A series of eight new polyquinolines and polyanthrazolines with pyrrole isomeric units in main chain were synthesized and characterized. The new polymers showed high glass transition temperatures (T-g = 242-339 degreesC) and excellent thermal stability (T-5% = 398-536 degreesC in air, TGA). Compared to the series of polyanthrazolines, the series of polyquinolines exhibited higher thermal stability, better solubility in common organic solvents, and lower maximum absorption wavelengths (lambda(max)(a)). Polyanthrazolines with 2,5-pyrrole linkage showed an unusually high lambda(max)(a) (565 nm) and small band gap (2.02 eV). All polymers in solution had low photoluminescence quantum yields between 10(-2%) and 10(-5%) and excited-state lifetimes of 0.28-1.29 ns. The effects of molecular structure, especially pyrrole linkage structures, on the electronic structure, thermodynamics, and some of the optical properties of the polymers were explored. A model of hydrogen bonds in the main chain of the polymers was suggested to explain the difference in the properties of the isomer polymers. In addition, a polyquinoline (PBM) was chosen to examine the proton conductivity; the result indicated that the PBM/H3PO4 complex exhibited a high conductivity of 1.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 157 degreesC.

New single-polymer electroluminescent systems containing two individual emission species - polyfluorenes as a blue host and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole derivative units as an orange dopant on the main chain - have been designed and synthesized. The resulting single polymers are found to have highly efficient white electroluminescence with simultaneous blue(lambda(max) = 421 nm/445 nm) and orange emission (lambda(max) = 564 nm)from the corresponding emitting species. The influence of the photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies of both the blue and orange species on the electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies of white polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) based on the single-polymer systems has been investigated. The introduction of the highly efficient 4,7-bis(4-(N-phenyl-N-(4-methylphenyl)amino)phenyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole unit to the main chain of polyfluorene provides significant improvement in EL efficiency. For a single-layer device fabricated in air (indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonic acid/polymer/Ca/Al), pure-white electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.35,0.32), maximum brightness of 12 300 cd m(-2), luminance efficiency of 7.30 cd A(-1), and power efficiency of 3.34 lm W-1 can be obtained.

A series of blue light-emitting poly(aryl ether)s (PAEs) containing ter- or pentafluorenes in the main chain have been synthesized via nucleophilic substitution polycondensation reaction. The energy levels of the polymers were tuned by introducing hole-transporting triaryamine groups in the side chains and/or incorporating electron-transporting oxadiazole segments in the main chain. The optical properties of the polymers are dominantly determined by the well-defined oligofluorene segments, and therefore all polymers show high photoluminescence quantum yield. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) characterizations indicate that they are vitrified polymers with high glass transition temperature (up to 156 degrees C). The polymers comprising pentafluorenes exhibit electroluminescent properties equal to or better than fully conjugated fluorene homopolymers. With the device structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al, an external quantum efficiency of 1.4% along with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.17, 0.09) has

A main-chain nonracemic chiral liquid crystalline polymer was synthesized from (R)-(-)4'-{w-[2-(p-hydroxy-o-nitrophenyloxy)-1-propyloxy]-1-decyloxyl-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid. This polymer contained 10 methylene units in each chemical repeating unit and was abbreviated PET(R*-10). On the basis of differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy experiments, chiral smectic C (S-C*) and chiral smectic A (S-A*) phases were identified. Both flat-elongated and helical lamellar crystal morphologies were observed in transmission electron microscopy. Of particular interest was the flat-elongated lamellar crystals were constructed via microtwinning of an orthorhombic cell with dimensions of a = 1.42 nm, b = 1.28 nm, and c = 3.04 nm. On the other hand, the helical lamellar crystals were exclusively left-handed, which was opposite to the right-handed helical crystals grown in PET(R*-9) and PET(R*-11) (having 9 and 11 methylene units, respectively). Note that these three polymers had identical right-handed chiral centers (R*-). Therefore, a single methylene unit difference on the polymer backbones on an atomic length scale substantially changed the chirality of the crystals in the micrometer length scale. Furthermore, aggregates of these helical crystals in PET(R*-10) did not generate banded spherulites in polarized light microscopy. Possible reasons for this change and loss of helical senses (handedness) on different length scales in chirality transferring processes were discussed.

