The aim of this contribution is to present a theoretical approach and two experimental campaigns (on wind tunnel and on the track) concerning the research work about the ballast train-induced-wind erosion (BTIWE) phenomenon. When a high speed train overpasses the critical speed, it produces a wind speed close to the track large enough to start the motion of the ballast elements, eventually leading to the rolling of the stones (Kwon and Park, 2006) and, if these stones get enough energy, they can jump and then initiate a saltation-like chain reaction, as found in the saltation processes of soil eolian erosion (Bagnold, 1941). The expelled stones can reach a height which is larger than the lowest parts of the train, striking them (and the track surroundings) producing considerable damage that should be avoided. There is not much published work about this phenomenon, in spite of the great interest that exists due to its relevant applications in increasing the maximum operative train speed. Particularly, the initiation of flight of ballast due to the pass of a high speed train has been studied by Kwon and Park (2006) by performing field and wind tunnel experiments.

This paper describes the experimental setup, procedure, and results obtained, concerning the dynamics of a body lying on a floor, attached to a hinge, and exposed to an unsteady flow, which is a model of the initiation of rotational motion of ballast stones due to the wind generated by the passing of a high-speed train. The idea is to obtain experimental data to support the theoretical model developed in Sanz-Andres and Navarro-Medina (J Wind Eng Ind Aerodyn 98, 772–783, (2010), aimed at analyzing the initial phase of the ballast train-induced-wind erosion (BATIWE) phenomenon. The experimental setup is based on an open circuit, closed test section, low-speed wind tunnel, with a new sinusoidal gust generator mechanism concept, designed and built at the IDR/UPM. The tunnel’s main characteristic is the ability to generate a flow with a uniform velocity profile and sinusoidal time fluctuation of the speed. Experimental results and theoretical model predictions are in good agreement.

Heuristics for stochastic and dynamic vehicle routing problems are often kept relatively simple, in part due to the high computational burden resulting from having to consider stochastic information in some form. In this work, three existing heuristics are extended by three different local search variations: a first improvement descent using stochastic information, a tabu search using stochastic information when updating the incumbent solution, and a tabu search using stochastic information when selecting moves based on a list of moves determined through a proxy evaluation. In particular, the three local search variations are designed to utilize stochastic information in the form of sampled scenarios. The results indicate that adding local search using stochastic information to the existing heuristics can further reduce operating costs for shipping companies by 0.5–2 %. While the existing heuristics could produce structurally different solutions even when using similar stochastic information in the search, the appended local search methods seem able to make the final solutions more similar in structure.

The capability of cricket batsmen of different skill levels to pick-up information from the pre-release movement pattern of the bowler, from pre-bounce ball flight, and from post-bounce ball flight was examined experimentally. Six highly skilled and six low-skilled cricket batsmen batted against three different leg-spin bowlers while wearing liquid crystal spectacles. The spectacles permitted the specific information available to the batsmen on each trial to be manipulated such that vision was either: (i) occluded at a point prior to the point of ball release (thereby only allowing vision of advance information from the bowler's delivery action); (ii) occluded at a point prior to the point of bat[ bounce (thereby permitting the additional vision of pre-bounce ball flight); or (iii) not occluded (thereby permitting the additional vision of post-bounce bat[ flight information). Measurement was made on each trial of both the accuracy of the definitive (forward-backward) foot movements made by the batsmen and their success (or otherwise) in making bat-bat[ contact. The analyses revealed a superior capability of the more skilled players to make use of earlier (pre-bounce) bat[ flight information to guide successful bat-bat[ interception, thus mirroring the greater use of prospective information pick-up by skilled performers observed in other aspects of batting and in other time-constrained performance domains. This paper formulates several mathematical models for determining the optimal sequence of component placements and assignment of component types to feeders simultaneously or the integrated scheduling problem for a type of surface mount technology placement machines, called the sequential pick-andplace (PAP) machine. A PAP machine has multiple stationary feeders storing components, a stationary working table holding a printed circuit board (PCB), and a movable placement head to pick up components from feeders and place them to a board. The objective of integrated problem is to minimize the total distance traveled by the placement head. Two integer nonlinear programming models are formulated first. Then, each of them is equivalently converted into an integer linear type. The models for the integrated problem are verified by two commercial packages. In addition, a hybrid genetic algorithm previously developed by the authors is adopted to solve the models. The algorithm not only generates the optimal solutions quickly for small-sized problems, but also outperforms the genetic algorithms developed by other researchers in terms of total traveling distance.

