A series of enantiopure 2,2'-bipyridines have been synthesised from the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites of 2-chloroquinolines. Several of the resulting hydroxylated 2,2'-bipyridines were found to be useful chiral ligands for the asymmetric aminolysis of meso-epoxides leading to the formation of enantioenriched amino alcohols (-> 84%ee). N-oxide and N,N'-dioxide derivatives of these 2,2'-bipyridines, including separable atropisomers, have been synthesised and used as enantioselective organocatalysts in the asymmetric allylation of aldehydes to give allylic alcohols (-> 86%ee).

This article examines a previously unnoticed link between the Puritan John Burgess and the Calvinist conformist George Hakewill. In 1604 Burgess preached a court sermon so outspoken and critical of James I’s religious policy that he was imprisoned. Nearly twenty years later, however, Hakewill chose to incorporate extended passages from Burgess’s sermon into the series of sermons, King David’s vow (1621), preached to Prince Charles’s household. This article considers why Burgess’s sermon became so resonant for Hakewill in the early 1620s and also demonstrates how Hakewill deliberately sought to moderate Burgess’s strident polemic. In so doing the article provides important new evidence for the politically attuned sermon culture at Prince Charles’s court in the early 1620s and also suggests how, as the parameters for clerical conformity shifted in the latter years of James’s reign, Calvinist conformists found a new appeal in the works of moderate Puritans. Enantiopure cis-dihydro-1,2-diol metabolites, obtained from toluene dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation of six monosubstituted benzene substrates, have been converted to their corresponding cis-hexahydro-12-diol derivatives by catalytic hydrogenation via their cis-tetrahydro-1,2-diol intermediates. Optimal reaction conditions for total catalytic hydrogenation of the cis-dihydro-1,2-diols have been established using six heterogeneous catalysts. The relative and absolute configurations of the resulting benzene cis-hexahydro-1,2-diol products have been unequivocally established by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. Methods have been developed to obtain enantiopure cis-hexahydro-1,2-diol diastereoisomers, to desymmetrise a meso-cis-hexahydro-1,2-diol and to synthesise 2-substituted cyclohexanols. The potential of these enantiopure cyclohexanols as chiral reagents was briefly evaluated through their application in the synthesis of two enantiomerically enriched phosphine oxides from the corresponding racemic phosphine precursors.

cis-Dihydrocatechols, derived from biological cis-dihydroxylation of methyl benzoate, iodobenzene and benzonitrile, using the microorganism Pseudomonas putida UV4, were converted into pericosines A, C, and B, respectively. This approach constitutes the shortest syntheses, to date, of these important natural products with densely packed functionalities.

Over twenty years ago ‘Our Common Future’ presented a conceptualization and explanation of the concept of sustainable development. Since then numerous alternative definitions of the concept have been offered, of which at least some are exclusive to each other. At the same time, the role of business in the transition to sustainable development has increasingly received attention. Bringing these two trends in sustainable development together, this paper returns to the Brundtland version of the concept to examine to what extent the original principles of sustainable development are still embedded within key business guidelines, namely the UN Global Compact, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, the ICC Business Charter for Sustainable Development, the CAUX Principles, the Global Sullivan Principles and the CERES Principles. The findings suggest that these business guidelines tend to emphasize environmental rather than social aspects of sustainable development, in particular to the detriment of the original Brundtland prioritization of the needs of the poorest. Furthermore, the attention to environmental aspects stresses win-win situations and has a clear managerialist focus; whereas more conceptual environmental issues concerning systems interdependencies, critical thresholds or systemic limits to growth find little attention. The normative codes and principles targeted at the private sector thus not only add another voice to the multiple discourses on sustainable development but also contribute to a reinterpretation of the original agenda set by Brundtland towards conceptualizations of sustainable development around the needs of industrialised rather than developing countries. beta-D-glucose dissolved in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate in a 6 : 1 molar ratio (ionic liquid : glucose) has been studied by neutron scattering, NMR and molecular dynamics simulations. Good agreement was found between simulated neutron scattering profiles generated for isotopically substituted liquid systems and those experimentally determined as well as between simulated and experimental diffusion coefficients obtained by Pulsed Field Gradient NMR spectroscopy. The overriding glucose-ionic liquid interactions in the liquid are hydrogen-bonding between acetate oxygens and sugar hydroxyl groups. The ionic liquid cation was found to play only a minor role in the solvation of the sugar and does not participate in hydrogen-bonding with the sugar to any significant degree. NOESY experiments lend further evidence that there is no direct interaction between sugar hydroxyl groups and acidic hydrogens on the ionic liquid cation.
