The ultimate objective of the research conducted by the authors is to explore the feasibility of determining reliable in situ values of soil modulus as a function of strain. In field experiments, an excitation is applied on the ground surface using large-scale shakers, and the response of the soil deposit is recorded through receivers embedded in the soil. The focus of this paper is on the simulation and observation of signals that would be recorded at the receiver locations under idealized conditions to provide guidelines on the interpretation of the field measurements. Discrete models are used to reproduce one-dimensional and three-dimensional geometries. When the first times of arrival are detected by receivers under the vertical impulse, they coincide with the arrival of the P wave; therefore related to the constrained modulus of the material. If one considers, on the other hand, phase differences between the motions at two receivers, the picture is far more complicated and one would obtain propagation velocities, function of frequency and measuring location, which do not correspond to either the constrained modulus or Young's modulus. It is necessary then to conduct more rigorous and complicated analyses in order to interpret the data. This paper discusses and illustrates these points. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Shearing rate is among the most important factors affecting the undrained shear strength of clays. In particular, for seismic or storm-wave loading conditions, the shearing rate is much higher than that used in many common laboratory or field tests. The testing program described here evaluates the effect of peripheral velocity on the undrained strength inferred from the shear vane test. The study was conducted on a lightly cemented bentonite-kaolinite mixture manufactured in the laboratory, which possesses many characteristics similar to those of natural materials. Results show that the shear strength increases with increasing peripheral velocity, while the residual shear strength seems to be nearly independent of rotation rate.

The ballistic performance of clamped circular carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibre composite plates of equal areal mass and 0/90 lay-up were measured and compared with that of monolithic 304 stainless steel plates. The effect of matrix shear strength upon the dynamic response was explored by testing: (i) CFRP plates with both a cured and uncured matrix and (ii) UHMWPE laminates with identical fibres but with two matrices of different shear strength. The response of these plates when subjected to mid-span, normal impact by a steel ball was measured via a dynamic high speed shadow moiré technique. Travelling hinges emanate from the impact location and travel towards the supports. The anisotropic nature of the composite plate results in the hinges travelling fastest along the fibre directions and this results in square-shaped moiré fringes in the 0/90 plates. Projectile penetration of the UHMWPE and the uncured CFRP plates occurs in a progressive manner, such that the number of failed plies increases with increasing velocity. The cured CFRP plate, of high matrix shear strength, fails by cone-crack formation at low velocities, and at higher velocities by a combination of cone-crack formation and communition of plies beneath the projectile. On an equal areal mass basis, the low shear strength UHMWPE plate has the highest ballistic limit followed by the high matrix shear strength UHMWPE plate, the uncured CFRP, the steel plate and finally the cured CFRP plate. We demonstrate that the high shear strength UHMWPE plate exhibits Cunniff-type ballistic limit scaling. However, the observed Cunniff velocity is significantly lower than that estimated from the laminate properties. The data presented here reveals that the Cunniff velocity is limited in its ability to characterise the ballistic performance of fibre composite plates as this velocity is independent of the shear properties of the composites: the ballistic limit of fibre composite plates increases with decreasing matrix shear strength for both CFRP and UHMWPE plates. © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. Using transient terahertz photoconductivity measurements, we have made noncontact, room temperature measurements of the ultrafast charge carrier dynamics in InP nanowires. InP nanowires exhibited a very long photoconductivity lifetime of over 1 ns, and carrier lifetimes were remarkably insensitive to surface states despite the large nanowire surface area-to-volume ratio. An exceptionally low surface recombination velocity (170 cm/s) was recorded at room temperature. These results suggest that InP nanowires are prime candidates for optoelectronic devices, particularly photovoltaic devices, without the need for surface passivation. We found that the carrier mobility is not limited by nanowire diameter but is strongly limited by the presence of planar crystallographic defects such as stacking faults in these predominantly wurtzite nanowires. These findings show the great potential of very narrow InP nanowires for electronic devices but indicate that improvements in the crystallographic uniformity of InP nanowires will be critical for future nanowire device engineering.

