To study the stoichiometry dependence of irradiation e ects in fluorite-type mixed oxide nuclear fuel (UPuO2), ion implantation in La doped ceria was used. Cerium dioxide single crystals with 0 mol%, 5 mol% and 25 mol% La concentration were irradiated with 1 MeV Kr ions at 800 C. In-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) was utilized to observe the the damage process and defects created by the ion beam irradiation. Dislocation loops were observed after irradiation and were determined to be on {111} planes, but not on {220} or {200} planes. Ab substantial difference in the average size of dislocation loops for 0 %, 5% and 25% cases was observed at several doses. The growth rate of dislocation loops and the oxygen vacancy di usivity were found to be inversely correlated.

Acceptor-doped ceria has been recognized as a promising intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell electrode/electrolyte material. For practical implementation of ceria as a fuel cell electrolyte and for designing model experiments for electrochemical activity, it is necessary to fabricate thin films of ceria. Here, metal-organic chemical vapor deposition was carried out in a homemade reactor to grow ceria films for further electrical, electrochemical, and optical characterization. Doped/undoped ceria films are grown on single crystalline oxide wafers with/without Pt line pattern or Pt solid layer. Deposition conditions were varied to see the effect on the resultant film property. Recently, proton conduction in nanograined polycrystalline pellets of ceria drew much interest. Thickness-mode (through-plane, z-direction) electrical measurements were made to confirm the existence of proton conductivity and investigate the nature of the conduction pathway: exposed grain surfaces and parallel grain boundaries. Columnar structure presumably favors proton conduction, and we have found measurable proton conductivity enhancement. Electrochemical property of gas-columnar ceria interface on the hydrogen electrooxidation is studied by AC impedance spectroscopy. Isothermal gas composition dependence of the electrode resistance was studied to elucidate Sm doping level effect and microstructure effect. Significantly, preferred orientation is shown to affect the gas dependence and performance of the fuel cell anode. A hypothesis is proposed to explain the origin of this behavior. Lastly, an optical transmittance based methodology was developed to obtain reference refractive index and microstructural parameters (thickness, roughness, porosity) of ceria films via subsequent fitting procedure.

Herein, the preferential oxidation of CO in excess hydrogen (PROX reaction) was studied over Au catalysts supported on ceria and Y or Nb doped ceria. Both supports and catalysts have been extensively characterized by a number of advanced techniques; XRD, N2-adsortion, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and H2-TPR. The catalytic results showed that when an ideal mixture of H2 and CO is used for the PROX reaction the gold supported on pure ceria behaves better than the others samples. However, when a typical reformate gas composition containing CO2 and H2O is used, the gold supported on Nb doped sample behaves better than gold supported in pure ceria. It is suggested that niobium hampers the strong adsorption of CO2 and H2O in the active sites, thus improving the catalytic performance in real reformate gas.

Doped ceria (CeO2,) compounds are fluorite type oxides, which show oxide ionic conductivity higher than yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), in oxidizing atmospheres. As a consequence of this, considerable interest has been shown in application of these materials for 'low (500-650 degreesC)' or 'intermediate (650-800 degreesC)' temperature operation, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, the authors prepared two kinds of nanosize Sm-doped CeO2 particles with different morphologies: one type was round and the other was elongated. Processing these powders with different morphology produced dense materials with very different ionic conducting properties and different nanoscale microstructures. Since both particles are very fine and well dispersed, sintered bodies with high density (relative density >95% of theoretical) could be prepared using both types of powder particles. The electrical conductivity of sintered bodies prepared from these powders with different starting morphologies was very different. Materials prepared from particles having a round shape were much higher than those produced using powders with an elongated morphology. Measured activation energies of the corresponding sintered samples showed a similar trend; round particles (60 kJ/mol), elongated particles (74 kJ/mol). While X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles of these sintered materials were identical, diffuse scatter was observed in the back.-round of selected area electron diffraction pattern recorded from both sintered bodies. This indicated an underlying structure that appeared to have been influenced by the processing technology. Detailed observation using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) revealed that the size of microdomain with ordering of cations in the sintered body made from round shape particles was much smaller than that of the sintered body made from elongated particles. Accordingly, it is concluded that the morphology of doped CeO2 powders strongly influenced the microdomain size and electrolytic properties in the doped CeO2 sintered body. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Doped ceria (CeO2) compounds are fluorite-type oxides that show oxide ionic conductivity higher than yttria-stabilized zirconia in oxidizing atmosphere. As a consequence of this, considerable interest has been shown in application of these materials for low (500 degrees-650 degrees C) temperature operation of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). To improve the conductivity in dysprosium (Dy) doped CeO2, nano-size round shape particles were prepared using a coprecipitation method. The dense sintered bodies with small grain sizes (< 300 nm) were fabricated using a combined process of spark plasma sintering (SPS) and conventional sintering (CS). Dy-doped CeO2 sintered body with large grains (1.1 mu m) had large micro-domains. The conductivity in the sintered body was low (-3.2 S/cm at 500 degrees C). On the other hand, the conductivity in the specimens obtained by the combined process was considerably improved. The micro-domain size in the grain was minimized using the present process. It is concluded that the enhancement of conductivity in dense specimens produced by the combined process (SPS+CS) is attributable to the microstructural changes within the grains.

