O desenvolvimento deste trabalho teve como objectivo a optimização de um sistema de climatização industrial, constituído por quatro centrais de climatização adiabáticas, que apresentam limitações de capacidade de arrefecimento, controlo e eficiência. Inicialmente foi necessária a pesquisa bibliográfica e recolha de informação relativa à indústria têxtil e ao processo de arrefecimento evaporativo. Numa fase posterior foram recolhidos e analisados os diversos dados essenciais à compreensão do binómio edifício/sistema de climatização, para a obtenção de possíveis hipóteses de optimização. Da fase de recolha de informações e dados, destaca-se, também, a realização de análises à qualidade do ar interior (QAI). As optimizações seleccionadas como passíveis de implementação, foram estudadas e analisadas com o auxílio do software de simulação energética dinâmica DesignBuilder e os resultados obtidos foram devidamente trabalhados e ajustados de modo a permitir uma assimilação amigável e de fácil interpretação das suas vantagens e desvantagens, tendo ainda sido objecto de estudo de viabilidade económica. A optimização proposta reflecte uma melhoria substancial das condições interiores ao nível da temperatura e humidade relativa, resultando, ainda assim, numa redução de consumos energéticos na ordem dos 23 % (490.337 kWh), isto é, uma poupança anual de 42.169 € aos custos de exploração e com um período de retorno de 1 ano e 11 meses.

Objetivo: o otimismo tem sido demonstrado como uma variável importante no ajustamento da qualidade de vida de pessoas com doenças crônicas. O estudo tem como objetivo verificar se o otimismo exerce um efeito moderador ou mediador entre os traços de personalidade e a qualidade de vida, em portugueses com doenças crônicas. Métodos: os modelos de regressão linear múltipla foram usados para avaliar o efeito de moderação e mediação do otimismo na qualidade de vida. A amostra, constituída por 729 doentes, recrutados nos principais hospitais de Portugal responderam a questionários de autorresposta avaliando questões sócio-demográficas e clínicas, personalidade, otimismo disposicional, qualidade de vida e bem-estar subjetivo. Resultados: os resultados encontrados mostraram que o otimismo disposicional não exerce um papel moderador entre os traços de personalidade e a qualidade de vida. Controlando por idade, sexo, nível de escolaridade e percepção da severidade da doença, o efeito dos traços de personalidade na qualidade de vida e no bem-estar subjetivo foi mediado pelo otimismo (parcial e total), expecto para as associações, neuroticismo/abertura à experiência e à saúde física. Conclusão: o otimismo disposicional exerce apenas um papel mediador entre os traços de personalidade e qualidade de vida, em pessoas com doenças crônicas, sugerindo que 'a expectativa de que coisas boas vão acontecer' contribui para uma melhor qualidade de vida e melhor bem-estar subjetivo.

The main objective of this work was to investigate the application of experimental design techniques for the identification of Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters. More specifically, this study attempts to elucidate the relative advantages/disadvantages of employing complex experimental design techniques in relation to equidistant sampling when applied to different reactor operation modes. All studies were supported by simulation data of a generic enzymatic process that obeys to the Michaelis-Menten kinetic equation. Different aspects were investigated, such as the influence of the reactor operation mode (batch, fed-batch with pulse wise feeding and fed-batch with continuous feeding) and the experimental design optimality criteria on the effectiveness of kinetic parameters identification. The following experimental design optimality criteria were investigated: 1) minimization of the sum of the diagonal of the Fisher information matrix (FIM) inverse (A-criterion), 2) maximization of the determinant of the FIM (D-criterion), 3) maximization of the smallest eigenvalue of the FIM (E-criterion) and 4) minimization of the quotient between the largest and the smallest eigenvalue (modified E-criterion). The comparison and assessment of the different methodologies was made on the basis of the Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLB) error in respect to the parameters vmax and Km of the Michaelis-Menten kinetic equation. In what concerns the reactor operation mode, it was concluded that fed-batch (pulses) is better than batch operation for parameter identification. When the former operation mode is adopted, the vmax CRLB error is lowered by 18.6 % while the Km CRLB error is lowered by 26.4 % when compared to the batch operation mode. Regarding the optimality criteria, the best method was the A-criterion, with an average vmax CRLB of 6.34 % and 5.27 %, for batch and fed-batch (pulses), respectively, while presenting a Km’s CRLB of 25.1 % and 18.1 %, for batch and fed-batch (pulses), respectively. As a general conclusion of the present study, it can be stated that experimental design is justified if the starting parameters CRLB errors are inferior to 19.5 % (vmax) and 45% (Km), for batch processes, and inferior to 42 % and to 50% for fed-batch (pulses) process. Otherwise equidistant sampling is a more rational decision. This conclusion clearly supports that, for fed-batch operation, the use of experimental design is likely to largely improve the identification of Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters.

