ABSTRACT The current research proposes that the landscape construction -its invention- is the essential element for the overall understanding of Miguel Fisac's work. So, he rebels against the thought -attributed to the Modern Movement representatives-, who despise the "social, human, and physical" landscape He uses three aspects to develop his own life journey, which leaves and returns to La Mancha: Memory, Learning and Experimentation. The Memory is a journey inside his childhood, when he was very much in contact with nature; and later, his captivation by the essence of the popular architecture, that one which is "made by people, and by time". The Learning is the process which it has the capacity to move his referential axis relating his own conception of architecture and how it must dialogue with the landscape: journeys around the world, intellectual meetings with the best masters in Modernity and the discovery of other cultures, becoming real in the traditional Japanese house and La Alhambra. And the Experimentation, where these mentioned concepts are concreted through a kind of grammar, with which the architect is able to activate the landscape, modify, or reinterpret it. All of this is reaffirmed in some paradigmatic examples of his best architecture: the Occupational Institute of Daimiel (1950-1953), the Teacher Training Center of the Madrid's University City (1952-1957); and the way between the "Arcas Reales" Apostolic College in Valladolid and the Dominican Theologate in Alcobendas (1951-1955). Architectures that show how the Learning, screened through Memory, promotes that the landscape resonate in them, becoming new body the soul of the past. These examples substantiate a map which allows, from the landscape as a tool of analysis, a cross-reading of the work of this master-architect from Daimiel , and we can sense his career as a unique project.

ABSTRACT The thesis will analyze the architectural background and context of those works which can be framed within the concept of Bigness. From the utopian, megastructuralism and radical movements of the sixties, it will lead to contemporary concepts, projects and theories, and ultimately define a theory of Bigness. It will be necessary to define Bigness or the Large, not only in terms of size, but also considering change in spatial and conceptual dimensions. Its case studies are architectures which, surpassing a certain volume, magnitude or degree of complexity, become a ‘large building’ and acquire characteristics of another nature. This generates a change or ‘leap’ in scale, or a displacement in fields, breaking the conventional limits of scale, size and other codes used to categorise projects within ‘architecture’ or the ‘city’. The main body of the thesis is structured into two sections, Genealogies and Associations and Displacement of Concepts, and the Conclusion, which will compile the considerations and conclusions extracted from the previous parts, building the actual theory of Bigness. The first section, Genealogies and Associations, will review the forms of knowledge which contextualize the Large, covering a spectrum of social, economic and political structures from the framework and perspective of their direct influence on architecture. It will account theories, thesis and projects which reflect or work on Bigness and on the limits between scales from the sixties to today, examining those concepts and conditions which may be useful to unfold new settings and paradigms. As the sociocultural context will also prove crucial in order to later define concepts, a broad sweep will cover from the mass society to the information society, revising the influence and repercussions of technology and globalization on the development of architecture. Lastly, it will study concepts in-between space and politics, by means of a study framing positions of support, assistance or rejection towards the work of architecture, and the political nature the work is given only due to its condition of being Big. The following section, Displacement of Concepts, provides conditions and examples which allow the definition of the ‘characteristics’ of Bigness by means of a theoretical and analytical investigation of the tools and strategies which operate on these scales. This is in order to confirm how apparently quantitative developments can lead to qualitative advances or to mutations that enable the overcoming of previous paradigms. The objective is to define the set of strategies, operations and tools, which synthesize the values of each concept; the grounding for a “cosmogony” of the subject, underpinned by relevant reference texts, paradigmatic projects and concepts stemming from the analyses. The concepts of study arise directly from certain attributes and characteristics detected in Bigness. For this purpose, it is that architecture whose dimensions and size have experienced what we will define as a ‘change of dimensions’, not only of size, but also perceptual, technical and contextual;its size depends not only on its magnitude but also the amount of material that contains or flows through system; which possesses traits, faculties and features of an infrastructure; which is installed, and is therefore reactive with its surroundings; due to this, it will be autonomous with respect to the whole and yet related to it; a space which can accept the undetermined nature of some of its parts as well as the specificity of other parts, acknowledging the loss of total control and detail; and thus, which has displaced planning and design with operational strategies. In conclusion, an architecture that displaces or mutates concepts, attributes and strategies stemming from other disciplines, from the jumps between scales, and from the new programs.

Swordtail fish (Poeciliidae: genus Xiphophorus) are a paradigmatic case of sexual selection by sensory exploitation. Female preference for males with a conspicuous “sword” ornament is ancestral, suggesting that male morphology has evolved in response to a preexisting bias. The perceptual mechanisms underlying female mate choice have not been identified, complicating efforts to understand the selection pressures acting on ornament design. We consider two alternative models of receiver behavior, each consistent with previous results. Females could respond either to specific characteristics of the sword or to more general cues, such as the apparent size of potential mates. We showed female swordtails a series of computer-altered video sequences depicting a courting male. Footage of an intact male was preferred strongly to otherwise identical sequences in which portions of the sword had been deleted selectively, but a disembodied courting sword was less attractive than an intact male. There was no difference between responses to an isolated sword and to a swordless male of comparable length, or between an isolated sword and a homogenous background. Female preference for a sworded male was abolished by enlarging the image of a swordless male to compensate for the reduction in length caused by removing the ornament. This pattern of results is consistent with mate choice being mediated by a general preference for large males rather than by specific characters. Similar processes may account for the evolution of exaggerated traits in other systems.

