Rediscovery of Leptaxis vetusta (Morelet & Drouet, 1857), a subfossil land snail from the Quaternary of Santa Maria (Azores)

During a recent field work on the southern coast of the island of Santa Maria (Azores) a bulk sample of 37 shells and 25 fragments of Leptaxis vetusta was assembled from Late Pleistocene and Holocene slope deposits outcropping in the area. These specimens are the first of this rare subfossil species to be mentioned since the original descriptions of Arthur Morelet and Henri Drouet (1857). The purposes of our paper are a systematic and biometric description of L. vestuta. For the first time, the original type: locality was localized with accuracy over the southern downslopes of Pico do Facho, between Figueiral and Prainha. The subfossil specimens were collected in slope deposits and detritic fans, overlying a fossiliferous marine deposit situated over the 2-3 m abrasion platform of Praia and Prainha bay. The age and factors associated to the extinction of this species are discussed, including the destruction of the original laurel cover and the colonization by Otala lactea (Muller, 1774), a continental helicid introduced and widespread in Santa Maria.

List of species in the genus Lutzomyia, França, 1924 (Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) from the State of Mato Grosso

This work had the objective of listing the sand fly species that occur in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data relating to entomological surveys conducted between 1996 and 2004 were obtained from the National Health Foundation and the State Health Department, and this was supplemented with information from research carried out in the state and from the specialized literature. There were records of 106 sand fly species belonging to the genus Lutzomyia. This is a rich and diversified fauna, with some species restricted to forested areas and others recorded throughout the state, independent of the vegetation type, and in areas modified by human action, with predominance of Lutzomyia whitmani.

As eleições europeias de 2014 para o Parlamento Europeu viram mais uma redução na afluência de eleitores, uma tendência contínua desde a primeira eleição direta em 1979 que sublinha a incapacidade da União Europeia para captar o interesse dos seus cidadãos.Desde a sua fundação, o projecto europeu foi adaptado para atender às necessidades das elites europeias e vários grupos de interesse, mas tem lutado para comunicar as suas ambições e sucessos para o público em geral. Este relatórioprimeiramente examina o desenvolvimento das políticas de comunicação e de informação da União Europeia ao longo dos anos e alguns dos sinais do défice de comunicação entre a União Europeia e os seus cidadãos.Em seguida, o relatório vai apresentar o Centro de Informação Europeia Jacques Delors, um dos intermediários da União Europeia em Portugal, onde eu realizei o meu estágio e cujos objetivos são divulgar informação sobre as políticas, iniciativas e informações gerais provenientes da sede europeia.Depois vou apresentar as tarefas que eu tinha de completar durante a duração do meu estágio e as observações que conlui.

Owner portraits and heraldry in the "Lamoignon Hours"

Because of the distance in time and the lack of testifying documents, one should be extremely careful when labelling portraits in medieval books of hours as donor portraits or owner portraits. There are, however, manuscripts that reveal their first owner within their decorative programme, and the Lamoignon Hours (Lisbon, Gulbenkian, ms LA 237) is one of these. This article aims to discuss the iconography of the three portraits found on f.165v, f.202v and f.286v, as well as the relevance of portraiture and heraldic insignia in books of hours and the significance of such content to the original owner and to those who possessed the book afterwards.
