THE YOUTH MOVEMENT NASHI (OURS) WAS FOUNDED IN THE SPRING of 2005 against the backdrop of Ukraine’s ‘Orange Revolution’. Its aim was to stabilise Russias political system and take back the streets from opposition demonstrators. Personally loyal to Putin and taking its ideological orientation from Surkov’s concept of ‘sovereign democracy’, Nashi has sought to turn the tide on ‘defeatism’ and develop Russian youth into a patriotic new elite that ‘believes in the future of Russia (p. 15). Combining a wealth of empirical detail and the application of insights from discourse theory, Ivo Mijnssen analyses the organisation’s development between 2005 and 2012. His analysis focuses on three key moments—the organisation’s foundation, the apogee of its mobilisation around the Bronze Soldier dispute with Estonia, and the 2010 Seliger youth campto help understand Nashi’s organisation, purpose and ideational outlook as well as the limitations and challenges it faces. As such,the book is insightful both for those with an interest in post-Soviet Russian youth culture, and for scholars seeking a rounded understanding of the Kremlin’s initiatives to return a sense of identity and purpose to Russian national life.The first chapter, ‘Background and Context’, outlines the conceptual toolkit provided by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe to help make sense of developments on the terrain of identity politics. In their terms, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia has experienced acute dislocation of its identity. With the tangible loss of great power status, Russian realities have become unfixed from a discourse enabling national life to be constructed, albeit inherently contingently, as meaningful. The lack of a Gramscian hegemonic discourse to provide a unifying national idea was securitised as an existential threat demanding special measures. Accordingly, the identification of those who are ‘notUs’ has been a recurrent theme of Nashi’s discourse and activity. With the victory in World War II held up as a foundational moment, a constitutive other is found in the notion of ‘unusual fascists’. This notion includes not just neo-Nazis, but reflects a chain of equivalence that expands to include a range of perceived enemies of Putin’s consolidation project such as oligarchs and pro-Western liberals.The empirical background is provided by the second chapter, ‘Russias Youth, the Orange Revolution, and Nashi’, which traces the emergence of Nashi amid the climate of political instability of 2004 and 2005. A particularly note-worthy aspect of Mijnssen’s work is the inclusion of citations from his interviews with Nashicommissars; the youth movement’s cadres. Although relatively few in number, such insider conversations provide insight into the ethos of Nashi’s organisation and the outlook of those who have pledged their involvement. Besides the discussion of Nashi’s manifesto, the reader thus gains insight into the motivations of some participants and behind-the-scenes details of Nashi’s activities in response to the perceived threat of anti-government protests. The third chapter, ‘Nashi’s Bronze Soldier’, charts Nashi’s role in elevating the removal of a World War II monument from downtown Tallinn into an international dispute over the interpretation of history. The events subsequent to this securitisation of memory are charted in detail, concluding that Nashi’s activities were ultimately unsuccessful as their demands received little official support.The fourth chapter, ‘Seliger: The Foundry of Modernisation’, presents a distinctive feature of Mijnssen’s study, namely his ethnographic account as a participant observer in the Youth International Forum at Seliger. In the early years of the camp (2005–2007), Russian participants received extensive training, including master classes in ‘methods of forestalling mass unrest’ (p. 131), and the camp served to foster a sense of group identity and purpose among activists. After 2009 the event was no longer officially run as a Nashi camp, and its role became that of a forum for the exchange of ideas about innovation, although camp spirit remained a central feature. In 2010 the camp welcomed international attendees for the first time. As one of about 700 international participants in that year the author provides a fascinating account based on fieldwork diaries.Despite the polemical nature of the topic, Mijnssen’s analysis remains even-handed, exemplified in his balanced assessment of the Seliger experience. While he details the frustrations and disappointments of the international participants with regard to the unaccustomed strict camp discipline, organisational and communication failures, and the controlled format of many discussions,he does not neglect to note the camps successes in generating a gratifying collective dynamic between the participants, even among the international attendees who spent only a week there.In addition to the useful bibliography, the book is back-ended by two appendices, which provide the reader with important Russian-language primary source materials. The first is Nashi’s ‘Unusual Fascism’ (Neobyknovennyi fashizm) brochure, and the second is the booklet entitled ‘Some Uncomfortable Questions to the Russian Authorities’ (Neskol’ko neudobnykh voprosov rossiiskoivlasti) which was provided to the Seliger 2010 instructors to guide them in responding to probing questions from foreign participants. Given that these are not readily publicly available even now, they constitute a useful resource from the historical perspective.

