A great deal has been written on the part which birds play in the dispersal of freshwater fauna. This article summarises literature on the dispersal of aquatic animals by birds and aquatic insects.

Determination of the activity of nitrifying bacteria in surface waters by a modified BOD-test. [Translation from: Zentbl.Bakt.Parasitkde 156(1) 414-421, 1972. ]

A modified method of the Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)test was applied in order to find out the seasonal changing activity of the nitrifying bacteria in surface waters. Samples were taken from the River Elbe near Teufelsbrueck.

There is no doubt that determination of the biomass of zooplankton (primarily of crustaceans) will be taken into consideration in practice and limnological works, especially after the recent publication of fairly comprehensive tables of weights of a whole range of species of freshwater copepods and cladocerans. The usefulness of applying formulae of determining the biomass of marine crustaceans for freshwater copepods is discussed.

Permanent draft genomes of four new coccolithoviruses: EhV-18, EhV-145, EhV-156 and EhV-164

Coccolithoviruses infect the marine coccolithophorid microalga Emiliania huxleyi. Here, we describe the genomes of four new coccolithoviruses isolated from UK coastal locations. Of particular interest, EhV-18 and EhV-145 encode serine palmitoyltransferase function via two distinct genes, whereas all other coccolithoviruses have SPT as a gene fusion of LCB1/LCB2 domains.

Growing Tall but Unequal: New Findings and New Background Evidence on Anthropometric Welfare in 156 Countries, 1810–1989

This is the first initiative to collate the entire body of anthropometric evidence during the 19th and 20th centuries, on a global scale. By providing a comprehensive dataset on global height developments we are able to emphasize an alternative view of the history of human well-being and a basis for understanding characteristics of well-being in 156 countries, 1810–1989.
