Iron(II) complexes of 1-phenyl-2,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone (antipyrine, Apy) and pyridine N-oxide (PyO), having the formulae [Fe(Apy)6](ClO4)2, Fe(Apy)2Cl2, Fe(Apy)2Br2, Fe(Apy)4I2, [Fe(PyO)3Cl3]2 . 2H2O, [Fe(PyO)Cl2 . 2H2O]2, [Fe(PyO)3Br2]2 and [Fe(PyO)6]I2 have been prepared and characterized. [Fe(Apy)6](ClO4)2 in nitrobenzene and [Fe(PyO)6]I2 in acetonitrile behave as 1:2 electrolytes; Fe(Apy)4I2 shows considerable dissociation while Fe(Apy)2Cl2 and Fe(Apy)2Br2 are non-electrolytes and monomeric in nitrobenzene. [Fe(PyO)3Cl2]2 . 2H2O and [Fe(PyO)3Br2]2 in nitrobenzene and [Fe(PyO)Cl2 . 2H2O]2 in acetonitrile behave as non-electrolytes. All the complexes are spin-free. The i.r. spectra show that the oxygens of the CO and NO groups are the donors in the Apy and PyO complexes. A large decrease in the NO stretching frequency in [Fe(PyO)Cl2. 2H2O]2 suggests PyO acts as a bridge forming a binuclear complex. The chloro and the bromo complexes of Apy have been assigned pseudo tetrahedral structures while the rest of the complexes have octahedral or near octahedral configurations around the iron(II) on the basis of the magnetic moments and the electronic transitions.

4,4prime-Bipyridyl (4,4prime-bipy) complexes of ferrous salts of the Fe(4,4prime-bipy)x(anion)y type (where x or y=1 or 2) and of ferric salts of the Fe(4,4prime-bipy)m(anion)n type (where m=1 or 2 and n=3) have been synthesised. Elemental analyses, i.r. and electronic spectra, magnetic and Mössbauer studies have been performed to characterize the complexes. 4,4prime-Bipy and some anions are inferred to act as bridging ligands. The magnetic moments, electronic and Mössbauer spectra suggest that the complexes are of high spin type with distorted octahedral structures. The value of the isomer shift and quadrupole splitting are discussed in terms of bonding of the ligand and anions.

The formation of crystalline diamond films from amorphous diamond-like carbon films by pulsed laser irradiation with a 300 μs non-Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been established by a combined study of transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical resistivity. The films have been prepared by glow discharge decomposition of a mixture of propane, n-butane, and hydrogen in a rf plasma operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. Prior to laser irradiation, the films have been found to be amorphous by transmission electron microscope studies. After irradiation, the electron diffraction patterns clearly point out the formation of cubic diamond structure with a lattice spacing of 3.555 Å. However, the close similarity between diamond and graphite electron diffraction patterns could sometimes be misleading regarding the formation of a diamond structure, and hence, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been carried out to confirm the results. A chemical shift in the C 1s core level binding energies towards higher values, viz., from 286.5 to 287.8 eV after laser irradiation, and a high electrical resistivity >1013 Ω cm are consistent with the growth of diamond structure. This novel "low-temperature, low-pressure" synthesis of diamond films offers enormous potential in terms of device compatibility with other solid-state devices.

Implications of nanostructuring and conductive carbon interface on lithium insertion/removal capacity and insertion kinetics innanoparticles of anatase polymorph of titania is discussed here.Sol-gel synthesized nanoparticles of titania (particle size similar to 6 nm) were hydrothermally coated ex situ with a thin layer of amorphous carbon (layer thickness: 2-5 nm) and calcined at a temperature much higher than the sol-gel synthesis temperature. The carbon-titania composite particles (resulting size similar to 10 nm) displayed immensely superior cyclability and rate capability (higher current rates similar to 4 g(-1)) compared to unmodified calcined anatase titania. The conductive carbon interface around titania nanocrystal enhances the electronic conductivity and inhibits crystallite growth during electrochemical insertion/removal thus preventing detrimental kinetic effects observed in case of unmodified anatase titania. The carbon coating of the nanoparticles also stabilized the titania crystallographic structure via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. This resulted in a decrease in the irreversible capacity observed in the case of nanoparticles without any carbon coating.