Full Paper: Two new 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl-based dianhydrides, i.e., 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride (BNDADA) and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzoyloxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride (BNDEDA), were synthesized and polymerized with various aromatic diamines to afford polyimides through the traditional two-step method. The polyimides with inherent viscosities ranging from 0.27 to 0.70 dl . g(-1) showed excellent solubilities in polar solvents such as DMAc, DMSO and NMP etc., except of the poly(ester imide) prepared from BNDEDA and benzidine. Poly(ester imide)s based on BNDEDA can also be readily dissolved in weakly polar solvents such as THF, CH2Cl2 and CHCl3. The glass transition temperatures of these polyimides are in the range of 210-310 degrees C; the 5% weight loss temperatures are in the range of 390-465 degrees C in nitrogen and 384-447 degrees c in air. These polymers from light yellow, tough films that were transparent above 365 nm. The effects of different flexible units attached in the 2- and 2'-positions, i.e., amide, ester and ether, on the properties of the polyimides obtained are discussed.

The shear-induced spiral-like morphology of a main-chain thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) is observed and characterized by means of polarizing light microscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction techniques. The spiral-like texture is formed during shearing in the temperature range of liquid crystalline to isotropic transition (335-340 degreesC), and dispersed discontinuously in the mosaic matrix. Electron diffraction results indicate that the spiral exhibits orthorhombic lateral packing of the crystals and homeotropic alignment of the molecules. The spiral formation process and possible affecting factors are discussed.

A series of main-chain Liquid-crystalline ionomers containing sulfonate groups pendant on the polymer backbone were synthesized by an interfacial condensation reaction of 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha,alpha'-dimethyl benzalazine, a mesogenic monomer, with brilliant yellow (BY), a sulfonate-containing monomer, and a 1/9 mixture of terephthaloyl and sebacoyl dichloride. The structures of the polymers were characterized by LR and UV spectroscopies. DSC and thermogravimetric analysis were used to measure the thermal properties of those polymers, and the mesogenic properties were characterized by a polarized optical microscope, DSC, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The ionomers were thermally stable to about 310 degreesC. They were thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) with high mesomorphic-phase transition temperatures and exhibited broad nematic mesogenic regions of 160-170 degreesC, and they were lyotropic LCPs with willowy leaf-shaped textures in sulfuric acid. However, the thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties were somewhat weakened because the concentration of BY was more than 8%. The inherent viscosity in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone suggested that intramolecular associations of sulfonate groups occurred at low concentration, and intermolecular associations predominated at higher concentration. Phase structures and transformation mechanisms of nonracemic chiral biological and synthetic polymers are fundamentally important topics in understanding their macroscopic responses in different environments. It has been known for many years that helical structures and morphologies can exist in low-ordered chiral liquid crystalline (LC) phases. However, when the chiral liquid crystals form highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases, the helical morphology is suppressed due to the crystallization process. A double-twisted morphology has been observed in many liquid crystalline biopolymers such as dinoflaggellate chromosomes (in Prorocentrum micans) in an in vivo arrangement. Helical crystals grown from solution have been reported in the case of Bombyx mori silk fibroin crystals having the beta modification. This study describes a synthetic nonracemic chiral main-chain LC polyester that is able to thermotropically form helical single lamellar crystals. Flat single lamellar crystals can also be observed under the same crystallization condition. Moreover, flat and helical lamellae can coexist in one single lamellar crystal, within which one form can smoothly transform to the other. Both of these crystals possess the same structure, although translational symmetry is broken in the helical crystals. The polymer chain folding direction in both flat and helical lamellar crystals is determined to be identical, and it is always along the long axis of the lamellae. This finding provides an opportunity to study the chirality effect on phase structure, morphology, and transformation in condensed states of chiral materials. [S0163-1829(99)01042-5].

In order to develop photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) imaged in alkaline aqueous solution, a photosensitive diamine and relevant polymer containing conjugated double bonds in the main chain have been synthesized. The photosensitive characteristics and thermal stability of the polymers were investigated. These polymers possess good thermal stability and sensitivity to UV irradiation, and could be used to form a PSPI resist using alkaline aqueous solution as developer.

The high electronegativity and small size of the fluorine atom and the high stability of C-F bonds impart interesting properties and applications to fluorine containing polymers. The unique properties of fluoropolymers include high thermal stability, improved chemical resistance, low surface energies, low coefficients of friction, and low dielectric constants. Applications of fluorinated polymers include use as noncorrosive materials, polymer processing aids, chemically resistant and antifouling coatings, as well as interlayer dielectrics. Fluorine-containing polymers can be directly synthesized via polymerization of fluorine-containing monomers or by post-polymerization modification. The latter method can be used to attach fluorinated species, such as perfluoroalkyl groups, onto conventional polymer chains, thereby imparting properties of fluorine-containing polymers into conventional polymers and widening their range of potential applications.

