The Lincoln Highway Association’s “Object Lesson:” The Seedling Mile in Linn County Iowa,

The Seedling Mile in Linn County, Iowa, was part of the Lincoln Highway Association’s so-called “object lesson” program that sought to graphically demonstrate, in the paving of selected one-mile demonstration sections, the benefits of concrete paving to improving road travel across the nation. Constructed in 1918-19, this Seedling Mile became much more than an object lesson and served as something of a battleground between two municipalities—Marion and Cedar Rapids—in their struggle over the county seat and their place on the Lincoln Highway. The Seedling Mile eventually became part of a continuously paved section of the Lincoln Highway between Chicago and Cedar Rapids, with the whole of the Lincoln Highway in Iowa paved in some fashion by the 1930s. In 2002, Linn County reconstructed Mt. Vernon Road from the City of Mt. Vernon to the west end of the Seedling Mile impacting the historic road section. An agreement between concerned government agencies resulted in this publication in partial mitigation of the impact to this historic road section under the guidelines of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Purposes of this Report: • Recommend the most logical and economical options to address state governmental space needs in the Polk County metropolitan area to the year 2010. • Include building size, location, phasing, financing, method of project delivery and estimated cost. • Develop a software tool to compare costs of leasing vs. ownership of space. Methodology: Identify: 1. Current amount and location of owned and leased space, by agency; 2. Types of space and whether best located on or off of the Capitol Complex; 3. Utilization of space, noting over-crowding and under-utilization; 4. Current number of workstations for full and part time employees, Personnel Employment Organization (PEO) workers, contractors, interns, etc.; and, 5. History of staff levels to assist in the prediction of staff growth. Scope: This report focuses on 10 state-owned buildings located on the Capitol Complex and 48 leased spaces in the Polk County metropolitan area. (See Figures 1 and 2.) • Due to a separate space study under way by the Legislature, implications of area and staff for the State Capitol building are included only for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, Secretary of State, Auditor and the Department of Management. • Because it is largely a museum building that does not have office space available for other agencies, the area and staff of the Historical Building are not fully addressed. • Only the parking implications of the new Judicial Building are included in this study because the building space is under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Branch and not available for other agencies. Several state-owned buildings are not included in the scope of this report, generally because they have highly focused purposes, and their space is not available for assignment to other agencies. Several leased locations are not included for similar reasons, including leases that do not fall within the authority of the Department of General Services.

Mississippi Drive (Iowa 92) from Main Street to the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge in Muscatine, Iowa, STP-U-5330(614)—27-70, Muscatine County, 2015

The proposed action consists of upgrading Mississippi Drive (Iowa Highway 92) through downtown Muscatine, Iowa. The Mississippi Drive Corridor Project begins south of the Main Street/Grandview Avenue intersection, continuing to the East 2nd Street/Norbert F. Beckey Bridge intersection, which marks the end of the project. It passes through a mix of commercial, residential, Central Business District and industrial land uses. The total length of the project is approximately 1.6 miles, including 19 intersections (6 with traffic signals). Refer to the vicinity map on Figure 1. The current roadway is a 3- to 4-lane, urban facility with both divided and undivided medians. The roadway, ranging from 40 to 64 feet wide, is considered difficult to cross for pedestrians, especially for small children or elderly. The width of this roadway is being considered to be narrowed to improve the accessibility to the downtown from the Mississippi River riverfront area by pedestrians. This project also includes accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians and measures to reduce flooding on the roadway.

Abrasion of Aggregates as Affected by Grading, 1970

Many specifications for coarse aggregates, that are to be used in highway construction, limit the percentage of wear when tested by AASHO T-96 "Resistance to Abrasion of Coarse Aggregate by use of the Los Angeles Machine". This test consists of placing a 5000 gram sample of the aggregate in a "hollow steel cylinder, closed at both ends, having an inside diameter of 28 inches and an inside length of 20 inches. The cylinder - - - shall be mounted in such a manner that it may be rotated with the axis in a horizontal position. - A removable steel shelf, projecting radially 3-1/2 inches into the cylinder and extending its full length, shall be mounted along one element of the interior surface of the cylinder."