On hydrogenation of the Laves phase SmFe2, an amorphous SmFe2H3.6 (a-SmFe2H3.6) alloy was formed between 400 K and 500 K. The amorphous nature of the alloy was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and thermal analysis. However, SmFe2 absorbed hydrogen in the crystal state below 350 K and decomposed into SmH2 and α-Fe above 550 K. The crystallization behaviour of a-SmFe2H3.6 was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in combination with electron microscopy. Even after considerable hydrogen desorption (Image ) by an endothermic reaction on heating, the amorphous state was retained. Crystallization of a-SmFe2H3.6 took place in two stages. The first stage involved the precipitation of α-Fe in the amorphous matrix. The second stage involved the decomposition of the remaining amorphous phase into the equilibrium phases SmH2 and SmFe2.

Iron is a major pollutant released as a by-product during several industrial operations especially during acid mining of metal ores. In this paper, the use of Bengal gram husk (husk of channa dal, Cicer arientinum) in the biosorption of Fe(III) from aqueous solutions is discussed. Parameters like agitation time, adsorbent dosage and pH were studied at different Fe(Ill) concentrations. The adsorption data fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacity (q(max)) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 72.16 mg of Fe(III)/g of the biosorbent at an initial pH of 2.5. Desorption Studies were performed at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid showing that quantitative recovery of the metal ion is possible. The infrared spectra of the biomass before and after treatment with Fe(III), revealed that hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide bonds are involved in the uptake of Fe(III) ions.

The development of high-quality tin monosulphide (SnS) layers is one of the crucial tasks in the fabrication of efficient SnS-based optoelectronic devices. Reduction of strain between film and the substrate by using an appropriate lattice-matched (LM) substrate is a new attempt for the growth of high-quality layers. In this view, the SnS films were deposited on LM Al substrate using the thermal evaporation technique with a low rate of evaporation. The as-grown SnS films were characterized using appropriate techniques and the obtained results are discussed by comparing them with the properties of SnS films grown on amorphous substrate under the same conditions. From structural analysis of the films, it is noticed that the SnS films deposited on amorphous substrate have crystallites that were oriented along different directions. However, the SnS crystallites grown on Al substrate exhibited epitaxial growth along the 101] direction. Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman studies reveal that the films grown on Al substrate have better optical properties than those of the films grown on amorphous substrates. In this study the over 350 macrofossil samples, containing over 2300 charred plant remains from an Iron Age settlement containing fossil fields in Mikkeli Orijärvi Kihlinpelto, were studied archaeobotanically. The aim was to get more information about subsistence strategies, especially agriculture and study differences in the plant combinations in the different structures and use the archaeobotanical theory to interpret these structures. The methodological question was to study the taphonomy of the charred plant material. The results gave a diverse impression of the agriculture and subsistence strategies of the settlement in Orijärvi, where barley was the most important cereal with rye, wheat and oat cultivated as minor crops. The arable weed assemblage indicates that the fields were situated in different kinds of soils and the crops were cultivated when different kind of weather conditions were prevailing. Ergot was found with the cereals, and it was growing on some of the arable crops and it also indicates wet climate. Hemp and flax were cultivated and wild plants were collected. The meadow and wetland plants found in the material derive most probably from animal fodder. Tubers of bulbous oat-grass were interesting, because they are usually found in graves. Comparison with other Iron Age settlements and graves indicates that the plant material found from the ancient field layers derives most probably from dwellings and graves, which were taken into cultivation.

The influence of concentration and size of sp (2) cluster on the transport properties and electron field emissions of amorphous carbon films have been investigated. The observed insulating to metallic behaviour from reduced activation energy derived from transport measurement and threshold field for electron emission of a-C films can be explained in terms of improvements in the connectivity between sp (2) clusters. The connectivity is resulted by the cluster concentration and size. The concentration and size of sp (2) content cluster is regulated by the coalescence of carbon globules into clusters, which evolves with deposition conditions.
