In 2004, both Illinois EPA and U.S. EPA investigated the location of a former battery cracking and recycling operation in Gilberts. The main site is located immediately north of the intersection of Railroad and Mill Streets bounded to Galligan Road on the east and the Chicago and Northwestern Railway on the west. It is in an area that is mostly wooded near both industrial and residential properties. Lead acid batteries were cracked open to recover the lead. Some of the lead seeped into the ground along with acid contained in the batteries. Extensive environmental sampling last summer identified a six-acre area of gross contamination (mainly lead). Later, a second area of contamination was discovered to the southwest, where the Village of Gilberts Public Works building is now located, west of the railroad tracks - this is known as the Tower Hill Road site.

Compared to other volatile carbonylic compounds present in outdoor air, formaldehyde (CH2O) is the most toxic, deserving more attention in terms of indoor and outdoor air quality legislation and control. The analytical determination of CH2O in air still presents challenges due to the low-level concentration (in the sub-ppb range) and its variation with sampling site and time. Of the many available analytical methods for carbonylic compounds, the most widespread one is the time consuming collection in cartridges impregnated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine followed by the analysis of the formed hydrazones by HPLC. The present work proposes the use of polypropylene hollow porous capillary fibers to achieve efficient CH2O collection. The Oxyphan (R) fiber (designed for blood oxygenation) was chosen for this purpose because it presents good mechanical resistance, high density of very fine pores and high ratio of collection area to volume of the acceptor fluid in the tube, all favorable for the development of air sampling apparatus. The collector device consists of a Teflon pipe inside of which a bundle of polypropylene microporous capillary membranes was introduced. While the acceptor passes at a low flow rate through the capillaries, the sampled air circulates around the fibers, impelled by a low flow membrane pump (of the type used for aquariums ventilation). The coupling of this sampling technique with the selective and quantitative determination of CH2O, in the form of hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) after derivatization with HSO3-, by capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (CE-(CD)-D-4) enabled the development of a complete analytical protocol for the CH2O evaluation in air. The Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) is a simultaneous sampling campaign of the world's oceans which took place (for the first time) on the summer solstice (June 21st) in the year 2014. These cumulative samples, related in time, space and environmental parameters, provide insights into fundamental rules describing microbial diversity and function and contribute to the blue economy through the identification of novel, ocean-derived biotechnologies. We see OSD data as a reference data set for generations of experiments to follow in the coming decade. The present data set includes a description of each sample collected during the Ocean Sampling Day 2014 and provides contextual environmental data measured concurrently with the collection of water samples for genomic analyses.

Archaeological fish otoliths have the potential to serve as proxies for both season of site occupation and palaeoclimate conditions. By sampling along the distinctive sub-annual seasonal bands of the otolith and completing a stable isotope (δ¹⁸O, δ¹³C) analysis, variations within the fish’s environment can be identified. Through the analysis of cod otoliths from two archaeological sites on Kiska Island, Gertrude Cove (KIS-010) and Witchcraft Point (KIS-005), this research evaluates a micromilling methodological approach to extracting climatic data from archaeological cod otoliths. In addition, δ¹⁸Ootolith data and radiocarbon dates frame a discussion of Pacific cod harvesting, site occupation, and changing climatic conditions on Kiska Island. To aid in the interpretation of the archaeological Pacific cod results, archaeological and modern Atlantic cod otoliths were also analyzed as a component of this study to develop. The Atlantic cod otoliths provided the methodological and interpretative framework for the study, and also served to assess the efficacy of this sampling strategy for archaeological materials and to add time-depth to existing datasets. The δ¹⁸Ootolith values successfully illustrate relative variation in ambient water temperature. The Pacific cod δ¹⁸O values demonstrate a weak seasonal signal identifiable up to year 3, followed by relatively stable values until year 6/7 when values continuously increase. Based on the δ¹⁸O values, the Pacific cod were exposed to the coldest water temperatures immediately prior to capture. The lack of a clear cycle of seasonal variation and the continued increase in values towards the otolith edge obscures the season of capture, and indicates that other behavioural, environmental, or methodological factors influenced the otolith δ¹⁸O values. It is suggested that Pacific cod would have been harvested throughout the year, and the presence of cod remains in Aleutian archaeological sites cannot be used as a reliable indicator of summer occupation. In addition, when the δ¹⁸O otolith values are integrated with radiocarbon dates and known climatic regimes, it is demonstrated that climatic conditions play an integral role in the pattern of occupation at Gertrude Cove. Initial site occupation coincides with the end of a neoglacial cooling period, and the most recent and continuous occupation coincides with the end of a localized warming period and the onset of the Little Ice Age (LIA).

Sustainability can be indicated by a number of factors. Populations need to be aged evenly, ensuring a healthy equilibrium. Job opportunities must be numerous and of wide varieties to balance incomes from different employment sectors. Regions must also sustain vital natural resources in the area which are directly related to a place being self-sustaining. These indicators prove to be true, especially in Newfoundland, where people have struggled to remain in the small traditional communities that they consider being there 'home.' The population of Corner Brook and the surrounding areas can be stratified according to the values people hold to their special place. Even though people in western Newfoundland hold strong ties to their home, some parts of the region even though people in western Newfoundland hold strong ties to their home, some parts of the region struggle with employment, low incomes, out-migration, and dependency on declining natural resources. The aim of this paper is to present the process of designing a sample strategy for a human values pilot survey conducted in the city of Corner Brook. It will present a theoretical background over the period 2002-2006 to be used for sampling strategy.

A photometric procedure for the determination of ClO(-) in tap water employing a miniaturized multicommuted flow analysis setup and an LED-based photometer is described. The analytical procedure was implemented using leucocrystal violet (LCV; 4,4', 4 ''-methylidynetris (N, N-dimethylaniline), C(25)H(31)N(3)) as a chromogenic reagent. Solenoid micropumps employed for solutions propelling were assembled together with the photometer in order to compose a compact unit of small dimensions. After control variables optimization, the system was applied for the determination of ClO(-) in samples of tap water, and aiming accuracy assessment samples were also analyzed using an independent method. Applying the paired t-test between results obtained using both methods, no significant difference at the 95% confidence level was observed. Other useful features include low reagent consumption, 2.4 mu g of LCV per determination, a linear response ranging from 0.02 up to 2.0 mg L(-1) ClO(-), a relative standard deviation of 1.0% (n = 11) for samples containing 0.2 mg L(-1) ClO(-), a detection limit of 6.0 mu g L(-1) ClO(-), a sampling throughput of 84 determinations per hour, and a waste generation of 432 mu L per determination.
