We give estimates of the intrinsic and the extrinsic curvature of manifolds that are isometrically immersed as cylindrically bounded submanifolds of warped products. We also address extensions of the results in the case of submanifolds of the total space of a Riemannian submersion.

We prove a Theorem on homotheties between two given tangent sphere bundles SrM of a Riemannian manifold (M,g) of dim ≥ 3, assuming different variable radius functions r and weighted Sasaki metrics induced by the conformal class of g. New examples are shown of manifolds with constant positive or with constant negative scalar curvature which are not Einstein. Recalling results on the associated almost complex structure I^G and symplectic structure ω^G on the manifold TM , generalizing the well-known structure of Sasaki by admitting weights and connections with torsion, we compute the Chern and the Stiefel-Whitney characteristic classes of the manifolds TM and SrM.

Purpose: The authors aim at developing a pseudo-time, sub-optimal stochastic filtering approach based on a derivative free variant of the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for solving the inverse problem of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) while making use of a shape based reconstruction strategy that enables representing a cross section of an inhomogeneous tumor boundary by a general closed curve. Methods: The optical parameter fields to be recovered are approximated via an expansion based on the circular harmonics (CH) (Fourier basis functions) and the EnKF is used to recover the coefficients in the expansion with both simulated and experimentally obtained photon fluence data on phantoms with inhomogeneous inclusions. The process and measurement equations in the pseudo-dynamic EnKF (PD-EnKF) presently yield a parsimonious representation of the filter variables, which consist of only the Fourier coefficients and the constant scalar parameter value within the inclusion. Using fictitious, low-intensity Wiener noise processes in suitably constructed ``measurement'' equations, the filter variables are treated as pseudo-stochastic processes so that their recovery within a stochastic filtering framework is made possible. Results: In our numerical simulations, we have considered both elliptical inclusions (two inhomogeneities) and those with more complex shapes (such as an annular ring and a dumbbell) in 2-D objects which are cross-sections of a cylinder with background absorption and (reduced) scattering coefficient chosen as mu(b)(a)=0.01mm(-1) and mu('b)(s)=1.0mm(-1), respectively. We also assume mu(a) = 0.02 mm(-1) within the inhomogeneity (for the single inhomogeneity case) and mu(a) = 0.02 and 0.03 mm(-1) (for the two inhomogeneities case). The reconstruction results by the PD-EnKF are shown to be consistently superior to those through a deterministic and explicitly regularized Gauss-Newton algorithm. We have also estimated the unknown mu(a) from experimentally gathered fluence data and verified the reconstruction by matching the experimental data with the computed one. Conclusions: The PD-EnKF, which exhibits little sensitivity against variations in the fictitiously introduced noise processes, is also proven to be accurate and robust in recovering a spatial map of the absorption coefficient from DOT data. With the help of shape based representation of the inhomogeneities and an appropriate scaling of the CH expansion coefficients representing the boundary, we have been able to recover inhomogeneities representative of the shape of malignancies in medical diagnostic imaging. We show that a large class of Cantor-like sets of R-d, d >= 1, contains uncountably many badly approximable numbers, respectively badly approximable vectors, when d >= 2. An analogous result is also proved for subsets of R-d arising in the study of geodesic flows corresponding to (d+1)-dimensional manifolds of constant negative curvature and finite volume, generalizing the set of badly approximable numbers in R. Furthermore, we describe a condition on sets, which is fulfilled by a large class, ensuring a large intersection with these Cantor-like sets.

We study the null orbifold singularity in 2+1 d flat space higher spin theory as well as string theory. Using the Chern-Simons formulation of 2+1 d Einstein gravity, we first observe that despite the singular nature of this geometry, the eigenvalues of its Chern-Simons holonomy are trivial. Next, we construct a resolution of the singularity in higher spin theory: a Kundt spacetime with vanishing scalar curvature invariants. We also point out that the UV divergences previously observed in the 2-to-2 tachyon tree level string amplitude on the null orbifold do not arise in the at alpha' -> infinity limit. We find all the divergences of the amplitude and demonstrate that the ones remaining in the tensionless limit are physical IR-type divergences. We conclude with a discussion on the meaning and limitations of higher spin (cosmological) singularity resolution and its potential connection to string theory.

We consider Ricci flow invariant cones C in the space of curvature operators lying between the cones ``nonnegative Ricci curvature'' and ``nonnegative curvature operator''. Assuming some mild control on the scalar curvature of the Ricci flow, we show that if a solution to the Ricci flow has its curvature operator which satisfies R + epsilon I is an element of C at the initial time, then it satisfies R + epsilon I is an element of C on some time interval depending only on the scalar curvature control. This allows us to link Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and Ricci flow convergence when the limit is smooth and R + I is an element of C along the sequence of initial conditions. Another application is a stability result for manifolds whose curvature operator is almost in C. Finally, we study the case where C is contained in the cone of operators whose sectional curvature is nonnegative. This allows us to weaken the assumptions of the previously mentioned applications. In particular, we construct a Ricci flow for a class of (not too) singular Alexandrov spaces.

