A range of side chain liquid crystal copolymers have been prepared using mesogenic and non-mesogenic units. It is found that high levels of the non-mesogenic moieties may be introduced without completely disrupting the organization of the liquid crystal phase. Incorporation of this comonomer causes a marked reduction in the glass transition temperature (Tg), presumably as a result of enhanced backbone mobility and a corresponding lowering of the nematic transition temperature, thereby restricting the temperature range for stability of the liquid crystal phase. The effect of the interactions between the various components of these side-chain polymers on their electro-optic responses is described. Infrared (i.r.) dichroism measurements have been made to determine the order parameters of the liquid crystalline side-chain polymers. By identifying a certain band (CN stretching) in the i.r. absorption spectrum, the order parameter of the mesogenic groups can be obtained. The temperature and composition dependence of the observed order parameter are related to the liquid crystal phase transitions and to the electro-optic response. It is found that the introduction of the non-mesogenic units into the polymer chain lowers the threshold voltage of the electro-optic response over and above that due to the reduction in the order parameter. The dynamic electro-optic responses are dominated by the temperature-dependent viscosity and evidence is presented for relaxation processes involving the polymer backbone which are on a time scale greater than that for the mesogenic side-chain units.

We discuss some novel technologies that enable the implementation of shearing interferometry at the terahertz part of the spectrum. Possible applications include the direct measurement of lens parameters, the measurement of refractive index of materials that are transparent to terahertz frequencies, determination of homogeneity of samples, measurement of optical distortions and the non-contact evaluation of thermal expansion coefficient of materials buried inside media that are opaque to optical or infrared frequencies but transparent to THz frequencies. The introduction of a shear to a Gaussian free-space propagating terahertz beam in a controlled manner also makes possible a range of new encoding and optical signal processing modalities.

The absorption spectra of phytoplankton in the visible domain hold implicit information on the phytoplankton community structure. Here we use this information to retrieve quantitative information on phytoplankton size structure by developing a novel method to compute the exponent of an assumed power-law for their particle-size spectrum. This quantity, in combination with total chlorophyll-a concentration, can be used to estimate the fractional concentration of chlorophyll in any arbitrarily-defined size class of phytoplankton. We further define and derive expressions for two distinct measures of cell size of mixed populations, namely, the average spherical diameter of a bio-optically equivalent homogeneous population of cells of equal size, and the average equivalent spherical diameter of a population of cells that follow a power-law particle-size distribution. The method relies on measurements of two quantities of a phytoplankton sample: the concentration of chlorophyll-a, which is an operational index of phytoplankton biomass, and the total absorption coefficient of phytoplankton in the red peak of visible spectrum at 676 nm. A sensitivity analysis confirms that the relative errors in the estimates of the exponent of particle size spectra are reasonably low. The exponents of phytoplankton size spectra, estimated for a large set of in situ data from a variety of oceanic environments (~ 2400 samples), are within a reasonable range; and the estimated fractions of chlorophyll in pico-, nano- and micro-phytoplankton are generally consistent with those obtained by an independent, indirect method based on diagnostic pigments determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. The estimates of cell size for in situ samples dominated by different phytoplankton types (diatoms, prymnesiophytes, Prochlorococcus, other cyanobacteria and green algae) yield nominal sizes consistent with the taxonomic classification. To estimate the same quantities from satellite-derived ocean-colour data, we combine our method with algorithms for obtaining inherent optical properties from remote sensing. The spatial distribution of the size-spectrum exponent and the chlorophyll fractions of pico-, nano- and micro-phytoplankton estimated from satellite remote sensing are in agreement with the current understanding of the biogeography of phytoplankton functional types in the global oceans. This study contributes to our understanding of the distribution and time evolution of phytoplankton size structure in the global oceans.

