Nonideal systems are those in which one takes account of the influence of the oscillatory system on the energy supply with a limited power (Kononenko, 1969). In this paper, a particular nonideal system is investigated, consisting of a pendulum whose support point is vibrated along a horizontal guide by a two bar linkage driven by a DC motor, considered to be a limited power supply. Under these conditions, the oscillations of the pendulum are analyzed through the variation of a control parameter. The voltage supply of the motor is considered to be a reliable control parameter. Each simulation starts from zero speed and reaches a steady-state condition when the motor oscillates around a medium speed. Near the fundamental resonance region, the system presents some interesting nonlinear phenomena, including multi-periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic motion. The loss of stability of the system occurs through a saddle-node bifurcation, where there is a collision of a stable orbit with an unstable one, which is approximately located close to the value of the pendulum's angular displacement given by alpha (C)= pi /2. The aims of this study are to better understand nonideal systems using numerical simulation, to identify the bifurcations that occur in the system, and to report the existence of a chaotic attractor near the fundamental resonance. In this work a particular system is investigated consisting of a pendalum whose point of support is vibrated along a horizontal guide by a two bar linkage driven from a DC motor, considered as a limited power source. This system is nonideal since the oscillatory motion of the pendulum influences the speed of the motor and vice-versa, reflecting in a more complicated dynamical process. This work comprises the investigation of the phenomena that appear when the frequency of the pendulum draws near a secondary resonance region, due to the existing nonlinear interactions in the system. Also in this domain due to the power limitation of the motor, the frequency of the pendulum can be captured at resonance modifying completely the final response of the system. This behavior is known as Sommerfield effect and it will be studied here for a nonlinear system.

An Approach with Vertical Guidance (APV) is an instrument approach procedure which provides horizontal and vertical guidance to a pilot on approach to landing in reduced visibility conditions. APV approaches can greatly reduce the safety risk to general aviation by improving the pilot’s situational awareness. In particular the incidence of Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) which has occurred in a number of fatal air crashes in general aviation over the past decade in Australia, can be reduced. APV approaches can also improve general aviation operations. If implemented at Australian airports, APV approach procedures are expected to bring a cost saving of millions of dollars to the economy due to fewer missed approaches, diversions and an increased safety benefit. The provision of accurate horizontal and vertical guidance is achievable using the Global Positioning System (GPS). Because aviation is a safety of life application, an aviation-certified GPS receiver must have integrity monitoring or augmentation to ensure that its navigation solution can be trusted. However, the difficulty with the current GPS satellite constellation alone meeting APV integrity requirements, the susceptibility of GPS to jamming or interference and the potential shortcomings of proposed augmentation solutions for Australia such as the Ground-based Regional Augmentation System (GRAS) justifies the investigation of Aircraft Based Augmentation Systems (ABAS) as an alternative integrity solution for general aviation. ABAS augments GPS with other sensors at the aircraft to help it meet the integrity requirements. Typical ABAS designs assume high quality inertial sensors to provide an accurate reference trajectory for Kalman filters. Unfortunately high-quality inertial sensors are too expensive for general aviation. In contrast to these approaches the purpose of this research is to investigate fusing GPS with lower-cost Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and a mathematical model of aircraft dynamics, referred to as an Aircraft Dynamic Model (ADM) in this thesis. Using a model of aircraft dynamics in navigation systems has been studied before in the available literature and shown to be useful particularly for aiding inertial coasting or attitude determination. In contrast to these applications, this thesis investigates its use in ABAS. This thesis presents an ABAS architecture concept which makes use of a MEMS IMU and ADM, named the General Aviation GPS Integrity System (GAGIS) for convenience. GAGIS includes a GPS, MEMS IMU, ADM, a bank of Extended Kalman Filters (EKF) and uses the Normalized Solution Separation (NSS) method for fault detection. The GPS, IMU and ADM information is fused together in a tightly-coupled configuration, with frequent GPS updates applied to correct the IMU and ADM. The use of both IMU and ADM allows for a number of different possible configurations. Three are investigated in this thesis; a GPS-IMU EKF, a GPS-ADM EKF and a GPS-IMU-ADM EKF. The integrity monitoring performance of the GPS-IMU EKF, GPS-ADM EKF and GPS-IMU-ADM EKF architectures are compared against each other and against a stand-alone GPS architecture in a series of computer simulation tests of an APV approach. Typical GPS, IMU, ADM and environmental errors are simulated. The simulation results show the GPS integrity monitoring performance achievable by augmenting GPS with an ADM and low-cost IMU for a general aviation aircraft on an APV approach. A contribution to research is made in determining whether a low-cost IMU or ADM can provide improved integrity monitoring performance over stand-alone GPS. It is found that a reduction of approximately 50% in protection levels is possible using the GPS-IMU EKF or GPS-ADM EKF as well as faster detection of a slowly growing ramp fault on a GPS pseudorange measurement. A second contribution is made in determining how augmenting GPS with an ADM compares to using a low-cost IMU. By comparing the results for the GPS-ADM EKF against the GPS-IMU EKF it is found that protection levels for the GPS-ADM EKF were only approximately 2% higher. This indicates that the GPS-ADM EKF may potentially replace the GPS-IMU EKF for integrity monitoring should the IMU ever fail. In this way the ADM may contribute to the navigation system robustness and redundancy. To investigate this further, a third contribution is made in determining whether or not the ADM can function as an IMU replacement to improve navigation system redundancy by investigating the case of three IMU accelerometers failing. It is found that the failed IMU measurements may be supplemented by the ADM and adequate integrity monitoring performance achieved. Besides treating the IMU and ADM separately as in the GPS-IMU EKF and GPS-ADM EKF, a fourth contribution is made in investigating the possibility of fusing the IMU and ADM information together to achieve greater performance than either alone. This is investigated using the GPS-IMU-ADM EKF. It is found that the GPS-IMU-ADM EKF can achieve protection levels approximately 3% lower in the horizontal and 6% lower in the vertical than a GPS-IMU EKF. However this small improvement may not justify the complexity of fusing the IMU with an ADM in practical systems. Affordable ABAS in general aviation may enhance existing GPS-only fault detection solutions or help overcome any outages in augmentation systems such as the Ground-based Regional Augmentation System (GRAS). Countries such as Australia which currently do not have an augmentation solution for general aviation could especially benefit from the economic savings and safety benefits of satellite navigation-based APV approaches.

