Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is a well-known summer holidays destination; an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sun and the sea. That tourist gaze reflected on postcards results from advertising campaigns, where cinema played an important role with documentaries and fiction films. The origins of that iconography started in the decades of the 1920’s and 1930’s, reflecting the so-called myth of the “island of calm”. On the other hand, the films of the 1950’s and 1960’s created new stereotypes related to the mass tourism boom. Busy beaches and the white bodies of tourists replaced white sandy beaches, mountains and landscapes shown up in the movies of the early decades of the 20th century. Besides, hotels and nightclubs also replaced monuments, rural landscapes and folk exhibitions. These tourist images mirror the social and spatial transformations of Mallorca, under standardization processes like other seaside mass tourist destinations. The identity was rebuilt on the foundations of "modernity". Although "balearization" has not ceased, nowadays filmmaking about Mallorca is advertising again a stereotype close to that one of the 1920s and 1930s, glorifying the myth of the "island of calm". This singular identity makes the island more profitable for capital that searches socio-spatial differentiation in post-fordist times.

OBJETIVO: El presente estudio tiene como objetivo determinar las conductas de riesgo de los adolescentes escolarizados que frecuentan los bares y discotecas de la “Calle Larga” de la ciudad de Cuenca (Calle del Centro Histórico, donde se sitúa la mayor cantidad de centros de diversión nocturna). MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, de tipo cuantitativo, transversal. Incluye un universo de 307 adolescentes, del Cantón Cuenca en el año 2014. (1) Los datos fueron recolectados mediante un formulario validado, que fue aplicado previo asentimiento y/o consentimiento informado de los adolescentes entre 10 y 19 años que acuden a “La Calle Larga” los días viernes y sábados durante el mes de Mayo del año 2014. RESULTADOS: En el estudio encontramos que el 67,75% de adolescentes ingiere alcohol, el 28,66% fuma cigarrillo y el 8.79% fuma marihuana, siendo ésta la sustancia ilícita de elección. CONCLUSIONES: La prevalencia de consumo para alcohol, cigarrillo y otras drogas en los adolescentes que asisten a sitios de diversión nocturna en la “Calle Larga”, Cuenca mayo 2014, fue mayor en la adolescencia tardía y constituyen conductas de riesgo la compañía de los amigos. Aims: Little is known about the social and functional aspects of alcohol mixed with energy drink(AmED) consumption. Using a functional substance use perspective and via the lens of socialidentity theory, this paper aims to explore the role of AmED consumption amongst the milieuof nightlife and party culture. Methods: Twenty-five regular AmED consumers aged 18–33participated in semi-structured interviews. Qualitative thematic analysis of transcripts wasundertaken, with a focus on the social contexts and perceived functions of AmED consumption,group dynamics and social identity. Findings: Three main themes were identified: (i) AmED usewas restricted to specific social contexts, (ii) AmED use performed a social function and(iii) AmED users identified with a coherent and consistent social identity. AmED use was almostexclusively reported to occur within group drinking scenarios at parties and licensed venues,particularly nightclubs. AmED users identified with a clear and consistent social identity thatwas distinct from other alcohol consumers, typified by gregarious and extroverted behaviour.AmED use was seen to facilitate these ideals and strengthen group cohesion in appropriatecontexts. Conclusions: Future efforts aiming to elicit changes in AmED consumption practices must account for the fundamental importance of social contexts to AmED use.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study was to assess correlates of intoxication in licensed venues in Australia. METHODS: Covert observations of licensed venues and venue patron in night-time entertainment districts of five Australian cities were conducted. In total, 828 unique cross-sectional observations were completed across 62 bars, nightclubs, and large mainstream pubs. Venues were selected from the main entertainment district of smaller cities and the busiest entertainment districts of larger cities. Outcomes were the estimated percentage of patrons showing any signs of alcohol intoxication and the overall level of intoxication ('high' versus 'none to medium'). Seven predictors of patron intoxication were examined: hour of observation; estimated percentage of male patrons; estimated percentage of patrons <25 years old; venue crowding; presence of observable alcohol promotions; type of alcoholic beverage consumed by the majority of patrons; and, venue type. RESULTS: Time of night (coefficient=11.71, p<.001; OR=9.61, p<.001), percentage of patrons aged <25 (coefficient=0.14, p<.001; OR=1.01, p=.031), and venue crowding (coefficient=4.40, p<.001; OR=1.39, p=.009) had significant positive associations with both signs of intoxication and high levels of intoxication. Nightclubs had a lower percentage of signs of intoxication compared to pubs (coefficient=-10.73, p=.021). Increased percentage of male patrons was associated with increased odds of high-level intoxication (OR=1.05, p=.020). CONCLUSION: Time of night and proportion of younger patrons had a strong association with patron intoxication adding further support for the strong body of evidence that ceasing service of alcohol earlier in the evening will reduce intoxication levels.

This thesis explores the social contexts and harms of combined alcohol and energy drink use. Findings show that these drinks are exclusively a social drink, are consumed in social groups, and are associated with heavier binge drinking sessions and celebrations. Consumers report being driven by intoxication modification and hedonistic motives. Consumers also report increased rates of many side effects, including cardiac issues and symptoms of anxiety and stress.
