manufacturing environment. However, in practice, manufacturers encounter difficulties to select appropriate lean strategies within their resource constraints and to quantitatively evaluate the perceived value of manufacturing waste reduction. This paper presents a methodology developed to quantitatively evaluate the contribution of lean strategies selected to reduce manufacturing wastes within the manufacturers’ resource (time) constraints. A mathematical model has been developed for evaluating the perceived value of lean strategies to manufacturing waste reduction and a step-by-step methodology is provided for selecting appropriate lean strategies to improve the manufacturing performance within their resource constraints. A computer program is developed in MATLAB for finding the optimum solution. With the help of a case study, the proposed methodology and developed model has been validated. A ‘lean strategy-wastes’ correlation matrix has been proposed to establish the relationship between the manufacturing wastes and lean strategies. Using the correlation matrix and applying the proposed methodology and developed mathematical model, authors came out with optimised perceived value of reduction of a manufacturer's wastes by implementing appropriate lean strategies within a manufacturer's resources constraints. Results also demonstrate that the perceived value of reduction of manufacturing wastes can significantly be changed based on policies and product strategy taken by a manufacturer. The proposed methodology can also be used in dynamic situations by changing the input in the programme developed in MATLAB. By identifying appropriate lean strategies for specific manufacturing wastes, a manufacturer can better prioritise implementation efforts and resources to maximise the success of implementing lean strategies in their organisation.

Process modelling is an integral part of any process industry. Several sugar factory models have been developed over the years to simulate the unit operations. An enhanced and comprehensive milling process simulation model has been developed to analyse the performance of the milling train and to assess the impact of changes and advanced control options for improved operational efficiency. The developed model is incorporated in a proprietary software package ‘SysCAD’. As an example, the milling process model has been used to predict a significant loss of extraction by returning the cush from the juice screen before #3 mill instead of before #2 mill as is more commonly done. Further work is being undertaken to more accurately model extraction processes in a milling train, to examine extraction issues dynamically and to integrate the model into a whole factory model.

In common with many other countries, Australian local government policymakers have focussed heavily on improving financial sustainability and operational efficiency through structural change and other modes of systemic reform. However, this system-wide approach cannot adequately deal with small island councils due to their sui generis characteristics. In an effort to fill this gap in the literature, this article examines the financial sustainability of Australia’s three island councils – Flinders, Kangaroo and King – over the period 2008–2013 in order to determine whether alternative organisational arrangements may be better suited to their unique circumstances. In so doing, our study contributes to the literature by providing the first empirical analysis of the financial viability of Australia’s island councils while considering the need for an alternative organisation entity in an effort to enhance their long-term financial sustainability.

Physical activity (PA) is essential for human health and wellbeing across all age, socioeconomic and ethnic groups. Engagement with the natural world is a new defining criterion for enhancing the benefits of PA particularly for children and young people. Interacting with nature benefits children’s social and emotional wellbeing, develops resilience and reduces the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes across all population groups. Governments around the world are now recognising the importance of children spending more active time outdoors. However, children’s outdoor activities, free play and nature-related exploration are often structured and supervised by adults due to safety concerns and risks. In this context schools become more accessible and safe options for children to engage in PA outdoors with the presence of nature features. Research on school designs involving young children has revealed that children prefer nature-related features in school environments. Affordances in nature may increase children’s interest in physically active behaviours. Given that present school campuses are designed for operational efficiency and economic reasons there is a need to re-design schools responding to the positive role of nature on human health. If schools were re-designed to incorporate diverse natural features children’s PA and consequent health and wellbeing would likely improve markedly.

The history of software development in a somewhat systematical way has been performed for half a century. Despite this time period, serious failures in software development projects still occur. The pertinent mission of software project management is to continuously achieve more and more successful projects. The application of agile software methods and more recently the integration of Lean practices contribute to this trend of continuous improvement in the software industry. One such area warranting proper empirical evidence is the operational efficiency of projects. In the field of software development, Kanban as a process management method has gained momentum recently, mostly due to its linkages to Lean thinking. However, only a few empirical studies investigate the impacts of Kanban on projects in that particular area. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to improve the understanding of how Kanban impacts on software projects. The research is carried out in the area of Lean thinking, which contains a variety of concepts including Kanban. This article-type thesis conducts a set of case studies expanded with the research strategy of quasi-controlled experiment. The data-gathering techniques of interviews, questionnaires, and different types of observations are used to study the case projects, and thereby to understand the impacts of Kanban on software development projects. The research papers of the thesis are refereed, international journal and conference publications. The results highlight new findings regarding the application of Kanban in the software context. The key findings of the thesis suggest that Kanban is applicable to software development. Despite its several benefits reported in this thesis, the empirical evidence implies that Kanban is not all-encompassing but requires additional practices to keep development projects performing appropriately. Implications for research are given, as well. In addition to these findings, the thesis contributes in the area of plan-driven software development by suggesting implications both for research and practitioners. As a conclusion, Kanban can benefit software development projects but additional practices would increase its potential for the projects.

