The security of industrial control systems in critical infrastructure is a concern for the Australian government and other nations. There is a need to provide local Australian training and education for both control system engineers and information technology professionals. This paper proposes a postgraduate curriculum of four courses to provide knowledge and skills to protect critical infrastructure industrial control systems. Our curriculum is unique in that it provides security awareness but also the advanced skills required for security specialists in this area. We are aware that in the Australian context there is a cultural gap between the thinking of control system engineers who are responsible for maintaining and designing critical infrastructure and information technology professionals who are responsible for protecting these systems from cyber attacks. Our curriculum aims to bridge this gap by providing theoretical and practical exercises that will raise the awareness and preparedness of both groups of professionals.

This book examines different aspects of Asian popular culture, including films, TV, music, comedy, folklore, cultural icons, the Internet and theme parks. It raises important questions such as – What are the implications of popularity of Asian popular culture for globalization? Do regional forces impede the globalizing of cultures? Or does the Asian popular culture flow act as a catalyst or conveying channel for cultural globalization? Does the globalization of culture pose a threat to local culture? It addresses two seemingly contradictory and yet parallel processes in the circulation of Asian popular culture: the interconnectedness between Asian popular culture and western culture in an era of cultural globalization that turns subjects such as Pokémon, Hip Hop or Cosmopolitan into truly global phenomena, and the local derivatives and versions of global culture that are necessarily disconnected from their origins in order to cater for the local market. It thereby presents a collective argument that, whilst local social formations, and patterns of consumption and participation in Asia are still very much dependent on global cultural developments and the phenomena of modernity, yet such dependence is often concretized, reshaped and distorted by the local media to cater for the local market. As technology continues to become more accessible, miniaturised and diffused into the environment, the potential of wearable technology to impact our lives in significant ways becomes increasingly viable. Wearables afford unique interaction, communication and functional capabilities between users, their environment as well as access to information and digital data. Wearables also demand an inter-disciplinary approach and, depending on the purpose, can be fashioned to transcend cultural, national and spatial boundaries. This paper presents the Cloud Workshop project based on the theme of ‘Wearables and Wellbeing; Enriching connections between citizens in the Asia-Pacific region’, initiated through a cooperative partnership between Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and Griffith University (GU). The project was unique due to its inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural and inter-national scope that occurred simultaneously between Australia and Hong Kong.

O estudo propõe uma reflexão sobre o Direito à Cultura sob a ótica dos Direitos Fundamentais por meio de uma abordagem contextualizada com as formas em que este direito, seja pelo enfoque individual, seja pelo aspecto coletivo, se concretiza e com as atuações estatais que contribuem para tanto em um cenário de prevalência do modo de vida urbano não só nas cidades, mas também em comunidades outrora tidas como rurais, mas que absorvem progressivamente o modo de vida urbano. A Constituição Federal reconhece amplamente os Direitos Culturais, tendo-os como direitos imprescindíveis para a dignidade da pessoa humana em uma vida em sociedade, mas também impondo ao Poder Público que articule as Políticas Públicas proporcionando instrumentos para que as relações sociais desenvolvam-se em um ambiente de respeito à diversidade cultural e de fomento às manifestações culturais, por ver nelas um patrimônio do povo brasileiro e um espaço de exercício da personalidade de cada indivíduo. Para tanto, a dissertação apresenta uma ampla pesquisa sobre a legislação relacionada com o setor e mostra como estas Políticas Públicas podem estimular a Economia da Cultura em prol de um novo modelo de desenvolvimento, mais sustentável do que o paradigma industrial apresenta.

Dinoflagellate cyst records were analysed from four sediment cores from the inner Oslofjord. The cores covered the pre-industrial period, and the most important period of human population growth associated with industrial development of the region, from the mid-1800s to the present, including the reported development of cultural eutrophication. Comparisons between the cyst records and the known history of eutrophication suggest cyst signals that should prove useful for tracing the development of eutrophication. The eutrophication signal consisted of a doubling of total cyst concentration, and a marked increase in one species in particular,Lingulodinium machaerophorum(from <5 to around 50% of the assemblages) with increased eutrophication. In the core considered most representative of general water quality in the inner fjord, these trends reversed back to pre-industrial levels during the 1980s and 1990s when improved sewage treatment took effect.

This paper aims to offer new theoretical and empirical insights into power dynamics in an industrial supplier workshop setting. Theoretically, it advances an institutional perspective on supplier workshops as an important venue in managing, preserving and instituting industrial market power. Based on a detailed ethnographic analysis of an industrial workshop setting, this article investigates the institutional maintenance work of Retail Co. in preserving the power dynamics of market dominance in business exchanges and market structures. Our findings revealed three previously unreported insights into the subtle, but nonetheless pervasive power from institutional maintenance work in an industrial workshop setting. First, the institutional workshop work comprised a cultural performance; constituting socialization practice through a performance game, the power of numbers in field comprehension and an award ceremony. Second, the institutional workshop work mobilized projective agency, stipulating, directing and appealing for the instituting of distinct market rules and collective identities. Finally, the institutional workshop work increases supplier docility and utility via the regulative technologies-of-the-self to enhance business planning, operations and market decision-making practice, without necessarily being seen to be disciplinarian.

