O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência do cetoprofeno sobre o processo de reparação óssea em tíbias de ratos, por meio da análise da densidade óptica digital. Vinte ratos da linhagem Wistar foram divididos em 2 grupos: um grupo controle (sem tratamento) e um grupo tratado com cetoprofeno. Os procedimentos experimentais consistiram de: anestesia, cirurgia, administração do cetoprofeno e exame radiográfico. As imagens radiográficas foram adquiridas empregando-se o sensor digital Visualix GX-S-HDI™ e um aparelho de raios X. As radiografias foram realizadas nos períodos baseline (inicial), 7, 14, 21 e 30 dias pós-operatório, sendo a densidade óptica (DO) avaliada por meio do sistema Vix winTM 1.4. Os valores médios da leitura da do obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente por meio de ANOVA e teste de Tukey com nível de significância de 5%. No grupo controle, houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p=0,001) entre o tempo e a DO, enquanto no grupo tratado com cetoprofeno a diferença não foi estatisticamente significante (p=0,100). O grupo controle apresentou as menores proporções de do (%) no 1º e 7º dias e as maiores proporções de do (%) no 14º, 21º e 30º dias, com diferença estatisticamente significante (p=0,001). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p=0,100) entre as proporções médias de do (%) no grupo tratado, independentemente do período de avaliação. Os achados deste trabalho sugerem que houve influência do cetoprofeno sobre o processo de reparo ósseo, uma vez que na primeira semana o medicamento proporcionou aumento na densidade óptica e provocou atraso na neoformação óssea após o 21º dia.

O efeito de três níveis de sombreamento (0, 30 e 50%) sobre o desenvolvimento, partição dos assimilados e a produção de rabanetes (Raphanus sativus L.), cultivar Vermelho Redondo, foi estudado em condições de campo, município de São Manuel, SP. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após a emergência. O sombreamento prolongou o ciclo de desenvolvimento da cultura, reduziu o teor de clorofila, expandiu a área foliar e afetou a produção de raízes tuberosas, enquanto que com 30% de sombreamento não houve redução no tamanho nem na massa das raízes.

Outbred Wistar rats were randomly assigned to three experimental groups: GI, 10 nondiabetic control rats; GII, 10 alloxan-diabetic control rats; GIII, 25 alloxan-diabetic rats that received pancreaticoduodenal transplantation (PDT) from normal donor Wistar rats and were immunosuppressed with cyclosporin A. For 7 prior and 4, 7, 14, 21, and 30 days posttransplantation (during which the animals were housed in metabolic cages for periods of 24 hours) body weight, water and food intake, urine output, blood and urinary glucose, plasma insulin, and glucagon were recorded. These parameters were also concurrently recorded for diabetic and nondiabetic control rats. Animals were sacrificed after 30 days and histological and immunohistochemical studies of the pancreas were performed. Pancreatic transplants consistently and significantly improved the metabolic abnormalities of the diabetic rat (P < 0.01) by restoring body weight gain, and by immediate relief of hyperglycemia, glucosuria, polyuria, polydipsia, and also the low levels of plasma insulin. The plasma glucagon, elevated in diabetic control rats, did not change after transplant.

In the present study, we investigated changes in mesenteric, renal, and hindquarter vascular resistance during the pressor response produced by bilateral carotid occlusion (BCO) in conscious, freely moving normal and denervated (aortic, carotid, or both) rats. BCO was performed using special previously implanted cuffs. In control normal rats, the increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) during early and late responses (37 +/- 4 and 21 +/- 2 mm Hg, respectively) was related to increased renal (125 +/- 12% and 45 +/- 10%) and mesenteric (38 +/- 13% and 41 +/- 5%) but not hindquarter (14 +/- 4% and 8 +/- 7%) vascular resistance. In aortic-denervated rats, the greater MAP increase in early and late responses (57 +/- 4 and 44 +/- 4 mm Hg, respectively) compared with normal rats was related to a marked increase in hindquarter (137 +/- 26% and 106 +/- 26%) and mesenteric (104 +/- 14% and 66 +/- 9%) vascular resistance. In carotid-denervated rats, MAP increase and change in vascular resistance were similar to those values observed in control rats. Sinoaortic-denervated rats showed a greater MAP increase (34 +/- 4 mm Hg) during late response and a reduced increase in renal vascular resistance (46 +/- 6%) during early response. The present results show that 1) the pressor response to BCO in normal rats is associated with an increase in renal and mesenteric vascular resistance, 2) the aortic baroreceptors buffer the increase in mesenteric and especially hindquarter vascular resistance during BCO, and 3) the reduced pressor response in late response is probably related to a reduced increase in renal vascular resistance during this component compared with the early response.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of calcitonin in promoting bone growth in surgical bone defects in rat mandibles. Fifty male rats were divided into two groups: bone defect (control) and bone defect with calcitonin (experimental). A circular bone defect 4 mm in diameter was made in the mandibular bone of the rats in the angle region, and covered with a polytetrafluoroethylene barrier. The experimental group received 2 IU/kg of synthetic salmon calcitonin intramuscularly three times a week, with treatment starting immediately after surgery. The animals were killed 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the surgical procedure. The bone defects were examined histologically and by histomorphometric analysis. The Student t-test was applied to the histomorphometric data, with the level of significance set at 5%. The animals of the experimental group showed a lower level of bone formation at almost all time points than the control group, but no difference between groups was observed 28 days after surgery. The volume of newly formed bone matrix was significantly greater in the control than the experimental group at 7, 14 and 21 days, as determined by both morphologic and histomorphometric analysis. Bone repair in the calcitonin-treated animals was delayed in comparison to controls, indicating the need for further studies on male rats.