This work reports on thermal characterization of SOI (silicon on insulator) CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) MEMS (micro electro mechanical system) gas sensors using a thermoreflectance (TR) thermography system. The sensors were fabricated in a CMOS foundry and the micro hot-plate structures were created by back-etching the CMOS processed wafers in a MEMS foundry using DRIE (deep reactive ion etch) process. The calibration and experimental details of the thermoreflectance based thermal imaging setup, used for these micro hot-plate gas sensor structures, are presented. Experimentally determined temperature of a micro hot-plate sensor, using TR thermography and built-in silicon resistive temperature sensor, is compared with that estimated using numerical simulations. The results confirm that TR based thermal imaging technique can be used to determine surface temperature of CMOS MEMS devices with a high accuracy. © 2010 EDA Publishing/THERMINIC.

Micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology offers sensors with lower cost, smaller size, lower power consumption. In this paper, a kind of low cost motion-sensing system based MEMS sensors is developed. The objective of the design is low cost, small volume and light weight in order to be used in many fields. The constituting principle of the system is described. Algorithms and hardware of the system are researched. And the definition of coordinate, calculation of pose angle, transform of acceleration and calculation of the velocities and displacement of the moving object are presented with corresponding mathematics model and algorithms. The experiments are carried out in principle and results are given. It is proved that the low cost motion-sensing system is effective and correct.

Even though dynamic programming offers an optimal control solution in a state feedback form, the method is overwhelmed by computational and storage requirements. Approximate dynamic programming implemented with an Adaptive Critic (AC) neural network structure has evolved as a powerful alternative technique that obviates the need for excessive computations and storage requirements in solving optimal control problems. In this paper, an improvement to the AC architecture, called the �Single Network Adaptive Critic (SNAC)� is presented. This approach is applicable to a wide class of nonlinear systems where the optimal control (stationary) equation can be explicitly expressed in terms of the state and costate variables. The selection of this terminology is guided by the fact that it eliminates the use of one neural network (namely the action network) that is part of a typical dual network AC setup. As a consequence, the SNAC architecture offers three potential advantages: a simpler architecture, lesser computational load and elimination of the approximation error associated with the eliminated network. In order to demonstrate these benefits and the control synthesis technique using SNAC, two problems have been solved with the AC and SNAC approaches and their computational performances are compared. One of these problems is a real-life Micro-Electro-Mechanical-system (MEMS) problem, which demonstrates that the SNAC technique is applicable to complex engineering systems.

