Establishing a few sites in which measurements of soil water storage (SWS) are time stable significantly reduces the efforts involved in determining average values of SWS. This study aimed to apply a new criterion the mean absolute bias error (MABE)-to identify temporally stable sites for mean SWS evaluation. The performance of MABE was compared with that of the commonly used criterion, the standard deviation of relative difference (SDRD). From October 2004 to October 2008, SWS of four soil layers (0-1.0, 1.0-2.0,2.0-3.0, and 3.0-4.0 m) was measured, using a neutron probe, at 28 sites on a hillslope of the Loess Plateau, China. A total of 37 SWS data sets taken over time were divided into two subsets, the first consisting of 22 dates collected during the calibration period from October 2004 to September 2006, and the second with 15 dates collected during the validation period from October 2006 to October 2008. The results showed that if a critical value of 5% for MABE was defined, more than half the sites were temporally stable for both periods, and the number of temporally stable sires generally increased with soil depth. Compared with SDRD, MABE was more suitable for the identification of time-stable sites for mean SS prediction. Since the absolute prediction error of drier sites is more sensitive to changes in relative difference in terms of mean SWS prediction, the sites of wet sectors should be preferable for mean SWS prediction for the same changes in relative difference.

Nitroheterocyclic compounds (NC) were candidate drugs proposed for Chagas disease chemotherapy. In this study, we investigated the complexation of hydroxymethylnitrofurazone (NFOH), a potential antichagasic compound, with alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD), beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD), Dimethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (DM-beta-CD) and gamma-cyclodextrin (gamma-CD) by fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular modeling studies. Hildebrand-Benesi equation was used to calculate the formation constants of NFOH with cyclodextrins based on the fluorescence differences in the CDs solution. The complexing capacity of NFOH with different CDs was compared through the results of association constant according to the following order: DM-beta-CD > beta-CD > alpha-CD > HP-beta-CD > gamma-CD. Molecular modeling studies give support for the experimental assignments, in favor of the formation of an inclusion complex between cyclodextrins with NFOH. This is an important study to investigate the effects of different kinds of cyclodextrins on the inclusion complex formation with NFOH and to better characterize a potential formulations to be used as therapeutic options for the oral treatment of Chagas disease.

This work reports oil a novel nitrosyl-ruthenium complex hearing the azanaphthalene ligand quinazoline (qui) ill its coordination sphere. The product crystallizes with ail additional quinazoline molecule, yielding the compound cis-[Ru(bpy)(2)(qui)NO](PF(6))(3).(qui). This feature leads to all absorption band at lambda(max) = 430 nm in CH(3)CN and lambda(max) = 420 nm in phosphate buffer, which promotes the photorelease of nitric oxide under visible light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm), in 1 ethanol: 1 water (v/v) mixture or under physiological pH. Both the intensity and energy of this transition are dependent on solvent and solution pH, suggesting that the transition has a charge transfer nature, and that the association of the second quinazoline molecule with the complex is driven by weak interactions, possibly of the pi-stacking type. The trace element selenium (Se), once known only for its potential toxicity, is now a well-established essential micronutrient for mammals. The organoselenium compound diphenyl diselenide (DPDS) has shown interesting antioxidant and neuroprotective activities. On the other hand, this compound has also presented pro-oxidant and mutagenic effects. The compound 3`3-ditrifluoromethyldiphenyl diselenide (DFDD), a structural analog of diphenyl diselenide, has proven antipsychotic activity in mice. Nevertheless, as opposed to DPDS, little is known on the biological and toxicological properties of DFDD. In the present study, we report the genotoxic effects of the organoselenium compound DFDD on Salmonella typhimurium, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79 cells). DFDD protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-induced DNA damage in vitro are demonstrated. DFDD did not cause mutagenic effects on S. typhimurium or S. cerevisiae strains; however, it induced DNA damage in V79 cells at doses higher than 25 mu M, as detected by comet assay. DFDD protected S. typhimurium and S. cerevisiae against H(2)O(2)-induced mutagenicity, and, at doses lower than 12.5 mu M, prevented H(2)O(2)-induced genotoxicity in V79 cells. The in vitro assays demonstrated that DFDD mimics catalase activity better than DPDS, but neither presents Superoxide dismutase action. The products of the reactions of DFDD or DPDS with H(2)O(2) were different. as determined by electrospray mass spectrometry analysis (ESI-MS). These results suggest that DFDD is not mutagenic for bacteria or yeast; however, it may induce weak genotoxic effects on mammalian cells. In addition, DFDD has a protective effect against H(2)O(2)-induced damage probably by mimicking catalase activity, and the distinct products of the reaction DFDD with H(2)O(2) probably have a fundamental role in the protective effects of DFDD. Market-based transmission expansion planning gives information to investors on where is the most cost efficient place to invest and brings benefits to those who invest in this grid. However, both market issue and power system adequacy problems are system planers’ concern. In this paper, a hybrid probabilistic criterion of Expected Economical Loss (EEL) is proposed as an index to evaluate the systems’ overall expected economical losses during system operation in a competitive market. It stands on both investors’ and planner’s point of view and will further improves the traditional reliability cost. By applying EEL, it is possible for system planners to obtain a clear idea regarding the transmission network’s bottleneck and the amount of losses arises from this weak point. Sequentially, it enables planners to assess the worth of providing reliable services. Also, the EEL will contain valuable information for moneymen to undertake their investment. This index could truly reflect the random behaviors of power systems and uncertainties from electricity market. The performance of the EEL index is enhanced by applying Normalized Coefficient of Probability (NCP), so it can be utilized in large real power systems. A numerical example is carried out on IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS), which will show how the EEL can predict the current system bottleneck under future operational conditions and how to use EEL as one of planning objectives to determine future optimal plans. A well-known simulation method, Monte Carlo simulation, is employed to achieve the probabilistic characteristic of electricity market and Genetic Algorithms (GAs) is used as a multi-objective optimization tool.