This experiment was undertaken to determine the possible presence of Salmonella in poultry diets. A total of two hundred samples of ration from 4 commercial poultry feed industries were examined. The results revealed the presence of salmonellae in 10% of the samples studied and 14 serotypes were identified. The procedure for Salmonella isolation included the pre-enrichment step and the strains were submitted to antimicrobial tests. The 29 strains were resistant to the followings antimicrobial agents (% of resistance in parenthesis): Erythromycin (100%), sulphonamides (100%), colistin (100%), streptomycin (100%), bacitracin (100%), penicillin (100%), tetracycline (92,9%), cephalothin (75%), carbenicillin (62,5%), ampicillin (46,5%), kanamycin (46,5%), nitrofurantoin (39,3%), neomycin (25%), amikacin (21,4%), sulphazotrin (21,4%), nalidix acid (18,8%), chloramphenycol (17,9%), linco-spectin (17,9%), gentamicin (17,9%), and cefoxitin (6,3%).

The present work aimed to evaluate the endectocide activity of a new injectable long-action formulation, containing ivermectin (IVM) and abamectin (ABA). In each one of the four experiments performed, the following groups were formed: group I: 2.25% IVM (450 mu g/kg) + 1.25% ABA (250 mu g/kg), group II: 3.15% IVM (630 mu g/kg) and group III: control. Eighteen bovine naturally infected by gastrointestinal nematoda were selected for anthelmintic evaluation and necropsied on posttreatment day (PTD) 14 to estimate the total parasitic burden. For the Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus field trial, 30 bovine were selected by means of counts of semi-engorged R. (B.) microplus and the therapeutic and residual efficacy evaluated by tick counts on PTDs 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84 and 91. In the stall test, 15 calves were artificially infested with 5000 R. (B.) microplus (Mozzo strain) larvae three times a week and daily collections of all the engorged female ticks detached from each calf were performed until the PTD 80. Forty bovine naturally infected with Dermatobia hominis larvae were selected and the number of larvae was counted by visual and tactile inspection on PTDs 3, 7, 14, 28, 35, 49, 63, 77, 91 and 105. In this trial, a formulation containing 1% doramectin (200 mu g/kg) was also used. IVM + ABA formulation and 3.15% IVM eliminated four of the eight species of nematode identified. The anthelmintic efficacy of the avermectins association against Haemonchus placei, Cooperia spatulata and C. punctata was 89.64%, 98.84% and 97.69%, while 3.15% IVM achieved 30.98%, 84.79% and 75.56%, respectively. The two formulations evaluated showed reduced acaricide action on the PTD I and 3, reaching high efficacy percentages from PTD 14 onward. The IVM + ABA showed efficacy above 95% in the period between PTDs 21 and 49. In the stall test, it observed no difference (P > 0.05) between the two formulations regarding the R. (B.) microplus counts during the entire evaluation period. IVM + ABA reduced the number of ticks from the PTD 1 to 77 (P < 0.05) and 3.15% IVM reduced (P < 0.05) the tick number from PTD 4 up to PTD 80. The three endectocides showed no difference (P > 0.05) regarding the number of D. hominis larvae and prevented this parasite reestablishment until PTD 105. These results indicate that the IVM + ABA association showed higher anthelmintic activity and similar efficacy against arthropods to the formulation containing 3.15% IVM. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. To evaluate the nutritional value of African palm kernel meal (Elaeis guineensis) on the performance of Nile tilapia (Oseochromis niloticus), five isonitrogenous (30% crude protein), isoenergetic (2,800 Kcal/kg of digestible energy), and isofibrous (10% crude fiber) diets, with increasing levels of African palm kernel meal (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35%) were fed ad libitum for 18 weeks to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings, averaging 1.52 ± 0.04 g of body weight, housed for 120 days in 60 liter aquaria with six fingerlings. To determine the production traits, weight gain, apparent food conversion, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, weight gain percentage, net protein utilization, and body composition, fish were weighted at six-week intervals. Statistical analysis of recorded data were performed through multivariate profile analysis and polynomial regression models. Results showed that feeding fingerling Nile tilapia with ratios containing up to 35% of African palm kernel meal does not affect production performance.

