We present the fabrication and high frequency characterization of a capacitive nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) switch using a dense array of horizontally aligned single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The nanotubes are directly grown onto metal layers with prepatterned catalysts with horizontal alignment in the gas flow direction. Subsequent wetting-induced compaction by isopropanol increases the nanotube density by one order of magnitude. The actuation voltage of 6 V is low for a NEMS device, and corresponds to CNT arrays with an equivalent Young's modulus of 4.5-8.5 GPa, and resistivity of under 0.0077 Ω·cm. The high frequency characterization shows an isolation of -10 dB at 5 GHz. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

The behavior of micro-scale flow is significant for the performance of Micro-Electro-Mechanical- Systems (MEMS) devices. Some experiments about liquid flow through microtubes with diameters about 3similar to20mum are presented here. The liquids used in our experiments include some simple liquids with small molecules, such as non-ion water and several kinds of organic liquids (CCL4, C6H5C2H5 and Isopropanol etc.). The flow rate and the normalized friction cocfficients were measured in micro-flow experimental apparatus. The results show that when the driven pressure varies from 0 to 1Mpa, the flow behaviors in 20mum microtube for both polar and non-polar liquids are in agreement with Hagen-Poiseuille law of the classical theory. It means that N-S equation based on continuous medium still acts well in this case. For higher pressure drop from 1 to 30Mpa, in the microtubes with diameter of 3similar to10mum, the normalized friction coefficients of organic liquids can't keep constant with pressure increases. However the non-ion water reveals different trends.

A physical model is presented to describe the kinds of static forces responsible for adhesion of nano-scale copper metal particles to silicon surface with a fluid layer. To demonstrate the extent of particle cleaning, Received in revised form equilibrium separation distance (ESD) and net adhesion force (NAF) of a regulated metal particle with different radii (10-300 nm) on the silicon surface in CO2-based cleaning systems under different pressures were simulated. Generally, increasing the pressure of the cleaning system decreased the net adhesion force between spherical copper particle and silicon surface entrapped with medium. For CO2 + isopropanol cleaning system, the equilibrium separation distance exhibited a maximum at temperature 313.15 K in the Equilibrium separation distance regions of pressure space (1.84-8.02 MPa). When the dimension of copper particle was given, for example, High pressure 50 nm radius particles, the net adhesion force decreased and equilibrium separation distance increased with increased pressure in the CO2 + H2O cleaning system at temperature 348.15 K under 2.50-12.67 MPa pressure range. However, the net adhesion force and equilibrium separation distance both decreased with an increase in surfactant concentration at given pressure (27.6 or 27.5 MPa) and temperature (318 or 298 K) for CO2 + H2O with surfactant PFPE COO-NH4+ or DiF(8)-PO4-Na+.

Cloud chambers were essential devices in early nuclear and particle physics research. Superseded by more modern detectors in actual research, they still remain very interesting pedagogical apparatus. This thesis attempts to give a global view on this topic. To do so, a review of the physical foundations of the diffusion cloud chamber, in which an alcohol is supersaturated by cooling it with a thermal reservoir, is carried out. Its main results are then applied to analyse the working conditions inside the chamber. The analysis remarks the importance of using an appropriate alcohol, such as isopropanol, as well as a strong cooling system, which for isopropanol needs to reach −40ºC. That theoretical study is complemented with experimental tests that were performed with what is the usual design of a home-made cloud chamber. An effective setup is established, which highlights details such as a grazing illumination, a direct contact with the cooling reservoir through a wide metal plate, or the importance of avoiding vapour removal. Apart from that, video results of different phenomena that cloud chamber allow to observe are also presented. Overall, it is aimed to present a physical insight that pedagogical papers usually lack.

Magnetic nanoparticles are frequently coated with SiO2to improve their functionality and bio-compatibility in a range of biomedical and polymer nanocomposile applications. In this paper, a scalable flame aerosol technology is used to produce highly dispersible, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles hermetically coaled with silica to retain full magnetization performance. Iron oxide particles were produced by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) of iron acelylacetonale in xylene/acetonitrile solutions, and the resulting aerosol was in situ coaled with SiO2 by oxidation of swirling hexamethlydisiloxane vapor. The process allows independent control of the core Fe2O3, particle properties and the thickness of their silica coaling film. This ensures that the non-magnetic SiO2 layer can be closely controlled and minimized. The optimal SiO2 content for complete (hermetic) encapsulation of the magnetic core particles was determined by isopropanol chemisorption. The magnetization of Fe2O3 coated with about 2 nm thin SiO2 layers was nearly identical lo that of uncoated, pure Fe2O3 nanoparlicles.

