A solid paraffin-based carbon paste electrode modified with 2-aminothiazole organofunctionalized silica (SiAt-SPCPE) was applied to Ni2+ determination in commercial ethanol fuel samples. The proposed method comprised four steps: (1) Ni2+ preconcentration at open circuit potential directly in the ethanol fuel sample, (2) transference of the electrode to an electrochemical cell containing DMG, (3) differential pulse voltammogram registering and (4) surface regeneration by polishing the electrode. The proposed method combines the high Ni2+ adsorption capacity presented by 2-aminothiazole organofunctionalized silica with the electrochemical properties of the Ni(DMG)2 complex, whose electrochemical reduction provides the analytical signal. All experimental parameters involved in the proposed method were optimized. Using a preconcentration time of 20 min, it was obtained a linear range from 7.5 x 10(-9) to 1.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 with detection limit of 2.0 x 10(-9) mol L-1. Recovery values between 96.5 and 102.4% were obtained for commercial samples spiked with 1.0 mu mol L-1 Ni2+ and the developed electrode was totally stable in ethanolic solutions. The contents of Ni2+ found in the commercial samples using the proposed method were compared to those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy by using the F- and t-test. Neither the F- nor t-values exceeded the critical values at 95% confidence level, confirming that there are not statistical differences between the results obtained by both methods. These results indicate that the developed electrode can be successfully employed to reliable Ni2+ determination in commercial ethanol fuel samples without any sample pretreatment or dilution step. This work describes the synthesis and characterization of 2-aminothiazole-modified silica gel (SiAT), as well as its application for preconcentration (in batch and column technique) of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) in ethanol medium. The adsorption capacities of SiAT determined for each metal ion were (mmol g(-1)): Cu(II)=1.20, Ni(II)=1.10 and Zn(II)=0.90. In addition, results obtained in flow experiments, showed a recovery of ca. 100% of the metal ions adsorbed in a column packed with 500 mg of SiAT. The eluent was 2.0 mol L-1 HCl. The sorption-desorption of the studied metal ions made possible the development of a preconcentration method for metal ions at trace level in fuel ethanol using flame AAS for their quantification.

This paper describes the preparation of thin titanium films via sol-gel route and their subsequent chemical modification by anchoring with 2-aminothiazole ligand and Pd(II) ion sorption, aiming to maximize the photocatalytic activity. The material was characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electronic microscopy. The amount of palladium adsorbed on the film's surface, determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, showed a value of 2.69 x 10(16) atoms CM-2. The photocatalytic tests indicated that the functionalization with 2-aminothiazole and the adsorption of palladium (II) were determinants in the semiconductor's enhanced photocatalytic activity. A rapid and sensitive method was developed to determine trace levels of Cd2+ ions in an aqueous medium by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, using on-line preconcentration in a mini-column packed with 100 mg of 2-aminothiazol modified silica gel (SiAT). The Cd2+ ions were sorbed at pH 5.0. The preconcentrated Cd2+ ions were directly eluted from the column to the spectrometer's nebulizer-burner system using 100 μL of 2 mol L-1 hydrochloric acid. A retention efficiency of over 95% was achieved. The enrichment factor (calculated as the ratio of slopes of the calibration graphs) obtained with preconcentrations in a mini-column packed with SiAT (A = -1.3 × 10-3 + 1.8 × 10-3 [Cd2+]) and without preconcentrations (A = 4 × 10-5 + 3.5 × 10-3[Cd2+]), was 51 and the detection limit calculated was 0.38 μg L-1. The preconcentration procedure was applied to determine trace levels of Cd in river water samples. The optimum preconcentration conditions are discussed herein.

