LEAD DISTRIBUTION AND ISOTOPE SIGNATURE IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF GUAMA RIVER AND GUAJARA BAY (BELEM - PARA). Lead analyses in bottom sediments from the hydrographic system of Belem (Para) indicated low contents of this metal for the sediments from the Guama river, with no significant anthropogenic contribution. A concentration of 18.1 +/- 1.5 mg kg(-1) and Pb-206/Pb-207 isotopic signature of 1.196 +/- 0.002 are assigned for Pb from natural sources. On the other hand, the significant increase of Pb contents in the sediments from the Guajara bay, together with the decrease of Pb-206/Pb-207 ratios (1.172 < Pb-206/Pb-207 < 1.188) point to an anthropogenic lead contribution, originated by the industrial and urban activities of the city of Belem.

The development of an electroanalytical method for simultaneous determination of copper and lead ions in sugar cane spirit (cachaca) using carbon paste electrode modified with ascorbic acid and carbon nanotubes (CPE-AaCNT) is described. Squarewave voltammetry (SWV) with anodic stripping was employed, and this technique was optimized with respect to the following parameters: frequency (50 Hz), amplitude (100 mV) and scan increment (9 mV). The analytical curves were linear in the range from 0.0900 to 7.00 mg L-1 for lead and copper. The limits of detection were 48.5 and 23.9 mu g L-1 for lead and copper, respectively. The developed method was applied to the simultaneous determination of copper and lead in five commercial samples of sugar cane spirit. The results were in good agreement with those obtained by F AAS/GF AAS (flame atomic absorption spectrometry/graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry) and showed that CPE-AaCNT can be successfully employed in the simultaneous determination of these metals in real sugar cane spirit samples.

In this paper, we discuss the effects of catalyst load with respect to carbon powder for several Pt and Pb-based catalysts, using formic acid as a model molecule. The discussion is based on electrochemical tests, a complete morphological investigation and theoretical calculations. We show that the Pt and Pb-based catalysts presented activity in formic acid oxidation at very low catalyst loads (e.g., 0.5% in respect to the carbon content). Physical characterisations demonstrate that the electrodes are composed of separated phases of Pt and lead distributed in Pt nanometric-sized islands that are heterogeneously dispersed on the carbon support and Pb ultra-small particles homogeneously distributed throughout the entire carbon surface, as demonstrated by the microscopy studies. At high catalyst loads, very large clusters of Pb(x)O(y) could be observed. Electrochemical tests indicated an increase in the apparent resistance of the system (by a factor of 19.7 Omega) when the catalyst load was increased. The effect of lead in the materials was also studied by theoretical calculations (OFT). The main conclusion is that the presence of Pb atoms in the catalyst can improve the adsorption of formic acid in the catalytic system compared with a pure Pt-based catalyst. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The neutron-rich lead isotopes, up to Pb-216, have been studied for the first time, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. The observed isomeric states exhibit electromagnetic transition strengths which deviate from state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. It is shown that their complete description demands the introduction of effective three-body interactions and two-body transition operators in the conventional neutron valence space beyond Pb-208.

Estuarine systems play an important role in the retention of toxic trace elements owing to the affinity of these elements with particles dissolved in water. This work presents the use of a voltammetric sensor to monitor heavy metal (Zn (II), Cd(II) and Pb (II)) concentrations in the Cananeia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon region (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). Lower concentrations were found in the Southern estuarine system (Cananeia City) and increased concentrations observed in the Northern sector (Iguape City) were promoted by anthropogenic activities, with particular influence from the historical introduction of mining wastes and inputs from agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents. The proposed method is reliable, inexpensive and fast, can simultaneously provide information on the concentration of these metallic ions and can be easily used for field measurements aboard oceanographic ships.

An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance Au electrode modified with a Se thin film was used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of lead ad-atoms using underpotential deposition (UPD) conditions. A specific quasi-reversible process was observed during the reduction of Pb2+ on Se thin films in perchloric acid media. The charge density of Pb ad-atoms on Se thin film (46.86 mu C cm(-2)) suggests a recovery of 0.1 monolayers, which is in good agreement with EQCM data. The Se thin film can be successfully alloyed with Pb atoms that are deposited by chronoamperometry using time intervals large enough to allow for diffusion toward the inner Se phase. Linear sweep voltammetry combined with EQCM in perchloric acid was used to characterize the amount of Pb absorbed in the Se thin film. These findings offer a new strategy for alloy formation in semiconductor films using UPD as an effective tool to quantify the exact amount of the incorporated metal.