元素化学计量学指从化学计量学的角度出发,通过分析比较生命物质不同结构层次(分子、细胞、器官、机体、种群、群落等)或生态系统中元素的相对比值,来研究各层次相互之间以及生态学过程中元素之间的关系。生态化学计量学研究可以把生态实体的各个层次存元素水平上统一起来,足近年来新兴的一个生态学研究领域,广泛应用于生态学研究中。C,N,P生物地球化学循环中的重要元素,在生态系统中占有重要地位,许多环境问题都与它们有关,由此这三种元素的化学计量学受到生态学家们的普遍关注。C:N:P学计量学在水生生态系统中研究较为深入,目前已发展到染色体水平,而在陆地生态系统中的研究较为匮乏近年来由于人类活动的强烈影响,这三种元素的循环在速度和规模上都发生了前所未有的改变,导致一系列环境问题的出现,因此C:N:P学计量学在陆地生态系统中的研究就显得尤为重要。作为地球生命存在基础的绿色植物,在地球上已有数亿年的演化历史,研究陆地植物的元素化学计量学不仅有助于深入了解植物存在于地球上的内在机制,而且可以为许多环境问题的解决提供理论依据。本文首先建立中国不同地区植物氮磷含量数据库,通过数据分析找出一般规律,并进一步揭示植物不同进化阶段N:P学计量比的变化规律。在此基础上,通过在内蒙古羊草草原设立不同施肥样地来模拟自然界不同氮磷环境,从试验水平上研究不同施肥处理及施肥梯度下生态系统中氮、磷、有机质的变化规律,并从化学计量学角度研究其内在机制。 利州新建成的中国维管植物数据库(包含1603种植物)研究了不同进化水平以及不同功能群(生活型)间植物N:P的变化规律,并沿胡焕庸线(胡线)把中团分为为东西两部分,从总体水平上对比了东、西部间叫植物氮磷含量以及N:P异同。结果表明:l)从演化水平来看,尽管氮磷含量表现出极大的差异,除豆科植物外,植物N:P本保持稳定水平;2)木本植物与草本植物的N:P差异.显著,木本植物之间(常绿乔木,常绿灌木,落叶乔木,落叶灌木)N:P具有显著差异;3)中国东西部植物养分含量和N:P表现出极显著差异,东部的养分含量低于西部,而N:P著高于西部。 在内蒙古羊草草原两块永久实验样地(样地A1980年围封样地和样地B1999年田封样地)进行了为期两年的N素和P添加试验。氮素添加梯度为0,5,15,30,50,80 g NHN03.m.2.yr-1。P添加梯度为0,2,4,8,16,and 32 g P2Osm-2 yr-1(仪分析了羊草器官的结果)。分别从植物器官、物种、功能群水平研究了N素添加对N:P学计量学的影响,此外还研究了土壤和凋落物C:N:P学计量学对N素添加的响应。结合生物量的变化趋势,探讨了元素化学计量学对养分状况的指示作用。 1.羊草器官对施肥的响应结果表明,添加N素可以显著提高羊草器官中的含N量,p可以显著提高器官中的含P:除2001年样地A的根茎外,根茎中的含P基本不受N素添加的影响;茎中的含P同样表现出不受N素添加影响的趋势(2000年B茎除外):N素添加可以显著增大羊草叶片中的含P(B2000年叶片除外)。P添加对羊草器官的含N量没有影响;羊草器官中的氮磷含量施肥处理下表现出显著的正相关关系(N素添加下B叶片除外)。N素添加对羊草器官的N:P没有显著影响(A茎2000年和B叶片2000年除外):P添加显著降低了羊草器官中的N:P。 2.四种优势植物(羊草、羽茅、针茅和苔草)地上生物量和N:P学计量学对氮肥的响应研究发现,四个物种的氮磷含量均具有极显著相关关系;氮肥可以显著提高样地A的羽茅生物量,降低苔草的生物量,而使样地B的羊草生物量增大;两块样地中,四个物种的氮磷含量及N:P均随N素水平的增高而增大(样地A的羽茅N:P除外)。 3.基于生活型划分的功能群(多年生根茎禾草,多年生丛生禾草,豆科植物,多年生杂类草,一二年生植物,灌木和半灌木)对N素添加的响应研究表明:施N可以提高样地A的多年生丛生禾草的生物量,而使样地B的多年生根苇禾草增加;多年生杂类草的相对多度在两个样地中均随施氨水平的增加而显著 降低:在样地B,施氮可以显著提高不同功能群的氮磷含量;在样地A,功能群N、P量对施肥的响应并没有一致的变化规律,添加N素可以显著提高不同功能群的含N量(豆科植物除外),多年生根茎禾草和多年生杂类草的P量有显著增大的趋势(P < 0.005),而其它功能群(豆科植物、灌木和小半灌木、多年生杂类草和~二年生杂类草)的P量基本恒定(P>0.05);在样地A,多年生丛生禾草,多年生杂类草,一二年生植物,灌木和半灌木的N:P随施氨水平的增加而显著增大,多年生根茎禾草和豆科植物的N:P基本不变;在样地B,多年生丛生禾草的N:P随施氨水平的增加而显著增大,多年生根茎禾草、多年生杂类草和…二年生杂类草不受施氨水平的影响。 