The complex [Cu-II (theo)(2)(H2O)(3)].2H(2)O (theo = theophylline) was obtained from aqueous solution. The crystals belong to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, and are reflection twins about the (001) face. The structure was solved using data from a twinned crystal and refined to final R and R(W) values of 0.069 and 0.064, respectively. Copper has a square-pyramidal coordination with two thee molecules coordinating through N(7) at equatorial positions. The remaining sites are occupied by water molecules. O(6) of one of the thee molecules is at the other axial site at a longer distance of 3.18 Angstrom. This could lead to an alternate (4+1+1) octahedral coordination geometry for Cu-II. The packing is stabilized by stacking interactions between the theophylline moieties at an average separation of 3.46 Angstrom.

The synthesis, molecular structure, DNA binding and nuclease activity of Cu4O4 open-cubane tetranuclear copper(II) complex with 3-2-(ethyl amino)ethyl]imino]-2-butanoneoxime (HL) are reported for the first time. The neutral tetranuclear Cu4L4(ClO4)(4)] complex crystallizes in tetragonal space group P (4) over bar2(1)c with the unit cell parameters; a = 13.798(4) angstrom, b = 13.798(4) angstrom, c = 14.119(6) angstrom, V = 2688(16) angstrom(3), Z = 8, R = 0.0636. Symmetrically equivalent copper atoms exhibit a CuN3O3 elongated distorted octahedral coordination environment, with three nitrogen atoms of the L ligand and one oxime-oxygen atom of second L ligand at equatorial positions, one oxime-oxygen atom of the third L ligand and perchlorate oxygen at axial positions. The complex shows quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response at 0.805 V (Delta E-p = 277 mV) at 100 mV s (1) in DMF for the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The binding study of the complex with calf-thymus DNA has been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The complex shows strong nuclease activity on stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and marginal nuclease activity in the presence of reducing agent (dithiothreitol). A new dinuclear cadmium(II) complex, Cd(L)(NCS)](2) (1) has been synthesized using a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand HL, 2-((E)-(2-(diethylamino) ethylimino) methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, obtained by the condensation of 2-diethylaminoethylamine and o-vanillin, and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. Crystal structure of the title complex was unambiguously established by single crystal X-ray diffraction which reveals that metal centers are connected by bridging phenolato and chelating methoxy oxygen atoms of the coordinating Schiff bases and embedded in severely distorted octahedral geometries. Fluorescence properties of the ligand and its complex, studied at room temperature indicate that later may serve as strong fluorescent

Ligational behaviour of (E)-2-amino-N'-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]benzohydrazide (Aheb) towards later 3d metal ionscopper(II), cobalt(II), manganese(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II) and nickel(IV)] has been studied. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral (IR, H-1 NMR, UV-Vis, EPR and FAB-mass), elemental analyses, conductance measurements, magnetic moments, and thermal studies. During complexation Ni(II) ion has got oxidized to Ni(IV). The changes in the bond parameters of the ligand on complexation has been discussed by comparing the crystal structure of the ligand with that of its Ni(IV) complex. The X-ray single crystal analysis of Ni(aheb)(2)]Cl-2 center dot 4H(2)O has confirmed an octahedral geometry around the metal ion. EPR spectra of the Cu(II) complex in polycrystalline state at room (300 K) and liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) were recorded and their salient features are reported. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Iron(III)-Schiff base complexes, namely, Fe(tsc-py)(2)](NO3) (1), Fe(tsc-acpy)(2)](NO3) (2) and Fe(tsc-VB6)(2)](NO3) (3), where tsc-py, tsc-acpy and tsc-VB6 are the respective Schiff bases derived from thiosemicarbazide (tsc) and pyridine-2-aldehyde (tsc-py), 2-acetyl pyridine (tsc-acpy) and vitamin B-6 (pyridoxal, tsc-VB6), have been prepared, structurally characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied in cancer HeLa cells. The single crystal X-ray structures of the complexes 1 and 2 show a distorted octahedral geometry formed by the FeN4S2 core. The low-spin and 1 : 1 electrolytic complexes display a broad absorption band in the visible region. Complexes 1 and 2, without any VB6 moiety are not cytotoxic under light or dark conditions. Complex 3 is significantly photocytotoxic under visible light of 400-700 nm giving an IC50 value of 22.5 mu M in HeLa cells with no dark toxicity (IC50 > 100 mu M). The photo-induced cell death is attributable to apoptotic pathways involving photo-assisted generation of intracellular ROS. The observed photocytotoxicity of complex 3 could be the result of its better photosensitizing property combined with its enhanced uptake into cancer cells via a VB6 transporting membrane carrier (VTC) mediated diffusion pathway due to the presence of the VB6 moiety compared to the two non-vitamin B-6 analogues, complexes 1 and 2.

