Gold-based catalysts have been of intense interests in recent years, being regarded as a new generation of catalysts due to their unusually high catalytic performance. For example, CO oxidation on Au/TiO2 has been found to occur at a temperature as low as 200 K. Despite extensive studies in the field, the microscopic mechanism of CO oxidation on Au-based catalysts remains controversial. Aiming to provide insight into the catalytic roles of Au, we have performed extensive density functional theory calculations for the elementary steps in CO oxidation on Au surfaces. O atom adsorption, CO adsorption, O-2 dissociation, and CO oxidation on a series of Au surfaces, including flat surfaces, defects and small clusters, have been investigated in detail. Many transition states involved are located, and the lowest energy pathways are determined. We find the following: (i) the most stable site for O atom on Au is the bridge site of step edge, not a kink site; (ii) O-2 dissociation on Au (O-2-->20(ad)) is hindered by high barriers with the lowest barrier being 0.93 eV on a step edge; (iii) CO can react with atomic O with a substantially lower barrier, 0.25 eV, on Au steps where CO can adsorb; (iv) CO can react with molecular O-2 on Au steps with a low barrier of 0.46 eV, which features an unsymmetrical four-center intermediate state (O-O-CO); and (v) O-2 can adsorb on the interface of Au/TiO2 with a reasonable chemisorption energy. On the basis of our calculations, we suggest that (i) O-2 dissociation on Au surfaces including particles cannot occur at low temperatures; (ii) CO oxidation on Au/inactive-materials occurs on Au steps via a two-step mechanism: CO+O-2-->CO2+O, and CO+O-->CO2; and (iii) CO oxidation on Au/active-materials also follows the two-step mechanism with reactions occurring at the interface.

Alloying metals is often used as an effective way to enhance the reactivity of surfaces. Aiming to shed light on the effect of alloying on reaction mechanisms, we carry out a comparative study of CO oxidation on Cu3Pt(111), Pt(111), and Cu(111) by means of density functional theory calculations. Alloying effects on the bonding sites and bonding energies of adsorbates, and the reaction pathways are investigated. It is shown that CO preferentially adsorbs on an atop site of Pt and O preferentially adsorbs on a fcc hollow site of three Cu atoms on Cu3Pt(111). It is also found that the adsorption energies of CO (or O-a) decreases on Pt (or Cu) on the alloy surface with respect to those on pure metals. More importantly, having identified the transition states for CO oxidation on those three surfaces, we found an interesting trend for the reaction barrier on the three surfaces. Similar to the adsorption energies, the reaction barrier on Cu3Pt possesses an intermediate value of those on pure Pt and Cu metals. The physical origin of these results has been analyzed in detail. Ruthenium is one of the poorest catalysts for CO oxidation under normal conditions (low or medium O coverage and normal temperature). However, a recent study [Science 285, 1042 (1999)] reveals that, under femtosecond laser irradiation, CO2 can be formed on the Ru surface, and the reaction follows an electron-mediated mechanism. We carried out density functional theory calculations to investigate CO oxidation via an electron-mediated mechanism on Ru(0001). By comparison to the reaction under normal conditions, following features emerge in the electron-mediated mechanism: (i) more reaction channels are open; (ii) the reaction barrier is significantly lowered. The physical origins for these novel features have been analyzed. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

We have performed density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on a close-packed transition metal surface, Pd(lll), and a more open surface, Pd(100), aiming to shed light on surface structure effects on reaction pathways and reactivity, an important issue in catalysis. Reaction pathways on both surfaces at two different coverages have been studied. It is found that the reaction pathways on both surfaces possess crucial common features despite the fact that they have different surface symmetries. Having determined reaction barriers in these systems, we find that the reaction on Pd(lll) is strongly coverage dependent. Surface coverages, however, have little effect on the reaction on Pd(100). Calculations also reveal that the low coverage reactions are structure sensitive while the medium coverage reactions are not. Detailed discussions on these results are given.

