The described studies were carried out in the eastern part of the sea during the end of the summer seasonal succession from September 1 to October 12, 1997. Concentration of chlorophyll a in the surface layer varied from 0.09 to 1.24 mg/m**3; it tended to increase in the southern regions (<74°N). Primary production in the water column (P_p) varied from 24 to 214 mg C/m**2/day and was on average 91 mg C/m**2/day. The low level of P_p seems to result from combination of physical and chemical environmental factors unfavorable for photosynthesis (e.g. deficiency of nutrients and low values of insolation and temperature) and intensive grazing of phytoplankton by zooplankton. The lower boundary of the photosynthetic layer in open waters was located at depth 60-75 m; irradiance there was 0.1-0.5% of incident irradiance. In deep-water regions (>200 m) the subsurface maximum of chlorophyll occurred in the layer at 20-40 m; usually this maximum resulted in formation of additional maxima of primary production.

Current understanding of rare earth element (REE) geochemistry in the ocean is given in the book. Chemical properties determining REE migration ability in natural processes, sources of REE in the ocean, behavior of REE in river-sea mixing zones, fractionation of dissolved and particulate REE in ocean waters under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, distribution of REE in terrigenous, authigenic, hydrothermal and biogenic sediment components (clay, bone detritus, barite, phillipsite, Fe- and Mn-oxyhydroxides, Fe-Ca hydroxophosphate, diatoms and foraminiferas) are under consideration.

A study was performed from August 11 to September 3, 1998 in the Pechora Sea, which covered the shallow-water southeastern Barents Sea. Chlorophyll a concentration in the surface layer (C_chls) ranged from 0.08 to 1.15 mg/m**3, while primary production in the water column (C_phs) Varied from 17 to 170 mg C/m**2/day, aver. 75 mg C/m**2/day. Transition from central deep-water (60-190 m) parts of the sea to coastal shallow-water (15-30 m) parts was accompanied by increase of average C_chls values 2.4 times (from 0.21 to 0.51 mg/m**3) and decrease in average C_phs 1.6 times (from 95 to 58 mg C/m**2/day); the latter, in turn, resulted from decrease in thickness of the photosynthetic layer (H_ph) from 55 to 12 m and its relative transparency (H) from 17 to 4 m. This sharp change in H value and absence of a positive feedback between C_chls and C_phs were most probably related to rapid increase in the role of yellow substance and suspended matter in absorption of solar radiation in coastal waters. In sea areas with depths greater than 30 m a deep chlorophyll maximum was observed; at most of stations it located in the 20-35 m deep layer during illumination in photosynthetic active radiation range comprising 0.8-1.5% of its surface value. Parameters of photosynthetic light curves in these regions indicate participation of shade-adapted flora in formation of the deep chlorophyll maximum. In coastal waters characterized by a relatively uniform chlorophyll distribution over the water column no light adaptation of phytoplankton to efficient utilization of low irradiation for photosynthesis was encountered. Thus, a conclusion was made that combination of extremely low values of C_phs and H_ph makes the pelagic ecosystem of the Pechora Sea coastal regions very sensitive to anthropogenic impacts that may increase water turbidity.

Contents of Fe, Mn, Al, P, and rare earth elements (REE) in ferruginous nodules and host sediments of the eastern Barents Sea were studied. A direct Fe-P correlation in reactive components of the sediments and nodules was found. The nodules were shown to be formed through Fe(II) oxidation in the surface layer of sediments and cementation of terrigenous fraction of sediments by Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. The latter accumulate phosphorus due to processes of sorption - co-precipitation, by forming Fe(III) hydrophosphates. REE composition in the sediments and nodules normalized to NASC contents is characterized by increased proportion of light REE that may be caused by regional features of their sources. Due to significant share of terrigenous matter in the Fe nodules (up to 65% for Nd), REE composition of bulk samples is similar to that of host sediments. A negative cerium anomaly in composition of reactive REE may result from REE sorption from seawater. REE bulk composition of a ferruginous crust is closer to that of seawater than one of the ferruginous nodules from the sediments because of essentially lower content of diluent terrigenous matter.

In this monograph on the basis of materials obtained by the author and his colleagues in Arctic expeditions of 1991-2005 and of published data results of studies effect of aerosols on environmental conditions and marine sedimentation in the Arctic are summarizes. Processes of aeolian transport and transformation of sedimentary material from sources to places of its accumulation in bottom sediments are described. Results of this study can be used to assess current state of ecosystem of Arctic seas and as a background for evaluation of possible human impact on nature during exploration of mineral resources of the Arctic shelf. For oceanographers, geochemists, geoecologists.