The automatic acquisition of lexical associations from corpora is a crucial issue for Natural Language Processing. A lexical association is a recurrent combination of words that co-occur together more often than expected by chance in a given domain. In fact, lexical associations define linguistic phenomena such as idiomes, collocations or compound words. Due to the fact that the sense of a lexical association is not compositionnal, their identification is fundamental for the realization of analysis and synthesis that take into account all the subtilities of the language. In this report, we introduce a new statistically-based architecture that extracts from naturally occurring texts contiguous and non contiguous. For that purpose, three new concepts have been defined : the positional N-gram models, the Mutual Expectation and the GenLocalMaxs algorithm. Thus, the initial text is fisrtly transformed in a set of positionnal N-grams i.e ordered vectors of simple lexical units. Then, an association measure, the Mutual Expectation, evaluates the degree of cohesion of each positional N-grams based on the identification of local maximum values of Mutual Expectation. Great efforts have also been carried out to evaluate our metodology. For that purpose, we have proposed the normalisation of five well-known association measures and shown that both the Mutual Expectation and the GenLocalMaxs algorithm evidence significant improvements comparing to existent metodologies.

This paper is on the maximization of total profit in a day-ahead market for a price-taker producer needing a short-term scheduling for wind power plants coordination with concentrated solar power plants, having thermal energy storage systems. The optimization approach proposed for the maximization of profit is a mixed-integer linear programming problem. The approach considers not only transmission grid constraints, but also technical operating constraints on both wind and concentrated solar power plants. Then, an improved short-term scheduling coordination is provided due to the more accurate modelling presented in this paper. Computer simulation results based on data for the Iberian wind and concentrated solar power plants illustrate the coordination benefits and show the effectiveness of the approach.

Adhesively-bonded techniques offer an attractive option for repair of aluminium structures, and currently there are three widely used configurations, i.e., single-strap (SS), double-strap (DS) and scarf repairs. SS and DS repairs are straightforward to execute but stresses in the adhesive layer peak at the ends of the overlap. DS repairs additionally require both sides of the damaged structures to be reachable for repair, which is often not possible. In these repair configurations, some limitations emerge such as the weight, aerodynamic performance and aesthetics. The scarf repair is more complex to fabricate but stresses are more uniform along the adhesive bondline. Few studies of SS and DS repairs with embedded patches, such that these are completely flush with the adherends, are available in the literature. Furthermore, no data is available about the effects of geometrical and material parameters (e.g. the Young’s modulus of adhesive, E) on the mechanical behaviour optimization of embedded repairs. For this purpose, in this work standard SS and DD repairs, and also with embedded patches in the adherends, were tested under tension to allow the geometry optimization, by varying the overlap length (LO), thus allowing the maximization of the repairs strength. The influence of the patch embedding technique, showing notorious advantages such as aerodynamic or aesthetics, was compared in strength with standard strap repairs, for the viability analysis of its implementation. As a result of this work, some conclusions were drawn for the design optimization of bonded repairs on aluminium structures.

This paper is on the self-scheduling for a power producer taking part in day-ahead joint energy and spinning reserve markets and aiming at a short-term coordination of wind power plants with concentrated solar power plants having thermal energy storage. The short-term coordination is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem given as the maximization of profit subjected to technical operation constraints, including the ones related to a transmission line. Probability density functions are used to model the variability of the hourly wind speed and the solar irradiation in regard to a negative correlation. Case studies based on an Iberian Peninsula wind and concentrated solar power plants are presented, providing the optimal energy and spinning reserve for the short-term self-scheduling in order to unveil the coordination benefits and synergies between wind and solar resources. Results and sensitivity analysis are in favour of the coordination, showing an increase on profit, allowing for spinning reserve, reducing the need for curtailment, increasing the transmission line capacity factor. Functionally graded materials are a type of composite materials which are tailored to provide continuously varying properties, according to specific constituent's mixing distributions. These materials are known to provide superior thermal and mechanical performances when compared to the traditional laminated composites, because of this continuous properties variation characteristic, which enables among other advantages, smoother stresses distribution profiles. Therefore the growing trend on the use of these materials brings together the interest and the need for getting optimum configurations concerning to each specific application. In this work it is studied the use of particle swarm optimization technique for the maximization of a functionally graded sandwich beam bending stiffness. For this purpose, a set of case studies is analyzed, in order to enable to understand in a detailed way, how the different optimization parameters tuning can influence the whole process. It is also considered a re-initialization strategy, which is not a common approach in particle swarm optimization as far as it was possible to conclude from the published research works. As it will be shown, this strategy can provide good results and also present some advantages in some conditions. This work was developed and programmed on symbolic computation platform Maple 14. To study a flavour model with a non-minimal Higgs sector one must first define the symmetries of the fields; then identify what types of vacua exist and how they may break the symmetries; and finally determine whether the remnant symmetries are compatible with the experimental data. Here we address all these issues in the context of flavour models with any number of Higgs doublets. We stress the importance of analysing the Higgs vacuum expectation values that are pseudo-invariant under the generators of all subgroups. It is shown that the only way of obtaining a physical CKM mixing matrix and, simultaneously, non-degenerate and non-zero quark masses is requiring the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields to break completely the full flavour group, except possibly for some symmetry belonging to baryon number. The application of this technique to some illustrative examples, such as the flavour groups Delta (27), A(4) and S-3, is also presented.