We present a flexible framework to calculate the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols at a given relative humidity based on their composition and size distribution. The similarity of this framework to climate model parameterisations allows rapid and extensive sensitivity tests of the impact of uncertainties in data or of new measurements on climate relevant aerosol properties. The data collected by the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft during the EUCAARI-LONGREX and VOCALS-REx campaigns have been used in a closure study to analyse the agreement between calculated and measured aerosol optical properties for two very different aerosol types. The agreement achieved for the EUCAARI-LONGREX flights is within the measurement uncertainties for both scattering and absorption. However, there is poor agreement between the calculated and the measured scattering for the VOCALS-REx flights. The high concentration of sulphate, which is a scattering aerosol with no absorption in the visible spectrum, made the absorption measurements during VOCALS-REx unreliable, and thus no closure study was possible for the absorption. The calculated hygroscopic scattering growth factor overestimates the measured values during EUCAARI-LONGREX and VOCALS-REx by ∼30% and ∼20%, respectively. We have also tested the sensitivity of the calculated aerosol optical properties to the uncertainties in the refractive indices, the hygroscopic growth factors and the aerosol size distribution. The largest source of uncertainty in the calculated scattering is the aerosol size distribution (∼35%), followed by the assumed hygroscopic growth factor for organic aerosol (∼15%), while the predominant source of uncertainty in the calculated absorption is the refractive index of organic aerosol (28–60%), although we would expect the refractive index of black carbon to be important for aerosol with a higher black carbon fraction.

We report results on the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of SnO(2) obtained using first-principles calculations performed within the density functional theory. All the calculated phonon frequencies, real and imaginary parts of complex dielectric function, the energy-loss spectrum, the refractive index, the extinction, and the absorption coefficients show good agreement with experimental results. Based on our calculations, the SnO(2) electron and hole effective masses were found to be strongly anisotropic. The lattice contribution to the low-frequency region of the SnO(2) dielectric function arising from optical phonons was also determined resulting the values of E > (1aSyen) (latt) (0) = 14.6 and E > (1ayen) (latt) (0) = 10.7 for directions perpendicular and parallel to the tetragonal c-axis, respectively. This is in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. After adding the electronic contribution to the lattice contribution, a total average value of E >(1)(0) = 18.2 is predicted for the static permittivity constant of SnO(2).

The magnetic response of the near-band-edge optical properties is studied in EuTe layers. In several magneto-optical experiments, the absorption and emission are described as well as the related Stokes shift. Specifically, we present the first experimental report of the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum in Faraday configuration. The PLE spectra shows to be related with the absorption spectra through the observation of resonance between the excitation light and the zero-field band-gap. A new emission line appears at 1.6 eV at a moderate magnetic field in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Furthermore, we examine the absorption and PL red-shift induced by the magnetic field in the light of the d-f exchange interaction energy involved in these processes. Whereas the absorption red-shift shows a quadratic dependence on the field, the PL red-shift shows a linear dependence which is explained by spin relaxation of the excited state.

Ab initio calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) are used to investigate the electronic and optical properties of sillimanite. The geometrical parameters of the unit cell, which contain 32 atoms, have been fully optimized and are in good agreement with the experimental data. The electronic structure shows that sillimanite has an indirect band gap of 5.18 eV. The complex dielectric function and optical constants, such as extinction coefficient, refractive index, reflectivity and energy-loss spectrum, are calculated. The optical properties of sillimanite are discussed based on the band structure calculations. It is shown that the O-2p states and Al-3s, Si-3s states play the major role in optical transitions as initial and final states, respectively. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance and optical absorption properties of rhodonite, a natural silicate mineral, have been investigated and compared to those of synthetic crystal, pure and doped. The TL peaks grow linearly for radiation dose up to 4 kGy, and then saturate. In all the synthetic samples, 140 and 340 degrees C TL peaks are observed; the difference occurs in their relative intensities, but only 340 degrees C peak grows strongly for high doses. Al(2)O(3) and Al(2)O(3) + CaO-doped synthetic samples presented several decades intenser TL compared to that of synthetic samples doped with other impurities. A heating rate of 4 degrees C/s has been used in all the TL readings. The EPR spectrum of natural rhodonite mineral has only one huge signal around g = 2.0 with width extending from 1,000 to 6,000 G. This is due to Mn dipolar interaction, a fact proved by numerical calculation based on Van Vleck dipolar broadening expression. The optical absorption spectrum is rich in absorption bands in near-UV, visible and near-IR intervals. Several bands in the region from 540 to 340 nm are interpreted as being due to Mn(3+) in distorted octahedral environment. A broad and intense band around 1,040 nm is due to Fe(2+). It decays under heating up to 900 degrees C. At this temperature it is reduced by 80% of its original intensity. The pink, natural rhodonite, heated in air starts becoming black at approximately 600 degrees C.

