Efectuar una sistematización sobre la situación actual de la investigación sobre los procesos de aprendizaje en matemáticas, y su relación con la evolución histórica del uso educativo del computador. Contextualizar del estado actual de dicha investigación didáctica en relación con la utilización como recurso tecnológico de los sistemas hipermediales. Analizar en el marco de las teorías sobre el procesamiento de la información, sobre el conocimiento matemático y la función que, al respecto, cumple y desarrolla la tecnología hipermedia. Analizar los estudios y aportaciones que se efectúan en el campo del aprendizaje de las matemáticas sobre soporte hipermedia. Proponer análisis y desarrollos específicos en el ámbito del diseño de materiales instructivos para la enseñanza elemental de las matemáticas. Particularmente sobre los llamados diseños hipermedia adaptativos.. Investigación histórica.. En esta tesis se pretende una aproximación dentro de un campo específico de enseñanza-aprendizaje: las matemáticas elementales. Muchas de sus conclusiones son aplicables a otras áreas de conocimiento implicadas en la enseñanza elemental. Analiza los 'modelos' de secuencias de instrucción cuando se tienen en cuenta las investigaciones sobre procesos cognitivos en el aprendizaje de las matemáticas elementales y las posibilidades de mediación instrumental que permiten los computadores y las aplicaciones hipermedia. Es en este ámbito, en donde interseccionan las teorías y los estudios sobre el aprendizaje de las matemáticas - especialmente fecundo en los últimos cincuenta años -, las investigaciones sobre el procesamiento de la información, consolidadas también, a lo largo de la segunda mitad de este siglo y las recientes y nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación.. La investigación analiza desde una perspectiva pedagógica, el confrontar la aplicación más característica de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación al campo de la educación, el hipermedia, y el sector curricular, dentro del ámbito de las matemáticas elementales. En este marco contextual, analiza el proceso de aprendizaje de las matemáticas elementales, cuando en su desarrollo de enseñanza intervienen computadores y, en especial, sistemas hipermedia. Se enmarca en el estudio de las relaciones de comunicación pedagógica, cuando la mediación comunicativa en los diseños instructivos, sobre los que se articula el currículum, incluye soportes hipermedia.

This paper critiques contemporary research and policy approaches taken toward the analysis and abatement of mercury pollution in the small-scale gold mining sector. Unmonitored releases of mercury from gold amalgamation have caused considerable environmental contamination and human health complications in rural reaches of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia. Whilst these problems have caught the attention of the scientific community over the past 15-20 years, the research that has since been undertaken has failed to identify appropriate mitigation measures, and has done little to advance understanding of why contamination persists. Moreover, the strategies used to educate operators about the impacts of acute mercury exposure, and the technologies implemented to prevent farther pollution, have been marginally effective at best. The mercury pollution problem will not be resolved until governments and donor agencies commit to carrying out research aimed at improving understanding of the dynamics of small scale gold mining communities. Acquisition of this knowledge is the key to designing and implementing appropriate support and abatement measures. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper critiques the approach taken by the Ghanaian Government to address mercury pollution in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector. Unmonitored releases of mercury-used in the gold-amalgamation process-have caused numerous environmental complications throughout rural Ghana. Certain policy, technological and educational initiatives taken to address the mounting problem, however, have proved marginally effective at best, having been designed and implemented without careful analysis of mine community dynamics, the organization of activities, operators' needs and local geological conditions. Marked improvements can only be achieved in this area through increased government-initiated dialogue with the now-ostracized illegal galamsey mining community; introducing simple, cost-effective techniques for the reduction of mercury emissions; and effecting government-sponsored participatory training exercises as mediums for communicating information about appropriate technologies and the environment. There is consensus worldwide that the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector is comprised of individuals who are trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, lacking the necessary financial and technological means to improve their standards of living. Minimal work, however, has been undertaken to identify the very factors behind miners' plight, which inevitably vary from country to country. This paper uses a case study of Ghana to argue that an increased dependence upon mercury for amalgamation In artisanal gold-mining communities is one such-albeit overlooked-"agent of poverty". There is mounting empirical evidence which suggests that dealings with the monoponistic middlemen who supply mercury, purchases of costly medicines to remedy ailments caused by mercury poisoning, and a lack of appropriate safeguards and alternatives to amalgamation, are preventing gold miners from improving their practices and livelihoods. The solution to the problem lies in breaking this cycle of dependency, which can be achieved by providing miners with robust support services, mercury-free technologies and education. This paper examines the barriers to mitigating mercury pollution at small-scale gold mines in the Guianas (Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname), and prescribes recommendations for overcoming these obstacles. Whilst considerable attention has been paid to analysing the environmental impacts of operations in the region, minimal research has been undertaken to identify appropriate policy and educational initiatives for addressing the mounting mercury problem. Findings from recent fieldwork and selected interviews with operators from Guyanese and Surinamese gold mining regions reveal that legislative incapacity, the region's varied industry policy stances, various technological problems, and low environmental awareness on the part of communities are impeding efforts to facilitate improved mercury management at small-scale gold mines in the Guianas. Marked improvements can be achieved, however, if legislation, particularly that pertaining to mercury, is harmonised in the region; educational seminars continue to be held in important mining districts; and additional outlets for disseminating environmental equipment and mercury-free technologies are provided.