Esta investigación se pregunta sobre las diferentes narrativas históricas que se han construido sobre la figura de los soldados rasos de la guerra de Corea, y por cómo ellos han generado estrategias en su relato que se ajustan a unos procesos históricos determinados.

Liderazgo, poder y calidad de vida profesional en un contexto hospitalario

El propósito de este estudio es describir la relación entre los estilos de liderazgo, la percepción que tiene el personal asistencial en relación con las tácticas de influencia y la percepción de la calidad de vida profesional de los trabajadores de un hospital de cuarto nivel de la ciudad de Bogotá. Para ello, se utilizaron tres instrumentos: MLQ -5X, IBQ y CVP35 respectivamente. Se encontraron relaciones positivas entre dos componentes de la calidad de vida profesional, asociaciones fuertes entre las tácticas de influencia que se caracterizan por basarse en el conocimiento como mediador en el trabajo y, en relación con los estilos de liderazgo, las tácticas de legitimación y presión se relacionan con el estilo transaccional.

La ambigüedad, las creencias y los estereotipos que rodean a lo que hoy en día se conoce como terrorismo: Una revisión de literatura

El terrorismo en la actualidad es considerado como uno de los conceptos más controversiales en los campos social, académico y político. El término se empieza a utilizar después de la Revolución Francesa, pero recientemente, a raíz de los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001, ha tomado suma relevancia y ha motivado numerosas investigaciones para tratar de entender qué es terrorismo. Aunque a la fecha existen varias revisiones sistemáticas, este trabajo tiene como propósito revisar, agrupar y concretar diferentes teorías y conceptos formulados por los autores que han trabajado sobre el concepto de “terrorismo” con el fin de entender las implicaciones de su utilización en el discurso, y cómo esto afecta la dinámica interna de las sociedades en relación con la violencia, las creencias, los estereotipos entre otros elementos. Para lograrlo, se revisaron 56 artículos, publicados entre los años 1985 y 2013; 10 fuentes secundarias entre noticias y artículos de periódicos correspondientes a los años 1995-2013 y 10 estudios estadísticos cuyos resultados nos aportan a la comprensión del tema en cuestión. La búsqueda se limitó al desarrollo histórico del terrorismo, sus diferentes dimensiones y el concepto social de la realidad de terrorismo. Los hallazgos demuestran que la palabra “terrorismo” constituye un concepto que como tal es un vehículo lingüístico que puede ser utilizado con fines, estratégicos movilizando al público conforme a través del discurso e intereses políticos, destacando la necesidad de estudiar las implicaciones psicológicas y sociales de su uso.

Este artículo se cuestiona sobre la posibilidad de fundamentación moral de las obligaciones políticas y de la legitimidad de la autoridad, dando una respuesta negativa. Así, se postula que no hay un deber moral de obediencia a la autoridad (política) a la vez que se propone, a partir de allí, una somera defensa del Estado de bienestar.

Estudio sobre integración, comportamiento, participación, grupos y liderazgo de los universitarios de los dos primeros cursos de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales de la Universidad de Barcelona.

Se presenta un estudio en cuanto al problema de integración que presentan los alumnos en los primeros cursos de facultad. Así, los alumnos de primer y segundo curso de carrera presentan desorientación, dudas, inadaptación, malos resultados. Se intenta estudiar la integración del alumno en la organización-facultad. Para ello, se redactó un cuestionario que considera aspectos de integración, de comportamiento y participación. La encuesta se realizó en 1984 a alumnos de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales, y se divide en cuatro partes: identificación de la muestra; cuestiones de integración y motivación; perfil de integración y comportamiento; y cuestionario sobre los criterios por los que se mueven para ir a clase. Se comprueba que, a lo largo de la encuesta, los alumnos en los dos primeros cursos de facultad presentan problemas de integración, sobre todo, en el segundo curso, que es cuando se sienten menos integrados, más dubitativos, más escépticos y menos claros en sus motivaciones.

Mediante la solicitud de ingreso se analiza el número de hombres y mujeres;sus edades; motivos de ingreso; canales de ingreso;procedencia y situación familiar; nivel cultural. La falta de actividades socio-culturales y recreativas tiene relación con bajo nivel de comunicación interpersonal entre ancianos.Igualmente se mantiene mínima relación entre los ancianos y sus familias . Se manifiesta alto grado de analfabetismo de los ancianos.