4.添加N素对根实验结果表明:两块样地中,上层根(0-10 cm)的生物量仅在施N后第一年显著增加,而下层根(10-20 cm)的地下生物量在两年的施N处理下均不受施肥梯度的影响i在样地A,施肥后第一年对根的N、P量影响不显著,施肥后第二年可以显著增大上层根的N、P量;在样地B,添加N素后第一年可以显著增大根的含P; 在两个样地中,两年的N肥处理对根的N:P没有显著影响:在施氨处理中,根的N、P量及N:P在施肥第一年的响应要高于第二年。 5.所有处理中,上层土壤(O-lO cm)养分含量(有机碳,全氮,全磷)均高于下层土壤(10-20 cm);在样地A,氮素添加对r十壤有机碳没有显著性作用,在施肥第一年可以显著增加上层土壤的N、P量,而在施肥后第二年对土壤N、P量没有显著影响;在样地B,添加N素对两年的土壤养分均没有显著影响:养分添加两个样地土壤中的元素比值(C:N比,C:P,N:P)没有显著影响;土壤养分对施N一年后的响应要高于第二年。 6.养分添加对凋落物化学特征及化学计量学特征的影响研究结果表明:凋落物现存量不受施肥的影响;2001年凋落物现存量与2000年和2001年的地上生物量相关关系不显著;添加N素可以显著提高凋落物的N含量,而对有机碳含量和P量没有显著影响;凋落物C:N比随施肥梯度的增大而显著降低,N:P显著增高,而C:P没有明显变化。 以上研究结果表明,不同植物功能群的N:P存在差异,人类活动强烈影响自然植被中的植物N:P;但植物的N:P不受植物进化的影响(豆科植物除外);由于植物已有数亿年的演化历史,同时N与P植物的结构和功能上具有密切的联系,在生物地球化学循环中办存在耦合作用。因此植物N:P值恒定可能是一普适性规律。 N素添加试验表明,在植物根、地上器官、物种和功能群水平上N与P呈显著正相关关系,反映了植物体内的氮磷含量具有协同作用。共存种对N肥的响应不同,表明物种受不同元素的制约。因此除非把生态系统中所有物种对施肥的响应刻画清楚,笼统的认定生态系统缺乏某种元素是不适当的。 施肥试验表明,两种围封时间样地的主要限制性元素不同。极度退化(样地B)植物生长主要缺N,而在保护较好样地(样地A),P逐步成为一种限制因素。反映了随着保护时间的增加,植物生长逐渐由N限制型向N、P同限制型过渡。添加的养分要么被植物吸收,挥发到大气中,或以凋落物的形式返还到土壤表层。但是对养分的预算有待于进一步研究。土壤中的养分含量对N素添加有…个滞后效应,而植物响应较为迅速。功能群N:P在施肥实验中不能保持恒定,可能是由于实验时间较短的缘故;化学计量学的研究表明羊草草原分解凋落物的微生物受P的制约,可能是由于植物体内具有高的P再转运机制。这一结论有待于进一步的验证。氮肥降低了凋落物的C:N比,因此凋落物的分解速率可能将要发生改变。这需要进一步开展C循环的研究。

Enzymatic cis-dihydroxylation of benzo[b]thiophene, benzo[b]furan and several methyl substituted derivatives was found to occur in both the carbocyclic and heterocyclic rings. Relative and absolute configurations and enantiopurities of the resulting dihydrodiols were determined. Hydrogenation of the alkene bond in carbocyclic cis-dihydrodiols and ring-opening epimerization/reduction reactions of heterocyclic cis/trans-dihydrodiols were also studied. The relatively stable heterocyclic dihydrodiols of benzo[b]thiophene and benzo[b]furan showed a strong preference for the trans configuration in aqueous solutions. The 2,3-dihydrodiol metabolite of benzo[b]thiophene was utilized as a precursor in the chemoenzymatic synthesis of the unstable arene oxide, benzo[b]thiophene 2,3-oxide.

