The fabrication and operational techniques of Malian and Ndurutu traps mostly used by the fishermen in River Rima in north western Nigeria were evaluated through structured questionnaire and measurement of samples of the Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. There was no standard in the dimensions of either of the traps. The traps were made of locally sourced materials, except the synthetic net of the Malian trap. About 81 and 80% of the respondents fabricated their Malian and Ndurutu traps, respectively. The major problems encountered in the structure and operation of the Malian trap included projection above water, stealing of catches and trap, and trapping of small sized fishes as indicated by 61.9, 47.6 and 28.6% of the respondents, respectively. In the case of the Ndurutu trap, 72.0, 48.0, 12.0 and 8.0% of the respondents respectively indicated poor durability, single entrance valve, destruction by cattle and instability in water, as the major problems encountered. As improvement measures for the Malian trap, the respondents suggested increase in number and size of valve (81.0%), horizontal positioning (57.1%) and square shape (47.6%) while 52.0% each suggested increase in number of entrance valve and netting of Ndurutu trap. The fishermen demonstrated ingenuity in the fabrication and operation of the traps, but they failed to initiate the required improvement. It is important to critically examine the designs, materials, costs and limitations of the traps and the suggestions of the fishermen, as basis for improvement on the technology of the traps

Numerous studies have shown that flexible materials improve resilience and durability of a structure. Several studies have investigated the behavior of elastic plates under the influence of a free stream, such as studies of the fluttering flag and others of shape reconfiguration, due to a free stream.
The principle engineering contribution of this thesis is the design and development of a vertical axis wind turbine that features pliable blades which undergo various modes of behavior, ultimately leading to rotational propulsion of the turbine. The wind turbine design was tested in a wind tunnel and at the Caltech Laboratory for Optimized Wind Energy. Ultimately, the flexible blade vertical axis wind turbine proved to be an effective way of harnessing the power of the wind.
In addition, this body of work builds on the current knowledge of elastic cantilever plates in a free stream flow by investigating the inverted flag. While previous studies have focused on the fluid structure interaction of a free stream on elastic cantilever plates, none had studied the plate configuration where the trailing edge was clamped, leaving the leading edge free to move. Furthermore, the studies presented in this thesis establish the geometric boundaries of where the large-amplitude flapping occurs.

Tratamento restaurador atraumático tornou-se uma opção real para o tratamento da cárie dentária em saúde pública no Brasil. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar durabilidade, resistência e eficácia de 70 restaurações em 31 alunos (entre 6 a 12 anos de idade na Escola Municipal Rotary, RJ - Brasil). Depois de CPO-D e ceo-exame de acordo com critérios da OMS, todos os alunos com selecionados receberam TRA com VITRO MOLAR - DFL, juntamente com instruções de saúde bucal. Os critérios de exclusão foram a presença de cavidades muito profundas e exposição pulpar, casos em que os alunos foram encaminhados para o Postos de Saúde Municipal. In vitro avaliou-se a influência do tempo de entrada em serviço e do tipo de cobertura protetora utilizada na resistência coesiva do Cimento de Ionômero de Vidro utilizado, por meio de ensaios de tração diametral. Confeccionou-se para o teste de tração diametral 6 espécimes para cada variante, 72 no total, com dimensões de 4 mm de diâmetro por 8 mm de comprimento, divididos entre os grupos: grupo1 sem protetor (controle); grupo2 vaselina sólida; grupo3 verniz para unhas. Realizou-se ensaios mecânicos em uma máquina universal de ensaios EMIC DL 500 MF, após a confecção e estocagem individual dos espécimes em potes plásticos contendo 5 ml de água deionizada, que formaram os subgrupos descritos a seguir: a - 20 minutos; b - 2 horas; c - 24 horas; d - 7 dias. Os dados obtidos foram tratados por ANOVA e por Student Newman-Keuls (p<0,05). Ao se avaliar a influência dos diferentes protetores de superfície no CIV utilizado no presente trabalho observou-se que, os protetores de superfície tiveram influência no comportamento do material (p=0,000), com o verniz para unhas mostrando um desempenho superior ao da vaselina sólida. Quanto ao tempo, não foi possível verificar ruptura do material no prazo de 20 minutos, pois os corpos de prova sofriam deformação elástica catastrófica não sendo adequado para a finalidade desejada. Os tempos de 24 horas e sete dias foram semelhantes entre si e diferentes do tempo de duas horas. As restaurações foram clinicamente avaliadas depois de 6, 12, e 24 meses após sua alocação. No total 72 restaurações foram realizadas em 31 escolares. Depois de seis meses, 5 restaurações fraturaram e 3 perderam algum material. Após 12 meses, oito restaurações foram perdidas e apenas 1 fraturou. Na avaliação após 24 meses, mais 12 restaurações foram perdidas e 3 perderam material. Não foram registradas lesões cariosas secundarias após esse período, mesmo quando as restaurações foram parcialmente perdidas. Clinicamente conclui-se que quando a técnica do TRA é bem indicada e aplicada corretamente pode haver uma redução significativa no número de dentes perdidos por lesões de cárie nos indivíduos que participaram do nosso estudo.

