This paper reviews the concept of presence in immersive virtual environments, the sense of being there signalled by people acting and responding realistically to virtual situations and events. We argue that presence is a unique phenomenon that must be distinguished from the degree of engagement, involvement in the portrayed environment. We argue that there are three necessary conditions for presence: the (a) consistent low latency sensorimotor loop between sensory data and proprioception; (b) statistical plausibility: images must be statistically plausible in relation to the probability distribution of images over natural scenes. A constraint on this plausibility is the level of immersion;(c) behaviour-response correlations: Presence may be enhanced and maintained over time by appropriate correlations between the state and behaviour of participants and responses within the environment, correlations that show appropriate responses to the activity of the participants. We conclude with a discussion of methods for assessing whether presence occurs, and in particular recommend the approach of comparison with ground truth and give some examples of this.

BACKGROUND: Recent methodological advances allow better examination of speciation and extinction processes and patterns. A major open question is the origin of large discrepancies in species number between groups of the same age. Existing frameworks to model this diversity either focus on changes between lineages, neglecting global effects such as mass extinctions, or focus on changes over time which would affect all lineages. Yet it seems probable that both lineages differences and mass extinctions affect the same groups. RESULTS: Here we used simulations to test the performance of two widely used methods under complex scenarios of diversification. We report good performances, although with a tendency to over-predict events with increasing complexity of the scenario. CONCLUSION: Overall, we find that lineage shifts are better detected than mass extinctions. This work has significance to assess the methods currently used to estimate changes in diversification using phylogenetic trees. Our results also point toward the need to develop new models of diversification to expand our capabilities to analyse realistic and complex evolutionary scenarios.

Now when the technology fast developing it is very important to control the formation of materials with better properties. In the scientific literature there is a number of works describing the influence of magnetic field on the properties and process of formation of materials. The goal of this master's thesis is to analyze the process of electrochemical synthesis of niobium oxide in the present of magnetic field, to compare properties of formed oxide films and to estimate the influence of magnetic field on the process and on the result of synthesis.

Eosinophil and activated mast cell identification in the spleen combined with mast cell tryptase determination in postmortem serum may diagnose fatal anaphylaxis with a high degree of certainty. Mast cell tryptase measurement and significance in corpses with decompositional changes remains however an issue of controversy. Analogously, immunohistochemistry in corpses with decompositional changes may be influenced by several mechanisms, including protein alteration, antigen diffusion and unspecific antibody binding to disrupted protein structures. The authors present an autopsy case involving a 55-year-old woman who unintentionally received clarithromycin. Due to difficult in administrative procedures, the postmortem examination was performed 96 h after death. Mast cell tryptase was measured in postmortem serum from femoral, aortic and right heart blood. The obtained results were consistent with mast cell activation. Histochemistry (Pagoda Red) and immunohistochemistry (anti-tryptase antibodies) allowed splenic eosinophils and mast cells to be detected. Based on the results of all postmortem investigations, the hypothesis of anaphylaxis following accidental clarithromycin administration was formulated.

Treatment failure and symptomatic relapse are major concerns in American tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL). Such complications are seen frequently in Leishmania guyanensis infections, in which patients respond variously to first-line antileishmanials and are more prone to develop chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis. The factors underlying this pathology, however, are unknown. Recently, we reported that a double-stranded RNA virus, Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV1), nested within L. guyanensis parasites is able to exacerbate experimental murine leishmaniasis by inducing a hyperinflammatory response. This report investigates the prevalence of LRV1 in human L. guyanensis infection and its effect on treatment efficacy, as well as its correlation to symptomatic relapses after the completion of first-line treatment. In our cohort of 75 patients with a diagnosis of primary localized American TL, the prevalence of LRV1-positive L. guyanensis infection was elevated to 58%. All patients infected with LRV1-negative L. guyanensis were cured after 1 dose (22 of 31 [71%]) or 2 doses (31 of 31 [100%]) of pentamidine. In contrast, 12 of 44 LRV1-positive patients (27%) presented with persistent infection and symptomatic relapse that required extended therapy and the use of second-line drugs. Finally, LRV1 presence was associated with a significant increase in levels of intra-lesional inflammatory markers. In conclusion, LRV1 status in L. guyanensis infection is significantly predictive (P = .0009) of first-line treatment failure and symptomatic relapse and has the potential to guide therapeutic choices in American TL.

The authors report a case of umbilical venous catheter malposition with air in the portal venous system in a preterm neonate. Initially, the hypothesis of necrotizing enterocolitis was considered, but the newborn progressed with no finding of disease and the air disappeared at follow-up radiography. The differential diagnosis of such a finding can avoid unnecessary clinical treatments.