BRCA1 mediates resistance to apoptosis in response to DNA-damaging agents, causing BRCA1 wild-type tumours to be significantly more resistant to DNA damage than their mutant counterparts. In this study, we demonstrate that following treatment with the DNA-damaging agents, etoposide or camptothecin, BRCA1 is required for the activation of nuclear factor-?B (NF-?B), and that BRCA1 and NF-?B cooperate to regulate the expression of the NF-?B antiapoptotic targets BCL2 and XIAP. We show that BRCA1 and the NF-?B subunit p65/RelA associate constitutively, whereas the p50 NF-?B subunit associates with BRCA1 only upon DNA damage treatment. Consistent with this BRCA1 and p65 are present constitutively on the promoters of BCL2 and XIAP, whereas p50 is recruited to these promoters only in damage treated cells. Importantly, we demonstrate that the recruitment of p50 onto the promoters of BCL2 and XIAP is dependent upon BRCA1, but independent of its NF-?B partner subunit p65. The functional relevance of NF-?B activation by BRCA1 in response to etoposide and camptothecin is demonstrated by the significantly reduced survival of BRCA1 wild-type cells upon NF-?B inhibition. This study identifies a novel BRCA1-p50 complex, and demonstrates for the first time that NF-?B is required for BRCA1-mediated resistance to DNA damage. It reveals a functional interdependence between BRCA1 and NF-?B, further elucidating the role played by NF-?B in mediating cellular resistance of BRCA1 wild-type tumours to DNA-damaging agents.

Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) have been extensively studied and their effects associated with the local bleeding observed in human accidents by viper snakes. Representatives of P-I and P-III classes of SVMPs similarly hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins or coagulation factors while only P-III SVMPs induce significant hemorrhage in experimental models. In this work, the effects of P-I and P-III SVMPs on plasma proteins and cultures of muscle and endothelial cells were compared in order to enlighten the mechanisms involved in venom-induced hemorrhage. To reach this comparison, BnP1 was isolated from B. neuwiedi venom and used as a weakly hemorrhagic P-I SVMPs and jararhagin was used as a model of potently hemorrhagic P-III SVMP. BnP1 was isolated by size exclusion and anion-exchange chromatographies, showing apparent molecular mass of approximately 24kDa and sequence similarity with other members of SVMPs, which allowed its classification as a group P-I SVMP. The comparison of local effects induced by SVMPs showed that BnP1 was devoid of significant myotoxic and hemorrhagic activities and jararhagin presented only hemorrhagic activity. BnP1 and jararhagin were able to hydrolyze fibrinogen and fibrin, although the latter displayed higher activity in both systems. Using HUVEC primary cultures, we observed that BnP1 induced cell detachment and a decrease in the number of viable endothelial cells in levels comparable to those observed by treatment with jararhagin. Moreover, both BnP1 and jararhagin induced apoptosis in HUVECs while only a small increase in LDH supernatant levels was observed after treatment with jararhagin, suggesting that the major mechanism involved in endothelial cell death is apoptosis. Jararhagin and BnP1 induced little effects on C2C12 muscle cell cultures, characterized by a partial detachment 24h after treatment and a mild necrotic effect as evidenced by a small increase in the supernatants LDH levels. Taken together, our data show that P-I and P-III SVMPs presented comparable effects except for the hemorrhagic activity, suggesting that hydrolysis of coagulation factors or damage to endothelial cells are not sufficient for induction of local bleeding. The Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae specimens showed a karyotype consisting of 2n = 50 chromosomes with 12 metacentrics, 36 submetacentrics and two subtelocentrics. In addition to the basic karyotype, all the males specimens have cells ranging from zero to two B microchromosomes in mitotic metaphases. These chromosomes were not observed in the female specimens. C-band analysis showed a distribution pattern of characteristic heterochromatin with interstitial and centromeric blocks. However, the B chromosomes were faintly stained with C-banding and were not fluorescent with CMA(3) staining. The meiotic studies showed the formation of bivalents in metaphase I and in pachytene under an optical microscope. Through synaptonemal complex analysis with an electron microscope, the pachytene showed 25 bivalents completely paired and a small bivalent corresponding to the B chromosomes. In the same preparation, one of the B chromosomes was observed in a univalent form. on the basis of pairing behavior and morphology it is assumed that B chromosomes of M. sanctaefilomenae show homology between them and their evolutionary aspects are discussed.

