This investigation was undertaken primarily as a problem in geologic mapping, coupled with a study of stratigraphy, glaciation, igneous phenomena, and structure. The area is admirably suited to a study of geology and geologic events. Because it is small in extent, the area was studied in some detail during the time which was devoted to field work. The record of igneous activity of past geological ages is remarkably well exposed, since Lost Creek Canyon was carved through the roof of a stock or batholith by the glaciers of the Pleistocene epoch.

Background research consisted of a hospital case series of all adult burn patients (n = 162) admitted to John Sealy Hospital's burn unit from January 1978 to June 1979. Comparisons between occupationally and nonoccupationally burned adults demonstrated that occupationally burned adults were significantly more likely to have been active in the burn injury event and to have changed jobs during the prior year. They were significantly less likely to have physical or mental problems which contributed to sustaining the burn injury. Comparisons between occupational and nonoccupational burn injury events concluded that occupational burn injury events were significantly more likely to involve multiple sources of energy, sparks as the source of ignition and gases as the source of combustion. Other salient characteristics of occupational burn injuries indicated that subsequent research should focus upon lost workday occupational burns and other injuries sustained by blue-collar petrochemical workers employed in Galveston County, Texas.^ Subsequent research consisted of a historical cohort study of occupational injuries sustained in 1979 by a cohort of blue-collar petrochemical workers (n = 1771) who belonged to O.C.A.W. Local 4-449 in Texas City, Texas. Specific cohort injury rates included 15.08 occupational injuries per 100 person work-years, 11.98 lost workday occupational injuries per 100 person work-years, and 1.64 lost workday occupational burn injuries per 100 person work-years. Salient results from this study indicate that burn injuries are a very important type (in terms of both frequency and severity) of occupational injury sustained by blue-collar petrochemical workers, pipefitters are at greatest risk of lost workday injuries and lost workday burn injuries, company-specific experiences are comparable for lost workday occupational injuries, differences among company-specific nonlost workday occupational injury experiences may not be "safety-related", and minimal job-specific experience may not place employees at greater risk of lost workday burn injuries.^

El tema objeto de esta Tesis, el Fragmento y la Abstracción, es una propuesta de análisis sobre el diálogo entre el fragmento como object trouvé y la abstracción, como un modo de proceder por parte del autor en el proyecto de arquitectura. En un principio, tal vez la creación artística nació como un intento por comprender la complejidad del mundo en que el ser humano vivía. Y se dedica a establecer un diálogo con el fragmento, a veces buscando su significado como parte de una historia desconocida, otras como parte de su propia historia pero también como referencia a una etapa mítica, convirtiéndose en símbolo de un paraíso perdido. El fragmento ha dado lugar al diálogo entre obra y autor tanto en música como en literatura o pintura. Esta tesis intenta analizar dicho diálogo en la arquitectura. Esta investigación comienza interrogándose sobre el sentido del fragmento y la abstracción como el modo de pensamiento leve, en definición de Italo Calvino, que nos permite conectar las ideas más alejadas. Para ello, se propusieron cinco modelos para explorar dicha relación. Los edificios elegidos fueron 1.- Villa Adriana 2.- Palacio de Carlos V en la Alhambra 3.- La casa- museo de Sir John Soane 4.- El Carmen de Rodríguez-Acosta 5.- Castelvecchio Dos de ellos residencies imperiales (1 y 2) Dos fortalezas (2 y5) Dos casas-estudio (3 y 4) Las cinco tienen relación con jardines De sus autores no todos son conocidos Tres de ellos se dedicaron a la docencia en arquitectura. Durante la investigación, para relacionar a unos y otros, se introdujo a Gian Battista Piranesi como importante nexo de unión entre antigüedad y modernidad. ABSTRACT The subject of this Thesis “Fragment and Abstraction, is a purpose of analysis about the dialogue between fragment as object trouvé and abstraction, as a way to do by the author in the architectural project. At first, we suppose historically that artistic creation is born as a way to understand the complexity of the world where the human beings lives. They tried to stablish a dialogue with the fragment, looking for its meaning, sometimes as the part of an unknown story, sometimes as part of their own history, but sometimes as reference of mythic times, becoming a symbol of a lost paradise. In arts, fragment is at beginning of many dialogues between craft and the author, as we know in music, literature or painting. This thesis try to analyze this dialogue in architecture. This investigation began asking for the meaning of fragment as something what was broken out from something we do not know, and abstraction as an immaterial way of thinking which let us connecting the most far ideas. Therefore, five architectural model were proposed, in order to explain that relationship. The chosen buildings were: 1- Villa Adriana 2- Charles V Imperator’s Palace at la Alhambra 3- Sir John Soane House -Museum 4- Rodríguez –Acostas’s Carmen 5- Castelvecchio by Carlo Scarpa There are: Two Imperial palaces (the 1st and 2nd), Two fortresses (the 2nd and 5th) Two House-Artist Studio (the 3rd and 4th) Five types of relationship with gardens. The authors, from them, we do not know some of them Three of the architects used to teach architecture All of them went to Rome Now the five buildings have become museum institution.During the investigation, in order to explain the relationship between them, I introduced Giambattista Piranesi as an important nexus to understand the transition from the antiquity to the modernity.

O objetivo dessa tese é aprofundar, a partir do discurso pós-colonial, uma crise na perspectiva teológica da libertação. Esta promoveu, na década de 1970, uma reviravolta nos estudos teológicos no terceiro mundo. Para tanto, leremos um conto de Gabriel García Márquez chamado “El ahogado más hermosodel mundo” (1968) analizando e avaliando as estratégias políticas e culturais ali inscritas. Para levar a frente tal avaliação é preciso ampliar o escopo de uma visão que divide o mundo em secular/religioso, ou em ideias/práticas religiosas e não religiosas, para dar passo a uma visão unificada que compreende a mundanalidade, tanto do que é catalogado como ‘religioso’ quanto do que se pretende ‘não religioso’. A teologia/ciências da religião, como discurso científico sobre a economia das trocas que lidam com visões, compreensões e práticas de mundo marcadas pelo reconhecimento do mistério que lhes é inerente, possuem um papel fundamental na compreensão, explicitação, articulação e disponibilização de tais forças culturais. A percepção de existirem elementos no conto que se relacionam com os símbolos sobre Jesus/Cristo nos ofereceu um vetor de análise; entretanto, não nos deixamos limitar pelos grilhões disciplinares que essa simbologia implica. Ao mesmo tempo, esse vínculo, compreendido desde a relação imperial/colonial inerente aos discursos e imagens sobre Jesus-Cristo, embora sem centralizar a análise, não poderia ficar intocado. Partimos para a construção de uma estrutura teórica que explicitasse os valores, gestos, e horizontes mundanos do conto, cristológicos e não-cristológicos, contribuindo assim para uma desestabilização dos quadros tradicionais a partir dos quais se concebem a teologia e as ciências da religião, a obra de García Márquez como literatura, e a geografia imperial/colonial que postula o realismo ficcional de territórios como “América Latina”. Abrimos, assim, um espaço de significação que lê o conto como uma “não-cristologia”, deslocando o aprisionamento disciplinar e classificatório dos elementos envolvidos na análise. O discurso crítico de Edward Said, Homi Bhabha e GayatriSpivak soma-se à prática teórica de teólogas críticas feministas da Ásia, da África e da América Latina para formular o cenário político emancipatório que denominaremos teologia crítica secular.
