Electrochemical processes associated with changes in structure, connectivity or composition typically proceed via new phase nucleation with subsequent growth of nuclei. Understanding and controlling reactions requires the elucidation and control of nucleation mechanisms. However, factors controlling nucleation kinetics, including the interplay between local mechanical conditions, microstructure and local ionic profile remain inaccessible. Furthermore, the tendency of current probing techniques to interfere with the original microstructure prevents a systematic evaluation of the correlation between the microstructure and local electrochemical reactivity. In this work, the spatial variability of irreversible nucleation processes of Li on a Li-ion conductive glass-ceramics surface is studied with ~30 nm resolution. An increased nucleation rate at the boundaries between the crystalline AlPO4 phase and amorphous matrix is observed and attributed to Li segregation. This study opens a pathway for probing mechanisms at the level of single structural defects and elucidation of electrochemical activities in nanoscale volumes.

A scanning probe microscopy approach for mapping local irreversible electrochemical processes based on detection of bias-induced frequency shifts of cantilevers in contact with the electrochemically active surface is demonstrated. Using Li ion conductive glass ceramic as a model, we demonstrate near unity transference numbers for ionic transport and establish detection limits for current-based and strain-based detection. The tip-induced electrochemical process is shown to be a first-order transformation and nucleation potential is close to the Li metal reduction potential. Spatial variability of the nucleation bias is explored and linked to the local phase composition. These studies both provide insight into nanoscale ionic phenomena in practical Li-ion electrolyte and also open pathways for probing irreversible electrochemical, bias-induced, and thermal transformations in nanoscale systems.

Small firms are always vulnerable to complex technological change that may render their existing business model obsolete. This paper emphasises the need to understand how the Internet's ubiquitous World Wide Web is impacting on their operating environments. Consideration of evolutionary theory and the absorptive capacity construct provides the foundation for discussion of how learning and discovery take place within individuals, firms and the environments that interact with. Small firms, we argue, face difficulties identifying what routines and competencies are best aligned with the seemingly invisible dominant designs that support pursuit of new enterprise in web-impacted environments. We argue that such difficulties largely relate to an inability to acquire external knowledge and the subsequent reliance on existing internal selection processes that may reinforce the known, at the expense of the unknown. The paper concludes with consideration as to how managers can overcome the expected difficulties through the development of internal routines that support the continual search, evaluation and acquisition of specific external knowledge.

The electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique was used to study two chemically distinct Nb2O5 electrochromic thin films (one pure and the other lithium-doped) during the lithium electroinsertion reaction. In the initial cycles, the electrode showed an irreversible mass variation greater than expected for Li+ insertion/deinsertion processes, which was attributed to the wettability effect (allied to the porous morphology) that emerged as the dominant process in apparent electrode mass changes. As the cycles progressed, the mass variation stabilized and the changes in apparent mass became reversible, showing a good correlation with the charge variations. The results generally indicated that the Li+ insertion/deinsertion process occurred more easily in the Nb2O5-doped film, which also displayed a greater capacity for Li+ insertion. However, a total mass/charge balance analysis revealed that the stoichiometry of the Li+ solid state insertion/deinsertion reaction was similar in the two electrodes under study. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents an analysis of an irreversible Otto cycle aiming to optimize the net power through ECOP and ecological function. The studied cycle operates between two thermal reservoirs of infinite thermal capacity, with internal irreversibilities derived from non-isentropic behavior of compression and expansion processes, irreversibilities from thermal resistance in heat exchangers and heat leakage from the high temperature reservoir to the low temperature reservoir. Analytical expressions are applied for the power outputs optimized by the ECOP, by the ecological function and by the maximum power criteria, in conjunction with a graphic analysis, in which some cycle operation parameters are analyzed for an increased comprehension of the effects of the irreversibilities in the optimized power.

A mathematical model is developed for an irreversible Brayton cycle with regeneration, inter-cooling and reheating. The irreversibility are from the thermal resistance in the heat exchangers, the pressure drops in pipes, the non-isentropic behavior in the adiabatic expansions and compressions and the heat leakage to the cold source. The cycle is optimized by maximizing the ecological function, which is achieved by the search for optimal values for the temperatures of the cycle and for the pressure ratios of the first stage compression and the first stage expansion. The advantages of using the regenerator, intercooler and reheater are presented by comparison with cycles that do not incorporate one or more of these processes. Optimization results are compared with those obtained by maximizing the power output and it is concluded that the point of maximum ecological function has major advantages with respect to the entropy generation rate and the thermal efficiency, at the cost of a small loss in power.