Throughout the last few decades, sulfate concentrations in streamwater have received considerable attention due to their dominant role in anthropogenic acidification of surface waters. The objectives of this study conducted in the Oldman River Basin in Alberta (Canada) were to determine the influence of geology, land use and anthropogenic activities on sources, concentrations and fluxes of riverine sulfate on a watershed scale. This was achieved by combining hydrological, chemical and isotopic techniques. Surface water samples were collected from the main stem and tributaries of the Oldman River on a monthly basis between December 2000 and March 2003 and analyzed for chemical and isotopic compositions. At a given sampling site, sulfate sources were primarily dependent on geology and did not vary with time or flow condition. With increasing flow distance a gradual shift from ?34S values > 10 ‰ and ?18O values > 0 ‰ of riverine sulfate indicating evaporite dissolution and soil-derived sulfate in the predominantly forested headwaters, to negative ?34S and ?18O values suggested that sulfide oxidation was the predominant sulfate source in the agriculturally used downstream part of the watershed. Significant increases in sulfate concentrations and fluxes with downstream distance were observed, and were attributed to anthropogenically enhanced sulfide oxidation due to the presence of an extensive irrigation drainage network with seasonally varying water levels. Sulfate-S exports in an artificially drained subbasin (64 kg S/ha/yr) were found to exceed those in a naturally drained subbasin (4 kg S/ha/yr) by an order of magnitude. Our dataset suggests that the naturally occurring process of sulfide oxidation has been enhanced in the Oldman River Basin by the presence of an extensive network of drainage and irrigation canals.

Biphenyl dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation of 2-chloroquinoline, 2-chloro-3-methylquinoline and 2-chloro-6-phenylpyridine substrates yielded the corresponding enantiopure cis-dihydrodiols; enantiopure 2,2'-bipyridines, synthesised in four steps from 2-chloroquinoline, proved to be efficient chiral ligands in catalytic asymmetric allylic oxidation and cyclopropanation reactions of alkenes.

The electrochemical oxidation of catechol and dopamine has been studied at a platinum micro-electrode (10 pm diameter) in two room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim][BE4]). For catechol in [C(2)mim][NTf2], an electrochemically quasi-reversible oxidation peak was observed at 1.1 V vs. Pt with a back peak at 0.4 V vs. Pt. This is assigned to the two-electron oxidation of catechol to doubly protonated o-benzoquinone. Double-step chronoamperometry gave a diffusion coefficient for the catechol and the oxidised species which is 3.8 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for both. For catechol in [C(4)mim][BF4], a two-electron oxidation wave was observed at 1.0 V vs. Pt with no back peak. Another peak at less positive potential was also observed at 0.6 V vs. Pt in [C(4)mim][BF4] but not in [C(2)mim][NTf2] which is assigned to the adsorption of electrochemically formed neutral o-benzoquinone on the platinum electrode. The oxidised protonated o-benzoquinone is suggested to be deprotonated by the [BF4](-) anion, but not by the [NTf2](-) anion: hence adsorption of the neutral species at the platinum electrode, not the charged species. For dopamine in both RTILs, two chemically irreversible oxidation peaks were observed at 0.75 V and 1.1 V vs. Pt, and assigned to the oxidation of dopamine to the corresponding semi-quinone and the quinone. Potential-step chronoamperometry was carried out on the oxidation waves of dopamine in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and the diffusion coefficient of species in solution was calculated to be 6.85 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and confirmed that the waves corresponded to one and two electron processes. A third wave was observed at 1.8 V vs. Pt which is attributed to the oxidation of the amine group to a radical cation with likely subsequent follow up chemistry. In [C(4)mim][BF4] a peak at less positive potential was observed for dopamine, similar to catechol which is assigned to the adsorption of the neutral quinone species on the platinum electrode formed by the reaction of the removal of protons from the oxidised dopamine with the [BF4](-) anion. There is a need to develop effective catalytic methods for alcohol oxidation. Pd(II) complexes have shown great promise as catalysts, however a comparatively small number of ligands have been reported so far. Herein we report the use of commercially available anionic N,O-ligands to produce highly active catalysts.