Reactions of the 1: 2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine with Hg(ClO4)(2) center dot xH(2)O and HgI2 yield yellow [HgL2](ClO4)(2) (1) and HgLI2 (2), respectively. Homoleptic 1 is a 8-coordinate double helical complex with a Hg(II)N-8 core crystallising in the space group Pbca with cell dimensions: a = 16.2250(3), b = 20.9563(7), c = 31.9886(11) angstrom. Complex 2 is a 4-coordinate single helical complex having a Hg(II)N2I2 core crystallising in the space group P2(1)/n with cell dimensions a = 9.8011(3), b = 17.6736(6), c = 16.7123(6) angstrom and b = 95.760(3). In complex 1, the N-donor ligand L uses all of its binding sites to act as tetradentate. On the other hand, it acts as a bidentate N-donor ligand in 2 giving rise to a dangling part. From variable temperature H-1 NMR studies both the complexes are found to be stereochemically non-rigid in solution. In the case of 2, the solution process involves wrapping up of the dangling part of L around the metal. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Atmospheric models suggest that the reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(O) by S(W) prolongs the residence time of mercury. The redox reaction was investigated both in the aqueous phase (where the reductant is sulfite) and on particulate matter (where the reductant in SO2(g)). In both cases, one of the ultimate products is HgS. A mechanism is proposed involving formation of Hg(O) followed by mercury-induced disproportionation of SO2.

Three new phenylmercury(II) and one mercury(II) dithiocarbamate complexes viz. PhHg S2CN(PyCH2) Bz (1), PhHg S2CN(PyCH2)CH3 (2), PhHg S2CN(Bz)CH3 (3), and [Hg (NCS2(PyCH2)Bz)(2)] (4) (Py = pyridine; Bz = benzyl) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, electronic absorption, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structures of 1, 2 and 3 showed a linear S-Hg-C core at the centre of the molecule, in which the metal atom is bound to the sulfur atom of the dithiocarbamate ligand and a carbon atom of the aromatic ring. In contrast the crystal structure of 4 showed a linear S-Hg-S core at the Hg(II) centre of the molecule. Weak intermolecular Hg center dot center dot center dot N (Py) interactions link molecules into a linear chain in the case of 1, whereas chains of dimers are formed in 2 through intermolecular Hg center dot center dot center dot N (Py) and Hg center dot center dot center dot S interactions. 3 forms a conventional face-to-edge dimeric structure through intermolecular Hg center dot center dot center dot S secondary bonding and 4 forms a linear chain of dimers through face-to-face Hg center dot center dot center dot S secondary bonding. In order to elucidate the nature of these secondary bonding interactions and the electronic absorption spectra of the complexes, ab initio quantum chemical calculations at the MP2 level and density functional theory calculations were carried out for 1-3. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibited photoluminescent properties in the solid state as well as in the solution phase. Studies indicate that Hg center dot center dot center dot S interactions decrease and Hg center dot center dot center dot N interactions increase the chances of photoluminescence in the solid phase
