Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have excellent potential to improve the regular operation and maintenance of structures. Wireless networks (WNs) have been used to avoid the high cost of traditional generic wired systems. The most important limitation of SHM wireless systems is time-synchronization accuracy, scalability, and reliability. A complete wireless system for structural identification under environmental load is designed, implemented, deployed, and tested on three different real bridges. Our contribution ranges from the hardware to the graphical front end. System goal is to avoid the main limitations of WNs for SHM particularly in regard to reliability, scalability, and synchronization. We reduce spatial jitter to 125 ns, far below the 120 μs required for high-precision acquisition systems and much better than the 10-μs current solutions, without adding complexity. The system is scalable to a large number of nodes to allow for dense sensor coverage of real-world structures, only limited by a compromise between measurement length and mandatory time to obtain the final result. The system addresses a myriad of problems encountered in a real deployment under difficult conditions, rather than a simulation or laboratory test bed.

Network security monitoring remains a challenge. As global networks scale up, in terms of traffic, volume and speed, effective attribution of cyber attacks is increasingly difficult. The problem is compounded by a combination of other factors, including the architecture of the Internet, multi-stage attacks and increasing volumes of nonproductive traffic. This paper proposes to shift the focus of security monitoring from the source to the target. Simply put, resources devoted to detection and attribution should be redeployed to efficiently monitor for targeting and prevention of attacks. The effort of detection should aim to determine whether a node is under attack, and if so, effectively prevent the attack. This paper contributes by systematically reviewing the structural, operational and legal reasons underlying this argument, and presents empirical evidence to support a shift away from attribution to favour of a target-centric monitoring approach. A carefully deployed set of experiments are presented and a detailed analysis of the results is achieved.

Accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis is temporally and spatially coordinated by fidelity-monitoring checkpoint systems. Deficiencies in these checkpoint systems can lead to chromosome segregation errors and aneuploidy, and promote tumorigenesis. Here, we report that the TRAF-interacting protein (TRAIP), a ubiquitously expressed nucleolar E3 ubiquitin ligase important for cellular proliferation, is localized close to mitotic chromosomes. Its knockdown in HeLa cells by RNA interference (RNAi) decreased the time of early mitosis progression from nuclear envelope breakdown (NEB) to anaphase onset and increased the percentages of chromosome alignment defects in metaphase and lagging chromosomes in anaphase compared with those of control cells. The decrease in progression time was corrected by the expression of wild-type but not a ubiquitin-ligase-deficient form of TRAIP. TRAIP-depleted cells bypassed taxol-induced mitotic arrest and displayed significantly reduced kinetochore levels of MAD2 (also known as MAD2L1) but not of other spindle checkpoint proteins in the presence of nocodazole. These results imply that TRAIP regulates the spindle assembly checkpoint, MAD2 abundance at kinetochores and the accurate cellular distribution of chromosomes. The TRAIP ubiquitin ligase activity is functionally required for the spindle assembly checkpoint control.

Diplomityössä on tarkasteltu sellutehtaan laimeiden ja väkevien hajukaasujen käsittely-järjestelmän toimivuutta ja riittävyyttä muuttuvassa tuotantotilanteessa. Käyttöhenkilökunnan nimeämiin järjestelmän ongelmiin on esitetty parannusehdotuksia. Työssä arvioidaan kyseiselle sellutehtaalle paras käyttökelpoinen tekniikka hajukaasujen polttotavaksi. Työssä on tutustuttu nykyaikaisiin erilaisiin hajukaasujen käsittelytapoihin ja esitetty niiden heikkouksia ja vahvuuksia. Työssä on tuotu esille hajukaasujen keräilyyn liittyviä turvallisuusnäkökohtia. Diplomityössä arvioitiin koivu- ja havusellua valmistavan sellutehtaan hajukaasujen käsittelyjärjestelmän toimivuutta haastattelemalla käyttöhenkilökuntaa ja seuraamalla järjestelmän poikkeusilmoituksia. Työssä on annettu muutosehdotuksia, jotta keräily saadaan aikaisempaa turvallisemmaksi ja helpommin hallittavaksi. Riittävyyttä on arvioitu vertaamalla hajukaasujen käsittelyjärjestelmän mitoitusarvoja toteutuneisiin arvoihin ja tuotannon nousun vaikutusta syntyvien hajukaasujen määriin on arvioitu karkeasti laitetoimittajan ohjeiden mukaan. Pääosin hajukaasujen keräily onnistuu hyvin ja on riittävä keräämään syntyvät hajukaasut. Tilanne on harkittava uudelleen, mikäli prosesseissa tehdään merkittäviä muutoksia, jotka vaikuttavat syntyvien hajukaasujen määriin tai niiden rikkipitoisuuteen.

Successful experiments in nonlinear vibrations have been carried out with cantilever beams under harmonic base excitation. A flexible slender cantilever has been chosen as a convenient structure to exhibit modal interactions, subharmonic, superharmonic and chaotic motions, and others interesting nonlinear phenomena. The tools employed to analyze the dynamics of the beam generally include frequency- and force-response curves. To produce force-response curves, one keeps the excitation frequency constant and slowly varies the excitation amplitude, on the other hand, to produce frequency-response curves, one keeps the excitation amplitude fixed and slowly varies the excitation frequency. However, keeping the excitation amplitude constant while varying the excitation frequency is a difficult task with an open-loop measurement system. In this paper, it is proposed a closed-loop monitor vibration system available with the electromagnetic shaker in order to keep the harmonic base excitation amplitude constant. This experimental setup constitutes a significant improvement to produce frequency-response curves and the advantages of this setup are evaluated in a case study. The beam is excited with a periodic base motion transverse to the axis of the beam near the third natural frequency. Modal interactions and two-period quasi-periodic motion are observed involving the first and the third modes. Frequency-response curves, phase space and Poincaré map are used to characterize the dynamics of the beam.

This paper presents a novel time domain approach for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems based on Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) principle and Principal Component Coefficients (PCC), also known as loadings. Differently of typical applications of EMI applied to SHM, which are based on computing the Frequency Response Function (FRF), in this work the procedure is based on the EMI principle but all analysis is conducted directly in time-domain. For this, the PCC are computed from the time response of PZT (Lead Zirconate Titanate) transducers bonded to the monitored structure, which act as actuator and sensor at the same time. The procedure is carried out exciting the PZT transducers using a wide band chirp signal and getting their time responses. The PCC are obtained in both healthy and damaged conditions and used to compute statistics indexes. Tests were carried out on an aircraft aluminum plate and the results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method making it an excellent approach for SHM applications. Finally, the results using EMI signals in both frequency and time responses are obtained and compared. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics 2014.