Determination of metal oxidation state under relevant working conditions is crucial to understand catalytic behaviour. The reduction behaviour of Pt and Re was evaluated simultaneously as a function of support and solvent in a pressurized reactor (autoclave). The bimetallic catalysts are used in selective hydrogenation of carboxylic acids and amides. Gas phase reduction reduced the metals more efficiently, in particular Pt.

The sonochemical oxidation efficiency (eta(ox)) of a commercial titanium alloy ultrasound horn has been measured using potassium iodide as a dosimeter at its main resonance frequency (20 kHz) and two higher resonance frequencies (41 and 62 kHz). Narrow power and frequency ranges have been chosen to minimise secondary effects such as changing bubble stability, and time available for radical diffusion from the bubble to the liquid. The oxidation efficiency, eta(ox), is proportional to the frequency and to the power transmitted to the liquid (275 mL) in the applied power range (1-6 W) under argon. Luminol radical visualisation measurements show that the radical generation rate increases and a redistribution of radical producing zones is achieved at increasing frequency. Argon, helium, air, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide have been used as saturation gases in potassium iodide oxidation experiments. The highest eta(ox) has been observed at 5 W under air at 62 kHz. The presence of carbon dioxide in air gives enhanced nucleation at 41 and 62 kHz and has a strong influence on eta(ox). This is supported by the luminol images, the measured dependence of eta(ox). on input power, and bubble images recorded under carbon dioxide. The results give insight into the interplay between saturation gas and frequency, nucleation, and their effect on eta(ox). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The oxidation of six charged iron(III) tetraarylporphyrins with chemical oxidants has been investigated. In aqueous solution each can be converted by tert-butyl hydroperoxide or monopersulphate into its corresponding oxoiron(IV) porphyrin, whereas in methanol only the iron(III) tetra(N-methylpyridyl)porphyrins form detectable ferryl porphyrins at ambient temperatures. On standing, the iron species revert to the parent porphyrin with a small loss due to non-reversible oxidative destruction. That the oxidised porphyrin intermediates are oxoiron(IV) species has been determined using UV-VIS, resonance Raman, H1 NMR and EPR spectroscopy.

Selected strains of the bacterium Pseudomonas putida (previously shown to effect dioxygenase-catalysed asymmetric cis-dihydroxylation of alkenes) have been found to yield chiral sulfoxides from the corresponding sulfides with a strong preference for the (R)- or (S)-configurations but without evidence of sulfone formation; similar results obtained using an Escherichia coli clone (pKST11, containing the Tod C1 C2 B and A genes encoding toluene dioxygenase from P. putida NCIMB 11767) are again consistent with a stereoselective dioxygenase-catalysed sulfoxidation.

The present work is focused on the demonstration of the advantages of miniaturized reactor systems which are essential for processes where potential for considerable heat transfer intensification exists as well as for kinetic studies of highly exothermic reactions at near-isothermal conditions. The heat transfer characteristics of four different cross-flow designs of a microstructured reactor/heat-exchanger (MRHE) were studied by CFD simulation using ammonia oxidation on a platinum catalyst as a model reaction. An appropriate distribution of the nitrogen flow used as a coolant can decrease drastically the axial temperature gradient in the reaction channels. In case of a microreactor made of a highly conductive material, the temperature non-uniformity in the reactor is strongly dependent on the distance between the reaction and cooling channels. Appropriate design of a single periodic reactor/heat-exchanger unit, combined with a non-uniform inlet coolant distribution, reduces the temperature gradients in the complete reactor to less than 4degreesC, even at conditions corresponding to an adiabatic temperature rise of about 1400degreesC, which are generally not accessible in conventional reactors because of the danger of runaway reactions. To obtain the required coolant flow distribution, an optimization study was performed to acquire the particular geometry of the inlet and outlet chambers in the microreactor/heat-exchanger. The predicted temperature profiles are in good agreement with experimental data from temperature sensors located along the reactant and coolant flows. The results demonstrate the clear potential of microstructured devices as reliable instruments for kinetic research as well as for proper heat management in the case of highly exothermic reactions.
