The effect of magnesium addition on the phase formation and electric properties of LiNbO3 powder prepared from polymeric precursor was analyzed. It was shown that the unit-cell volume of the rhombohedral phase decreased with increasing magnesium concentration. Small amounts of secondary phases were observed in LiNbO3 powder doped with 5 and 10 mol% Mg+2. These results indicated that the Mg+2 ion was substituted for niobium ion in the rhombohedral phase. The addition of Mg+2 promotes densification of LiNbO3 ceramics. It was noticed that the increase in additive concentration leads to a decrease of electric properties, K-p and d(33). This is due to formation of LiNb3O8 and MgNb2O6 phases at the grain boundaries. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The nonohmic electrical features of (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics, which have very strong gigantic dielectric is believed originate from potential barriers at the grain boundaries. In the present study, we used the admittance and impedance spectroscopy technique to investigate (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite ceramics with low nonohmic electrical properties. The study was conducted under two different conditions: on as-sintered ceramics and on ceramics thermally treated in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. The results confirm that thermal treatment in oxygen-rich atmospheres influence the nonohmic properties. Annealing at oxygen-rich atmospheres improve the nonohmic behavior and annealing at oxygen-poor atmospheres decrease the nonohmic properties, a behavior already reported for common metal oxide nonohmic devices and here firstly evidenced for the (Ca-1/4,Cu-3/4)TiO3 perovskite related materials. The results show that oxygen also influences the capacitance values at low frequencies, a behavior that is indicative of the Schottky-type nature of the potential barrier. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. SnO2 ceramics doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation of SnZnWO8 and ZnWO6 at the grain boundaries without strong influence on the densification process. The electrical characterization (log E x log J) shows that the ternary system SnO2-ZnO-WO3 exhibits a very high resistivity of around 10(14) Omega M. Independently of the WO3 concentration, the electrical conductivity of the Sn02-ZnO-WO3 system is always lower than that of the undoped tin dioxide. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Two ways of application of intensive milling in ZnO varistors processing were compared. First was intensive milling of mixture of previously prepared constituent phases. In this case, intensive milling was applied only to obtain highly activated nanocrystalline varistor powder mixtures. Second application is intensive milling of simple mixture of oxides that could result not only in activation and formation of nanocrystal line powders, but also in mechanochernical reaction and synthesis of constituent phases. Powders and ceramics samples were characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. as well as by de electrical measurements (nonlinearity coefficients, leakage current and breakdown field). Differences in microstructural and electrical properties of obtained varistors were discussed and optimal milling and processing conditions were recommended. The best electrical characteristics were found in sample ZI -DMCP-m, which exhibited leakage current of 2.5 mu A/cm(2), nonlinear coefficient reaching 58 and breakdown field of 8950 V/cm. The effects of La2O3 on the properties of (Zn, Co, Ta) doped SnO2 varistors were investigated in this study. The samples with different La2O3 concentrations were sintered at 1400 degrees C for 2 h and their properties were characterized by XRD, SEM, I-V and impedance spectroscopy. The grain size was found to decrease from 13 pm to 9 gm with increasing La2O3 content. The addition of rare earth element leads to increase the nonlinear coefficient and the breakdown voltage. The enhancement was expected to arise from the possible segregation of lanthanide ion due to its larger ionic radius to the grain boundaries, thereby modifying its electrical characteristics. Furthermore, the dopants such as La may help in the adsorption of O' to O '' at the grain boundaries characteristics. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The SnO2 based varistor systems recently presented in the literature appear to have a promising potential in commercial applications. Experimental evidence shows that there is a dependence of nonlinear constant values with thermal treatment under different atmospheres. Thermal treatments in oxygen and nitrogen rich atmospheres at 900 degreesC prove this dependence, indicating that the nonlinear constant values are significantly lower when the material is submitted to a nitrogen atmosphere. Moreover, electrical properties can be restored when the varistor is subjected to thermal treatment at the same temperature in an oxygen atmosphere, indicating that the mechanism seems to be reversible. This paper discusses this behavior focusing in the grain boundary region. Ta2O5 mol% concentrations are also analyzed and the results indicate an optimum Ta2O5 concentration of 0.05 mol% for the electrical properties (alpha = 44 and E-B = 6150 V cm(-1)). Structural and electrical properties of ZnO varistors were investigated as a function of spinel composition. Six varistor mixtures differing only in chemical composition of spinel, were prepared by mixing separately synthesized constituent phases (DSCP method). Compositions of constituent phases in sintered samples were investigated by changes of lattice parameters of the phases, as well as by EDS analysis of the constituent phases. It was found that compositions of ZnO, intergranular and spinel phases were partially changed during sintering due to redistribution of additives, that was controlled by starting spinel composition and its stability. Electrical characterization showed significant difference in electrical properties of investigated varistors: nonlinearity coefficients ranging from 22 to 55 and leakage currents differing by the order of magnitude. Activation energies of conduction were obtained from ac impedance spectroscopy measurements. Calculated values of activation energies were in the range 0.61-1.0 eV confirming difference in defect structure of ZnO grain boundaries in varistors containing different spinel phases. Tin dioxide (SnO2) thin film photoconductivity spectra were measured for a large temperature range using a deuterium source, the intensity of photocurrent spectra in the range 200-400 nm is temperature dependent, and the photocurrent increases in the ultraviolet even for illumination with photon energies much higher than the bandgap transition. This behavior is related to recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundaries, which is consistent with nanoscopic crystallite size of sol-gel deposited films. This paper reports a study of influence of Cr concentration on the electrical properties and microstructure of SnO2-based powders doped with Mn and Nb, prepared by an organic route (Pechini method). All the samples were compacted into discs and sintered at 1300 degrees C for 3h, resulting in ceramics with relative density varying between 78% and 98%. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Impedance spectroscopy characterization indicated that the conductivity decreases as Cr concentration increases, probably due to Cr segregation at grain boundaries, which reduces grain size, increasing the number of resistive boundaries.

