Independent replication and meta-analysis for endometriosis risk loci

Endometriosis is a complex disease that affects 6-10% of women in their reproductive years and 20-50% of women with infertility. Genome-wide and candidate-gene association studies for endometriosis have identified 10 independent risk loci, and of these, nine (rs7521902, rs13394619, rs4141819, rs6542095, rs1519761, rs7739264, rs12700667, rs1537377, and rs10859871) are polymorphic in European populations. Here we investigate the replication of nine SNP loci in 998 laparoscopically and histologically confirmed endometriosis cases and 783 disease-free controls from Belgium. SNPs rs7521902, rs13394619, and rs6542095 show nominally significant (p <.05) associations with endometriosis, while the directions of effect for seven SNPs are consistent with the original reports. Association of rs6542095 at the IL1A locus with 'All' (p =.066) and 'Grade-B' (p =.01) endometriosis is noteworthy because this is the first successful replication in an independent population. Meta-analysis with the published results yields genome-wide significant evidence for rs7521902, rs13394619, rs6542095, rs12700667, rs7739264, and rs1537377. Notably, three coding variants in GREB1 (near rs13394619) and CDKN2B-AS1 (near rs1537377) also showed nominally significant associations with endometriosis. Overall, this study provides important replication in a uniquely characterized independent population, and indicates that the majority of the original genome-wide association findings are not due to chance alone. © The Author(s) 2015.

Protonic conductivity of (NH4) 4Fe(CN)6·1.5H2O by complex admittance method

The protonic conductivity of ammonium ferrocyanide hydrate has been studied by the complex admittance method. The admittance plots show departures from ideal Debye behaviour. The values of ionic conductivity (sigma = 3.7 X 10(-5) (OMEGA-cm)-1) and diffusion coefficient (D = 3.8 X 10(-10) cm2/s) obtained at room temperature are consistent with the corresponding values estimated by an earlier NMR study.

Primary structure of sesbania mosaic virus coat protein: its implications to the assembly and architecture of the virus

Sesbania mosaic virus (SMV) is a plant virus that infects Sesbania grandiflora plants in Andhra Pradesh, India. The amino acid sequence of the coat protein of SMV was determined using purified peptides generated by cleavage with trypsin, chymotrypsin, V8 protease and clostripain. The 230 residues so far determined were compared to the corresponding residues of southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV), the type member of sobemoviruses. The overall identity between the sequences is 61.7%. The amino terminal 64 residues, which constitute an independent domain (R-domain) known to interact with RNA, are conserved to a lower extent (52.5%). Comparison of the positively charged residues in this domain suggests that the RNA-protein interactions are considerably weaker in SMV. The residues that constitute the major domain of the coat protein, the surface domain (S-domain, residues 65-260), are better conserved (66.5%). The positively charged residues of this domain that face the nucleic acid are well conserved. The longest conserved stretch of residues (131-142) corresponds to the loop involved in intersubunit interactions between subunits related by the quasi 3-fold symmetry. A unique cation binding site located on the quasi 3-fold axis contributes to the stability of SMV. These differences are reflected in the increased stability of the SMV coat protein and its ability to be reconstituted with RNA at pH 7.5. A major epitope was identified using monoclonal antibodies to SMV in the segment 201-223 which contains an exposed helix in the capsid structure. This region is highly conserved between SMV and SBMV (70%) suggesting that it could represent the site of an important function such as vector recognition.

Timing and broad-band spectroscopy of 1A 1118-61 with Suzaku

We present a timing and broad-band pulse-phase-resolved spectral analysis of the transient Be X-ray binary pulsar 1A 1118-61 observed during its outburst in 2009 January using Suzaku observations. The Suzaku observations were made twice, once at the peak of the outburst, and the other 13 d later at its declining phase. Pulse profiles from both observations exhibit strong energy dependence with several peaks at low energies and a single peak above similar to 10 keV. A weak, narrow peak is detected at the main dip of the pulse profiles from both observations in the energy bands below 3 keV, indicating the presence of a phase-dependent soft excess in the source continuum. The broad-band energy spectrum of the pulsar could be fitted well with a partial covering cut-off power-law model and a narrow iron fluorescence line. We also detect a broad cyclotron feature at similar to 50 keV from both observations which is a feature common for accretion-powered pulsars with high magnetic field strength. The pulse-phase-resolved spectral analysis shows an increase in the absorption column density of the partial covering component, as well as variation in the covering fraction at the dips of the pulse profiles, which naturally explains energy dependence of the same. The cyclotron line parameters also show significant variation with pulse phase with an similar to 10 keV variation in the cyclotron line energy and a variation in depth by a factor of 3. This can be explained either as the effect of different viewing angles of the dipole field at different pulse phases, or due to a more complex underlying magnetic field geometry.

No Plenário da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC), discussão de emendas populares que tratam dos direitos e da aposentadoria dos trabalhadores e da reforma urbana. O representante da Arquidiocese do Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Roberto Castro, defende uma emenda em favor do usucapião nas favelas cariocas, após cinco anos, e em terrenos urbanos abandonados, após dois anos. Adib Jorge, representante sindical, defende emenda popular que prevê aposentadoria mais justa aos trabalhadores. O Deputado Farabulini Júnior (PTB-SP) defende a paridade dos salários entre os trabalhadores da ativa e os aposentados e pensionistas. Em nome da CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores), o Deputado Paulo Paim (PT-RS) fala em defesa da emenda popular dos direitos dos trabalhadores e declara que o eixo dessa emenda é a estabilidade no emprego, as quarenta horas semanais e o direito de greve. Na próxima Sessão Extraordinária serão discutidas emendas populares que tratam da estabilidade no emprego, participação nos lucros e democratização da administração das empresas, reforma urbana, transporte coletivo e moradia popular. O projeto de Constituição do Relator Bernardo Cabral permite o pluralismo sindical. O Deputado Juarez Antunes (PDT-RJ) considera que o pluralismo sindical só favorece a classe empresarial. Marival Campos, Presidente do Sindicato dos Petroleiros-BA, informa que é uma tentativa do patronato de dividir os trabalhadores cada vez mais. Luiz Machado, Presidente do Sindicato dos Urbanitários-RJ, afirma que será desenvolvido um trabalho junto aos parlamentares para que esse dispositivo não seja aprovado. O Deputado Mario Lima (PMDB-BA) informa que só deve haver um sindicato de cada categoria em cada base territorial. O Deputado Afif Domingos (PL-SP) considera que nada impede a coexistência de mais de um sindicato dentro da mesma base, contanto que apenas um seja o representante nos dissídios da categoria perante a lei. O Deputado Paes Landim (PFL-PI) afirma que tanto faz a unicidade ou pluralismo, desde que os sindicatos tenham liberdade e possam atuar livres da interferência do Estado. O Deputado Augusto Carvalho (PCB-DF) declara que só se os trabalhadores se unirem em um único sindicato terão força suficiente para poder enfrentar o patronato.