This thesis introduces fundamental equations and numerical methods for manipulating surfaces in three dimensions via conformal transformations. Conformal transformations are valuable in applications because they naturally preserve the integrity of geometric data. To date, however, there has been no clearly stated and consistent theory of conformal transformations that can be used to develop general-purpose geometry processing algorithms: previous methods for computing conformal maps have been restricted to the flat two-dimensional plane, or other spaces of constant curvature. In contrast, our formulation can be used to produce---for the first time---general surface deformations that are perfectly conformal in the limit of refinement. It is for this reason that we commandeer the title Conformal Geometry Processing.
The main contribution of this thesis is analysis and discretization of a certain time-independent Dirac equation, which plays a central role in our theory. Given an immersed surface, we wish to construct new immersions that (i) induce a conformally equivalent metric and (ii) exhibit a prescribed change in extrinsic curvature. Curvature determines the potential in the Dirac equation; the solution of this equation determines the geometry of the new surface. We derive the precise conditions under which curvature is allowed to evolve, and develop efficient numerical algorithms for solving the Dirac equation on triangulated surfaces.
From a practical perspective, this theory has a variety of benefits: conformal maps are desirable in geometry processing because they do not exhibit shear, and therefore preserve textures as well as the quality of the mesh itself. Our discretization yields a sparse linear system that is simple to build and can be used to efficiently edit surfaces by manipulating curvature and boundary data, as demonstrated via several mesh processing applications. We also present a formulation of Willmore flow for triangulated surfaces that permits extraordinarily large time steps and apply this algorithm to surface fairing, geometric modeling, and construction of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces.

The second variation of the action is used as the Lagrangian governing the evolution of small perturbations of differentially rotating stellar models. In Newtonian gravity this leads to linear dynamical stability criteria already known. In general relativity it leads to a new sufficient condition for the stability of such models against arbitrary perturbations.
By introducing three scalar fields defined by

(where ᵴ is the vector displacement of the perturbed fluid element, ρ is the mass-density, and i, is an arbitrary vector), the Newtonian stability criteria are greatly simplified for the purpose of practical applications. The relativistic stability criterion is not yet in a form that permits practical calculations, but ways to place it in such a form are discussed.

A remarkable shell structure is described that, due to a particular combination of geometry and initial stress, has zero stiffness for any finite deformation along a twisting path; the shell is in a neutrally stable state of equilibrium. Initially the shell is straight in a longitudinal direction, but has a constant, nonzero curvature in the transverse direction. If residual stresses are induced in the shell by, for example, plastic deformation, to leave a particular resultant bending moment, then an analytical inextensional model of the shell shows it to have no change in energy along a path of twisted configurations. Real shells become closer to the inextensional idealization as their thickness is decreased; experimental thin-shell models have confirmed the neutrally stable configurations predicted by the inextensional theory. A simple model is described that shows that the resultant bending moment that leads to zero stiffness gives the shell a hidden symmetry, which explains this remarkable property.

We derive the generalized Friedmann equation governing the cosmological evolution inside the thick brane model in the presence of two curvature correction terms: a four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on the brane, and a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. We find two effective four-dimensional reductions of the generalized Friedmann equation in some limits and demonstrate that the reductions but not the generalized Friedmann equation can be rewritten as the first law of equilibrium thermodynamics on the apparent horizon of thick braneworld.