Improving educational quality is an important public policy goal. However, its success requires identifying factors associated with student achievement. At the core of these proposals lies the principle that increased public school quality can make school system more efficient, resulting in correspondingly stronger performance by students. Nevertheless, the public educational system is not devoid of competition which arises, among other factors, through the efficiency of management and the geographical location of schools. Moreover, families in Spain appear to choose a school on the grounds of location. In this environment, the objective of this paper is to analyze whether geographical space has an impact on the relationship between the level of technical quality of public schools (measured by the efficiency score) and the school demand index. To do this, an empirical application is performed on a sample of 1,695 public schools in the region of Catalonia (Spain). This application shows the effects of spatial autocorrelation on the estimation of the parameters and how these problems are addressed through spatial econometrics models. The results confirm that space has a moderating effect on the relationship between efficiency and school demand, although only in urban municipalities.

A method to generate carbonylic compounds from alkynes under mild and neutral conditions, with excellent functional group compatibility and high yields, is described. Hydration takes place under catalytic conditions by using from 0.1 to 0.2 equivalents of the easily available and inexpensive mercury(II) p-toluensulfonamidate in a hydroalcoholic solution. After use the catalyst is iner tized and/or recycled ...

Worldwide, the incidence of HIV-associated dementia has decreased However, the prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), mostly the milder forms, i.e. mild neurocognitve disorders (MND) and asymptomatic neurocognitive impairments (ANI) has increased in the combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) era. Indeed, 20% to 60% of well- treated HIV-infected patients, i.e. with undetectable HIV viremia, still present HAND in the cART era. HAND are characterized by psychomotor slowing, memory loss, and attention deficit. Possible explanations for this paradoxical phenomenon encompass: increased survival of HIV- infected patients thank to cART, low grade inflammation of the brain insufficient penetrance of antiretroviral drugs through the blood brain barrier (BBB), or on the contrary, toxic effect of some antiretroviral drugs. These somewhat contradictory hypotheses underline our poor understanding of HAND physiopathology. Here, we aim at determining whether the intrathecal synthesis of immunoglobulins G (IgG), hereafter referred as cerebrospinal fluid oligoclonal band (CSF OB), may help us in better understanding the immunopathogenesis of cognitive disorders. By analogy with other infection, such as syphilis or neuroborreliosis (9, 10), one can assume that, in the case of HIV-infected patients, the CSF OB are directed against HIV proteins (11). Nevertheless, in the case of HIV, the meaning of such CSF OB is unclear. Indeed, it is unknown whether this intrathecal inflammatory reaction is beneficial (viral control) or harmful (brain parenchyma destruction by the different inflammatory factors). Here, we looked at the association between CSF OB and cognitive disorders in HIV-infected patients, hypothesizing that if these CSF OB are protective, one should see an inverse correlation with the presence of cognitive disorders.

Since routine eubacterial 16S rRNA PCR does not amplify members of the Chlamydiales order, we tested all samples received in our laboratory during a 10 months period using a pan-Chlamydiales real-time PCR. 3 of 107 samples (2.8%) revealed to be positive, suggesting a role of some Chlamydiales in the pathogenesis of chronic bronchial stenosis or bronchial stenosis superinfection and as agents of orthopaedic prosthesis infections.

Virtual Reality environments that reproduce typical contexts associated with tobacco use may be useful for aiding smoking cessation. The main objective of this study was to assess the capacity of eight environments to produce the craving to smoke and determine the relation of craving to nicotine dependence and level of presence. The results show that all the environments were able to generate the desire to smoke; a direct relation was found between sense of presence and craving.

This paper describes the presence of the nearctic water boatman Trichocorixa verticalis verticalis in southern Portugal. This species has been cited recently for the first time in Europe from individuals captured in southern Spain. This species, native to Atlantic coast of America, has also been cited from New Caledonia and South Africa, and has been found in the open sea. Two kinds of introduction are reported for this species: involuntary introduction with exotic fish, and passive dispersion through marine currents and severe storms. The possibility of this kind of introduction in Europe is discussed

The model of Questions Answering (Q&A) for eLearning is based on collaborative learning through questions that are posed by students and their answers to that questions which are given by peers, in contrast with the classical model in which students ask questions to the teacher only. In this proposal we extend the Q&A model including the social presence concept and a quantitative measure of it is proposed; besides it is considered the evolution of the resulting Q&A social network after the inclusion of the social presence and taking into account the feedback on questions posed by students and answered by peers. The social network behaviorwas simulated using a Multi-Agent System to compare the proposed social presence model with the classical and the Q&A models