Photoactive metal complexes have emerged as potential candidates in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. We present here the synthesis, characterization and visible light-triggered anticancer activity of two novel mixed-ligand oxo-bridged iron(III) complexes, viz., {Fe(L)(acac)}(2)(mu-O)](ClO4)(2) (1) and {Fe (L)(cur)}(2)(mu-O)](ClO4)(2) (2) where L is bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-benzylamine, acac is acetylacetonate and cur is the monoanion of curcumin (bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-diene-3,5-dione). The crystal structure of complex 1 (as PF6 salt, 1a) shows distorted octahedral geometry of each iron(III) centre formed by the FeN3O3 core. The 1: 2 electrolytic complexes are stable in solution and retain their oxo-bridged identity in aqueous medium. Complex 2 has a strong absorption band in the visible region and shows promising photocytotoxicity in HeLa and MCF-7 cancer cells in visible light giving respective IC50 values of 3.1 +/- 0.4 lM and 4.9 +/- 0.5 lM while remains non-toxic in the dark (IC50 > 50 lM). The control complex 1 is inactive both in the light and dark. Complex 2 accumulates in cytoplasm of HeLa and MCF-7 cells as evidenced from fluorescence microscopy and triggers apoptotic cell death via light-assisted generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Taken together, complex 2 with its promising photocytotoxicity but negligible dark toxicity in cancer cells has significant photochemotherapeutic potential for applications in PDT. Complex transition-metal oxides are important functional materials in areas such as energy and information storage. The cubic ABO3 perovskite is an archetypal example of this class, formed by the occupation of small octahedral B-sites within an AO3 network defined by larger A cations. We show that introduction of chemically mismatched octahedral cations into a cubic perovskite oxide parent phase modifies structure and composition beyond the unit cell length scale on the B sublattice alone. This affords an endotaxial nanocomposite of two cubic perovskite phases with distinct properties. These locally B-site cation-ordered and -disordered phases share a single AO3 network and have enhanced stability against the formation of a competing hexagonal structure over the single-phase parent. Synergic integration of the distinct properties of these phases by the coherent interfaces of the composite produces solid oxide fuel cell cathode performance superior to that expected from the component phases in isolation.

Ba1.6Ca2.3Y1.1Fe5O13 is an Fe3+ oxide adopting a complex perovskite superstructure, which is an ordered intergrowth between the Ca2Fe2O5 and YBa2Fe3O8 structures featuring octahedral, square pyramidal, and tetrahedral B sites and three distinct A site environments. The distribution of A site cations was evaluated by combined neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. Consistent with the Fe3+ charge state, the material is an antiferromagnetic insulator with a Néel temperature of 480-485 °C and has a relatively low d.c. conductivity of 2.06 S cm-1 at 700 °C. The observed area specific resistance in symmetrical cell cathodes with the samarium-doped ceria electrolyte is 0.87 Ω cm2 at 700 °C, consistent with the square pyramidal Fe3+ layer favoring oxide ion formation and mobility in the oxygen reduction reaction. Density functional theory calculations reveal factors favoring the observed cation ordering and its influence on the electronic structure, in particular the frontier occupied and unoccupied electronic states. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

An asymmetrical double Schiff-base Cu(II) mononuclear complex, HCuLp (H(3)Lp is N-3-carboxylsalicylidene-N'-5-chlorosalicylaldehyde-1,3-diaminopropane) and a heterometal trinuclear complex with double molecular structure (CuLp)(2)Co center dot 5H(2)O have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR and electronic spectra. The crystal structure of the heterotrinucler complex was determined by X-ray analysis. Each asymmetric unit within the unit cell of the complex contains two heterotrinuclear neutral molecules (a) [CuLpCoCuLp], (b) [(CuLpH(2)O) CoCuLp] and four uncoordinated water molecules. In the two neutral molecules, the central Co2+ ions are located at the site of O-6 with a distorted octahedral geometry, one terminal Cu2+ ion (Cu(3)) at the square-pyramidal environment of N2O3, and the other three at the square planar coordination geometry with N2O2 donor atoms. Magnetic properties of the heterotrinucler complex have been determined in the temperature range 5-300 K, indicating that the interaction between the central Co2+ ion and the outer Co2+ ions is antiferromagnetic.

The oxamido-bridged heterobinuclear copper(II)-nickel(II) complex, [Cu(oxbe)Ni(phen)(2)]ClO4.3H(2)O (1) and homotrinuclear nickel(11) complex {[Ni(oxbe)](2)Ni(H2O)(2)}.2.5DMF (2) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, EPR. and electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility, where H(3)oxbe is dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)ox-amido, phen = 1.10-phenanthroline, DMF = dimethylformamide. Complex I has an extended oxamido-bridged structure consisting of planar copper(II) and octahedral nickel(II) ions. The chi(M) and mu(eff) versus T plots of 1 is typical of an antiferromagnetically coupled Cu(II)-Ni(II,) pair with a spin-doublet ground state, and magnetic analysis leads to J = -57.1 cm(-1). The molecular structure of 2 is centrosymmetrical, with one octahedral nickel atom lying at an inversion center and two terminal Ni(II) atoms in approximately square planar environment. Through the hydrogen bonds and pi- pi stacking interactions, a 2D supramolecular structure is formed.

A new Er(III)-Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)(6)(NO3)](NO3). 3.5H(2)O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, P (1) over bar with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Angstrom; alpha = 98.49(3), beta = 101.40(3), gamma = 108.69(3)degrees; V = 2284(1) Angstrom(3); Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridged dimeric sodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.
