The utility of a hierarchically ordered nanoporous SBA-15 architecture, comprising 270 nm macropores and 5 nm mesopores (MM-SBA-15), for the catalytic aerobic selective oxidation of sterically challenging allylic alcohols is shown. Detailed bulk and surface characterization reveals that incorporation of complementary macropores into mesoporous SBA-15 enhances the dispersion of sub 2 nm Pd nanoparticles and thus their degree of surface oxidation. Kinetic profiling reveals a relationship between nanoparticle dispersion and oxidation rate, identifying surface PdO as the catalytically active phase. Hierarchical nanoporous Pd/MM-SBA-15 outperforms mesoporous analogues in allylic alcohol selective oxidation by (i) stabilizing PdO nanoparticles and (ii) dramatically improving in-pore diffusion and access to active sites by sesquiterpenoid substrates such as farnesol and phytol. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

A linear cation-decorated polymeric support with tuneable surface properties and microstructure has been prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP) of a pyrrolidinium-functionalised norbornene-based monomer with cyclooctene. The derived peroxophosphotungstate-based polymer-immobilised ionic liquid phase (PIILP) catalyst is an efficient and recyclable system for the epoxidation of allylic alcohols and alkenes, with only a minor reduction in performance on successive cycles.

The highly syn-selective hydrosilylation of allylic alcohols was developed which, following oxidation, provided 1,3 alcohols containing two contiguous stereocentres. Through judicious choice of silane the complementary anti-selective hydrosilylation was also developed. This protocol was applied to the synthesis of an all syn polyketide stereotriad. © 2014 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The selective catalytic oxidation of alcohols over a mixture of copper(l) chloride and a number of linear 'linker-less' or 'branched' poly(ethylene glycol)-supported nitroxyl radicals of the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) family as a catalyst system has been investigated in the presence of molecular oxygen in a batch reactor. It is found that the activity profile of the polymer-supported nitroxyl radicals is in good agreement with that of low-molecular weight nitroxyl catalysts, for example, allylic and benzylic alcohols are oxidised faster than aliphatic alcohols. The oxidations can be tuned to be highly selective such that aldehydes are the only oxidation products observed in the oxidation of primary alcohols and the oxidations of secondary alcohols yield the corresponding ketones. A strong structural effect of the polymeric nitroxyl species on catalytic activity that is dependent upon their spatial orientation of the nitroxyl radicals is particularly noted. The new soluble macromolecular catalysts can be recovered readily from the reaction mixture by solvent precipitation and filtration. In addition, the recycled catalysts demonstrate a similar selectivity with only a small decrease in activity compared to the fresh catalyst even after five repetitive cycles. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. The syntheses and characterizations of several complexes containing ferrocenylethynyl and ferrocene-1,1'-bis(ethynyl) groups attached to M(PP)Cp'[M = Fe, Ru, PP = dppe, Cp'= Cp*; M = Ru, Os, PP = (PPh3)(2), dppe, Cp' = Cp] are described. Reactions with tetracyanoethene have given either tetracyanobuta-1,3-dienyl or eta(3)-allylic derivatives, while addition of Me+ afforded the corresponding vinylidene derivatives. Some electrochemical measurements are discussed in terms of electronic communication between the redox-active M(PP)Cp' groups through the ferrocene nucleus. The molecular structures of 14 of these complexes have been determined by crystallographic methods.