Dans cette thèse, nous analysons les propriétés géométriques des surfaces obtenues des solutions classiques des modèles sigma bosoniques et supersymétriques en deux dimensions ayant pour espace cible des variétés grassmanniennes G(m,n). Plus particulièrement, nous considérons la métrique, les formes fondamentales et la courbure gaussienne induites par ces surfaces naturellement plongées dans l'algèbre de Lie su(n). Le premier chapitre présente des outils préliminaires pour comprendre les éléments des chapitres suivants. Nous y présentons les théories de jauge non-abéliennes et les modèles sigma grassmanniens bosoniques ainsi que supersymétriques. Nous nous intéressons aussi à la construction de surfaces dans l'algèbre de Lie su(n) à partir des solutions des modèles sigma bosoniques. Les trois prochains chapitres, formant cette thèse, présentent les contraintes devant être imposées sur les solutions de ces modèles afin d'obtenir des surfaces à courbure gaussienne constante. Ces contraintes permettent d'obtenir une classification des solutions en fonction des valeurs possibles de la courbure. Les chapitres 2 et 3 de cette thèse présentent une analyse de ces surfaces et de leurs solutions classiques pour les modèles sigma grassmanniens bosoniques. Le quatrième consiste en une analyse analogue pour une extension supersymétrique N=2 des modèles sigma bosoniques G(1,n)=CP^(n-1) incluant quelques résultats sur les modèles grassmanniens. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous étudions les propriétés géométriques des surfaces associées aux solutions holomorphes des modèles sigma grassmanniens bosoniques. Nous donnons une classification complète de ces solutions à courbure gaussienne constante pour les modèles G(2,n) pour n=3,4,5. De plus, nous établissons deux conjectures sur les valeurs constantes possibles de la courbure gaussienne pour G(m,n). Nous donnons aussi des éléments de preuve de ces conjectures en nous appuyant sur les immersions et les coordonnées de Plücker ainsi que la séquence de Veronese. Ces résultats sont publiés dans la revue Journal of Geometry and Physics. Le troisième chapitre présente une analyse des surfaces à courbure gaussienne constante associées aux solutions non-holomorphes des modèles sigma grassmanniens bosoniques. Ce travail généralise les résultats du premier article et donne un algorithme systématique pour l'obtention de telles surfaces issues des solutions connues des modèles. Ces résultats sont publiés dans la revue Journal of Geometry and Physics. Dans le dernier chapitre, nous considérons une extension supersymétrique N=2 du modèle sigma bosonique ayant pour espace cible G(1,n)=CP^(n-1). Ce chapitre décrit la géométrie des surfaces obtenues des solutions du modèle et démontre, dans le cas holomorphe, qu'elles ont une courbure gaussienne constante si et seulement si la solution holomorphe consiste en une généralisation de la séquence de Veronese. De plus, en utilisant une version invariante de jauge du modèle en termes de projecteurs orthogonaux, nous obtenons des solutions non-holomorphes et étudions la géométrie des surfaces associées à ces nouvelles solutions. Cette thèse concerne le problème de trouver une notion naturelle de «courbure scalaire» en géométrie kählérienne généralisée. L'approche utilisée consiste à calculer l'application moment pour l'action du groupe des difféomorphismes hamiltoniens sur l'espace des structures kählériennes généralisées de type symplectique. En effet, il est bien connu que l'application moment pour la restriction de cette action aux structures kählériennes s'identifie à la courbure scalaire riemannienne. On se limite à une certaine classe de structure kählériennes généralisées sur les variétés toriques notée $DGK_{\omega}^{\mathbb{T}}(M)$ que l'on reconnaît comme étant classifiées par la donnée d'une matrice antisymétrique $C$ et d'une fonction réelle strictement convexe $\tau$ (ayant un comportement adéquat au voisinage de la frontière du polytope moment). Ce point de vue rend évident le fait que toute structure kählérienne torique peut être déformée en un élément non kählérien de $DGK_{\omega}^{\mathbb{T}}(M)$, et on note que cette déformation à lieu le long d'une des classes que R. Goto a démontré comme étant libre d'obstruction. On identifie des conditions suffisantes sur une paire $(\tau,C)$ pour qu'elle donne lieu à un élément de $DGK_{\omega}^{\mathbb{T}}(M)$ et on montre qu'en dimension 4, ces conditions sont également nécessaires. Suivant l'adage «l'application moment est la courbure» mentionné ci-haut, des formules pour des notions de «courbure scalaire hermitienne généralisée» et de «courbure scalaire riemannienne généralisée» (en dimension 4) sont obtenues en termes de la fonction $\tau$. Enfin, une expression de la courbure scalaire riemannienne généralisée en termes de la structure bihermitienne sous-jacente est dégagée en dimension 4. Lorsque comparée avec le résultat des physiciens Coimbra et al., notre formule suggère un choix canonique pour le dilaton de leur théorie.

This paper considers left-invariant control systems defined on the orthonormal frame bundles of simply connected manifolds of constant sectional curvature, namely the space forms Euclidean space E-3, the sphere S-3 and Hyperboloid H-3 with the corresponding frame bundles equal to the Euclidean group of motions SE(3), the rotation group SO(4) and the Lorentz group SO(1, 3). Orthonormal frame bundles of space forms coincide with their isometry groups and therefore the focus shifts to left-invariant control systems defined on Lie groups. In this paper a method for integrating these systems is given where the controls are time-independent. In the Euclidean case the elements of the Lie algebra se(3) are often referred to as twists. For constant twist motions, the corresponding curves g(t) is an element of SE(3) are known as screw motions, given in closed form by using the well known Rodrigues' formula. However, this formula is only applicable to the Euclidean case. This paper gives a method for computing the non-Euclidean screw motions in closed form. This involves decoupling the system into two lower dimensional systems using the double cover properties of Lie groups, then the lower dimensional systems are solved explicitly in closed form.