The recent report of an ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH) in the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta and several other Lepidoptera prompted the search for the homologous hormone in the pest noctuid, Helicoverpa armigera. In M. sexta, ETH is produced in a large cell that forms part of a three-cell epitracheal gland complex found near each of the the larval and pupal spiracles. The homologous glands were found in H. armigera and an ecdysis-triggering function of the gland contents was confirmed by the induction of premature ecdysis after injection of a crude gland extract into pupae.

A new cyclic octapeptide, cyclo(Ile-Ser-(Gly)Thz-Ile-Thr-(Gly)Thz) (PatN), related to patellamide A, has been synthesized and reacted with copper(II) and base to form mono- and dinuclear complexes. The coordination environments around copper(TI) have been characterized by EPR spectroscopy. The solution structure of the thermodynamically most stable product, a purple dicopper(TI) compound, has been examined by simulating weakly dipole-dipole coupled EPR spectra based upon structural parameters obtained from force field (MM and MD) calculations. The MM-EPR method produces a saddle-shaped structure for [Cu-2(PatN)(OH2)(6)] that is similar to the known solution structure of patellamide A and the known solid-state structure of [Cu-2(AscidH(2))CO3(OH2)(2)]. Compared with the latter, [Cu-2(PatN)] has no carbonate bridge and a significantly flatter topology. The MM-EPR approach to solution-structure determination for paramagnetic metallopeptides may find wide applications to other metallopeptides and metalloproteins.

Objective: To evaluate whether including children with onset of symptoms between ages 7 and 12 years in the ADHD diagnostic category would: (a) increase the prevalence of the disorder at age 12, and (b) change the clinical and cognitive features, impairment profile, and risk factors for ADHD compared with findings in the literature based on the DSM-IV definition of the disorder. Method: A birth cohort of 2,232 British children was prospectively evaluated at ages 7 and 12 years for ADHD using information from mothers and teachers. The prevalence of diagnosed ADHD at age 12 was evaluated with and without the inclusion of individuals who met DSM-IV age-of-onset criterion through mothers` or teachers` reports of symptoms at age 7. Children with onset of ADHD symptoms before versus after age 7 were compared on their clinical and cognitive features, impairment profile, and risk factors for ADHD. Results: Extending the age-of-onset criterion to age 12 resulted in a negligible increase in ADHD prevalence by age 12 years of 0.1%. Children who first manifested ADHD symptoms between ages 7 and 12 did not present correlates or risk factors that were significantly different from children who manifested symptoms before age 7. Conclusions: Results from this prospective birth cohort might suggest that adults who are able to report symptom onset by age 12 also had symptoms by age 7, even if they are not able to report them. The data suggest that the prevalence estimate, correlates and risk factors of ADHD will not be affected if the new diagnostic scheme extends the age-of-onset criterion to age 12. J. Am. Acad. Compound forms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease have been recently associated with unusually severe neuropathies, an observation that prompted the proposition that the additive effects of two mutations should be searched in patients whose clinical severity falls outside the common CMT phenotypes. In this report, we present a father and a daughter with a very mild and unusual disease that segregates with two mutations in PMP22 gene, the 17p11.2-p12 duplication and a Ser72Leu point mutation. We propose that the deleterious effects of each mutation are partially compensated by the functional effect of the other.