Diaphragm thickness and the corresponding piezoresistor locations change due to over or under etching in bulk micromachined piezoresistive pressure sensor which intern influences the device performance. In the present work, variation of sensitivity and nonlinearity of a micro electro mechanical system low pressure sensor is investigated. The sensor is modeled using finite element method to analyze the variation of sensitivity and nonlinearity with diaphragm thickness. To verify the simulated results, the sensors with different diaphragm thicknesses are fabricated. The models are verified by comparing the calculated results with experimental data. This study is potentially useful for the researchers as most of the times the diaphragm is either over-etched or under-etched due to inherent variation in wafer thickness and involving manual operations.

For Micro-electro-mechanical System (MEMS) applications, TiNi-based thin film Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) possess many desirable properties, such as high power density, large transformation stress and strain upon heating and cooling, superelasticity and biocompatibility. In this paper, recent development in TiNi-based thin film SMA and microactuator applications is discussed. The topics related to film deposition and characterisation is mainly focused on crystal nucleation and growth during annealing, film thickness effect, film texture, stress induced surface relief, wrinkling and trenches as well as Temperature Memory Effect (TME). The microactuator applications are mainly focused on microvalve and microcage for biological applications, micromirror for optical applications and data storage using nanoindentation method. Five-micron thick freestanding Si cantilevers were fabricated on bulk Si (1 1 1) substrates with surface/bulk micromachining (SBM) process. Then 1-mu m thick GaN layers were deposited on the Si cantilevers by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Epilayers on cantilever areas were obtained crack-free, and the photoluminescence (PL) spectra verified the stress reduction and better material quality in these suspended parts of GaN. Back sides of the cantilevers were also covered with GaN layers, which prevented the composite beams from bending dramatically. This paper had proved the feasibility of integrating high-quality GaN epilayers with Si micromechanical structures to realize GaN-based micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS). (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. 10 mu m-thick ultra-thin Si (111) membranes for GaN epi-layers growth were successfully fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate by backside etching the handle Si and buried oxide (BOX) layer. Then 1 mu m-thick GaN layers were deposited on these Si membranes by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The crack-free areas of 250 mu m, x 250 mu m were obtained on the GaN layers due to the reduction of thermal stress by using these ultra-thin Si membranes, which was further confirmed by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the simulation results from the finite element method calculation by using the software of ANSYS. In this paper, a newly developed approach was demonstrated to utilize micromechanical structures for GaN growth, which would improve the material quality of the epi-layers and facilitate GaN-based micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) fabrication, especially the pressure sensor, in the future applications. Optische Spektrometer sind bekannte Instrumente für viele Anwendungen in Life Sciences, Produktion und Technik aufgrund ihrer guten Selektivität und Sensitivität zusammen mit ihren berührungslosen Messverfahren. MEMS (engl. Micro-electro-mechanical system)-basierten Spektrometer werden als disruptive Technologie betrachtet, in der miniaturisierte Fabry-Pérot Filter als sehr attraktiv für die optische Kommunikation und 'Smart Personal Environments', einschließlich des medizinischen Anwendungen, zu nennen sind. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist, durchstimmbare Filter-Arrays mit kostengünstigen Technologien herzustellen. Materialien und technologische Prozesse, die für die Herstellung der Filter-Arrays benötigt werden, wurden untersucht. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit, wurden durchstimmbare Fabry Pérot Filter-Arrays für den sichtbaren Spektralbereich untersucht, die als Nano-Spektrometer eingesetzt werden. Darüber hinaus wurde ein Modell der numerischen Simulation vorgestellt, die zur Ermittlung eines optimales geometrisches Designs verwendet wurde, wobei sich das Hauptaugenmerk der Untersuchung auf die Durchbiegung der Filtermembranen aufgrund der mechanischen Verspannung der Schichten richtet. Die geometrische Form und Größe der Filtermembranen zusammen mit der Verbindungsbrücken sind von entscheidender Bedeutung, da sie die Durchbiegung beeinflussen. Lange und schmale Verbindungsbrücken führen zur stärkeren Durchbiegung der Filtermembranen. Dieser Effekt wurde auch bei der Vergrößerung der Durchmesser der Membran beobachtet. Die Filter mit spiralige (engl. curl-bent) Verbindungsbrücken führten zu geringerer Deformation als die mit geraden oder gebogenen Verbindungsbrücken. Durchstimmbare Si3N4/SiO2 DBR-basierende Filter-Arrays wurden erfolgreich hergestellt. Eine Untersuchung über die UV-NIL Polymere, die als Opferschicht und Haltepfosten-Material der Filter verwendet wurden, wurde durchgeführt. Die Polymere sind kompatibel zu dem PECVD-Verfahren, das für die Spiegel-Herstellung verwendet wird. Die laterale Strukturierung der DBR-Spiegel mittels des RIE (engl. Reactive Ion Etching)-Prozesses sowie der Unterätz-Prozess im Sauerstoffplasma zur Entfernung der Opferschicht und zum Erreichen der Luftspalt-Kavität, wurden durchgeführt. Durchstimmbare Filter-Arrays zeigten einen Abstimmbereich von 70 nm bei angelegten Spannungen von weniger als 20 V. Optimierungen bei der Strukturierung von TiO2/SiO2 DBR-basierenden Filtern konnte erzielt werden. Mit der CCP (engl. Capacitively Coupling Plasma)-RIE, wurde eine Ätzrate von 20 nm/min erreicht, wobei Fotolack als Ätzmaske diente. Mit der ICP (engl. Inductively Coupling Plasma)-RIE, wurden die Ätzrate von mehr als 60 nm/min mit einem Verhältniss der Ar/SF6 Gasflüssen von 10/10 sccm und Fotolack als Ätzmasken erzielt. Eine Ätzrate von 80 bis 90 nm/min wurde erreicht, hier diente ITO als Ätzmaske. Ausgezeichnete geätzte Profile wurden durch den Ätzprozess unter Verwendung von 500 W ICP/300 W RF-Leistung und Ar/SF6 Gasflüsse von 20/10 sccm erreicht. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit ermöglichen die Realisierung eines breiten Spektralbereichs der Filter-Arrays im Nano-Spektrometer.