This thesis work has been carried out during the Erasmus exchange period at the “Université Paris 6 – Pierre et Marie Curie”, in the “Edifices PolyMétalliques – EPOM” team, leaded by Prof. Anna Proust, belonging to the “Institut Parisien de Chimie Moléculaire”, under the supervision of Dr. Guillaume Izzet and Dr. Geoffroy Guillemot. The redox properties of functionalized Keggin and Dawson POMs have been exploited in photochemical, catalytic and reactivity tests. For the photochemical purposes, the selected POMs have been functionalized with different photoactive FGs, and the resulting products have been characterized by CV analyses, luminescence tests and UV-Vis analyses. In future, these materials will be tested for hydrogen photoproduction and polymerization of photoactive films. For the catalytic purposes, POMs have been firstly functionalized with silanol moieties, to obtain original coordination sites, and then post-functionalized with TMs such as V, Ti and Zr in their highest oxidation states. In this way, the catalytic properties of TMs were coupled to the redox properties of POM frameworks. The redox behavior of some of these hybrids has been studied by spectro-electrochemical and EPR methods. Catalytic epoxidation tests have been carried out on allylic alcohols and n-olefins, employing different catalysts and variable amounts of them. The performances of POM-V hybrids have been compared to those of VO(iPrO)3. Finally, reactivity of POM-VIII hybrids has been studied, using styrene oxide and ethyl-2-diazoacetate as substrates. All the obtained products have been analyzed via NMR techniques. Cyclovoltammetric analyses have been carried out in order to determine the redox behavior of selected hybrids.

The selective conversion of alcohols to their carbonyl derivatives is a critical step towards a sustainable chemical industry. Heterogeneous Pd catalysts represent some of the most active systems known, even so further studies into the active species and role of support are required. Through controlling support mesostructure, using non-interconnected SBA-15 and interlinked SBA-16 and KIT-6, we have evaluated the role of pore architecture on supported Pd nanoparticles and their subsequent activity for liquid phase aerobic allylic alcohol selective oxidation.[1,2] These synthesised silica supports exhibit high surface areas (>800 m2g-1), and similar mesopore diameters (3.5 to 5 nm), but differ in their pore connectivity and arrangement; p6mm (SBA-15), I3mm (SBA-16) and I3ad (KIT-6). When evaluated alongside commercial non-mesoporous silica (200 m2 g-1) they promote enhanced Pd dispersion with interpenetrating assemblies providing further elevation. Macropore introduction into SBA-15, producing a hierarchical macro-mesoporous silica (MM-SBA-15), allows control over mesopore length and accessibility which escalates Pd distribution to levels akin to KIT-6 and SBA-16. Controlling dispersion, and likewise nanoparticle size, is thus facilitated through the choice of support and additionally Pd loading, with cluster sizes spanning 3.2 to 0.8 nm. X-ray spectroscopies indicate nanoparticles are PdO terminated with the oxide content a function of dispersion. Kinetic studies allude to surface PdO being the active site responsible, with a constant TOF observed, independent of loading and support. This confirms activity is governed by PdO density, whilst also overruling internal mass diffusion constraints. MM-SBA-15 facilitates superior activity and TOFs for long chain acyclic terpene alcohols due to reduced internal mass transport constraints.

The aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of alcohols represents an environmentally benign and atom efficient chemical valorisation route to commercially important allylic aldehydes, such as crotonaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde, which find application in pesticides, fragrances and food additives. Palladium nanoparticles are highly active and selective heterogeneous catalysts for such oxidative dehydrogenations, permitting the use of air (or dioxygen) as a green oxidant in place of stoichiometric chromate permanganate saltsor H2O2. Here we discuss how time-resolved, in-situ X-ray spectroscopies (XAS and XPS) reveal dynamic restructuring of dispersed Pd nanoparticles and Pd single-crystals in response to changing reaction environments, and thereby identify surface PdO as the active species responsible for palladium catalysed crotyl alcohol selox (Figure 1); on-stream reduction to palladium metal under oxygen-poor regimes thus appears the primary cause of catalyst deactivation. This insight has guided the subsequent application of surfactant-templating and inorganic nanocrystal methodologies to optimize the density of desired active PdO sites for the selective oxidation of natural products such as sesquiterpenoids.

The influence of silica mesostructure upon the Pd-catalyzed selective oxidation of allylic alcohols has been investigated for amorphous and surfactant-templated SBA-15, SBA-16, and KIT-6 silicas. Significant rate enhancements can be achieved via mesopore introduction, most notably through the use of interconnected porous silica frameworks, reflecting both improved mass transport and increased palladium dispersion; catalytic activity decreases in the order Pd/KIT-6 ≈ Pd/SBA-16 > Pd/SBA-15 > Pd/SiO2. Evidence is presented that highly dispersed palladium oxide nanoparticles, not zerovalent palladium, are the catalytically active species. © 2011 American Chemical Society.