Different lead sources were identified in a large uranium tailings deposit (5Mton) in the Central Region of Portugal using lead isotopic ratios obtained by ICP-QMS. These ratios helped to clarify the different sources of Pb within the tailings deposit and the impact of the tailings on the surroundings. Ten depth profiles were used for isotopic characterization of the tailings deposit; the lead background signature was evaluated in seven regional rocks (granites) and was defined as being 28 +/- 1 mg kg(-1) for Pb bulk concentration and with isotopic ratios of 1.264(2) for Pb-206/Pb-207 and 1.962(7) for Pb-208/Pb-206. In order to understand Pb isotope distribution within the tailings deposit, simple mixing/mass balance models were used to fit experimental data, involving: (1) the background component; (2) uranium ores (pitchblende) characterized by the ratios Pb-206/Pb-207 of 1.914(3) and Pb-208/Pb-206 of 1.235(2); and (3) an unknown Pb source (named 'Fonte 5') characterized by the ratios Pb-206/Pb-207 of 3.079(7) and Pb-208/Pb-206 of 0.715(1). This unknown source showed high radiogenic ratios found in the water of some tailings depth profiles located in a very specific position in the dump. In terms of isotopic characterization, 69% of the deposit material resulted from the background source, 25% from uranium minerals and only 6% from other uranium mines in the region. Finally, the environment impact revealed that the pollution was focused only in the beginning of the stream and not in the surroundings, nor in the groundwater system. The lead in the water was found only in colloidal form with a clear pitchblende signature. Those data revealed possible remobilization phenomena along the bedside and margins of the watercourse.

The influence of chloride on the electrodeposition of lead films and their dissolution in anodic stripping voltammetric experiments was examined. Gold substrates were plated with lead films, and mass changes were monitored by using the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation factor (EQCM-D). The results showed that the amount of electrodeposited lead is slightly dependent on the chloride concentration. The charge/mass ratio data indicated the presence of Pb(I) and Pb(II) as a result of film dissolution, and the precipitation and deposition of PbCl2 onto the electrode surface. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the morphology of the lead film was strongly influenced by chloride present in the plating solution and that much rougher films were obtained in comparison with those obtained in the absence of chloride. The rate of the anodic dissolution was higher for lead films with higher surface areas, which lead to an increase in their stripping voltammetric currents. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Several types of alumina were synthesized from sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) by precipitation with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and subsequently calcination at 500 degrees C to obtain gamma-Al2O3. The precursor aluminate was derived from aluminum scrap. The various gamma-Al2O3 synthesized were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), adsorption-desorption of N-2 (S-BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD revealed that distinct phases of Al2O3 were formed during thermal treatment. Moreover, it was observed that conditions of synthesis (pH, aging time and temperature) strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the alumina. A high-surface-area alumina (371 m(2) g(-1)) was synthesized under mild conditions, from inexpensive raw materials. These aluminas were tested for the adsorption of Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution at toxic metal concentrations, and isotherms were determined. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Chemical abrasion was carried out on zircons grains of the Temora II standard for U-Pb dating prior to analyses using in situ Laser Ablation-MultiCollector Ion Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICPMS) followed by the Isotope Dissolution Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer (ID-TIMS) method. The proposed methodology was herein applied in order to reduce primarily the effects of secondary Pb loss, the presence of common lead and/or silicate impurities. Nine Temora II zircon grains were analyzed by the laser ablation method yielding an age of 418.3±4.3 Ma. Zircon grains of a same population were separated for chemical abrasion before dissolution and mass spectrometry analyses. Six fractions of them were separated for isotope dissolution using 235U-205Pb mixed spike after we have checked and assured the laboratory conditions of low blank values for total Pb of less than 2 pg/g. The obtained U-Pb zircon age by the ID-TIMS method was 415.7±1.8 Ma (error 0.43 %) based on four successful determinations. The results are consistent with the published ages for the Temora diorite (Temora I â 416.75±1.3 Ma; Temora II â 416.78±0.33 Ma) and established as 416±0.33 Ma. The technique is thus recommended for high precision U-Pb zircon analyses (error < 1 %), mainly for high resolution stratigraphic studies of Phanerozoic sequences.