Compound 48/80 (C48/80) is a synthetic condensation product of N-methyl-p-methoxyphenethyl am me with formaldehyde and is an experimental drug used since the 1950s to induce anaphylactic shock through histamine release. This study was carried out to further elucidate the mechanism by which this drug induces nitric oxide (NO) release. Our specific goals were: (a) to verify if C48/80`s relaxation occurs through the stimulation of histamine receptors; (b) to evaluate the endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by C48/80; (c) to identify NO as the endothelium-relaxing factor released by C48/80; (d) to identify the NO synthase (NOS) responsible for NO release; and (e) to verify if the relaxation induced by C48/80 is calcium and cyclic guanidine monophosphate (cGMP) dependent. Rabbit aorta segments, with and without endothelium, were suspended in organ chambers (25 ml) filled with Krebs solution maintained at 37 degrees C, bubbled with 95% O-2/5% CO2 (pH 7.4). Phenylephrine was used to contract the segments. Other protocol drugs included H-1- and H-2-receptor antagonists, cyclooxygenase, NOS, guanylyl cyclase and phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitors. Endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by C48/80 was also studied in calcium-free Krebs solution associated with a calcium chelator. In summary, our investigation demonstrated that the C48/80 vasodilating action: (a) does not depend on H-1 and H-2 histamine receptors; (b) is NO endothelium-dependent; (c) is dependent on the endothelial constitutive NOS (NOS-3) isoform activation; (d) is cGMP-dependent; and that NOS-3 activation by C48/80: (a) is independent of PLC up to 25 mu g/ml and (b) is partially dependent of this lipase in higher doses. Fluoride in drinking water may be present from natural sources or added as sodium fluoride (NaF), sodium silicofluoride (Na2SiF6) or fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6). Results from an early study with rats suggested that, when ingested as Na2SiF6, the absorption and excretion of fluoride were greater than when ingested as NaF. Objective: The present single-blind, crossover study with 10 adults was done to determine three key pharmacokinetic parameters: the maximum plasma fluoride concentrations (C-max), the elapsed time to reach the maximum concentrations (T-max) and the 6-h areas under the time-plasma concentration curves (AUCs) after ingestion of 500 ml, of water containing 0.67 or 5.45 mg F/L present naturally or added as NaF or H2SiF6. Design: Blood was collected prior to and at nine time points during 6 h after ingestion of the test solutions. Plasma was analysed by electrode after HMDS-facilitated diffusion and the data were analysed for statistically significant differences using repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The C-max, T-max and AUC values after ingestion of the solutions containing natural fluoride, NaF or H2SiF6 did not differ significantly at either dose level. Further, the Tmax values associated with the 0.67 and SAS mg/L solutions did not differ significantly indicating that the absorption, distribution and elimination rates were not affected by the dose size. Conclusions: Considered together with published reports, the present findings support the conclusion that the major features of fluoride metabolism are not affected differently by the chemical compounds commonly used to fluoridate water nor are they affected by whether the fluoride is present naturally or added artificially. Adsorption of one nondissociating and four dissociating aromatic compounds onto three untreated activated carbons from dilute aqueous solutions were investigated. All adsorption experiments were preformed in pH-controlled solutions. The experimental isotherms were analyzed using the homogeneous Langmuir model. The surface chemical properties of the activated carbons were characterized using a combination of water adsorption, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and mass titration. These data give rise to a new insight into the adsorption mechanism of aromatic solutes, in their molecular and ionic forms, onto untreated activated carbons. It was found that, for the hydrophilic activated carbons, the dominant adsorption forces were observed to be dipolar interactions when the solutes were in their molecular form whereas dispersive forces, such as pi-pi interactions, were most likely dominant in the case of the basic hydrophobic carbons. However, when the solutes were in their ionic form adsorption occurs in all cases through dispersive forces.

The compound Zr0.75Ce0.08Nd0.17O1.92 was investigated as part of a much larger electrical conductivity/microstructure study of the systems ZrO2-CeO2-M2O3 (where M=Nd, Sm, ..., Yb) [Solid State Ionics (2002)]. Electrical conductivity measurements performed in air at 800 degreesC showed significant conductivity degradation over a period of 200 h. Investigation of the annealed and as-fired specimens by ATEM revealed the presence of an emerging, ordered pyrochlore-type phase within the Zr0.75Ce0.08Nd0.17O1.92 defect-fluorite solid solution at much lower dopant levels than observed previously for zirconia binary systems.
