The results of several large multicenter CMR studies were reported in 2012, thus, constantly corroborating the evidence on CMR performance. In this review, we present results of the MR-IMPACT programme and the CE-MARC study, which demonstrated the superiority of perfusion-CMR over gated SPECT for the workup of suspected CAD, the currently available data from the European CMR registry, comprising almost 30,000 patients from 57 participating centers in 15 European countries, and finally, the results of the Advisa-MRI study, which documented the safety of a MRI-compatible pacemaker system. These large trials and others set the basis for the recommendations in the new European guidelines on heart failure to use CMR as a first line method if echocardiographic quality is inadequate or the etiology of heart failure is unclear.

The present study investigates the predictive value of the early appearance of simultaneous pointing-speech combinations. An experimental task was used to obtain a communicative productive sample from nineteen children at 1;0 and 1;3. Infant’s communicative productions, in combination with gaze joint engagement patterns, were analyzed in relation to different social conditions. The results show a significant effect of age and social condition on infants’ communicative productions. Gesture-speech combinations seem to work as a strong communicative resource to attract the adult’s attention in social demanding communicative contexts. Gaze joint engagement was used in combination with simultaneous pointing-speech combinations to attract adults’ attention during social demanding conditions. Finally, the use of simultaneous pointing-speech combinations at 1;0 in demanding conditions predicted greater expressive vocabulary acquisition at 1;3 and 1;6. These results indicate that the use of gesture-speech combinations may be considered a significant step towards the early integration of language components.

The central and peripheral nervous systems are involved in multiple age-dependent neurological deficits that are often attributed to alterations in function of myelinating glial cells. However, the molecular events that underlie the age-related decline of glial cell function are unknown. We used Schwann cells as a model to study biological processes affected in glial cells by aging. We comprehensively profiled gene expression of the Schwann cellrich mouse sciatic nerve throughout life, from day of birth until senescence (840 days of age). We combined the aging data with the microarray transcriptional data obtained using nerves isolated from Schwann cell-specific neuropathy-inducing mutants MPZCre/+/Lpin1fE2−3/fE2−3 , MPZCre/+/ScapfE1/fE1 and Pmp22-null mice. The majority of age related transcripts were also affected in the analyzed mouse models of neuropathy (54.4%) and in development (59.5%) indicating a high level of overlapping in implicated molecular pathways. We observed that compared to peripheral nerve development, dynamically changing expression profiles in aging have opposite (anticorrelated) orientation while they copy the orientation of transcriptional changes observed in analyzed neuropathy models. Subsequent clustering and biological annotation of dynamically changing transcripts revealed that the processes most significantly deregulated in aging include inflammatory/immune response and lipid biosynthesis/metabolism. Importantly, the changes in these pathways were also observed in myelinated oligodendrocyte-rich optic nerves of aged mice, albeit with lower magnitude. This observation suggests that similar biological processes are affected in aging glial cells in central and peripheral nervous systems, however with different dynamics. Our data, which provide the first comprehensive comparison of molecular changes in glial cells in three distinct biological conditions comprising development, aging and disease, provide not only a new inside into the molecular alterations underlying neural system aging but also identify target pathways for potential therapeutic approaches to prevent or delay complications associated with age-related and inherited forms of neuropathies. *Current address: Department of Physiology, UCSF, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Studies were conducted in annual crops of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) (cv. Elsanta to assess the relative importance of petals as an inoculum source of grey mould, caused by Botrytis cinerea and to identify during which period of flower and fruit development the presence of petals has a significant effect on development of grey mould on fruits. In 1998, the incidence of B. cinerea on flower parts was assessed, and the symptoms of grey mould on fruits were characterised with regards to their starting point. The incidence of B. cinerea on petals was 65-85% of those flowers that harboured B. cinerea. The starting point of symptoms was located underneath the sepals in 65-85% of fruits with grey mould, and petals were present at this site in about 50% of the cases. In 1999, four field experiments were conducted to assess the effect of petal removal at different stages of flower and fruit development on incidence of grey mould. The incidence of grey mould on fruits with petals retained till harvest was circa 55% more than on fruits where petals were removed or had dropped naturally by the end of flowering, regardless of planting date or inoculum level of B. cinerea. The incidence of grey mould was hardly different between treatments where petals were removed at young flower stage, old flower stage, or green fruit stage. It is concluded that petals are an effective and stable source of inoculum for fruit infection by B. cinerea. Considering the high probability that retention of petals during fruit expansion and ripening results in fruit infection, the elimination of petals as an inoculum source appears worthwhile even when the incidence of petal retention on fruits is relatively low.

Däremot växte pingstvännernas utvecklingssamarbete i Kenya under hela 1980-talet.