In this work we make some contributions to the theory of actions of abelian p-groups on the n-Torus T-n. Set congruent to Z(pk1)(h1) x Z(pk2)(h2) x...x Z(pkr)(hr), r >= 1, k(1) >= k(2) >=...>= k(r) >= 1, p prime. Suppose that the group H acts freely on T-n and the induced representation on pi(1)(T-n) congruent to Z(n) is faithful and has first Betti number b. We show that the numbers n, p, b, k(i) and h(i) (i = 1,..,r) satisfy some relation. In particular, when H congruent to Z(p)(h), the minimum value of n is phi(p) + b when b >= 1. Also when H congruent to Z(pk1) x Z(p) the minimum value of n is phi(p(k1)) + p - 1 + b for b >= 1. Here phi denotes the Euler function.

This study investigated the effects of electrolytic treatment using Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA, 70%TiO2/30%RuO2) type electrodes in simulated wastewater containing aromatic amine n-phenyl-n'-1,3-dimethylbutyl-p-phenylenediamine (Flexzone 7P). A low direct current density of 0.025 A cm(-2) was applied for periods up to 60 minutes and a 52.6% decrease in Flexzone 7P concentration was observed. Ultraviolet-visible spectra, gas chromatography, toxicity and biodegradation tests were carried out with the aim of verifying the toxic by-products that were formed. Ultraviolet-visible spectra of simulated wastewater exhibited changes in the aromatic amine's molecular structure. Additionally, based on the S. cerevisiae toxicity test, it was observed that detoxification of the wastewater occurred after 15 minutes of electrolysis. It was also observed that five minutes of treatment were sufficient to improve the biodegradation rate, determined through the respirometric Bartha method.

Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) participate in a number of important biological, physiological and pathophysiological processes and are primarily responsible for the local tissue damage characteristic of viperid snake envenomations. The use of medicinal plant extracts as antidotes against animal venoms is an old practice, especially against snake envenomations. Such plants are sources of many pharmacologically active compounds and have been shown to antagonize the effects of some venoms and toxins. The present study explores the activity of triacontyl p-coumarate (PCT), an active compound isolated from root bark of Bombacopsis glabra vegetal extract (Bg), against harmful effects of Bothropoides pauloensis snake venom and isolated toxins (SVMPs or phospholipase A2). Before inhibition assays, Bg or PCT was incubated with venom or toxins at ratios of 1:1 and 1:5 (w/w; venom or isolated toxins/PCT) for 30 min at 37 °C. Treatment conditions were also assayed to simulate snakebite with PCT inoculated at either the same venom or toxin site. PCT neutralized fibrinogenolytic activity and plasmatic fibrinogen depletion induced by B. pauloensis venom or isolated toxin. PCT also efficiently inhibited the hemorrhagic (3MDH-minimum hemorrhagic dose injected i.d into mice) and myotoxic activities induced by Jararhagin, a metalloproteinase from B. jararaca at 1:5 ratio (toxin: inhibitor, w/w) when it was previously incubated with PCT and injected into mice or when PCT was administered after toxin injection. Docking simulations using data on a metalloproteinase (Neuwiedase) structure suggest that the binding between the protein and the inhibitor occurs mainly in the active site region causing blockade of the enzymatic reaction by displacement of catalytic water. Steric hindrance may also play a role in the mechanism since the PCT hydrophobic tail was found to interact with the loop associated with substrate anchorage. Thus, PCT may provide a alternative to complement ophidian envenomation treatments. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