The electronic and optical properties of grossular garnet are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experiment data. The electronic structure shows that grossular has a direct band gap of 5.22 eV. The dielectric functions, reflective index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity and energy-loss spectrum are calculated. The optical properties of grossular are discussed based on the band structure calculations. The O 2p states and Si 3s play a major role in these optical transitions as initial and final states, respectively. The absorption spectrum is localized in the ultraviolet range between 30 and 250 nm. Finally, we concluded that pure grossular crystal does not absorb radiation in the visible range. This study reports the results of ab initio electronic and optical calculations for pure socialite crystal using the linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within density functional theory (DFT). The calculated electronic structure revealed predominantly orbital characters of the valence band and the conduction band, and enabled us to determine the type and the value of the fundamental gap of the compound. The imaginary part of the dielectric tensor, extinction coefficient and refraction index were calculated as functions of the incident radiation wavelength. It is shown that the O 2p states and Na 3s states play the major role in optical transitions as initial and final states, respectively. The absorption spectrum is localized in the ultraviolet range between 40 and 250 nm. Furthermore, we concluded that the material does not absorb radiation in the visible range. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, Ba(Zr(0.25)Ti(0.75))O(3) ceramic was prepared by solid-state reaction. This material was characterized by x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy. The temperature dependent dielectric properties were investigated in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. The dielectric measurements indicated a diffuse phase transition. The broadening of the dielectric permittivity in the frequency range as well as its shifting at higher temperatures indicated a relaxor-like behaviour for this material. The diffusivity and the relaxation strength were estimated using the modified Curie-Weiss law. The optical properties were analysed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements at room temperature. The UV-vis spectrum indicated that the Ba(Zr(0.25)Ti(0.75))O(3) ceramic has an optical band gap of 2.98 eV. A blue PL emission was observed for this compound when excited with 350 nm wavelength. The polarity as well as the PL property of this material was attributed to the presence of polar [TiO(6)] distorted clusters into a globally cubic matrix.

This paper describes the structural evolution of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) nanopowders using two soft chemistry routes, the sol-gel and the polymeric precursor methods. Differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analyses, thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy techniques have been used to study the chemical reactions between 700 and 1200 degrees C temperature range. From both methods the Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) (Er:YAB) solid solution was obtained almost pure when the powdered samples were heat treated at 1150 degrees C. Based on the results, a schematic phase formation diagram of Er:YAB crystalline solid solution was proposed for powders from each method. The Er:YAB solid solution could be optimized by adding a small amount of boron oxide in excess to the Er:YAB nominal composition. The nanoparticles are obtained around 210 nm. Photoluminescence emission spectrum of the Er:YAB nanocrystalline powders was measured on the infrared region and the Stark components of the (4)I(13/2) and (4)I(15/2) levels were determined. Finally, for the first time the Raman spectrum of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) crystalline phase is also presented. (C) 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

We carried out experiments of induced birefringence via two-photon absorption in spin-coated films of the conjugated polymer poly[2-[ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl] -amino]-ethane (3-thienyl)ethanoate], PAzT, at 680 and 775 nm. This process allows recording in the bulk because of the spatial confinement of the bireffingence provided by the two-photon absorption. The induced birefringence is associated with molecular reorientation caused by the two-photon induced isomerization of the azochromophores attached to the polymer backbone. In addition, the two-photon absorption spectrum of PAzT was measured to help selecting the excitation wavelength for two-photon absorption induced birefringence. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Excited state absorption and excited state dynamics of indocyanine-green (ICG) dissolved in dymethyl sulfoxide were measured using white-light continuum Z-scan (WLCZScan) and white-light continuum pump-probe (WLCPP) techniques. The excited state absorption spectrum, obtained through Z-scan measurements, revealed saturable absorption (SA) for wavelengths longer than 630 nm, while reverse saturable absorption (RSA) appeared, as indicated by a band at approximately 570 nm. Both processes were modeled by a three-energy-level diagram, from which the excited state cross-section values were determined. SA and RSA were also observed in pump-probe experiments, with a recovery time in the hundreds of picoseconds time scale due to the long lifetime of the first excited state of ICG. Such results contribute to the understanding of ICG optical properties, allowing application in photonics and medicine. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
