Spray deposition of exfoliated MoS2 flakes as hole transport layer in perovskite-based photovoltaics
Resumo:
We propose the use of solution-processed molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) flakes as hole transport layer (HTL) for metal-organic perovskite solar cells. MoS2 bulk crystals are exfoliated in 2-propanol and deposited on perovskite layers by spray coating. We fabricated cells with glass/FTO/compact-TiO2/mesoporous-TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3/spiro- OMeTAD/Au structure and cells with the same structure but with MoS2 flakes as HTL instead of spiro-OMeTAD, the most widely used HTL. The electrical characterization of the cells with MoS2 as HTL show promising power conversion efficiency -η- of 3.9% with respect to cells with pristine spiro-OMeTAD (η=3.1%). Endurance test on 800-hour shelf life has shown higher stability for the MoS2–based cells (ΔPCE/PCE=-17%) with respect to the doped spiro-OMeTAD-based one (ΔPCE/PCE =-45%). Further improvements are expected with the optimization of the MoS2 deposition process

A computer code is developed for the numerical prediction of natural convection in rectangular two-dimensional cavities at high Rayleigh numbers. The governing equations are retained in the primitive variable form. The numerical method is based on finite differences and an ADI scheme. Convective terms may be approximated with either central or hybrid differencing for greater stability. A non-uniform grid distribution is possible for greater efficiency. The pressure is dealt with via a SIMPLE type algorithm and the use of a fast elliptic solver for the solenoidal velocity correction field significantly reduces computing times. Preliminary results indicate that the code is reasonably accurate, robust and fast compared with existing benchmarks and finite difference based codes, particularly at high Rayleigh numbers. Extension to three-dimensional problems and turbulence studies in similar geometries is readily possible and indicated.

Sensing characteristics of few-layer graphenes for NO2 and humidity have been investigated with graphene samples prepared by the thermal exfoliation of graphitic oxide, conversion of nanodiamond (DG) and arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen (HG). The sensitivity for NO2 is found to be highest with DG. Nitrogen-doped HG (n-type) shows increased sensitivity for NO2 compared with pure HG. The highest sensitivity for humidity is observed with HG. Sensing characteristics of graphene have been examined for different aliphatic alcohols and the sensitivity is found to vary with the chain length and branching.

The downlink scheduling problem in multi-queue multi-server systems under channel uncertainty is considered. Two policies that make allocations based on predicted channel states are proposed. The first is an extension of the well-known dynamic backpressure policy to the uncertain channel case. The second is a variant that improves delay performance under light loads. The stability region of the system is characterised and the first policy is argued to be throughput optimal. A recently proposed policy of Kar et al [1] has lesser complexity, but is shown to be throughput suboptimal. Further, simulations demonstrate better delay and backlog properties for both our policies at light loads.

Controlling the morphological structure of titanium dioxide (TiO 2) is crucial for obtaining superior power conversion efficiency for dye-sensitized solar cells. Although the sol-gel-based process has been developed for this purpose, there has been limited success in resisting the aggregation of nanostructured TiO2, which could act as an obstacle for mass production. Herein, we report a simple approach to improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) by controlling the degree of aggregation and particle surface charge through zeta potential analysis. We found that different aqueous colloidal conditions, i.e., potential of hydrogen (pH), water/titanium alkoxide (titanium isopropoxide) ratio, and surface charge, obviously led to different particle sizes in the range of 10-500 nm. We have also shown that particles prepared under acidic conditions are more effective for DSSC application regarding the modification of surface charges to improve dye loading and electron injection rate properties. Power conversion efficiency of 6.54%, open-circuit voltage of 0.73 V, short-circuit current density of 15.32 mA/cm2, and fill factor of 0.73 were obtained using anatase TiO 2 optimized to 10-20 nm in size, as well as by the use of a compact TiO2 blocking layer.