This thesis investigates the use and significance of X-ray crystallographic visualisations of molecular structures in postwar British material culture across scientific practice and industrial design. It is based on research into artefacts from three areas: X-ray crystallographers’ postwar practices of visualising molecular structures using models and diagrams; the Festival Pattern Group scheme for the 1951 Festival of Britain, in which crystallographic visualisations formed the aesthetic basis of patterns for domestic objects; and postwar furnishings with a ‘ball-and-rod’ form and construction reminiscent of those of molecular models. A key component of the project is methodological. The research brings together subjects, themes and questions traditionally covered separately by two disciplines, the history of design and history of science. This focus necessitated developing an interdisciplinary set of methods, which results in the reassessment of disciplinary borders and productive cross-disciplinary methodological applications. This thesis also identifies new territory for shared methods: it employs network models to examine cross-disciplinary interaction between practitioners in crystallography and design, and a biographical approach to designed objects that over time became mediators of historical narratives about science. Artefact-based, archival and oral interviewing methods illuminate the production, use and circulation of the objects examined in this research. This interdisciplinary approach underpins the generation of new historical narratives in this thesis. It revises existing histories of the cultural transmissions between X-ray crystallography and the production and reception of designed objects in postwar Britain. I argue that these transmissions were more complex than has been acknowledged by historians: they were contingent upon postwar scientific and design practices, material conditions in postwar Britain and the dynamics of historical memory, both scholarly and popular. This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one explores X-ray crystallographers’ visualisation practices, conceived here as a form of craft. Chapter two builds on this, demonstrating that the Festival Pattern Group witnesses the encounter between crystallographic practice, design practice and aesthetic ideologies operating within social networks associated with postwar modernisms. Chapters three and four focus on ball-and-rod furnishings in postwar and present-day Britain, respectively. I contend that strong relationships between these designed objects and crystallographic visualisations, for example the appellation ‘atomic design’, have been largely realised through historical narratives active today in the consumption of ‘retro’ and ‘mid-century modern’ artefacts. The attention to contemporary historical narratives necessitates this dual historical focus: the research is rooted in the period from the end of the Second World War until the early 1960s, but extends to the history of now. This thesis responds to the need for practical research on methods for studying cross-disciplinary interactions and their histories. It reveals the effects of submitting historical subjects that are situated on disciplinary boundaries to interdisciplinary interpretation. Old models, such as that of unidirectional ‘influence’, subside and the resulting picture is a refracted one: this study demonstrates that the material form and meaning of crystallographic visualisations, within scientific practice and across their use and echoes in designed objects, are multiple and contingent.

S. João da Madeira é uma localidade que desde cedo construiu os seus discursos em torno da identidade local sob o epíteto de Cidade do Trabalho. Mais recentemente, desde a última década do século XX, a cidade começou a olhar para a sua dimensão industrial do ponto de vista do seu cunho patrimonial, dentro do quadro emergente das políticas culturais e de identidade, no qual as identidades particulares – como à escala local – se querem afirmar no plano global. Partindo de uma primeira análise dos processos contemporâneos de patrimonialização do industrial no contexto de S. João da Madeira, concretizados pela via dos museus e do turismo, num trabalho de projeto que se apresenta como fase de investigação preliminar de um futuro trabalho de doutoramento, questiona-se como a antropologia poderá pensar o conceito de cultura popular fora dos contextos normalmente a estes atribuídos e como, consequentemente, poderá problematizar as fronteiras daquilo que poderá ser considerado ou não Património Cultural Imaterial (PCI), categoria com a qual a disciplina está historicamente comprometida.

Se presenta memoria final de proyecto educativo que propone la estructuración de los bloques temáticos de la asignatura de tecnología industrial I perteneciente al bachillerato tecnológico, a través de dos grandes centros de interés, uno de ellos estará basado en el azulejo sevillano y el otro en el aprovechamiento energético del sol. Se realiza en el IES Pablo Picasso en Sevilla. Los objetivos son: superar el anquilosamiento de un sistema excesivamente teórico; despertar el interés por el derecho que asiste a los pueblos a conocer a su cultura, valorando nuestro patrimonio tecnológico como bien social e irrenunciable; promover un proceso de aprendizaje en la línea de 'aprender a aprender'; aproximar al alumno a un contexto sociolocacional cultural de su entorno; despertar en el alumnado interés por la experimentación y la investigación; permitir un acercamiento globalizador o interdisciplinar con otras áreas; fomentar y ejercitar la creatividad, la capacidad de diseño, organización a nivel grupal e ingenio investigando y construyendo artilugios con materiales de desecho; habilitar a adquirir conocimientos también fuera del aula; descubrir con ambas propuestas las posibilidades de integración laboral; contribuir a que el alumnado tengan cabezas bien hechas que no bien llenas. El proceso consta de varias fases: aproximación, conocimiento, implicación y aportaciones; organización por grupos, asumir roles, directrices a seguir; concreción de contenidos; de desarrollo, salidas diversas, recogida de información; elaboración y organización de 'carpetas-dossier'; elaboración de documentos resumen; revisión y montaje de documentos definitivos; presentación de trabajos.

El objetivo del trabajo es realizar una gu??a did??ctica para un v??deo realizado en la convocatoria 92/93, se trata de utilizar el entorno como recurso did??ctico, contribuir a la conservaci??n y respeto por el patrimonio cultural asturiano del que paisajes mineros e industriales forman parte fundamental, e integrar los MAVS como recursos did??cticos en el aula. El resultado es una unidad did??ctica que seg??n los autores es m??s bien un tema hist??rico local que puede constituirse como eje de los contenidos transversales siendo el profesor quien tiene que concretar su uso en funci??n de su propio proyecto.