利用全谱直读电感耦合等离子体原子发射光谱仪(ICP—AES)定量分析了TeO2-ZnO系统玻璃的化学稳定性,并从TeO2-ZnO系统玻璃的结构与价键理论的角度分析了水对该系统玻璃的侵蚀机理。实验结果表明,水对该玻璃系统的侵蚀过程属于连续性溶解过程,且获得该系统玻璃化学稳定性较理想组分。

高功率大尺寸激光玻璃硬包边技术对于提高激光玻璃的饱和增益系数具有非常重要的价值。本文采用传统的玻璃熔制方法,研究了Li-Na混合碱效应对磷酸盐包边玻璃折射率、热膨胀系数α、玻璃转变温度Tg、膨胀软化温度Td以及溶解速率(DR)的影响规律。研究结果表明:当Li/(Li+Na)=0.5时,Tg、Td和DR取得极小值,表明混合碱效应既能降低包边玻璃的转变温度,又能提高包边玻璃的化学稳定性,这些性质对于包边玻璃的设计是非常可贵的。

abstract {Silica glass is an attractive host matrix for the emission ions of rare earth and transition metal ions because it has small thermal expansion coefficient, strong thermal resistance, large fracture strength and good chemical durability and so on. However, a major obstacle to using it as the host matrix is a phenomenon of concentration quenching. In this paper, we introduces a novel method to restrain the concentration quenching by using a porous glass with SiO2 content > 95% (in mass) and prepare intense fluorescence high-SiO2 glasses and high-SiO2 laser glass. The porous glass with high-SiO2 content was impregnated with rare-earth and transition metal ions, and consequently sintered into a compact non-porous glass in reduction or oxidization atmospheres. Various intense fluorescence glasses with high emission yields, a vacuum ultraviolet-excited intensely luminescent glass, high silica glass containing high concentration of Er3+ ion, ultrabroad infrared luminescent Bi-doped high silica glass and Nd3+-doped silica microchip laser glass were obtained by this method. The porous glass is also favorable for co-impregnating multi-active-ions. It can bring effective energy transferring between various active ions in the glass and increases luminescent intensity and extend range of excitation spectrum. The luminescent active ions-doped high-SiO2 glasses are potential host materials for high power solid-state lasers and new transparent fluorescence materials.}

包边技术是提高大尺寸激光玻璃饱和增益系数的关键技术。采用传统的方法熔制玻璃,研究了 P2O5含量对 P2O5-Al2O3-B2O3-CuCl-Na2O-ZnO磷酸盐包边玻璃的折射率、热膨胀系数、玻璃转变温度、膨胀软化温度以及化学稳定性的影响。结果表明:当 P2O5的摩尔分数为 60%左右,玻璃样品具有最高的折射率(1.522 0)、最低的玻璃转变温度(352.4 ℃)、较好的化学稳定性[0.52 mg/(cm^2·d)]和适宜的热膨胀系数(128.427×10^-7/℃),是用作钕磷酸盐激光玻璃硬包边的理

A new Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped phosphate glass has been prepared, which exhibits good chemical durability and spectralproperties. Planar graded index waveguides have been fabricated in the glass by (Ag+)-Na(+) ion exchange in a mixed melt of silver nitrate and potassium nitrate. Ion exchange is carried out by varying the process parameters such as temperature, diffusion time, and molten salt compositions. The diffusion parameters, diffusion coefficients, and activation energy are determined by the guidelines of fabricated waveguides, which are determined by the input prism coupling technique.