Kuppikartongin yksi tärkeimmistä ominaisuuksista on reunaimeytymän vastustuskyky, joka tulee olla riittävällä tasolla laadun takaamiseksi. Koska yksinkertainen juomakuppi on bulkki¬tuote, ei sen raakareunaa kannata taloudellisuuden vuoksi suojata tätä varten kehitellyillä menetelmillä vaan itse kartongin tulee vastustaa nesteitä riittävässä määrin. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli selvittää hydrofobointiin käytettävän massaliiman (hartsi) sekä pintaliiman joukkoon annosteltavan lisäaineen välinen optimaalinen suhde parhaan vastustuskyvyn saavuttamiseksi. Lisäksi selvitettiin joidenkin liimapuristimen ajo-olosuhteiden vaikutusta pintaliiman pick-upiin sekä koneen pH-tason oikeellisuus. Jauhatuksen vaikutusta tutkittiin lähinnä historiatietojen avulla. Tutkimus koostui viidestä tehdasmittakaavaisesta koeajosta, joiden avulla selvitettiin muuttujien vaikutus sisäisellä reunaimeytymän määritysmenetelmällä sekä määrittä¬mällä koepisteistä kulloinkin mielenkiinnon kohteena olleet kemikaalipitoisuudet. Viimeisen koeajon koepisteet jalostettiin lisäksi valmiiksi kupeiksi.

PURPOSE The study aims to evaluate three-dimensionally (3D) the accuracy of implant impressions using a new resin splinting material, "Smart Dentin Replacement" (SDR). MATERIALS AND METHODS A titanium model of an edentulous mandible with six implant analogues was used as a master model and its dimensions measured with a coordinate measuring machine. Before the total 60 impressions were taken (open tray, screw-retained abutments, vinyl polysiloxane), they were divided in four groups: A (test): copings pick-up splinted with dental floss and fotopolymerizing SDR; B (test): see A, additionally sectioned and splinted again with SDR; C (control): copings pick-up splinted with dental floss and autopolymerizing Duralay® (Reliance Dental Mfg. Co., Alsip, IL, USA) acrylic resin; and D (control): see C, additionally sectioned and splinted again with Duralay. The impressions were measured directly with an optomechanical coordinate measuring machine and analyzed with a computer-aided design (CAD) geometric modeling software. The Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank test was used to compare groups. RESULTS While there was no difference (p = .430) between the mean 3D deviations of the test groups A (17.5 μm) and B (17.4 μm), they both showed statistically significant differences (p < .003) compared with both control groups (C 25.0 μm, D 19.1 μm). CONCLUSIONS Conventional impression techniques for edentulous jaws with multiple implants are highly accurate using the new fotopolymerizing splinting material SDR. Sectioning and rejoining of the SDR splinting had no impact on the impression accuracy.

A chip shooter machine in printed circuit board (PCB) assembly has three movable mechanisms: an X-Y table carrying a PCB, a feeder carrier with several feeders holding components and a rotary turret with multiple assembly heads to pick up and place components. In order to get the minimal placement or assembly time for a PCB on the machine, all the components on the board should be placed in a perfect sequence, and the components should be set up on a right feeder, or feeders since two feeders can hold the same type of components, and additionally, the assembly head should retrieve or pick up a component from a right feeder. The entire problem is very complicated, and this paper presents a genetic algorithm approach to tackle it.

Distributed Computing frameworks belong to a class of programming models that allow developers to
launch workloads on large clusters of machines. Due to the dramatic increase in the volume of
data gathered by ubiquitous computing devices, data analytic workloads have become a common
case among distributed computing applications, making Data Science an entire field of
Computer Science. We argue that Data Scientist's concern lays in three main components: a dataset,
a sequence of operations they wish to apply on this dataset, and some constraint they may have
related to their work (performances, QoS, budget, etc). However, it is actually extremely
difficult, without domain expertise, to perform data science. One need to select the right amount
and type of resources, pick up a framework, and configure it. Also, users are often running their
application in shared environments, ruled by schedulers expecting them to specify precisely their resource
needs. Inherent to the distributed and concurrent nature of the cited frameworks, monitoring and
profiling are hard, high dimensional problems that block users from making the right
configuration choices and determining the right amount of resources they need. Paradoxically, the
system is gathering a large amount of monitoring data at runtime, which remains unused.
In the ideal abstraction we envision for data scientists, the system is adaptive, able to exploit
monitoring data to learn about workloads, and process user requests into a tailored execution
context. In this work, we study different techniques that have been used to make steps toward
such system awareness, and explore a new way to do so by implementing machine learning
techniques to recommend a specific subset of system configurations for Apache Spark applications.
Furthermore, we present an in depth study of Apache Spark executors configuration, which highlight
the complexity in choosing the best one for a given workload.
