We investigated the dynamics of spontaneous emission from a photonic crystal etched into a SiN slab. After fitting the decay curves of the emission to double exponential functions, we divided the dynamic process of the spontaneous emission into a fast process and a slow process. It was observed that the presence of the photonic crystal increased the proportion of the fast decay component, and consequently, the emission rate and time-integrated emission intensity were also enhanced. These enhancements were a result of the coupling of the guide modes to the leaky modes of the photonic crystal slab waveguide. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Spontaneous emission from GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in photonic crystals with a narrow photonic band gap is studied theoretically. The results show that the decay lifetime is very sensitive to the sizes of QDs, and both inhibited and accelerated emission can occur, which had been indicated in a previous experiment. The Weisskopf-Wigner approximation, good for atoms and molecules, may be incorrect for QDs. A damped Rabi oscillation of the excited state with the transition frequency outside the photonic band gap may appear, which is impossible for atoms and molecules. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The antibunching and blinking from a single CdSe/ZnS nanocrystal with an emission wavelength of 655 nm were investigated under different excitation powers. The decay process of the photoluminescence from nanocrystal was fitted into a stretched exponential, and the small lifetime and the small stretching exponent under a high excitation power were explained by using nonradiative multi-channel model. The probability of distributions for off-times from photoluminescence intermittence was fitted into the power law, and the power exponents were explained by using a tunneling model. For higher excitation power, the Auger-assisted tunneling model takes effect, where the tunneling rate increases and the observed lifetime decreases. For weak excitation power, the electron directly tunnels between the nanocrystal and trapping state without Auger assistance. The correlation between antibunching and blinking from the same nanocrystal was analyzed.

We employ photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL to study exciton localization effect in InGaN epilayers. By measuring the exciton decay time as a, function of the monitored emission energy at different temperatures, we have found unusual behaviour of the energy dependence in the PL decay process. At low temperature, the measured PL decay time increases with the emission energy. It decreases with the emission energy at 200K, and remains nearly constant at the intermediate temperature of 120K. We have studied the dot size effect on the radiative recombination time by calculating the temperature dependence of the exciton recombination lifetime in quantum dots, and have found that the observed behaviour can be well correlated to the exciton localization in quantum dots. This suggestion is further supported by steady state PL results.

The nonradiative recombination effect on carrier dynamics in GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells is studied by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and polarization-dependent TRPL at various excitation intensities. It is found that both recombination dynamics and spin relaxation dynamics strongly depend on the excitation intensity. Under moderate excitation intensities the PL decay curves exhibit unusual non-exponential behaviour. This result is well stimulated by a rate equation involving both the radiative and non-radiative recombinations via the introduction of a new parameter of the effective concentration of nonradiative recombination centres in the rate equation. In the spin dynamics study, the spin relaxation also shows strong excitation power dependence. Under the high excitation power an increase of spin polarization degree with time is observed. This new finding provides a useful hint that the spin process can be controlled by excitation power in GaInNAs systems.

The optical properties of two kinds of InGaN/GaN quantum-wells light emitting diodes, one of which was doped with Si in barriers while the other was not, are comparatively investigated using time-integrated photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence techniques. The results clearly demonstrate the coexistence of the band gap renormalization and phase-space filling effect in the structures with Si doped barriers. It is surprisingly found that photogenerated carriers in the intentionally undoped structures decay nonexponentially, whereas carriers in the Si doped ones exhibit a well exponential time evolution. A new model developed by O. Rubel, S. D. Baranovskii, K. Hantke, J. D. Heber, J. Koch, P. Thomas, J. M. Marshall, W. Stolz, and W. H. Ruhle [J. Optoelectron. Adv. Mater. 7, 115 (2005)] was used to simulate the decay curves of the photogenerated carriers in both structures, which enables us to determine the localization length of the photogenerated carriers in the structures. It is found that the Si doping in the barriers not only leads to remarkable many-body effects but also significantly affects the carrier recombination dynamics in InGaN/GaN layered heterostructures. The influence of nonradiative recombination on the photoluminescence (PL) decay dynamics in GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells is studied by time-resolved photoluminescence under various excitation intensities. It is found that the PL decay process strongly depends on the excitation intensity. In particular, under the moderate excitation levels the PL decay curves exhibit unusual nonexponential behavior and show a convex shape. By introducing a new parameter of the effective concentration of nonradiative recombination centers into a rate equation, the observed results are well simulated. The cw PL data further demonstrate the nonradiative recombination effect on the optical properties of GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Quaternary InAlGaN film has been grown directly on top of low-temperature-deposited GaN buffer layer by low-pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. High-resolution X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) results show that the film has good crystal quality and optical property. Temperature-dependent PL and time-resolved PL (TRPL) have been employed to study the carriers recombination dynamics in the film. The TRPL signals can be well fitted as a stretched exponential function exp[-(t/tau)(beta)] from 14 to 250 K, indicating that the emission is attributed to the radiative recombination of excitons localized in disorder quantum nanostructures such as quantum disks originating from indium (In) clusters or In composition fluctuation. The cross-sectional high-resolution electron microscopy measurement further proves that there exist the disorder quantum nanostructures in the quaternary. By investigating the dependence of the exponential parameter beta on the temperature, it is shown that the multiple trapping-detrapping mechanism dominates the diffusion among the localized states. The localized states are considered to have two-dimensional density of states (DOS) at 250 K, since radiative recombination lifetime tau(r) increases linearly with increasing temperature. Photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PI, were employed to study the steady and transient optical properties of cubic InxGa1-xN epilayers grown by MBE. The results suggest that the PL transitions in InGaN epilayers are mainly from localized exciton states. The localization energies are estimated to be 60 meV, independent of In composition. The PL decay is characterized by a hi-exponential dependence. The fast process (50 ps at 12K) is related to the fast relaxation of excitons, while a slower contribution (200-270 ps at 12K) is attributed to the decay process of localized excitons.

A thin oriented bacteriorhodopsin (bR) him is deposited on a stainless steel slide by use of the electrophoretic sedimentation method. A junction is made with electrolyte gels having a counterelectrode to construct a bR-based photoelectric detector;. The photoelectric response signal to a 10 ns laser pulse is measured. A theory on the photoelectric kinetics of bR is developed based on the concept of the charge displacement current and the bR photocycle rate equations. Comparison between the theoretical and experimental results proves that the bR photoelectric response to a short laser pulse is a multi-exponential process. The decay time constants and amplitudes of each, exponential component are obtained by data fitting.

A series of novel numerical methods for the exponential models of growth are proposed. Based on these methods, hybrid predictor-corrector methods are constructed. 189W activities were produced via the 192Os(n, α) reaction using irradiation of isotopically enriched 192Os metallic powder of ~100 mg/cm2 with 14 MeV neutrons. The X-γ and γ-γ coincidence measurements were made so as to obtain γ rays from 189W decay and its coincidence relations. A new simple decay scheme of 189W including three γ rays of 210.2, 229.6 and 260.2 keV is proposed. Two new levels of 189Re at 470.4 and 489.8 keV are assigned.