The effect of Al(PO3)(3) content on physical, chemical and optical properties of fluorophosphate glasses for 2 mu m application, such as thermal stability, chemical durability, surface hardness, absorption spectra and emission spectra, is investigated. With the increment of Al(PO3)(3) content, the thermal stability characterized by the gap of T-g and T,, increases first and then decreases, and reaches the maximum level containing 5 mol% Al(PO3)(3) content. The density and chemical durability decrease monotonously with the introduction of Al(PO3)(3) content increasing, while the refractive index and surface hardness increase. Above properties of fluorophosphate glasses are also compared with fluoride glasses and phosphate glasses. The Judd-Ofelt parameters, absorption and emission cross sections are discussed based on the absorption spectra of Tm-doped glasses. The emission spectra are also measured and the 1.8 mu m fluorescence of the sample is obvious indicating that it is suitable to 2 mu m application. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

通过优化熔融条件和玻璃组份,成功开发出一种新的Er^3+/Yb^3+共掺磷酸盐玻璃,其在沸水和熔盐中均表现出很好的化学稳定性。通过分析室温下Er^3+/Yb^3+共掺磷酸盐玻璃的吸收光谱,计算得到了Er^3+离子在波长1533nm处的峰值发射截面和杜得-奥菲而特强度参数;其中Er^3+离子在波长1533nm处的峰值发射截面为0.72×10^20cm^2,大于Schott的IOG1玻璃中Er^3+离子的峰值发射截面0.67×10^-20cm^2。通过改变离子交换的条件,获得了1.55μm单模光波导的制作条件

Coatings with layer structures of Ag/glass, Ag/Cr/glass, and Ag/Cr-Ag/Cr/glass deposited with magnetron sputtering are investigated. The results indicate that the performance for reflectance, hardness, adherence, and humidity durability of the silver coatings with Ag/Cr/glass and Ag/Cr-Ag/Cr/glass structures are better than pure silver film. In addition, the silver coatings with an Ag/Cr-Ag/glass structure present more advantages than that of the Ag/Cr/glass. Reasons are analyzed accordingly. Recentemente, vem sendo desenvolvido o uso de catalisadores de metais preciosos suportados por óxidos do tipo perovskita em automóveis. Tais sistemas catalíticos são conhecidos como catalisadores Inteligentes. A tecnologia dos catalisadores inteligentes aponta para um novo futuro na catálise automotiva e surge como um promissor substituinte para os catalisadores convencionais. O entendimento dos principais fatores que levam a auto regeneração destes catalisadores é um passo fundamental no processo de evolução desta tecnologia. O mecanismo de auto regeneração é responsável diretamente pelo aumento considerável do tempo de vida útil destes catalisadores perante aos convencionais. Consequentemente, o seu custo é bem mais baixo comparado ao convencional. Outro fator relevante é a durabilidade estrutural e o grande número de possibilidade de combinações possíveis das perovskita que fazem delas excelentes estruturas para estudo. O objetivo do trabalho é entender o processo auto regenerativo do catalisador automotivo a base de perovskita dopadas com um átomo de cobalto, manganês e níquel e quando expostas a um ambiente com uma molécula de NO e CO , através da análise da interação desses átomos dopantes em relação a estrutura da perovskita e como se comportará o átomo de paládio ao entrar em contato com a molécula de NO e CO

