This document will demonstrate the methodology used to create an energy and conductance based model for power electronic converters. The work is intended to be a replacement for voltage and current based models which have limited applicability to the network nodal equations. Using conductance-based modeling allows direct application of load differential equations to the bus admittance matrix (Y-bus) with a unified approach. When applied directly to the Y-bus, the system becomes much easier to simulate since the state variables do not need to be transformed. The proposed transformation applies to loads, sources, and energy storage systems and is useful for DC microgrids. Transformed state models of a complete microgrid are compared to experimental results and show the models accurately reflect the system dynamic behavior.

Writer identification consists in determining the writer of a piece of handwriting from a set of writers. In this paper we present a system for writer identification in old handwritten music scores which uses only music notation to determine the author. The steps of the proposed system are the following. First of all, the music sheet is preprocessed for obtaining a music score without the staff lines. Afterwards, four different methods for generating texture images from music symbols are applied. Every approach uses a different spatial variation when combining the music symbols to generate the textures. Finally, Gabor filters and Grey-scale Co-ocurrence matrices are used to obtain the features. The classification is performed using a k-NN classifier based on Euclidean distance. The proposed method has been tested on a database of old music scores from the 17th to 19th centuries, achieving encouraging identification rates.

An electronic identification system involving placement of transponders in rumen boluses was evaluated in thirty feedlot steers. All the devices were retained and remained functional in the steers. Twenty-eight of the devices were recovered at the packing plant. Two of them were lost because of an incomplete understanding that attempts were being made to recover the boluses from rumen contents. Use of rumen boluses is a practical alternative for electronic identification of cattle that is permanent and nearly tamper proof.

This study uses PCR-derived marker systems to investigate the extent and distribution of genetic variability of 53 Garnacha accessions coming from Italy, France and Spain. The samples studied include 28 Italian accessions (named Tocai rosso in Vicenza area; Alicante in Sicily and Elba island; Gamay perugino in Perugia province; Cannonau in Sardinia), 19 Spanish accessions of different types (named Garnacha tinta, Garnacha blanca, Garnacha peluda, Garnacha roja, Garnacha erguida, Garnacha roya) and 6 French accessions (named Grenache and Grenache noir). In order to verify the varietal identity of the samples, analyses based on 14 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were performed. The presence of an additional allele at ISV3 locus (151 bp) was found in four Tocai rosso accessions and in a Sardinian Cannonau clone, that are, incidentally, chimeras. In addition to microsatellite analysis, intravarietal variability study was performed using AFLP, SAMPL and M-AFLP molecular markers. AFLPs could discriminate among several Garnacha samples; SAMPLs allowed distinguishing few genotypes on the basis of their geographic origin, whereas M-AFLPs revealed plant-specific markers, differentiating all accessions. Italian samples showed the greatest variability among themselves, especially on the basis of their different provenance, while Spanish samples were the most similar, in spite of their morphological diversity.

A collection of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae strains isolated from ultramafic and contaminated soils in Italy and Germany, respectively, was analyzed for resistance to nickel and cobalt ions. These assays led to the identification of strain UPM1137, which is able to grow at high concentrations of nickel and cobalt. In order to identify genetic systems involved in the homeostasis to these metals, a random mutagenesis was carried out in UPM1137 by inserting a Tn5-derivative minitransposon. As a result 4313 transconjugants were obtained, being 39 of them (0.90%) unable to grow at 1.5 mM NiCl2. The identification of the transposon insertion site in these mutants showed that the disrupted genes encode proteins belonging to different functional categories, where the secreted and membrane proteins were the most numerous. The analysis of heavy metal resistance and phenotypes in symbiotic and free –living cells will define the contribution of these genes to metal homeostasis.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to review the literature on voting systems based on Condorcet and Borda. We compared and classified them. Also we referred to some strengths and weaknesses of voting systems and finally in a case study, we made use of the Borda voting system for collective decision making in the Salonga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

MLS-based identification of nonlinear systems is largely affected by deviations in the excitation signal amenable to the combined effect of DC-offset and an arbitrary gain. These induce orthogonality loss in the MLS filter bank output, thus invalidating the underlying identification construction. In this paper we present a correction algorithm to derive the corrected Volterra kernels from the biased estimations provided by the standard MLS-based procedure.

The location of ground faults in railway electric lines in 2 × 5 kV railway power supply systems is a difficult task. In both 1 × 25 kV and transmission power systems it is common practice to use distance protection relays to clear ground faults and localize their positions. However, in the particular case of this 2 × 25 kV system, due to the widespread use of autotransformers, the relation between the distance and the impedance seen by the distance protection relays is not linear and therefore the location is not accurate enough. This paper presents a simple and economical method to identify the subsection between autotransformers and the conductor (catenary or feeder) where the ground fault is happening. This method is based on the comparison of the angle between the current and the voltage of the positive terminal in each autotransformer. Consequently, after the identification of the subsection and the conductor with the ground defect, only the subsection where the ground fault is present will be quickly removed from service, with the minimum effect on rail traffic. This method has been validated through computer simulations and laboratory tests with positive results.
