Os efeitos do vermicomposto de esterco de curral associado à calagem em atributos da fertilidade do solo foram avaliados através de experimento em vasos empregando um Latossolo Vermelho, distrófico, textura média. Cinco doses do vermicomposto (equivalentes a 0; 28; 42; 56 e 70 t ha-1, peso seco) e cinco doses de calcário (visando elevar a saturação por bases a: 20; 30; 40; 50 e 60%) foram combinadas em esquema fatorial, sendo as amostras de solo incubadas por 180 dias. Para comparação entre o vermicomposto e o esterco de curral, amostras do mesmo solo receberam o equivalente a 70 t ha-1 do esterco de curral que originou o vermicomposto e as cinco doses de calcário listadas anteriormente. Através do cálculo do Índice de Eficiência Agronômica, foi verificado que o potencial de fornecimento de K e de Mg pelo esterco é maior do que o do vermicomposto, e que o de P, é semelhante. O vermicomposto aumentou os teores de Ca2+ e de matéria orgânica (MO), os valores de pH em CaCl2 e a CTC a pH 7. Com o aumento das doses de vermicomposto houve diminuição do C-ácidos húmicos e aumento do C-humina e com a calagem o C-total não aumentou mas houve diminuição do C-ácidos húmicos.

An investigation was made of the influence of alkaline extraction on the characteristics of humic substances extracted from Brazilian soil samples. Humic substances (HS) from seven different soils samples collected in Brazil were extracted using the procedure recommended by the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS). Soils, HS and humins were characterized by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. About 8 mg of each material (soil, HS and humin) were placed in a platinum crucible and heated continuously from 20 to 750 degrees C at a heating rate of 10 degrees C min(-1) in an atmosphere of synthetic air (100 ml min(-1)). A thermal analysis revealed a difference between the content and structural characteristics of organic matter present in HS and humin fractions in relation to their soils. The results indicated that alkaline extraction alters the characteristics of humic substances during the extraction process, underlining the importance of developing methodologies and analytical procedures that allow organic matter in soils to be studied without extracting it. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) has been evaluated by analyzing rich-humic water samples from tropical rivers. The samples were spiked with atrazine at ppb level Different pHs (4 to 9) and humic concentrations (2.5 to 40 mg L-1) were investigated. The assay performance showed a strong dependence on the pH values and amount of humic matter at low atrazine concentration. From all the conditions studied the low pH (pH 4) and high humic substances concentrations (40 mg L-1) showed the greatest influence. The IC50 value to control sample (no humic) diminished from 0.28 nmol L-1 to 0.64 nmol L-1 to humic acid solution. This effect is specially noted for the humic acid fractions, since fulvic acid fractions showed no significant change on the immunoassay results. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that at basic pH the matrix effect produced by the natural Brazilian water sample containing humic substances even at 40 mg L-1 disappears. Therefore, the ELISA method used to determine atrazine, can be employed to determine this pesticide in water samples containing humic substances without prior preparation.

Labile metal species in aquatic humic substances (HSs) were characterized by ion exchange on cellulose phosphate (CellPhos) by applying an optimized batch procedure. The HSs investigated were pre-extracted from humic-rich waters by ultrafiltration and a resin XAD 8 procedure. The HS-metal species studied were formed by complexation with Cd(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II) as a function of time and the ratio ions to HSs. The kinetics and reaction order of this exchange process were studied. At the beginning (<3 min), the labile metal fractions are separated relatively quickly. After 3 min, the separation of the metal ions proceeds with uniform half-lives of about 12-14 min, revealing rather slow first-order kinetics. The metal exchange between HSs and CellPhos exhibited the following order of metal lability with the studied HSs: Cu > Pb > Mn > Ni > Cd. The required metal determinations were carried out by atomic absorption spectrometry.

The influence of structural features of tropical river humic substances (HS) on their capability to reduce mercury(II) in aqueous solutions was studied. The HS investigated were conventionally isolated from Rio Negro water-Amazonas State/Brazil by means of the collector XAD 8. In addition, the isolated HS were on-line fractionated by tangential-flow multistage ultrafiltration (nominal molecular-weight cut-offs: 100, 50, 30, 10, 5 kDa) and characterized by potentiometry and UV/VIS spectroscopy. The reduction of Hg(II) ions to elemental Hg by size-fractions of Rio Negro HS was assessed by cold-vapor AAS (CVAAS). UV/VIS spectrometry revealed that the fractions of high molecular-size (F-1 > 100 kDa and F-2: 50-100 kDa) have a higher aromaticity compared to the fractions of small molecular-size (F-5: 5-10 kDa, F-6: < 5 kDa). In contrast, the potentiometric study showed different concentration of functional groups in the studied HS fractions. The reduction of Hg(II) by aquatic HS fractions at pH 5 proceeded in two steps (I, II) of slow first order kinetics (t(1/2) of I: 160 min, t(1/2) of II: 300 min) weakly influenced by the molecular-size, in contrast to the differing degree of Hg(II) reduction (F-5 > F-2 > > F-1 > F-3 > F-4 > > F-6). Accordingly, Hg(II) ions were preferably reduced by HS molecules having a relatively high ratio of phenolic/carboxylic groups and a small concentration of sulfur. From these results a complex 'competition' between reduction and complexation of mercury(II) by aquatic HS occurring in tropical rivers such as the Rio Negro can be suggested. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the lability/inertness metal fractions complexed by aquatic humic substances (HS) in relation to pH, complexation time, and HS concentration. HS were preconcentrated by ultrafiltration and complexed with bivalent metal ions. These fractions were characterized by ion exchange with the chelating collector cellulose Hyphan by applying batch procedure. The metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The results show that the distribution coefficients, Kd, decreased with HS presence, and that the relative lability of metal fractions complexed by HS is dependent on variables such as pH, complexation time, and HS concentration. Until c.a. 15 min, the metal change between aquatic HS and ion exchanger occurs following a 2 order reaction. Afterwards, the remaining metal fraction in the HS reacts following a 1st order reaction. For traces of metal ions bound to dissolved HS, the lability orderPb > Mn > Cd, Ni > Cu is revealed. ©1997 Soc. Bras. Química.