No Brasil, entre as áreas protegidas e regulamentadas por lei estão às denominadas Unidades de Conservação (UC) e são definidas assim por possuírem características ambientais, estéticas, históricas ou culturais relevantes, importantes na manutenção dos ciclos naturais, demandando regimes especiais de preservação, conservação ou exploração racional dos seus recursos. O Parque Estadual da Serra da Tiririca (PESET), criado pela Lei 1.901, de 29 de novembro de 1991 localizado entre os municípios de Niterói e Maricá no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, enquadra-se na categoria de UC de Proteção Integral abrigando uma extensa faixa de Mata Atlântica em seus limites. Para a presente pesquisa foi feita uma classificação de Uso da terra e cobertura vegetal, refinada por pesquisas feitas através do trabalho de campo, que subsidiou a elaboração da proposta de Zoneamento Ambiental para o parque. O processamento digital da imagem foi feito utilizando-se o sistema SPRING desenvolvido pelo Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE). A confecção dos mapas temáticos foi feita com apoio do sistema Arcgis desenvolvido pela ESRI. O Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG) foi empregado para as modelagens ambientais. Nessa etapa foram consideradas, de forma integrada, a variabilidade taxonômica, a expressão territorial e as alterações temporais verificáveis em uma base de dados georreferenciada. A tecnologia SIG integra operações convencionais de bases de dados, relativas ao armazenamento, manipulação, análise, consulta e apresentação de dados, com possibilidades de seleção e busca de informações e suporte à análise geoestatística, conjuntamente com a possibilidade de visualização de mapas sofisticados e de análise espacial proporcionada pelos mapas. A opção por esta tecnologia busca potencializar a eficiência operacional e permitir planejamento estratégico e administração de problemas, tanto minimizando os custos operacionais como acelerando processos decisórios. O estudo feito através da modelagem computacional do PESET apresentará o emprego das técnicas amplamente utilizadas no monitoramento ambiental, sendo úteis aos profissionais destinados à gestão e aos tomadores de decisão no âmbito das políticas públicas relacionadas à gestão ambiental de Unidades de Conservação.

Water service providers (WSPs) in the UK have statutory obligations to supply drinking water to all customers that complies with increasingly stringent water quality regulations and minimum flow and pressure criteria. At the same time, the industry is required by regulators and investors to demonstrate increasing operational efficiency and to meet a wide range of performance criteria that are expected to improve year-on-year. Most WSPs have an ideal for improving the operation of their water supply systems based on increased knowledge and understanding of their assets and a shift to proactive management followed by steadily increasing degrees of system monitoring, automation and optimisation. The fundamental mission is, however, to ensure security of supply, with no interruptions and water quality of the highest standard at the tap. Unfortunately, advanced technologies required to fully understand, manage and automate water supply system operation either do not yet exist, are only partially evolved, or have not yet been reliably proven for live water distribution systems. It is this deficiency that the project NEPTUNE seeks to address by carrying out research into 3 main areas; these are: data and knowledge management; pressure management (including energy management); and the associated complex decision support systems on which to base interventions. The 3-year project started in April of 2007 and has already resulted in a number of research findings under the three main research priority areas (RPA). The paper summarises in greater detail the overall project objectives, the RPA activities and the areas of research innovation that are being undertaken in this major, UK collaborative study. Supply chain tracking information is one of the main levers for achieving operational efficiency. RFID technology and the EPC Network can deliver serial-level product information that was never before available. However, these technologies still fail to meet the managers' visibility requirements in full, since they provide information about product location at specific time instances only. This paper proposes a model that uses the data provided by the EPC Network to deliver enhanced tracking information to the final user. Following a Bayesian approach, the model produces realistic ongoing estimates about the current and future location of products across a supply network, taking into account the characteristics of the product behavior and the configuration of the data collection points. These estimates can then be used to optimize operational decisions that depend on product availability at different locations. The enhancement of tracking information quality is highlighted through an example. © 2009 IFAC.