Synthesis, characterization, DFT simulation and biological assays of two new metal complexes of 2-(2-thienyl)benzothiazole - BTT are reported. The complexes [Ag(BTT)(2)NO3] - AgBTT2 and [Au(BTT)Cl]center dot 1/2H(2)O - AuBTT were obtained by mixing the ligand with silver (I) nitrate or gold(I) chloride in methanolic solution. Characterization of the complexes were based on elemental (C, H, N and S), thermal (TG-DTA) analysis, C-13 and H-1 NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic measurements, as well as the X-ray structure determination for AgBTT2. Spectroscopic data predicted by DFT calculations were in agreement with the experimental data for both complexes. The ligand BTT was synthesized by the condensation of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminothiophenol in a microwave furnace. AgBTT2 has a monomeric structure. Both complexes show a good activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Free BIT shows low antitubercular activity. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

2-(Diphenylphosphinomethyl)aniline. H2L1, reacts with [RuCl2(PPh3)(3)] to yield the monomeric complexes [RuCl2(H2L1)(PPh3)(CH3CN)], [RuCl2(H2L1)(2)]and the chloro-bridged dimer [(H2L1)(PPh3)Ru(mu-Cl)(2)Ru(PPh3) (H2L1)] depending on the conditions applied. Exclusively the monochelate [RuCl2 (H2L1)(dmso)(2)] is formed during reactions of H2L1 with [RuCl2(dmso)(4)]. H2L1 acts as a neutral, bidentate ligand in all complexes. The products are studied spectroscopically and by X-ray diffraction. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X=Cl-, Br-, ClO4-) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions: at 298 K. The following equilibria constants (in 1 mol(-1)) were determined: (a) CuCl2: 3.5 x 10(3) (ac), 2.0 x 10(3) (eth); (b) CuBr2: 2.8 x 10(3) (ac), 2.0 x 10(3) (eth); (c) Cu(ClO4)(2): 1.8 x 10(3) (ac), 1.0 x 10(3) (eth); ac = acetone, eth = ethanol. The electron spin resonance spectra of the surface complexes indicated a tetragonal distorted structure in the case of lower degrees of metal loading on the chemically modified surface. The d-d electronic transition spectra showed that for the ClO4-, complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading, and for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shifted to a higher energy region with a lower metal loading. The crystal structures of the rubidium and caesium complexes with 2-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (orthanilic acid), [Rb4(C6H6NO3S)4(H2O)]n (1) and [Cs(C6H6NO3S)]n (2) and have been determined at 200 K. Complex 1 has a repeating unit comprising four independent and different Rb coordination centres, (RbO8), (RbO7), (RbN2O4) and (RbO10), each having irregular stereochemistry and involving a number of bidentate chelate sulfonate-O,O’-metal and bridging interactions, giving a two-dimensional polymeric layered structure. Anhydrous complex 2 is also polymeric with the irregular (CsO7) coordination polyhedron comprising six sulfonate oxygen donors from three separate bidentate chelate sulfonate ligands and one monodentate bridging sulfonate oxygen, giving a two-dimensional layered structure.

New Mo(II) complexes with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (L1), [Mo(CH(3)CN)(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L1)]OTf (C1a) and [{MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L1)}(2)(4,4'-bipy)](PF(6))(2) (C1b), with {[bis(2-pyridyl)amino]carbonyl}ferrocene (L2), [MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L2)] (C2), and with the new ligand N,N-bis(ferrocenecarbonyl)-2-aminopyridine (L3), [MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L3)] (C3), were prepared and characterized by FTIR and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. C1a, C1b, L3, and C2 were also structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Mo(II) coordination sphere in all complexes features the facial arrangement of allyl and carbonyl ligands, with the axial isomer present in C1a and C2, and the equatorial in the binuclear C1b. In both C1a and C1b complexes, the L1 ligand is bonded to Mo(II) through the nitrogen atoms and the NH group is involved in hydrogen bonds. The X-ray single crystal structure of C2 shows that L2 is coordinated in a kappa(2)-N,N-bidentate chelating fashion. Complex C3 was characterized as [MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L3)] with L3 acting as a kappa(2)-N,O-bidentate ligand, based on the spectroscopic data, complemented by DFT calculations. The electrochemical behavior of the monoferrocenyl and diferrocenyl ligands L2 and L3 has been studied together with that of their Mo(II) complexes C2 and C3. As much as possible, the nature of the different redox changes has been confirmed by spectrophotometric measurements. The nature of the frontier orbitals, namely the localization of the HOMO in Mo for both in C2 and C3, was determined by DFT studies.