This paper presents novel vehicle detection and classification method by measuring and processing magnetic signal based on single micro-electro- mechanical system (MEMS) magnetic sensor. When a vehicle moves over the ground, it generates a succession of impacts on the earth's magnetic field, which can be detected by single magnetic sensor. The magnetic signal measured by the magnetic sensor is related to the moving direction and the type of the vehicle. Generally, the recognition rate using single sensor detector is not high. In order to improve the recognition rate, a novel feature extraction algorithm and a novel vehicle classification and recognition algorithm are presented. The concavity and convexity areas, and the angles of concave and convex parts of the waveform are extracted. An improved support vector machine (ISVM) classifier is developed to perform vehicle classification and recognition. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by outdoor experiments.

Though 3D computer graphics has seen tremendous advancement in the past two decades, most available mechanisms for computer interaction in 3D are high cost and targeted for industry and virtual reality applications. Recent advances in Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS) devices have brought forth a variety of new low-cost, low-power, miniature sensors with high accuracy, which are well suited for hand-held devices. In this work a novel design for a 3D computer game controller using inertial sensors is proposed, and a prototype device based on this design is implemented. The design incorporates MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes from Analog Devices to measure the three components of the acceleration and angular velocity. From these sensor readings, the position and orientation of the hand-held compartment can be calculated using numerical methods. The implemented prototype is utilizes a USB 2.0 compliant interface for power and communication with the host system. A Microchip dsPIC microcontroller is used in the design. This microcontroller integrates the analog to digital converters, the program memory flash, as well as the core processor, on a single integrated circuit. A PC running Microsoft Windows operating system is used as the host machine. Prototype firmware for the microcontroller is developed and tested to establish the communication between the design and the host, and perform the data acquisition and initial filtering of the sensor data. A PC front-end application with a graphical interface is developed to communicate with the device, and allow real-time visualization of the acquired data.
