We present the results of a numerical study of a model of the hydrodynamics of a sheared nematogenic fluid, taking into account the effects of order-parameter stresses on the velocity profile but allowing spatial variations only in the gradient direction. When parameter values are such that the stress from orientational distortions is comparable to the bare viscous stress, the system exhibits steady states with the characteristics of shear banding. In addition, nonlinearity in the coupling of extensional flow to orientation leads to the appearance of a new steady state in which the features of both spatiotemporal chaos and shear banding are present.

Rotating shear flows, when angular momentum increases and angular velocity decreases as functions of radiation coordinate, are hydrodynamically stable under linear perturbation. The Keplerian flow is an example of such a system, which appears in an astrophysical context. Although decaying eigenmodes exhibit large transient energy growth of perturbation which could govern nonlinearity in the system, the feedback of inherent instability to generate turbulence seems questionable. We show that such systems exhibiting growing pseudo-eigenmodes easily reach an upper bound of growth rate in terms of the logarithmic norm of the involved non-normal operators, thus exhibiting feedback of inherent instability. This supports the existence of turbulence of hydrodynamic origin in the Keplerian accretion disc in astrophysics. Hence, this answers the question of the mismatch between the linear theory and experimental/observed data and helps in resolving the outstanding question of the origin of turbulence therein.

This work deals with the effects of weak nonlinearity and weak dissipation on a linear wave in relativistic gasdynamics. Using perturbation and asymptotic expansions, a relativistic analogue of generalised one-dimensional Burgers' equation of classical gasdynamics is derived to describe far-field description of the wave. Steady state solution is presented for strict one-dimensional case.

This paper deals with the evaluation of the component-laminate load-carrying capacity, i.e., to calculate the loads that cause the failure of the individual layers and the component-laminate as a whole in four-bar mechanism. The component-laminate load-carrying capacity is evaluated using the Tsai-Wu-Hahn failure criterion for various layups. The reserve factor of each ply in the component-laminate is calculated by using the maximum resultant force and the maximum resultant moment occurring at different time steps at the joints of the mechanism. Here, all component bars of the mechanism are made of fiber reinforced laminates and have thin rectangular cross-sections. They could, in general, be pre-twisted and/or possess initial curvature, either by design or by defect. They are linked to each other by means of revolute joints. We restrict ourselves to linear materials with small strains within each elastic body (beam). Each component of the mechanism is modeled as a beam based on geometrically nonlinear 3-D elasticity theory. The component problems are thus split into 2-D analyses of reference beam cross-sections and nonlinear 1-D analyses along the three beam reference curves. For the thin rectangular cross-sections considered here, the 2-D cross-sectional nonlinearity is also overwhelming. This can be perceived from the fact that such sections constitute a limiting case between thin-walled open and closed sections, thus inviting the nonlinear phenomena observed in both. The strong elastic couplings of anisotropic composite laminates complicate the model further. However, a powerful mathematical tool called the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) not only enables such a dimensional reduction, but also provides asymptotically correct analytical solutions to the nonlinear cross-sectional analysis. Such closed-form solutions are used here in conjunction with numerical techniques for the rest of the problem to predict more quickly and accurately than would otherwise be possible. Local 3-D stress, strain and displacement fields for representative sections in the component-bars are recovered, based on the stress resultants from the 1-D global beam analysis. A numerical example is presented which illustrates the failure of each component-laminate and the mechanism as a whole.

We use the BBGKY hierarchy equations to calculate, perturbatively, the lowest order nonlinear correction to the two-point correlation and the pair velocity for Gaussian initial conditions in a critical density matter-dominated cosmological model. We compare our results with the results obtained using the hydrodynamic equations that neglect pressure and find that the two match, indicating that there are no effects of multistreaming at this order of perturbation. We analytically study the effect of small scales on the large scales by calculating the nonlinear correction for a Dirac delta function initial two-point correlation. We find that the induced two-point correlation has a x(-6) behavior at large separations. We have considered a class of initial conditions where the initial power spectrum at small k has the form k(n) with 0 < n less than or equal to 3 and have numerically calculated the nonlinear correction to the two-point correlation, its average over a sphere and the pair velocity over a large dynamical range. We find that at small separations the effect of the nonlinear term is to enhance the clustering, whereas at intermediate scales it can act to either increase or decrease the clustering. At large scales we find a simple formula that gives a very good fit for the nonlinear correction in terms of the initial function. This formula explicitly exhibits the influence of small scales on large scales and because of this coupling the perturbative treatment breaks down at large scales much before one would expect it to if the nonlinearity were local in real space. We physically interpret this formula in terms of a simple diffusion process. We have also investigated the case n = 0, and we find that it differs from the other cases in certain respects. We investigate a recently proposed scaling property of gravitational clustering, and we find that the lowest order nonlinear terms cause deviations from the scaling relations that are strictly valid in the linear regime. The approximate validity of these relations in the nonlinear regime in l(T)-body simulations cannot be understood at this order of evolution.