A basic evolutionary problem posed by the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma game is to understand when the paradigmatic cooperative strategy Tit-for-Tat can invade a population of pure defectors. Deterministically, this is impossible. We consider the role of demographic stochasticity by embedding the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma into a population dynamic framework. Tit-for-Tat can invade a population of defectors when their dynamics exhibit short episodes of high population densities with subsequent crashes and long low density periods with strong genetic drift. Such dynamics tend to have reddened power spectra and temporal distributions of population size that are asymmetric and skewed toward low densities. The results indicate that ecological dynamics are important for evolutionary shifts between adaptive peaks.

Thrombin is an allosteric enzyme existing in two forms, slow and fast, that differ widely in their specificities toward synthetic and natural amide substrates. The two forms are significantly populated in vivo, and the allosteric equilibrium can be affected by the binding of effectors and natural substrates. The fast form is procoagulant because it cleaves fibrinogen with higher specificity; the slow form is anticoagulant because it cleaves protein C with higher specificity. Binding of thrombomodulin inhibits cleavage of fibrinogen by the fast form and promotes cleavage of protein C by the slow form. The allosteric properties of thrombin, which has targeted two distinct conformational states toward its two fundamental and competing roles in hemostasis, are paradigmatic of a molecular strategy that is likely to be exploited by other proteases in the blood coagulation cascade.

Tourism is the main economic activity in many towns in the province of Alicante in southeast Spain and has turned this area into a paradigmatic example of mass tourism on the Mediterranean coast. Since the 1960s, the province's coastal towns have opted for a development model centred on what is known as 'residential tourism' or 'second-home tourism', with few exceptions, such as Benidorm. We wish to put forward the argument that the main social agents in the tourism sector have not perceived the 'search for authenticity' as a factor that may attract tourists to this area. To this end, we will start by reviewing critically the theoretical discourse about the role played by authenticity in the motivation of tourists. Then we will discuss some of the results obtained from empirical, qualitative research that included 37 in-depth interviews. As a guide for our empirical research, we use a model based on the stakeholder theory. The epistemological difficulties faced by researchers do not justify certain critical arguments that try to highlight the impossibility of operationalising essential concepts and approaches such as that of authenticity. Therefore, it is necessary that empirical research continues to delve into the sociological keys that determine the 'search for authenticity' in the tourists' experience.

A method to calculate the effective spin Hamiltonian for a transition metal impurity in a non-magnetic insulating host is presented and applied to the paradigmatic case of Fe in MgO. In the first step we calculate the electronic structure employing standard density functional theory (DFT), based on generalized gradient approximation (GGA), using plane waves as a basis set. The corresponding basis of atomic-like maximally localized Wannier functions is derived and used to represent the DFT Hamiltonian, resulting in a tight-binding model for the atomic orbitals of the magnetic impurity. The third step is to solve, by exact numerical diagonalization, the N electron problem in the open shell of the magnetic atom, including both effects of spin–orbit and Coulomb repulsion. Finally, the low energy sector of this multi-electron Hamiltonian is mapped into effective spin models that, in addition to the spin matrices S, can also include the orbital angular momentum L when appropriate. We successfully apply the method to Fe in MgO, considering both the undistorted and Jahn–Teller (JT) distorted cases. Implications for the influence of Fe impurities on the performance of magnetic tunnel junctions based on MgO are discussed.

In this paper we explore the implications of pluralist curricula for architectural technology. This includes the potential effects on strengthening the identity of the architectural technology profession and the academic development of the discipline. This latter relies, arguably, on research being explicit in CIAT’s eight mandatory threshold standards. This work concentrates on one of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologist’s (CIATS’s) key subjects; 'design', defined as detail design for the architectural technologist. In postulating a philosophy of architectural technology epistemology with a focus on detail design, the pedagogy of architectural detailing in practice and academia is investigated: the associated roles of creativity and conditioning are explored. The interrelationship between conceptual design and construction processes in practice is outlined, identifying the role of the detail design specialist (architectural technologist) in the management of design and production information. Thus is identified the future architectural technologists’ specialisation of nuclear architecture: the total quality construction created by quality of thinking which permeates from and to detail design for assembly/disassembly and production within a collaboratively mechanised AEC team. A theory of nuclear architecture and an associated approach to detail design pedagogy are postulated, aiming to promote a revised perception of the definition of design for the architectural technologist. How this theory can be applied to the creation of a paradigmatic student project, themed on designing for disassembly as a key future focus of ‘Healthy Building’ design is introduced for future exploration. This future research into detail design, the authors propose, should be predicated on the appropriate methodology related to the epistemology of a design-based area of the architectural technology discipline. The roles of Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRB) in the evaluation and subsequent dissemination of this detail design pedagogy, with the aim of strengthening the architectural technology discipline are emphasised.

Why does the European Union (EU) join international human rights treaties? This paper develops motivational profiles pertaining either to a ‘logic of appropriateness’ or a ‘logic of consequentialism’ in order to answer this question. It compares the EU’s motivations for its recent accession to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) with those dominating the EU’s nonaccession to the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention). Based on this cross-case analysis, I argue that the EU’s accession decisions are best viewed as cost-benefit calculations and explained by the strength of opposition and the desire to spread its norms. The EU is only marginally concerned with efforts to construct an ‘appropriate role’, although its accession considerations are positively influenced by (varying degrees) of an internalized commitment to human rights. The paper aims at deepening the understanding of the EU’s motivations in the paradigmatic hard case of accession to international human rights treaties not least to evaluate the EU’s ‘exceptional nature’, facilitate its predictability for stake-holders and contribute to political and ethical debates surrounding future rites of passage as a global actor.