Cells communicate, or signal, with each other constantly to ensure proper functioning of tissues and organs. Cell signaling is often performed by interplay of receptors and ligands that bind these receptors. ErbB receptors (epidermal growth factor receptors, EGFR, HER) bind extracellular growth factors and transduce these signals inside of cells. ErbB dysfunction promotes carcinogenesis, and also results in numerous defects during normal development. This study focused on the functions of one member of the ErbB receptor family, ErbB4, and growth factor, neuregulin-1 (NRG-1), that can bind and activate ErbB4. This study aimed to find novel functions of ErbB4 and NRG-1. Hypoxia, or deficiency of oxygen, is common in cancer and ischemic conditions. One of the key findings of the work was the identification and characterization of a cross-talk between ErbB4 and Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α), the central mediator of hypoxia signaling. ErbB4 activation by NRG-1 was found to increase HIF-1α activity. Interestingly, this regulation occurred in reciprocal manner as HIF-1α was also able to increase protein levels of NRG-1 and ErbB4. Moreover, expression of NRG-1 and ErbB4 was associated with HIF activity in vivo in human clinical samples and in mice. Reduction of functional ErbB4 in developing zebrafish embryos resulted in defects in development of the skeletal muscles. To study ErbB4 functions in pathological situation in humans, clinical samples of serous ovarian carcinoma were analyzed using tissue microarrays and real-time RT-PCR. A specific isoform of ErbB4, CYT-1, was associated with poor survival in serous ovarian cancer and increased anchorage independent growth of ovarian cancer cells in vitro. These observations demonstrate that ErbB4 and NRG-1 are essential regulators of cellular response to hypoxia, of development, and of ovarian carcinogenesis.

Toisaalta aineisto on kerätty kyselytutkimuksen vastauksista.

The structure of the fruit and seed in development of Chorisia speciosa are described with the main purpose of clarifying the origin and nature of the hairs that cover the seeds and aiding future taxonomical and ecological studies of the group. The fruit is an ellipsoid loculicide capsule and presents the exocarp formed by 7-10 cells layers, with very thick walls and evident simple pits. A great number of mucilage secretory cavities and ramified vascular bundles, accompanied by fibers, occur in the parenchymatic mesocarp. The endocarp derives from the ventral epidermis of the ovary wall, whose cells undergo a gradual elongation, become lignified, and constitute the trichomes which cover the mature seeds. The fruit aperture occurs by means of a suture evident in the ovarian wall in the middle region of the carpel leaf. Anatropous and bitegmic ovules, provided by a hypostase, give rise to campilotropous and bitegmic seeds. The testa is uniseriate, the exotegmen is completely formed by macrosclereids, and mucilage secretory cavities occur in the mesotegmen. The endotegmen, which is differentiated in the endothelium, is crushed in the mature seed. The plicate embryo, which occupies practically the entire seminal cavity, is found between endosperm layers, both being rich in lipids.

Denis Goulet (1931-2006) was probably the main founder of work on ‘development ethics’ as a self-conscious field that treats the ethical and value questions posed by development theory, planning and practice. This overview of a selection of papers presented at a conference of the International Development Ethics Association (Uganda, 2006) surveys Goulet’s work and compares it with issues and approaches in the selected papers. Ideas raised by Goulet provide a framework for discussing the set of papers, which especially consider corruption, professional ethics and the rights to water and essential drugs. The papers in turn provide a basis for comparing Goulet’s ideas with actual directions of work on development ethics. Rather than as a separate sub-discipline, development ethics takes shape as an interdisciplinary meeting place, aided though by the profile and intellectual space that Goulet strikingly strove to build for it.

Abstract This seminar will introduce an initial year of research exploring participation in the development of a bilingual symbol dictionary. Symbols can be a communication and literacy ‘lifeline’ for those unable to communicate through speech or writing. We will discuss how an online system has been built to overcome language, cultural and literacy skill issues for a country where 86% are expatriates but the target clients are Arabic born individuals with speech and language impairments. The symbols in use at present are inappropriate and yet there is no democratic way of providing a ‘user voice’ for making choices, let alone easy mechanisms for adapting and sharing newly developed symbols across the nation or extended Arabic world. This project aims to change this situation. Having sourced a series of symbols that could be adapted to suit user’s needs, the team needed to encourage those users, their carers and therapists to vote on whether the symbols would be appropriate and work with those already in use. The first prototype was developed and piloted during the WAISfest in 2013. The second phase needs further voting on the most suitably adapted symbols for use when communicating with others. There is a requirement to have mechanisms for evaluating the outcome of the votes, where symbols fail to represent accurate meanings, have inappropriate colours, representations and actions etc. There also remains the need to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Not easy in a climate of acceptance of the expert view, a culture where to be critical can be a problem and time is not of the essence.