Doped ceria (CeO2) compounds are fluorite related oxides which show oxide ionic conductivity higher than yttria-stabilized zirconia in oxidizing atmosphere. As a consequence of this, a considerable interest has been shown in application of these materials for low (400-650 degrees C) temperature operation of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this paper, our experimental data about the influence of microstructure at the atomic level on electrochemical properties were reviewed in order to develop high quality doped CeO2 electrolytes in fuel cell applications. Using this data in the present paper, our original idea for a design of nanodomain structure in doped CeO2 electrolytes was suggested. The nanosized powders and dense sintered bodies of M doped CeO2 (M:Sm,Gd,La,Y,Yb, and Dy) compounds were fabricated. Also nanostiructural features in these specimens were introduced for conclusion of relationship between electrolytic properties and domain structure in doped CeO2. It is essential that the electrolytic properties in doped CeO2 solid electrolytes reflect in changes of microstructure even down to the atomic scale. Accordingly, a combined approach of nanostructure fabrication, electrical measurement and structure characterization was required to develop superior quality doped CeO2 electrolytes in the fuel cells.

In recent years, nanoscience and nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most important and exciting frontier areas of research interest in almost all fields of science and technology. This technology provides the path of many breakthrough changes in the near future in many areas of advanced technological applications. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary area of research and development. The advent of nanotechnology in the modern times and the beginning of its systematic study can be thought of to have begun with a lecture by the famous physicist Richard Feynman. In 1960 he presented a visionary and prophetic lecture at the meeting of the American Physical Society entitled “there is plenty of room at the bottom” where he speculated on the possibility and potential of nanosized materials. Synthesis of nanomaterials and nanostructures are the essential aspects of nanotechnology. Studies on new physical properties and applications of nanomaterials are possible only when materials are made available with desired size, morphology, crystal structure and chemical composition. Cerium oxide (ceria) is one of the important functional materials with high mechanical strength, thermal stability, excellent optical properties, appreciable oxygen ion conductivity and oxygen storage capacity. Ceria finds a variety of applications in mechanical polishing of microelectronic devices, as catalysts for three-way automatic exhaust systems and as additives in ceramics and phosphors. The doped ceria usually has enhanced catalytic and electrical properties, which depend on a series of factors such as the particle size, the structural characteristics, morphology etc. Ceria based solid solutions have been widely identified as promising electrolytes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). The success of many promising device technologies depends on the suitable powder synthesis techniques. The challenge for introducing new nanopowder synthesis techniques is to preserve high material quality while attaining the desired composition. The method adopted should give reproducible powder properties, high yield and must be time and energy effective. The use of a variety of new materials in many technological applications has been realized through the use of thin films of these materials. Thus the development of any new material will have good application potential if it can be deposited in thin film form with the same properties. The advantageous properties of thin films include the possibility of tailoring the properties according to film thickness, small mass of the materials involved and high surface to volume ratio. The synthesis of polymer nanocomposites is an integral aspect of polymer nanotechnology. By inserting the nanometric inorganic compounds, the properties of polymers can be improved and this has a lot of applications depending upon the inorganic filler material present in the polymer.

Zr doping in ceria (CeO2) results in enhanced static dielectric response compared to pure ceria. On the other hand, Ti doping in ceria keeps its dielectric constant unchanged. We use first-principles density functional theory calculations based on pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis to determine electronic properties and dielectric response of Zr/Ti-doped and oxygen-vacancy-introduced ceria. Softening of phonon modes is responsible for the enhancement in dielectric response of Zr-doped ceria compared to that of pure ceria. The ceria-zirconia mixed oxides should have potential use as high-k materials in the semiconductor industry. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