2-Aminothiazole covalently attached to a silica gel surface was prepared in order to obtain an adsorbent for Hg(II) ions having the following characteristics: good sorption capacity, chemical stability under conditions of use, and, especially, high selectivity. The accumulation voltammetry of mercury(II) was investigated at a carbon paste electrode chemically modified with silica gel functionalized with 2-aminothiazole (SIAMT-CPE). The repetitive cyclic voltammogram of mercury(II) solution in the potential range -0.2 to + 0.6 V versus Ag/AgCl (0.02 mol L-1 KNO3; V = 20 mV s(-1)) show two peaks one at about 0.1 V and other at 0.205 V. The anodic wave peak at 0.205 V is well defined and does not change during the cycles and it was therefore further investigated for analytical purposes using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry in differents supporting electrolytes. The mercury response was evaluated with respect to pH, electrode composition, preconcentration time, mercury concentration, cleaning solution, possible interferences and other variables. The precision for six determinations (n = 6) of 0.02 and 0.20 mg L-1 Hg(II) was 4.1 and 3.5% (relative standard deviation), respectively. The detection limit was estimated as 0.10 mu g L-1 mercury(II) by means of 3:1 current-to-noise ratio in connection with the optimization of the various parameters involved and using the highest-possible analyser sensitivity. Ternary metal complexes involving vitamin B6 with formulas [CO",(PN-H)](anCdI [OC)'(bpy)(PN)Cl]C10(.bpHy 0 = 2,2'-bipyridine, PN = neutral pyridoxine, PN-H = anionic pyridoxine) have been prepared for the first time and characterized by means of magnetic and spectroscopic measurements. The crystal structures of the compounds have also been determined. [CO(PN-H)](CcryIsOta,l)lize s in the space group P2,/c with a = 18.900 (3) A, b = 8.764 (1) A, c = 20.041 (2) A,p = 116.05 (l)', and Z = 4 and [Cu(bpy)(PN)C1]C104-H20in the space group Pi with a = 12.136 (5) A, b = 13.283 (4) A,c = 7.195 (2) A, a = 96.91 (Z)', 0 = 91.25 (3)', y = 71.63 (3)', and Z = 2. The structures were solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by least-squares techniques to R values of 0.080 and 0.042 for 3401 and 2094 independent reflections, respectively. Both structures consist of monomeric units. The geometry around Co(II1) is octahedral and around Cu(I1) is distorted square pyramidal. In [CO(PN-H)]t(wCo IoxOy~ge)n~s ,fro m phenolic and 4-(hydroxymethyl) groups of PN-H and two nitrogens from each of two bpy's form the coordination sphere. In [Cu(bpy)(PN)C1]C104.H20o ne PN and one bpy, with the same donor sites, act as bidentate chelates in the basal plane, with a chloride ion occupying the apical position. In both structures PN and PN-H exist in the tautomeric form wherein pyridine N is protonated and phenolic 0 is deprotonated. However, a novel feature of the cobalt compound is that PN-H is anionic due to the deprotonation of the 4-(hydroxymethyl) group. The packing in both structures is governed by hydrogen bonds, and in the copper compound partial stacking of bpy's at a distance of -3.55 also adds to the stability of the system. Infrared, NMR, and ligand field spectroscopic results and magnetic measurements are interpreted in light of the structures.

Divalent metal complexes of general formula M(2-nb)(2)(mc)(2)].2(2-nbH), where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) or Zn(II), 2-nbH = 2-nitrobenzoic acid and mc = methyl carbazate (NH2NHCOOCH3), have been prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Single-crystal X-ray study of the Cu(II) complex revealed that the molecule is centrosymmetric, with two N,O-chelating mc ligands in equatorial positions and a pair of monodentate 2-nb anions in the axial positions. The lattice 2-nbH molecules help to establish the packing of monomers through hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thermal stability and reactivity of the complexes were studied by TG-DTA. Emission studies show that these complexes are fluorescent.

Three new basal-apical, mu(2)-1,1-azide bridged complexes, [CuL1(N-3)](2) (1), [CuL2(N-3)](2) (2) and [CuL3(N-3)]2 (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff base blocking ligands [L-1=N-(3-aminopropyl) salicylaldimine, L-2=7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one and L-3=8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one) have been synthesised and their molecular structures determined by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1, there is no inter-dimer H-bonding. However, complexes 2 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by strong H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K reveal that complexes 1 and 2 have antiferromagnetic coupling while 3 has ferromagnetic coupling which is also confirmed by EPR spectra at 4-300 K. Magnetostructural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in complexes 2 and 3.