The use of a number of perovskite phases M MO3-x, as the only forming additive in ZnO ceramics, produces a high nonlinearity index, ?(up to 45), where M is a multivalent transition?metal ion and M is an alkaline earth or a rare?earth ion. From this study, the formation parameters crucial to high nonlinearity, such as nonstoichiometry in the as?received ZnO powder, low x values of the additives and fast cooling rate after the sintering, are explainable on the basis of a depletion layer formation at the presintering stage. This is because of the surface states arising out of the chemisorbed oxygen. The depletion layer is retained during sintering as a result of the higher valence state of M ions, preferentially present at the grain?boundary regions. The fast cooling freezes in the high?temperature concentration of donor?type defects, thereby decreasing the depletion layer width.

The first hyperpolarizabilities of some symmetrically substituted triazines have been measured and compared with those of the corresponding symmetrically substituted benzenes. The octupolar triazines have higher quadratic polarizabilities than the corresponding octupolar benzenes. The triazine ring seems to be a better central acceptor than the benzene ring, but if it acts as a donor as in sym-triphenyl triazine, the nonlinearity improves further.

Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT)/polypyrrole (PPy) fibrils were fabricated by template-free in situ electrochemical deposition of PPy over MWNTs, and characterized by electron microscopy and electrical measurements. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that PPy coating on the surface of nanotube is quite uniform throughout the length, with the possibility of forming unique Y-junctions. Current (I)-voltage (V) characteristics at various temperatures show nonlinearity due to tunneling and hopping contributions to transport across the barriers. AC conductivity measurements (300-4.2 K) show that the onset frequency scales with temperature, and the nanoscale connectivity in MWNT/PPy fibrils decreases with the lowering of temperature. The effect of aluminosilicate (Al2SiO5) on the upturn characteristics of ZnO varistor ceramics has been investigated. Addition of Al2SiO5 shifts the point of upturn above 10(4) A cm(-2). The extended nonlinearity in the high current density region is better correlatable to the presence of higher density of trap stales and changing pattern of trap depths at the grain boundary interface as much as the grain interior conductivity. Microstructure studies show the formation and involvement of a liquid phase during sintering. The secondary phases, predominantly are antimony spinel, Zn7Sb2O12, zinc silicate, Zn2SiO4 and magnesium aluminium silicate. MgAl2Si3O10. Energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDAX) show that Al and Si are distributed more in the grain boundaries and within the secondary phases than in the grain interiors. Capacitance-voltage analyses and dielectric dispersion studies indicate the presence of negative capacitance and associated resonance, indicative of the oscillatory charge redistribution involving increased trapping at the interface states. The admittance spectroscopy data show that the type of trap slates remains unaltered whereas the addition of Al2SiO5 increases the density of low energy traps. This paper presents nonlinear finite element analysis of adhesively bonded joints considering the elastoviscoplastic constitutive model of the adhesive material and the finite rotation of the joint. Though the adherends have been assumed to be linearly elastic, the yielding of the adhesive is represented by a pressure sensitive modified von Mises yield function. The stress-strain relation of the adhesive is represented by the Ramberg-Osgood relation. Geometric nonlinearity due to finite rotation in the joint is accounted for using the Green-Lagrange strain tensor and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor in a total Lagrangian formulation. Critical time steps have been calculated based on the eigenvalues of the transition matrices of the viscoplastic model of the adhesive. Stability of the viscoplastic solution and time dependent behaviour of the joints are examined. A parametric study has been carried out with particular reference to peel and shear stress along the interface. Critical zones for failure of joints have been identified. The study is of significance in the design of lap joints as well as on the characterization of adhesive strength. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: Depression and anxiety have been linked to serious cardiovascular events in patients with preexisting cardiac illness. A decrease in cardiac vagal function as suggested by a decrease in heart rate (HR) variability has been linked to sudden death. Methods: We compared LLE and nonlinearity scores of the unfiltered (UF) and filtered time series (very low, low, and high frequency; VLF, LF and HF) of HR between patients with depression (n = 14) and healthy control subjects (n = 18). Results: We found significantly lower LLE of the unfiltered series in either posture, and HF series in patients with major depression in supine posture (p < .002). LLE (LF/UF), which may indicate relative sympathetic activity was also significantly higher in supine and standing postures in patients (p < .05); LF/HF (LLE) was also higher in patients (p < .05) in either posture. Conclusions: These findings suggest that major depression is associated with decreased cardiac vagal function and a relative increase in sympathetic function, which may be related to the higher risk of cardiovascular mortality, in this group and illustrates the usefulness of nonlinear measures of chaos such as LLE in addition to the commonly used spectral measures.