Lead-based multiferroics perovskites with nominal compositions Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 and Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O3 were synthesized following a two-stage method. Magnetic proprieties were investigated and correlated to anelastic proprieties, measured by the conventional pulse-echo method. The discussions are focused in the region around 250 K, where magnetoelectroelastic instabilities have been observed. X-ray absorption nearedge structure (XANES) study further indicates that the edge position varies with temperature revealing a fluctuation on the valence of iron ions with the temperature, which can be related to a variation in anelastic and magnetic proprieties.

The interactions between outdoor bronzes and the environment, which lead to bronze corrosion, require a better understanding in order to design effective conservation strategies in the Cultural Heritage field. In the present work, investigations on real patinas of the outdoor monument to Vittorio Bottego (Parma, Italy) and laboratory studies on accelerated corrosion testing of inhibited (by silane-based films, with and without ceria nanoparticles) and non-inhibited quaternary bronzes are reported and discussed. In particular, a wet&dry ageing method was used both for testing the efficiency of the inhibitor and for patinating bronze coupons before applying the inhibitor. A wide range of spectroscopic techniques has been used, for characterizing the core metal (SEM+EDS, XRF, AAS), the corroded surfaces (SEM+EDS, portable XRF, micro-Raman, ATR-IR, Py-GC-MS) and the ageing solutions (AAS). The main conclusions were: 1. The investigations on the Bottego monument confirmed the differentiation of the corrosion products as a function of the exposure geometry, already observed in previous works, further highlighting the need to take into account the different surface features when selecting conservation procedures such as the application of inhibitors (i.e. the relative Sn enrichment in unsheltered areas requires inhibitors which effectively interact not only with Cu but also with Sn). 2. The ageing (pre-patination) cycle on coupons was able to reproduce the relative Sn enrichment that actually happens in real patinated surfaces, making the bronze specimens representative of the real support for bronze inhibitors. 3. The non-toxic silane-based inhibitors display a good protective efficiency towards pre-patinated surfaces, differently from other widely used inhibitors such as benzotriazole (BTA) and its derivatives. 4. The 3-mercapto-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (PropS-SH) additivated with CeO2 nanoparticles generally offered a better corrosion protection than PropS-SH.