The opto(electrical) properties and theoretical calculations of polyazomethine with vinylene and phenantridine moieties in the main chain were investigated in the present study. 2,5-Bis(hexyloxy)-1,4-bis[(2,5-bis(hexyloxy)-4-formyl-phenylenevinylene]benzene was polymerized in solution with 3,8-diamino-6-phenylphenanthridine (PAZ-PV-Ph). The temperatures of 5% weight loss (T-5%) of the polyazomethine was observed at 356 degrees C in nitrogen. Electrochemical properties of thin film of the polymer were studied by differential pulse voltammetry. The HOMO level of the PAZ-PV-Ph was at -4.97 eV. The energy band gap (E-g) was detected of approximately similar to 1.9 eV. Energy band gap (E-gopt) was additionally calculated from absorption spectrum and absorption coefficient alpha. The absorption UV-vis spectra of polyazomethine recorded in solution showed a blue shift in comparison with the solid state. HOMO-LUMO levels and E-g were additionally calculated theoretically by density functional theory and molecular simulations of PAZ-PV-Ph are presented. Current density-voltage (J-U) measurements were performed on ITO/PAZ-PV-Ph/Al, ITO/TiO2/PAZ-PV-Ph/Al and ITO/PEDOT/PAZ-PV-Ph:TiO2/Al devices in the dark and during irradiation with light (under illumination of 1000 W m(-2)). The polymer was tested using AFM technique and roughness (R-a, R-ms) along with skew and kurtosis are presented.

Liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) are complex systems that include features of both orientationally ordered mesophases and amorphous polymers. Frequently, the isotropic amorphous state cannot be studied due to the rapid mesophase formation. Here, a new main chain LCP, poly(triethyleneglycol methyl p,p'-bibenzoate), PTEMeB, has been synthesized. It shows a rather slow mesophase formation making possible to study independently both the amorphous and the liquid crystalline states. The structure and phase transitions of PTEMeB have been investigated by calorimetry, variable-temperature MAXS/WAXS employing synchrotron radiation, and X-ray diffraction in oriented fibers. These experiments have pointed out the presence of two glass transitions, related to the amorphous or to the liquid crystal phases. Additionally, the mesophase seems to be a coexistence of orthogonal and tilted smectic phases. A dielectric relaxation study of PTEMeB over broad ranges of temperature and pressure has been performed. The dynamic glass transition turns out to be slower for the amorphous state than for the liquid crystal. Monitoring of the α relaxation has allowed us to follow the isothermal mesophase formation at atmospheric pressure. Additionally, the dynamical behavior at high pressures has pointed out the fast formation of the mesophase induced by sudden pressure changes.

A novel (main chain)-(side chain) vinyl polyperoxide, poly(alpha-(tert-butylperoxymethyl)styrene peroxide) (MCSCPP), an alternating copolymer of alpha-(tert-butylperoxymethyl)styrene (TPMS) and oxygen, has been synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of TPMS. The MCSCPP was characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, IR, DSC, EI-MS, and GC-MS studies. The overall activation energy (E(a)) for the degradation of MCSCPP was found to be 27 kcal/mol. Formaldehyde and alpha-(tert-butylperoxy)acetophenone (TPAP) were identified as the primary degradation products of MCSCPP; TPAP was found to undergo further degradation. The side chain peroxy groups were found to be thermally more stable than those in the main chain. Polymerization of styrene in the presence of MCSCPP as initiator, at 80 degrees C, follows classical kinetics. The presence of peroxy segments in the polystyrene chain was confirmed by both H-1 NMR and thermal decomposition studies. Interestingly, unlike other vinyl polyperoxides, the MCSCPP initiator shows an increase in molecular weight with conversion.

A novel (main-chain)-(side-chain) vinyl polyperoxide, poly(dipentene peroxide)(PDP), an alternating copolymer of dipentene (DP) and oxygen, has been synthesized by thermal oxidative polymerization of DP. The PDP was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and EI-MS studies. The overall activation energies of the degradation from Kissinger’s method were 28 and 33 kcal/mol, respectively, for the endocyclic and acyclic peroxide units. The side-chain peroxy groups were found to be thermally more stable than the main chain. Above 45°C the rate of polymerization increases sharply at a particular instant showing an “autoacceleration” with the formation of knee point. The kinetics of autoacceleration has been studied at various temperatures (45–70°C) and pressures (50–250 psi). © 2000 John Wiley&Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 79: 1549–1555, 2001