Y2SiO5 is a promising candidate for oxidation-resistant or environmental/thermal barrier coatings (ETBC) due to its excellent high-temperature stability, low elastic modulus and low oxygen permeability. In this paper, we investigated the thermal properties of Y2SiO5 comprehensively, including thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and thermal conductivity. It is interesting that Y2SiO5 has a very low thermal conductivity (∼1.40 W/m K) but a relatively high linear thermal expansion coefficient ((8.36 ± 0.5) × 10-6 K-1), suggesting compatible thermal and mechanical properties to some non-oxide ceramics and nickel superalloys as ETBC layer. Y2SiO5 is also an ideal EBC on YSZ TBC layer due to their close thermal expansion coefficients. As a continuous source of Y3+, it is predicted that Y2SiO5 EBC may prolong the lifetime of zirconia-based TBC by stopping the degradation aroused by the loss of Y stabilizer.

The Kachchh region of Gujarat, India bore the brunt of a disastrous earthquake of magnitude M-w=7.6 that occurred on January 26, 2001. The major cause of failure of various structures including earthen dams was noted to be the presence of liquefiable alluvium in the foundation soil. Results of back-analysis of failures of Chang, Tappar, Kaswati and Rudramata earth dams using pseudo-static limit equilibrium approach presented in this paper confirm that the presence of liquefiable layer contributed to lesser factors of safety leading to a base type of failure that was also observed in the field. Following the earthquake, earth dams have been rehabilitated by the concerned authority and it is imperative that the reconstructed sections of earth dams be reanalyzed. It is also increasingly realized that risk assessment of dams in view of the large-scale investment made and probabilistic analysis is necessary. In this study, it is demonstrated that the probabilistic approach when used in conjunction with deterministic approach helps in providing a rational solution for quantification of safety of the dam and in the estimation of risk associated with the dam construction. Field-effect transistor characteristics of few-layer graphenes prepared by several methods have been investigated in comparison with those of single-layer graphene prepared by the in situ reduction of single-layer graphene oxide. Ambipolar features have been observed with single-layer graphene and n-type behaviour with all the few-layer graphenes, the best characteristics being found with the graphene possessing 2-3 layers prepared by arc-discharge of graphite in hydrogen. FETs based on boron and nitrogen doped graphene show n-type and p-type behaviour respectively. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We demonstrate a top-gated field effect transistor made of a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayer (graphene) by dielectrophoresis. The Raman spectrum of RGO flakes of typical size of 5 mu m x 5 mu m shows a single 2D band at 2687 cm(-1), characteristic of single-layer graphene. The two-probe current-voltage measurements of RGO flakes, deposited in between the patterned electrodes with a gap of 2.5 mu m using ac dielectrophoresis, show ohmic behavior with a resistance of similar to 37 k Omega. The temperature dependence of the resistance (R) of RGO measured between 305 K and 393 K yields a temperature coefficient of resistance [dR/dT]/R similar to -9.5 x 10(-4)/K, the same as that of mechanically exfoliated single-layer graphene. The field-effect transistor action was obtained by electrochemical top-gating using a solid polymer electrolyte (PEO + LiClO4) and Pt wire. The ambipolar nature of graphene flakes is observed up to a doping level of similar to 6 x 10(12)/cm(2) and carrier mobility of similar to 50 cm(2)/V s. The source-drain current characteristics show a tendency of current saturation at high source-drain voltage which is analyzed quantitatively by a diffusive transport model. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Recent trends in the use of dispersed solid electrolytes and auxiliary electrodes in galvanic cells have increased the need for assessment of materials compatibility. In the design of dispersed solid electrolytes, the potential reactions between the dispersoid and the matrix must be considered. In galvanic cells, possible interactions between the dispersoid and the electrode materials must also be considered in addition to ion exchange between the matrix and the electrode. When auxiliary electrodes, which convert the chemical potential of a component present at the electrode into an equivalent chemical potential of the neutral form of the migrating species in the solid electrolyte are employed, displacement reactions between phases in contact may limit the range of applicability of the cell. Examples of such constraints in the use of oxide dispersoids in fluoride solid electrolytes and NASICON/Na2S couple for measurement of sulphur potential are illustrated with the aid of Ellingham and stability field diagrams.