Die Hypersilylgruppe (Me3Si)3Si stellt einen sehr sperrigen, Elektronen liefernden Substituenten dar und kann zur Stabilisierung niedriger Oxidationsstufen sowie ungewöhnlicher Strukturelemente dienen. Durch Reaktionen der base-freien Hypersilanide der Alkalimetalle sowie des Dihypersilylplumbandiyls mit unterschiedlichsten phosphorhaltigen Reagenzien konnten eine Reihe hypersilyl-stabilisierter Phosphor- und Bleicluster-Verbindungen erhalten werden. Kaliumhypersilanid reagiert in Toluol glatt mit weißem Phosphor bei Raumtemperatur in Toluol unter quantitativer Bildung von rotem Kalium-bis(hypersilyl)tetraphosphenid [(Me3Si)3Si]2P4K2 (1), einem Kaliumsalz des Tetraphosphens (Me3Si)3Si-PH-P=P-PH-Si(SiMe3)3. In Benzol oder Toluol steht 1 im Gleichgewicht mit dem dimeren Octaphosphanid [(Me3Si)3Si]4P8K4 (2). Bei längerem Stehen der toluolischen Lösungen zerfällt 1 langsam vermutlich in Folge einer Protolyse zum gelben Pentaphosphanid [(Me3Si)3Si]3P5K2 (4). Aus benzolischer Lösung konnte hingegen ein weiteres Oktaphosphanid, [(Me3Si)3Si]3P8K3 (5), isoliert werden. Führt man die Reaktion Kaliumhypersilanid mit P4 in stärker koordinierenden Lösungsmitteln wie Diethylether durch, so entstehen neben 1 größere Mengen des Triphosphenids [(Me3Si)3Si]2P3K (3); dieses enthält ein Triphosphaallyl-Anion mit partieller P-P-Doppelbindung. Setzt man Lithiumhypersilanid mit weißem Phosphor um, so beobachtet man eine vollständig andere Produktpallette. Als Hauptprodukte lassen Polyphosphane wie beispielsweise [(Me3Si)3Si]2P4 (6) nachweisen, das zu 1 analoge [(Me3Si)3Si]2P4Li2 (7) entsteht nur in vergleichsweise kleinen Mengen. In der Gegenwart von Hexahydro-1,3,5-trimethyl-S-triazin, entsteht aus Lithiumhypersilanid und P4 hingegen im wesentlichen [(Me3Si)3Si]2P3Li (8) neben beträchtlichen Mengen von (Me3Si)4Si. Dessen Bildung erfordert eine Si-Si-Bindungsspaltung im Verlauf der Reaktion. Die Reaktion von Natriumhypersilanid mit P4 verläuft sehr unübersichtlich, das Pentaphosphanid [(Me3Si)3Si]3P5Na2 (9) ist das einzige isolierbare Produkt. Setzt man 1 mit [(Me3Si)2Si]2Sn um, so bilden sich überraschenderweise, je nach verwendetem Solvens [(Me3Si)3Si]3P4SnK (10) oder [(Me3Si)3Si]2[(Me3Si)2N]P4SnK (11). Alle neuen Verbindungen wurden NMR-spektroskopisch charakterisiert, die Phosphenide 1, 7, 8 sowie die Phosphanide 2, 4, 5, 9, 10 darüber hinaus durch Kristallstrukturanalysen. Dihypersilylplumbandiyl und -stannandiyl reagieren bei tiefer Temperatur mit P4, MPH2 (M=Li, K), PMe3, and PH3 zu formalen Lewis-Säure-Base-Addukten. Die Addukte {[(Me3Si)3Si]2PbPH2}M [M = Li (15), K (18)], {{[(Me3Si)3Si]2Pb}2PH2}M [M = Li (19), K (20)], und [(Me3Si)3Si]2EPMe3 [E = Pb (21), Sn (22)] wurden als kristalline Feststoffe erhalten und konnten vollständig charakterisiert werden. Die metastabilen Addukte {[(Me3Si)3Si]2E}4P4 (E = Pb, Sn) und [(Me3Si)3Si]2PbPH3 konnten lediglich NMR-spektroskopisch nachgewiesen werden. Bei Raumtemperatur entstehen in Folge von Ligandenaustausch-Prozessen die kristallographisch charakterisierten Heterokubane [(Me3Si)3Si]4P4E4 [E = Pb (12), Sn (14)], das Diphosphen (Me3Si)3SiP=PSi(SiMe3)3 (13) sowie der Pb2P2-Heterocyclus [(Me3Si)3SiPbP(H)Si(SiMe3)3]2 (17). Bei tiefer Temperatur wird aus einer sehr langsamen Reaktion von Dihypersilylplumbandiyl und PH3 in sehr kleinen Ausbeuten ein weiteres, völlig unerwartetes Produkt gebildet: der Bleicluster [(Me3Si)3Si]6Pb12 (23). Er weist ein verzerrt ikosaedrisches, zentrosymmetrisches Pb12-Gerüst auf. Nach jetzigen Erkenntnissen läuft seine Bildung über das nicht fassbare Hydridoplumbandiyl HPbSi(SiMe3)3, das intermediär durch Substituentenaustausch zwischen Pb[Si(SiMe3)3]2 and PH3 entsteht. Der Ersatz des Phosphans durch andere Hydridquellen wie (Ph3PCuH)6, (iBu)2AlH, and Me3NAlH3 führt ebenfalls zur Bildung von Bleiclustern, allerdings ist jetzt der Cluster [(Me3Si)3Si]6Pb10 (24) das Hauptprodukt. Beide Cluster, 23 und 24, gehorchen den Wade-Regeln.