The aquatic humic substances (HS) investigated in this study with respect to their binding capability towards mercury(II) were isolated from the river Rio Negro, Amazonas State - Brazil, by means of the adsorbent XAD 8. Labile/inert fractions of inorganic Hg(II) complexes formed with these HS were characterized using an ion-exchange batch and column technique, respectively, based on Chelite S. This collector exhibits high Hg(II) distribution coefficients, Kd, up to the order of 104 decreasing, however, in the case of small Hg(II)/HS ratios (< 0.1 μg Hg(II) / mg HS). The influence of different complexation parameters (ratio of Hg(II)/HS, pH, contact time, complexing time) relevant for Hg(II) binding in aquatic environments was assessed. The Hg(II) lability in dissolved HS is mainly influenced by the mass ratio of Hg(II)/HS and the ageing of Hg(II)-HS species formed. This is particularly obvious in the case of low Hg(II) loading of HS where slow transformation processes of freshly formed Hg(II)-HS species significantly decrease their lability, leading to incomplete recoveries (< 20%) of the total Hg(II) bound to HS.

In this study, four leachates samples from 3 different landfills localized in the north of Portugal were characterized and fractionated, to understand the decomposition degree and to evaluate their potential as an agent for fertilization. Humic substances (HS) were extracted, quantified, chemical characterized and further fractionated in humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA). Keeping in mind the purpose to use these fractions as fertilizers, the phytotoxicity of HS, HA and FA solutions was evaluated on cress seed germination. The HS concentration was similar for all the leachates evaluated and was higher than 780 mg/L of total organic carbon. All the leachates analysed registered higher FA concentration than HA. The chemical characterization indicated that HA had a relatively higher aromatic character than the FA obtained from same sources. These results suggest that the HS from landfill leachates were in an early stage of humification, once the degree of humification increase as the landfilling age increase. Overall, the HS extracts showed absence of phytotoxicity, with germination index greater than 80% for samples treated to achieve low electric conductivity values. This suggests that the HS from the leachate may be used to produce liquid organic fertilizers.

This paper describes an approach to introducing fraction concepts using generic software tools such as Microsoft Office's PowerPoint to create "virtual" materials for mathematics teaching and learning. This approach replicates existing concrete materials and integrates virtual materials with current non-computer methods of teaching primary students about fractions. The paper reports a case study of a 12-year-old student, Frank, who had an extremely limited understanding of fractions. Frank also lacked motivation for learning mathematics in general and interacted with his peers in a negative way during mathematics lessons. In just one classroom session involving the seamless integration of off-computer and on-computer activities, Frank acquired a basic understanding of simple common equivalent fractions. Further, he was observed as the session progressed to be an enthusiastic learner who offered to share his learning with his peers. The study's "virtual replication" approach for fractions involves the manipulation of concrete materials (folding paper regions) alongside the manipulation of their virtual equivalent (shading screen regions). As researchers have pointed out, the emergence of new technologies does not mean old technologies become redundant. Learning technologies have not replaced print and oral language or basic mathematical understanding. Instead, they are modifying, reshaping, and blending the ways in which humankind speaks, reads, writes, and works mathematically. Constructivist theories of learning and teaching argue that mathematics understanding is developed from concrete to pictorial to abstract and that, ultimately, mathematics learning and teaching is about refinement and expression of ideas and concepts. Therefore, by seamlessly integrating the use of concrete materials and virtual materials generated by computer software applications, an opportunity arises to enhance the teaching and learning value of both materials.

This paper reports on the research and development of an ICT tool to facilitate the learning of ratio and fractions by adult prisoners. The design of the ICT tool was informed by a semiotic framework for mathematical meaning-making. The ICT tool thus employed multiple semiotic resources including topological, typological, and social-actional resources. The results showed that individual semiotic resource could only represent part of the mathematical concept, while at the same time it might signify something else to create a misconception. When multiple semiotic resources were utilised the mathematical ideas could be better learnt.