Sources of wastes in fishing operations mainly include bycatch discards; processing wastes where catch is processed onboard; plastic wastes due to abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear; bilges and other wastes from the vessel operations. Fishing systems in general have an associated catch of nontargeted organisms known as bycatch. Non-selective fishing gear that is not modified or equipped to exclude non-targeted organisms, may take a significant quantity of bycatch of non-targeted finfish, juvenile fish, benthic animals, marine mammals, marine birds and vulnerable or endangered species that are often discarded. Average annual global discards, has been estimated to be 7.3 million t, based on a weighted discard rate of 8%, during 1992-2001 period. Trawl fisheries for shrimp and demersal finfish account for over 50% of the total estimated global discards. Plastic materials are extensively used in fisheries, owing to their durability and other desirable properties, contributing to the efficiency and catchability of the fishing gear. However, plastics biodegrade at an extremely slow rate compared to other organic materials. Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) and related marine debris have been recognized as a critical problem in the marine environment and for living marine resources. Prevention of excess fishing capacity by appropriate management measures could lead to enormous savings in terms of fuel consumption, emissions and bycatch discards from the excess fishing fleet, capital and operational investments and labour deployment in capture fisheries, with significant economic gains. Os pisos industriais devem atender aos critérios de segurança, funcionalidade e durabilidade das estruturas de concreto. A fim de analisar o desempenho de placas de concreto apoiadas sobre base elástica quando submetidas a ações diretas e indiretas, foram elaborados diversos modelos analíticos e empíricos. Com o avanço tecnológico e o advento de softwares desenvolvidos através de processos numéricos como o método dos elementos finitos (MEF), a aplicação desses modelos foi facilitada. Este trabalho aborda os métodos de cálculo existentes e utilizados na execução dos projetos estruturais de pisos industriais de concreto.

Long-term living resource monitoring programs are commonly conducted globally to evaluate trends and impacts of environmental change and management actions. For example, the Woods Hole bottom trawl survey has been conducted since 1963 providing critical information on the biology and distribution of finfish and shellfish in the North Atlantic (Despres-Patango et al. 1988). Similarly in the Chesapeake Bay, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) Summer Blue Crab Trawl survey has been conducted continuously since 1977 providing management-relevant information on the abundance of this important commercial and recreational species. A key component of monitoring program design is standardization of methods over time to allow for a continuous, unbiased data set. However, complete standardization is not always possible where multiple vessels, captains, and crews are required to cover large geographic areas (Tyson et al. 2006). Of equal issue is technological advancement of gear which serves to increase capture efficiency or ease of use. Thus, to maintain consistency and facilitate interpretation of reported data in long-term datasets, it is imperative to understand and quantify the impacts of changes in gear and vessels on catch per unit of effort (CPUE). While vessel changes are inevitable due to ageing fleets and other factors, gear changes often reflect a decision to exploit technological advances. A prime example of this is the otter trawl, a common tool for fisheries monitoring and research worldwide. Historically, trawl nets were constructed of natural materials such as cotton and linen. However modern net construction consists of synthetic materials such as polyamide, polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene (Nielson et. al. 1983). Over the past several decades, polyamide materials which will be referred to as nylon, has been a standard material used in otter trawl construction. These trawls are typically dipped into a latex coating for increased abrasion resistance, a process that is referred to as “green dipped.” More recently, polyethylene netting has become popular among living resource monitoring agencies. Polyethylene netting, commonly known as sapphire netting, consists of braided filaments that form a very durable material more resistant to abrasion than nylon. Additionally, sapphire netting allows for stronger knot strength during construction of the net further increasing the net’s durability and longevity. Also, sapphire absorbs less water with a specific gravity near 0.91 allowing the material to float as compared to nylon with specific gravity of 1.14 (Nielson et. al. 1983). This same property results in a light weight net which is more efficient in deployment, retrieval and fishing of the net, particularly when towing from small vessels. While there are many advantages to the sapphire netting, no comparative efficiency data is available for these two trawl net types. Traditional nylon netting has been used consistently for decades by the MDDNR to generate long term living resource data sets of great value. However, there is much interest in switching to the advanced materials. In addition, recent collaborative efforts between MDNR and NOAA’s Cooperative Oxford Laboratory (NOAA-COL) require using different vessels for trawling in support of joint projects. In order to continue collaborative programs, or change to more innovative netting materials, the influence of these changes must be demonstrated to be negligible or correction factors determined. Thus, the objective of this study was to examine the influence of trawl net type, vessel type, and their interaction on capture efficiency.
