In Striving Towards a Common Language I outline an innovative methodology which consists of three strands encompassing an Indigenous-centred approach based on Indigenous Self-determination (participatory action research), relationship as central to socio-cultural dynamics, and feminist phenomenology. This methodology - which I call Living On the Ground was created in direct concert with 13 Indigenous women elders who were my hosts, teachers and walytja (family) as we worked together to create a dynamic cultural revitalisation project for their community, one of Australia's most remote Aboriginal settlements. I explain the processes I went through as a White Irish-Australian woman living with the women elders and their 11 dogs in a one room tin shed for two years, and tell of how the nexus of land, Ancestors, and the Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) combined with White cultural practices came to inspire a methodology which took the best from Indigenous and (White) feminist ways of knowing and of being. The goal of this study was to examine the longitudinal effects of five family factors on alcohol use among adolescent males. The family factors included familism (family pride, loyalty, and cohesion), parent derogation (being put down by parents), parent/child communication, family alcohol problems and family drug problems. The study focused on the effects of the family factors reported by a sample of 451 White-non-Hispanic and African American males during early and mid-adolescence on (1) the intensity of alcohol use in mid-adolescence, and (2) the number of problems associated with alcohol use during the transition to young adulthood. The study also explored racial differences in the effects of the family factors. The data for this study were derived from a two-phase longitudinal epidemiologic cohort study of male and female adolescents enrolled in middle schools in Miami, FL. Data were collected at four points between 1990 and 2001. Linear and logistical regressions were used to analyze the effects of the family variables on the dependent variables. ^ The results of the analyses indicated that all of the family variables except family drug problems were statistically significant predictors of the level of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. Familism had a moderate influence on both of the dependent variables at all data points, while parent derogation, parent/child communication and family alcohol problems were weak predictors. While the family factors varied by race, their impact on the dependent variables did not vary substantially. ^ This study had methodological shortcomings related to measurement and design that may have contributed to the weak influence of the variables. Future studies should explore possible mediating effects of these variables, and should employ more sensitive measures that are culturally appropriate. The results suggest that, since early family factors have long-term effects on children's substance-using behaviors, the family environment should be addressed in prevention and intervention efforts. ^

This study examines changes in the Cuban family in the United States produced by time, migration, and the rise of new generations. The thesis will use a data set extracted from the 5% Public Use Microdata Series (PUMS) of the U.S. Decennial Census of Population for the years 1970, 1980 and 1990. Contingency table analysis and comparison of means were used to examine various family-related variables. The analysis points to changes in the traditional Cuban family towards less traditional family arrangements. The multigenerational feature of the Cuban household has diminished as the elderly have become independent and are more likely to be living on their own. Although female labor participation remains high, the occupational patterns of the first generation of Cuban women have diversified and a new trend has emerged for the second generation. The second generation of Cuban women demonstrates a strong inclination for white-collar occupations. Fertility rates remain low.

Aquaculture, is perceived as having the greatest potential to meet the growing demand for aquatic food. Crustaceans form one of the main value added components in aquaculture and among them, shrimp aquaculture is the predominant one. Industrial shrimp fanning, in combination with poor management in shrimp aquaculture, has quickly led to severe pollution in shrimp ponds, thereby creating a suitable environment for development of bacterial and virus diseases. White spot disease is one of the most deadly diseases that are caused heavy loss in all Penaeid shrimps family. In Iran during 2002 to 2004 in the Kuzestan province and in 2005 in Bushehr province, the most ponds and farms infected with white spot and the entire industry was facing threat of closure. Owing to the impact of WSSV infection to shrimp aquaculture, there is an urgent need to develop suitable strategies to protect cultured shrimps and make aquaculture more sustainable. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the possibility of protecting shrimp against white spot syndrome virus using bioencapsulated Anemia with E. coil containing the recombinant protein VP28, designed. Virus genome was extracted from naturally infected Litopenaeus vannamei in the Choebdch farms and VP28 gene by designed primers was amplified, extracted, purified and cloned in E. coli TGI. Protein expression evaluated and inactivated bacteria containing recombinant protein encapsulated in Artemia nauplii. White shrimp post larvae stage 5 were fed for 5 days with recombinant nauplii and twice on days 7 and 25 after feeding with Artemia nauplii were challenged with white spot virus. The results of the first experiment revealed that cumulative mortality percent in the group receiving the bacteria containing recombinant plasmid (pMal + VP28) was %14.44±1.11 and the relative percent survival %80.30±1.51. In this group the mortality rates in the various repetitions varied from the 13.33% to 16.66% and relative percent survival of 77.27% to 81.81%. in the Non-recombinant plasmid group (pMal) Mean percent mortality was% 33.33±3.84 and the Relative Percent Survival %54.54±5.24 and in the group that received bacteria contained no recombinant plasmid the Mean cumulative mortality percent was%48.88 ± 5.87 and Relative Percent Survival%33.33± 8.01.

The tissue kallikreins are serine proteases encoded by highly conserved multigene families. The rodent kallikrein (KLK) families are particularly large, consisting of 13 26 genes clustered in one chromosomal locus. It has been recently recognised that the human KLK gene family is of a similar size (15 genes) with the identification of another 12 related genes (KLK4-KLK15) within and adjacent to the original human KLK locus (KLK1-3) on chromosome 19q13.4. The structural organisation and size of these new genes is similar to that of other KLK genes except for additional exons encoding 5 or 3 untranslated regions. Moreover, many of these genes have multiple mRNA transcripts, a trait not observed with rodent genes. Unlike all other kallikreins, the KLK4-KLK15 encoded proteases are less related (25–44%) and do not contain a conventional kallikrein loop. Clusters of genes exhibit high prostatic (KLK2-4, KLK15) or pancreatic (KLK6-13) expression, suggesting evolutionary conservation of elements conferring tissue specificity. These genes are also expressed, to varying degrees, in a wider range of tissues suggesting a functional involvement of these newer human kallikrein proteases in a diverse range of physiological processes.

An employee's inability to balance work and family responsibilities has resulted in an increase in stress related illnesses. Historically, research into the nexus between work and family has primarily focused on the work/family conflict relationship, predominately investigating the impact of this conflict on parents, usually mothers. To date research has not sufficiently examined the human resource management practices that enable all parents to achieve a balance between their work and family lives. This paper explores the relationship between contemporary family friendly HRM policies and employed parents perceptions of work/family enhancement, work/family satisfaction, propensity to turnover, and work/family conflict. Self-report questionnaire data from 326 men and women is analysed and discussed to enable organisations to consider the use of family friendly policies and thus create a convergence between the well-being of employees and the effectiveness of the organisation.