The response of back-supported buffer plates comprising a solid face sheet and foam core backing impacted by a column of high velocity particles (sand slug) is investigated via a lumped parameter model and coupled discrete/continuum simulations. The buffer plate is either resting on (unattached) or attached to a rigid stationary foundation. The lumped parameter model is used to construct maps of the regimes of behaviour with axes of the ratio of the height of the sand slug to core thickness and the normalised core strength. Four regimes of behaviour are identified based on whether the core compression ends prior to the densification of the sand slug or vice versa. Coupled discrete/continuum simulations are also reported and compared with the lumped parameter model. While the model predicted regimes of behaviour are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations, the lumped parameter model is unable to predict the momentum transmitted to the supports as it neglects the role of elasticity in both the buffer plate and the sand slug. The numerical calculations show that the momentum transfer is minimised for intermediate values of the core strength when the so-called "soft-catch" mechanism is in play. In this regime the bounce-back of the sand slug is minimised which reduces the momentum transfer. However, in this regime, the impulse reduction is small (less than 10% of that transferred to a rigid structure). For high values of the core strength, the response of the buffer plate resembles a rigid plate with nearly no impulse mitigation while at low values of core strength, a slap event occurs when the face sheet impinges against the foundation due to full densification of the foam core. This slap event results in a significant enhancement of the momentum transfer to the foundation. The results demonstrate that appropriately designed buffer plates have potential as impulse mitigators in landmine loading situations. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The low speed impact responses of simply-supported and clamped sandwich beams with corrugated and Y-frame cores have been measured in a drop-weight apparatus at 5 m s-1. The AISI 304 stainless steel sandwich beams comprised two identical face sheets and represented 1:20 scale versions of ship hull designs. No significant rate effects were observed at impact speeds representative of ship collisions: the drop-weight responses were comparable to the ones measured quasi-statically. Moreover, the corrugated and Y-frame core beams had similar performances. Three-dimensional finite element (FE) models simulated the experiments and were in good agreement with the measurements. The simulations demonstrated correctly that the sandwich beams collapsed by core indentation under both quasi-static loading and in the drop-weight experiments. These FE models were then used to investigate the sensitivity of impact response to (i) velocity, over a wider range of velocities than achievable with the drop-weight apparatus, and (ii) the presence of the back face sheet. The dynamic responses of sandwich beams with both front and back face sheets were found to be within 20% of the quasi-static responses for speeds less than approximately 5 m s-1. This suggests that quasi-static considerations are adequate to model the collision of a sandwich ship hull. By contrast, beams without a back face collapsed by Brazier buckling under quasi-static loading conditions, and by core indentation at a loading velocity of 5 m s-1. Thus, dynamic considerations are needed in ship hull designs that do not employ a back face. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Understanding combustion instabilities requires accurate measurements of the acoustic velocity perturbation into injectors. This is often accomplished via the use of the two microphone technique, as this only requires two pressure transducers. However, measurements of the actual velocities emerging from the injectors are not often taken, leaving questions regarding the assumptions about the acoustic velocity. A comparison of velocity measured at downstream of the injector with that of two-microphone technique can show the accuracy and limitations of two-microphone technique. In this paper, velocity measurements are taken using both particle image velocimetry (PIV) and the two-microphone technique in a high pressure facility designed for aeroengine injector measurements. The flow is excited using an area modulation device installed on the choked end of the combustion chamber, with PIV measurements enabled by optical access downstream of the injector through a quartz tube and windows. Acoustic velocity perturbations at the injector are determined by considering the Fourier transformed pressure fluctuations for two microphones installed at a known distance upstream of the injector. PIV measurements are realized by seeding the air flow with micrometric water particles under 2.5 bar pressure at ambient temperature. Phase locked velocity fields are realized by synchronizing the acquisition of PIV images with the revolution of the acoustic modulator using the pressure signal measured at the face of injector. The mean velocity fluctuation is calculated as the difference between maximum and minimum velocities, normalized by the mean velocity of the unforced case. Those values are compared with the peak-to-peak velocity fluctuation amplitude calculated by the two-microphone technique. Although the ranges of velocity fluctuations for both techniques are similar, the variation of fluctuation with forcing frequencies diverges significantly with frequency. The differences can be attributed to several limitations associated with of both techniques, such as the quality of the signal, the signal/noise ratio, the accuracy of PIV measurements and the assumption of isentropic flow of the particle velocity from the plenum through the injector. We conclude that two-microphone methods can be used as a reference value for the velocity fluctuation in low order applications such as flame transfer functions, but not for drawing conclusions regarding the absolute velocity fluctuations in the injector. The dynamic response of end-clamped sandwich and monolithic beams of equal areal mass subjected to loading via high-velocity slugs of dry and water-saturated sand is measured using a novel laboratory-based method. The sandwich beams comprise aluminium face sheets and an aluminium honeycomb core: the effect of sandwich core strength and beam thickness on the dynamic beam deflection is investigated by varying the orientation and height of the anisotropic aluminium honeycomb core material. High-speed imaging is used to measure the transient transverse deflection of the beams and to record the dynamic modes of deformation. The measurements show that sandwich beams with thick, strong cores are optimal and that these beams significantly outperform monolithic beams of equal mass. The water-saturated sand slugs cause significantly higher deflections compared to the dry sand slugs having the same mean slug velocity and we demonstrate that this enhanced deflection is due to the larger mass of the water-saturated slugs. Finally, we show that the impact of sand slugs is equivalent to the impact of a crushable foam projectile. The experiments using foam projectiles are significantly simpler to perform and thus represent a more convenient laboratory technique. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we propose a new algorithm for reconstructing phase-encoded velocity images of catalytic reactors from undersampled NMR acquisitions. Previous work on this application has employed total variation and nonlinear conjugate gradients which, although promising, yields unsatisfactory, unphysical visual results. Our approach leverages prior knowledge about the piecewise-smoothness of the phase map and physical constraints imposed by the system under study. We show how iteratively regularizing the real and imaginary parts of the acquired complex image separately in a shift-invariant wavelet domain works to produce a piecewise-smooth velocity map, in general. Using appropriately defined metrics we demonstrate higher fidelity to the ground truth and physical system constraints than previous methods for this specific application. © 2013 IEEE.