Photoreflectance (PR) has been used to study surface electronic properties (electric field, Fermi level pinning, and density of surface states) of undoped-n(+) (UN+) GaAs treated in the solution of ammonium sulfide in isopropanol. Complex Fourier transformation (CFT) of PR spectra from passivated surface shows that the sulfur overlay on GaAs surface makes no contribution to Franz-Keldysh oscillations (FKOs). The barrier height measured by PR is derived from surface states directly, rather than the total barrier height, which includes the potentials derived from Ga-S and As-S dipole layers. Comparing with native oxidated surface, the passivation leads to 80 meV movement of surface Fermi level towards the conduction band minimum, and reduction by more than one order in density of surface states. A-type zeolite membranes were successfully synthesized on tubular alpha-Al2O3 supports by secondary growth method with vacuum seeding In the seeding process, a thin, uniform and continuous seeding layer was closely attached to the support surface by the pressure difference between the two sides of the support wall. The effects of seed particle size, suspension concentration, coating pressure difference and coating time on the membrane and its pervaporation properties were investigated. The as-synthesized membranes were characterized by XRD and SEM. The quality of the membranes was evaluated by the pervaporation dehydration of 95 wt. % isopropanol/water mixture at 343 K. High quality A-type zeolite membranes can be reproducibly prepared by the secondary growth method with vacuum seeding under the conditions: seed particle size of 500-1200 nm, suspension concentration of 4-8 g/l, coating pressure difference of 0.0100-0.0250 MPa and coating time of 45-180 s. The hydrodehalogenation of aromatic halides, catalyzed by Pd/C in aqueous solutions, yields arenes in short reaction times at room temperature under normal pressure. The nature of the solvents has an important influence on the reaction rates and the activity of the catalyst. The catalyst shows the highest activity in water. In the hydrodechlorination of 4-chlorohypnone, it was in water that C-Cl bond was easier to be hydrogenated, and in isopropanol that C=O was easier to be hydrogenated. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Soluble NdCl3 center dot 3EHOH (2-ethyl hexanol) in hexane combined with AlEt3 is highly active for isoprene polymerization in hexane. The NdCl3 center dot 3EHOH/AlEt3 has higher activity than the typical binary catalyst NdCl3 center dot 3(i)PrOH (isopropanol)/AlEt3 and ternary catalyst NdV3 (neodymium versatate)/AlEt2Cl/Al(i-Bu)(2)H. The molecular weight of polyisoprenes can be controlled by variation of [Nd], [Al]/[Nd] ratio and polymerization temperature and time. The NdCl3 center dot 3EHOH/AlEt3 catalyst polymerized isoprene to afford products featuring high cis-1,4 stereospecificity (ca. 96%), high molecular weight (ca. 10(5)) and relatively narr ow molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-n = 2.0-2.8) simultaneously. More importantly, some living polymerization characteristics were demonstrated: (a) absence of chain termination; (b) linear correlation between M-n and polymer yield; (c) increment of molecular weight in the 'seeding' polymerization. Though some deviation from the typical living polymerization such as molecular weight distribution is not narrow enough and the line of M-n and polymer yield does not extrapolate to zero, controlled polymerization with the current catalyst can still be concluded.

A simple method was developed for extracting DNA from brown algae Laminaria japonica, which possess large amounts of acidic polysaccharides. Firstly, the sporophyte were washed by eliminating polysaccaride buffer to remove the polysaccharides and then ground in liquid nitrogen. Secondly, the powders were treated with lysing buffer. Thirdly, KAc was used to eliminate the remaining acidic polysaccharides. The extracted DNA was purified using a chloroform-isoamyl alcohol ( 24: 1 v/v), and precipitated in cold isopropanol. The yield was from 18.7 to 37.5 mu g g(-1) (wet weight) and the purity of total DNA was determined spectrophotometrically as the ratio of A(260)/A(280), which was about 1.7 - 1.9. The extracted DNA was of high quality and suitable for molecular analyses, such as PCR, restriction enzyme digestion. This method is a reproducible, simple, and rapid technique for routine DNA extraction from sporophyte in Laminaria japonica. Furthermore, the low cost of this method makes it attractive for large-scale studies.

There is an urgent need for thorough analysis of Radix astragali, a widely used Chinese herb, for quality control purposes. This paper describes the development of a total analytical method for Radix astragali extract, a multi-component complex mixture. Twenty-four components were separated step by step from the extract using a series of isocratic isopropanol-methanol elutions, and then 42 components were separated similarly using methanol-water elutions. Based on the log k(w) and -S of the 66 components obtained from the above procedure and the optimization software developed in our laboratory, an optimum elution program consisting of seven methanol-water segments and four isopropanol-methanol segments was developed to finish the task of analyzing the total components in a single run. Under optimized gradient conditions, the sample of Radix astragali extract was analyzed. As expected, most of the components were well separated and the experimental chromatogram was in a good agreement with the predicted one.
