Effect of Passive Fit Absence in the Prosthesis/Implant/Retaining Screw System: A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis

The misfit between prostheses and implants is a clinical reality, but the level that can be accepted without causing mechanical or biologic problem is not well defined. This study investigates the effect of different levels of unilateral angular misfit prostheses in the prosthesis/implant/retaining screw system and in the surrounding bone using finite element analysis. Four models of a two-dimensional finite element were constructed: group I (control), prosthesis that fit the implant; groups 2 to 4, prostheses with unilateral angular misfit of 50, 100, and 200 mu m, respectively. A load of 133 N was applied with a 30-degree angulation and off-axis at 2 mm from the long axis of the implant at the opposite direction of misfit on the models. Taking into account the increase of the angular misfit, the stress maps showed a gradual increase of prosthesis stress and uniform stress in the implant and trabecular bone. Concerning the displacement, an inclination of the system due to loading and misfit was observed. The decrease of the unilateral contact between prosthesis and implant leads to the displacement of the entire system, and distribution and magnitude alterations of the stress also occurred.

A new application of humic substances: Activation of supports for invertase immobilization

Invertase was immobilized on aminopropyl silica (APTS-SiO2) activated with humic substances (APTS-SiO2-HS) and on aminopropyl silica activated with glutaraldehyde (APTS-SiO2-GA). The resulting activity of both systems was compared. Humic substances (HS) used for the activation of the silica were extracted from soil of Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil, according to the procedure recommended by the International Humic Substances Society. Activity was determined by measuring the rate of formation of reduced sugars using the reaction with dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS). The amount of HS bound on the APTS-SiO2 was equal to 50 mg. The maximum amount of invertase immobilized on APTS-SiO2-HS was 15200 U/g while in the system APTS-SiO2-GA it was 13400 U/g. The experimental enzymatic activity was 3700 and 3300 U/g, for the systems APTS-SiO2-HS and APTS-SiO2-GA, respectively. Considering the increased amount and activity of immobilized enzyme compared with the glutaraldehyde method, it was concluded that this technique opens a new perspective in the preparation of supports for enzyme immobilization employing humic substances. © Springer-Verlag 2000.

A Pt(II) complex with both a phenanthroline and a tetrathiafulvalene-extended dithiolate ligand: Synthesis, crystal structure, electrochemical and spectroscopic properties

The reaction of 4,5-bis(2'-cyanoethylsulfanyl)-4',5'-dipropylthiotetrathiafulvalene with Pt(phen)Cl-2 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with CsOH as base in CH3OH-THE affords the target complex I in 44% yield. This complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, M = 790.01, a = 12.1732(12), b = 15.851(2), c = 14.5371(16) angstrom, beta = 107.693(12)degrees, V = 2672.4(5) angstrom(3) and Z = 4. It undergoes two reversible single-electron oxidation and two irreversible reduction processes. An intense electronic absorption band at 15200 cm(-1) (658 nm) in CH2Cl2 is assigned to the intramolecular mixed metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) from a tetrathiafulvalene-extended dithiolate-based HOMO to a phenanthroline-based LUMO. This band shifts hypsochromically with increasing solvent polarity. Systematic changes in the optical spectra upon oxidation allow precise tuning of the oxidation states of 1 and reversible control over its optical properties. Irradiation of 1 at 15625 cm(-1) (640 nm) in glassy solution below 150K results in emission from the (LLCT)-L-3 excited state. GRAPHICS (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Paradoxical Deterioration During Anti-Tuberculous Therapy in Non-HIV-Infected Patients with Pleural Tuberculosis: A Pragmatic Approach

We report a case of paradoxical deterioration. A male patient diagnosed with pleural tuberculosis, but who was not infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), experienced clinical deterioration 3 weeks after the initiation of anti-tuberculous treatment. After other diagnoses were ruled out, a paradoxical response to treatment was established and the patient was started on systemic corticosteroids. Paradoxical response to treatment should be considered in patients with clinical deterioration after they start on anti-tuberculous treatment.

O Emprego Operacional das Unidades de Reconhecimento Blindado na Guerra de África (1961-1975)

Com esta investigação pretende-se avaliar se as missões, a organização, os sistemas de armas, a instrução ou o treino das Unidades de reconhecimento, originalmente vocacionadas para atuar em operações convencionais, se constituíram como fatores limitadores do seu emprego na Guerra de África. Na realização desta investigação foi feito um estudo pormenorizado dos fatores em cima referidos. Quanto às missões, organização, instrução e treino foi realizado um estudo comparativo entre aquilo que existia, e que era praticado, com aquilo que foi executado e utilizado na guerra de África. Este estudo pretendia perceber as diferenças que existiram, e se estas foram de facto uma influência limitadora ao emprego destas unidades. Quanto aos sistemas de armas, foram analisados aqueles que foram empregues em África, pretendendo-se assim perceber quais é que foram as restrições destes sistemas. Para a realização desta investigação utilizamos o procedimento histórico e comparativo para realizarmos à comparação entre aquilo que existia e o que se executou no terreno, nos fatores missões, organização e instrução e treino. Na análise dos sistemas de armas utilizámos o procedimento histórico para a enumeração dos sistemas empregues e suas limitações. No final do estudo de cada fator deduzimos mediante os dados que foram sendo apresentados, se estes foram limitadores ao emprego destas unidades. Na recolha de dados utilizámos a pesquisa documental para a consulta de Quadros Orgânicos (QO), relatórios das unidades, relatórios das regiões militares, bem como manuais doutrinários das unidades de reconhecimento blindado. Utilizámos também a pesquisa bibliográfica para a consulta de teses sobre o reconhecimento blindado, artigos da Revista da Cavalaria, resenhas das campanhas de África, bem como livros alusivos à subversão e às campanhas de África. No final deste trabalho verificámos que os sistemas de armas foram a maior limitação destas unidades, pelo simples facto de terem influenciado todos os outros fatores em análise. Contudo vemos que as razões desta influência sobre os outros fatores poderiam verificar-se em qualquer tipo de conflito, visto serem derivadas dos problemas de sustentação das viaturas. Realmente existiram pequenas limitações em todos os fatores de análise neste conflito, em relação ao convencional, sendo que nos parece que foram contornadas com dedicação, e capacidade de improvisação das forças Portuguesas, para as ultrapassar.