The authors studied the histochemical and ultrastructural modifications that occur in the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) of fibularis longus muscles of mice with an age range of 3 to 21 months. Twenty-four male and female animals were killed at 3, 5, 14 and 21 months of age: 7 of them at 3 months, 4 of them at 5 month, 9 at 14 months and 4 at 21 months. The fibularis longus muscles were processed and their NMJ examined with the transmission electron microscope. The most relevant changes were associated with the degeneration and retraction of terminal axons, i.e., axons poor in synaptic vesicles with degenerated mitochondria, and exhibiting multivesicular bodies and vacuoles; exposed and widened junctional folds and cytoplasmic processes of Schwann cells located in the synaptic gutter. The presence of lysosomes or lipofuchsin in the juxtajunctional sarcoplasm was also noted. These observations suggest that the phenomena of retraction and budding occur in the NMJ with advancing age, with a predominance of events associated with degeneration, leading to profound changes in NMJ shape.

The aim of our study was to analyze the morphological events in the skeletal muscle of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after a traumatic lesion. Thirty-two fish were used, on which a small longitudinal incision was made in the muscle. The fish were sacrificed after 7, 14, 21, and 42 days and muscle samples were collected from the lesion and processed for morphological analysis. Muscle regeneration in the tilapia occurred gradually through the analyzed period, possibly due to the proliferation and differentiation of myosatellite cells, which were more morphologically evident 7 and 14 days after lesion.

The effects of salt concentration levels in electrical conductivity (EC) were evaluated in chrysanthemum root, cultivated in substrate using two sampling methods, under greenhouse conditions. The experiment was carried out in Paranapanema, São Paulo using the experimental design in randomized blocks and four replications. The treatments consisted of eight sampling periods of substrate solutions in pots: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56 days after strike root and five salt concentration levels of applied saline solution: 1.42; 1.65; 1.89; 2.13 and 2.36 dS m -1 in the vegetative period and during the reproduction period of flower budding: 1.71; 1.97; 2.28; 2.57 and 2.85 dS m -1. The substrate solution EC monitoring was done using two methods: solution extractors and 1:2 water diluted solution. The use of solution extractors and 1:2 water diluted solution allowed substrate solution EC monitoring along the culture cycle; the amount of salt concentration applied in the substrate caused the substrate salinity increase; the method using solution extractors presented higher EC values in the substrate.

This work's objectives were to isolate and evaluate the growth of the symbiotic fungus of Atta capiguara Gonçalves on artificial medium, under different pH and temperature conditions. Isolation was accomplished using the following media: Sabouraud, oat-agar, PDA, and PDA with the addition of extracts from the grasses Paspalum sp. Flügge and Hyparrhenia rufa (Nees) Stapf.. The medium used in the growth study was PDA with the addition of a Paspalum sp. (0.22%, w/v) extract at initial pH values of 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5. Mycelium disks were transferred to plates containing the culture medium. The plates were maintained at temperatures of 20, 23, and 26 ± 1°C. Mycelial radial growth evaluations were performed at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days of incubation. Fungus isolation was obtained in all media studied. The highest radial means were obtained at initial pH values of 6.0 and 7.5 and temperatures of 23 and 26± 1°C. Greater plot losses occurred at the initial pH condition of 7.5. In general, A. capiguara fungi can be grown in the medium studied, at an initial pH of 6.0 and temperatures of 23 or 26± 1°C. Radial growth evaluations at 14 and 28 days of incubation can be recommended for substrate studies involving the symbiotic fungus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of osteocalcin protein during the alveolar bone healing process in rats. Twenty four rats were used in this study and, after anesthetic induction, they had their right upper incisors extracted. At 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the tooth extraction, the animals were injected 4% formaldehyde. The histological tissue pieces were colored in hematoxilin and eosin and the immunohistochemistry reaction for osteocalcin was performed. At seven days lesser neoformed trabeculae bone and a small quantity of osteocalcin labeling were observed. At 14 and 21 days a larger quantity of neoformed trabeculae bone and higher osteocalcin values were detected. At 28 days the largest quantity of neoformed trabeculae bone and a decrease on the amount of osteocalcin immunolabelling were noticed. According to our results and considering the limits of the present study it is possible to conclude that a greater osteocalcin expression is observed at 14 and 21 days postoperatively, characterizing the periods when intense mineralization of the bone tissue occurs during the alveolar bone healing process.