The October 2015 Food and Beverage Entrepreneurship Roundtable brought together over 30 food and beverage industry leaders, entrepreneurs, faculty, and students at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. Discussion topics covered entrepreneurship in the food and beverage industry, including development, intrapreneurship, operational efficiency, beverage product development, and technology. The roundtable began with the presentation of a five-point framework on food and beverage venue development. The first three phases focused on the launch of a venue, including how to define the guest experience; the creation of operational functionality by strategically planning out the design, flow, and efficiency of a defined space; and development capacity. The remaining two points of the framework focused on post-opening considerations, including operating systems and culture development. Participants discussed the importance of culture in the growth of a business. They suggested that intrapreneurship needs to be fostered in the culture of an organization and in an educational curriculum for those who are preparing to enter the industry. Participants also discussed the fine balance between setting expectations for an experience and subsequently being able to maintain this experience in a fast changing environment. In particular they considered what it means to say no to customers. A discussion on the beverage industry focused on how to distribute products in a crowded marketplace. One method to ensure that the product gets into the hands of the consumers is face-to-face sales. Finally, in the technology session, the group discussed technology adoption, specifically focusing on the point at which technology detracts from the guest experience, how to minimize operational risk from technology, and how to maximize consumers’ adoption rates.

A gestão de stocks tem-se tornado uma ferramenta fundamental na racionalização de custos das empresas permitindo uma maior eficiência operacional. Os modelos de gestão de stocks procuram ajudar a determinar as quantidades a encomendar e quando encomendar, com um custo total de aprovisionamento mínimo. Este trabalho visa o estudo da gestão de stocks, dos modelos existentes e a aplicação de um deles num prestador de saúde, em particular, na área da imagiologia. Neste estudo optou-se por efectuar a classificação ABC dos produtos e posteriormente procurou-se definir o modelo de gestão de stocks que melhor se adeqúe à realidade empresarial em estudo de modo a manter o nível de stock correcto associado a um menor custo. Optou-se pelo modelo de revisão periódica de stocks que permite efectuar a encomenda sempre com o mesmo intervalo de tempo e efectuar ajustes nas quantidades necessárias. Com base nos dados fornecido efectuou-se uma previsão da procura e assim definiram-se as quantidades a encomendar, bem como o stock de segurança necessário. Implementaram-se as quantidades e o stock de segurança e efectuou-se uma avaliação dos resultados obtidos e analisou-se o impacto da gestão de stocks no prestador de saúde.

No âmbito da unidade curricular Dissertação do 2ºano do Mestrado em Engenharia mecânica – Ramo de Gestão Industrial do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, o presente trabalho de dissertação foi enquadrado num projeto industrial para a racionalização de uma linha de produção. O projeto foi desenvolvido numa empresa de produção de componentes por alumínio injetado e seguidamente processos de maquinação, para mercados a nível mundial destinados à indústria automóvel. A realização deste projeto teve como objetivo a melhoria de uma linha de produção na empresa TESCO Componentes para automóveis, Lda. recorrendo a métodos e ferramentas utilizadas pela Gestão Industrial tais como, Lean, 5’S, PDCA assim como ferramentas específicas de balanceamento e otimização de linhas. Os métodos e ferramentas utilizados permitiram a seleção da linha, a definição e caraterização do modelo em produção e posto de trabalho, isto com o objetivo reduzir os custos, aumentar a produtividade e conduzir a melhorias ao nível de qualidade. Através de análises realizadas aos dados de produção foi possível a avaliação do indicador de eficiência operacional do equipamento, através dos OEE’s, o que possibilitou uma análise mais compreensiva da capacidade e cadência da linha de produção. Com a aplicação dos métodos ligados à filosofia de produção em Lean, foi possível atingir-se os objetivos inicialmente definidos, e em alguns casos foi possível ultrapassá-los. Em função da abordagem integrada que foi seguida, conseguiu-se uma redução de um posto de trabalho, traduzindo-se na redução do custo de fabrico não deixando de referir que também houve melhorias a nível de qualidade do produto. Reduzindo a possibilidade de falhas com as especificações estabelecidas pelos clientes. Como efeito positivo deste projeto pode-se apontar o fato de que a empresa Tesco Componentes para Automóveis, Lda. aumentou a sua competitividade com a oportunidade de redução do preço final do produto e também com o aumento da qualidade do mesmo.