A model for off-wall boundary conditions for turbulent flow is investigated. The objective of such a model is to circumvent the need to resolve the buffer layer near the wall, by providing conditions in the logarithmic layer for the overlying flow. The model is based on the self-similarity of the flow at different heights in the logarithmic layer. It was first proposed by Mizuno and Jiménez (2013), imposing at the boundary plane a velocity field obtained on-the-fly from an overlying region. The key feature of the model was that the lengthscales of the field were rescaled to account for the self-similarity law. The model was successful at sustaining a turbulent logarithmic layer, but resulted in some disagreements in the flow statistics, compared to fully-resolved flows. These disagreements needed to be addressed for the model to be of practical application. In the present paper, a more refined, wavelength-dependent rescaling law is proposed, based on the wavelength-dependent dynamics in fully-resolved flows. Results for channel flow show that the new model eliminates the large artificial pressure fluctuations found in the previous one, and a better agreement is obtained in the bulk properties, the flow fluctuations, and their spectral distribution across the whole domain. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Surface texturization is an effective way to enhance the absorption of light for optoelectronic devices but it also aggravates the surface recombination by enlarging the surface area. In order to evaluate the influence of texture structures on the surface recombination, an effective surface recombination velocity is defined which is assumed to have an equivalent recombination effect on a flat surface. Based on numerical and analytical calculation, the dependences of effective surface recombination on the pattern geometry, the surface recombination velocity, and the diffusion length are analyzed.

The unexpected decrease in measured responsivity observed in a specific GaN Schottky barrier photodetector (PD) at high reverse bias voltage was investigated and explained. Device equivalent transforms and small signal analysis were performed to analyse the test circuit. On this basis, a model was built which explained the responsivity decrease quantitatively. After being revised by this model, responsivity curves varying with bias voltage turned out to be reasonable. It is proved that the decrease is related to the dynamic parallel resistance of the photodiode. The results indicate that with a GaN Schottky PD, the choice of load resistance is restricted according to the dynamic parallel resistance of the device to avoid responsivity decay at high bias voltage.

Transport phenomena in radial flow metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor with three concentric vertical inlets are studied by two-dimensional numerical modeling. By varying the parameters such as gas pressure, flow rates combination of multi-inlets, geometric shapes and sizes of reactor and flow distributor, temperatures of susceptor and ceiling, and susceptor rotation, the corresponding velocity, temperature, and concentration fields inside the reactor are obtained; the onset and change of flow recirculation cells under influences of those parameters are determined. It is found that recirculation cells, originated from flow separation near the bend of reactor inlets, are affected mainly by the reactor height and shape, the operating pressure, the flow rates combination of multi-inlets, and the mean temperature between susceptor and ceiling. By increasing the flow rate of mid-inlet and the mean temperature, decreasing the pressure, maintaining the reactor height below certain criteria, and trimming the bends of reactor wall and flow distributor to streamlined shape, the recirculation cells can be minimized so that smooth and rectilinear flow prevails in the susceptor region, which corresponds to smooth and rectilinear isotherms and larger reactant concentration near the susceptor. For the optimized reactor shape, the reactor size can be enlarged to diameter D = 40 cm and height H = 2 cm without flow recirculation. The susceptor rotation over a few hundred rpm around the reactor central axis will induce the recirculation cell near the exit and deflect the streamlines near the susceptor, which is not the case for vertical reactors. High-quality and high-resistivity GaN films were grown on (0001) sapphire face by metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy. To measure the surface acoustic wave properties accurately, we deposited metallized interdigital transducers on the GaN surface. The acoustic surface wave velocity and electromechanical coupling coefficient were measured, respectively, to be 5667 m/s and 1.9% by the pulse method.