Addition of 0.5 mol% of CoO into SnO2 promotes densification of this oxide to 99% of the theoretical density during sintering. TEM in this system reveals that after sintering at 1210 degrees C a secondary phase of Co2SnO4 is precipitated at the SnO2 grain boundaries during cooling. This phase is formed by diffusion of Co ions from the bulk to the grain boundary during sintering leaving needle-like defects at the grain bulk. The high resolution TEM micrograph of this system sintered at 1210 degrees C and 1400 degrees C showed an amorphous grain boundary region low in cobalt, indicating that the Co2SnO4 phase is precipitated from this region. The effects of the degradation process on the structural, microstructural and electrical properties of ZnO-based varistors were analyzed. Rietveld refinement showed that the BiO2-x phase is affected by the degradation process. Besides the changes in the spinel phase, the degradation process also affects the lattice microstrain in the ZnO phase. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed electrode-melting failure, while wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy qualitative analysis showed deficiency of oxygen species at the grain boundaries in the degraded samples. Atomic force microscopy using electrostatic mode force illustrated a decrease in the charge density at the grain boundaries of the degraded sample. Transmission electron microscopy showed submicrometric spinel grains embedded in a ZnO matrix, but their average grain size is smaller in the degraded sample than in the standard one. Long pulses appeared to be more harmful for the varistors' properties than short ones, causing higher leakage current values. The electrical characteristics of the degraded sample are partially restored after heat treatment in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Laboratory time-scale experiments were conducted on Carboniferous Limestone gravels from the Mendip Hills area, England, with the purpose of evaluating the release of Rn-222 to the water phase. The specific surface areas of the samples were 4.14 and 1.69 cm g(-1), which provided, respectively, values of 50.6 and 12.7 pCi for the released Rn. These results allowed the calculation of the emanation coefficient of this rock matrix with respect to the release of Rn, where completely different values corresponding to 23% and 6% were found, suggesting that the extent to which grain boundaries or imperfections in aggregates of micro-crystals of calcite intersect the particle surface certainly affects the Rn release. They also permitted the evaluation of models for the generation of Rn in rocks and transfer to water, in order to interpret the radioactivity due to this gas in groundwaters from the karstic aquifer of the Mendip Hills area, where the calculated activities in groundwater based on the values of 23% and 6% for the emanation coefficient were about 51 and 15 times higher than actually measured in groundwater. Therefore, the emanation coefficient in nature is considerably smaller than in the lab experiment, and another factor k (0 < k < 1) may be introduced into the equations related to the modelling, with the aim of adjusting the theoretical-practical results. Mercury thin films prepared by electrochemical deposition on Pt-Ir alloy and after partial removing of mercury at different temperatures were studied by means of an interferometric surface mapping microscope and by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy. Mercury film samples having mercury partially removed by anodic stripping at a potential more positive than the corresponding peak in the voltammogram were also studied using the same techniques. For blank samples the surface topographic studies showed well defined grain boundaries. Mercury film samples when heated up to different temperatures showed as material is removed and that the surface roughness decreases as the temperature increases. For samples heated up to 800 degrees C the surface roughness is approximately the same that for the blank. A model for the interphase of volumetric mercury electrodeposited on a Pt-Ir alloy has been proposed using samples both electrochemically and thermally removed of their Hg coatings. The model includes a layered three-region structure, containing at least two Pt-Hg intermetallics: PtHg4 and PtHg2. A substrate modified region, iridium rich, has also been detected.