Phase diagram studies show that at ambient pressure only one ternary oxide, Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5), is stable in the ternary systems Cu-Ln-O (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) at high temperatures. The crystal structure of Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5) can be described as a zig-zag arrangement of one-dimensional Cu2O5 chains parallel to-the a-axis with Ln atoms occupying distorted octahedral sites between these chains. Four sets of emf measurements on Gibbs energy of formation of Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5) (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu; Y) from component binary oxides and one set of high-temperature solution calorimetric data on enthalpy of formation have been reported in the literature. Except for Cu2Y2O5, the measured values for the Gibbs energies of formation of all other Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5) compounds fall in a narrow band (+/-1 kJ mol(-1)) and indicate a regular increase in stability with decreasing ionic radius of the lanthanide ion. The values for the second law enthalpy of formation, derived from the temperature dependence of emf obtained in different studies, show larger differences, as high as 25 kJ mol(-1) for Cu2Tm2O5. Though associated with an uncertainty of +/-4 kJ mol(-1), the calorimetric measurements help to identify the best set of emf data. The trends in thermodynamic data correlate well with the global instability index (GII) based on the overall deviation from the valence sum rule. Low values for the index calculated from crystallographic information indicate higher stability. Higher values are indicative of the larger stress in the structure.

Recent experimental investigations of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the systems M-Pb-O, where M = Ca, Sr or Ba, indicate a regular increase in thermodynamic stability of ternary oxides, MPbO3 and M2PbO4, with increasing basicity of the oxide of the alkaline-earth metal. Number of stable interoxide compounds at 1100 K in the systems M-Pb-O (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) increases in unit increments from Mg to Ba. In this paper, experimentally determined standard Gibbs energies of formation of M2PbO4 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) and MPbO3 (M = Sr, Ba) from their component binary monoxides and oxygen gas are combined with an estimated value for CaPbO3 to delineate systematic trends in thermodynamic stability of the ternary oxides. The trends are interpreted using concepts of tolerance factor and acid-base interactions. All the ternary oxides in these systems contain lead in the tetravalent state. The small Pb4+ ions polarize the surrounding oxygen ions and cause the formation of oxyanions which are acidic in character. Hence, the higher oxidation state of lead is stabilized in the presence of basic oxides of alkaline-earth group. A schematic subsolidus temperature-composition phase diagram is presented for the system BaO-PbO-O-2 to illustrate the change in oxidation states in binary and ternary oxides with temperature.

Dodecylsulphate-intercalated zinc hydroxysalt, Zn-5(OH)(8)(DS)(2)center dot mH(2)O delaminates to give monolayer colloidal dispersions in alcohols such as 1-butanol and ethylene glycol. The extent of delamination and the stability of the colloidal dispersion are comparable to those of layered double hydroxides. The solvothermal decomposition of the colloidal dispersion of the hydroxysalt in ethylene glycol yields a bimodal ZnO having a nanotubular structure decorated with nanosheets. The short‐circuit current density (Jsc) of indium tin oxide (ITO/silicon solar cells has been shown both theoretically and experimentally to be a function of the thickness of the ion beam sputtered ITO layer. These results can be accounted for by computing the optical reflection from the ITO/silicon interface.
On the evaluation of stability of rare earth oxides as face coats for investment casting of titanium
Resumo:
Attempts have been made to evaluate the thermal stability of rare earth oxide face coats against liquid titanium. Determination of microhardness profiles and concentration profiles of oxygen and metallic constituents of oxide in investment cast titanium rods has allowed grActation of relative stability of rare earth oxides. The relative stability of evaluated oxides in the order of increasing stability follows the sequence CeO2 — ZrO2 — Gd2O3 — didymium oxide — Sm2O3 —Nd2O3 — Y2O3. The grading does not follow the free energy data of the formation of these oxides. A better correlation with the experimental observations is obtained when the solubility of the metallic species in titanium is also taken into consideration.