(La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. Crystallization behaviors of the glass with a composition of 25Li(2)O.25B(2)O(3).50GeO(2) corresponding to lithium borogermanate LiBGeO4 have been examined. It has been confirmed that the LiBGeO4 crystalline phase is formed at the surface of heat-treated glasses. The second harmonic (SH) generation is found from transparent surface crystallized glasses, demonstrating for the first time that the LiBGeO4 phase shows optical nonlinearity. The SH intensity of LiBGeO4 crystallites (powdered state) prepared through crystallization is about ten times as large as that of pulverized alpha-quartz. The SH intensity of transparent crystallized glasses (bulk state) with crystalline layers of 3-4.5 mum thickness increases with increasing heat treatment temperature (540-560degreesC) and time (1-6 h), and the maximum SH intensity among the samples studied is in the order of 1/10 in comparison with that of alpha-quartz single crystal. The transparent crystallized glass obtained by heat treatment at 550alphaC for 3 h exhibits a clear and fine Maker fringe pattern, indicating a highly orientation of LiBGeO4 crystals at the surface.

Pyruvate conversion to acetyl-CoA by the pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) multienzyme complex is known as a key node in affecting the metabolic fluxes of animal cell culture. However, its possible role in causing possible nonlinear dynamic behavior such as oscillations and multiplicity of animal cells has received little attention. In this work, the kinetic and dynamic behavior of PDH of eucaryotic cells has been analyzed by using both in vitro and simplified in vivo models. With the in vitro model the overall reaction rate (v(1)) of PDH is shown to be a nonlinear function of pyruvate concentration, leading to oscillations under certain conditions. All enzyme components affect v, and the nonlinearity of PDH significantly, the protein X and the core enzyme dihydrolipoamide acyltransferase (E2) being mostly predominant. By considering the synthesis rates of pyruvate and PDH components the in vitro model is expanded to emulate in vivo conditions. Analysis using the in vivo model reveals another interesting kinetic feature of the PDH system, namely, multiple steady states. Depending on the pyruvate and enzyme levels or the operation mode, either a steady state with high pyruvate decarboxylation rate or a steady state with significantly lower decarboxylation rate can be achieved under otherwise identical conditions. In general, the more efficient steady state is associated with a lower pyruvate concentration. A possible time delay in the substrate supply and enzyme synthesis can also affect the steady state to be achieved and lead's to oscillations under certain conditions. Overall, the predictions of multiplicity for the PDH system agree qualitatively well with recent experimental observations in animal cell cultures. The model analysis gives some hints for improving pyruavte metabolism in animal cell culture.

A passive vertical hopping robot is here highly idealised as two vertically arranged masses acted on by gravity and coupled by a linear spring. The lower mass makes dead (e = 0) collisions with the rigid ground. The equations of motion can be reduced to a one dimensional map. Fixed points of the map are found in which case the robot hops incessantly. For these conservative solutions the lower mass collides with the ground with zero impact velocity. The interval of attraction for these conservative fixed points depends on system parameters.
