The reliability of bidirectional communication link can be guaranteed with Automatic Repeat Request Procedures (ARQ). The standard STANAG 5066 describes the ARQ procedure for HF communications that can either be applied to existing HF physical layers modems or adapted to future physical layer designs. In this contribution the physical layer parameters of an HF modem (HFDVL), developed by the authors over the last decade, are chosen to optimize the performance of the ARQ procedure described in STANAG 5066. Besides the interleaving length, constellation size and coding type, the OFDM-based HFDVL modem permits the selection of the number of receiver antennas. It will be shown that this parameter gives additional degrees of freedom and permits reliable communication over low SNR HF communication links.

ABSTRACT The first strict processing performed with the Bernese scientific software and contemplating the highest standards internationally recommended calculation, yielded a precise field of high accuracy, based on the integration and standardization of data from a GPS network located in Costa Rica. This processing watched a total of 119 weeks of daily data, is about 2.3 years from January 2009 to April 2011, for a total of 30 GPS stations, of which 22 are located in the country of Costa Rica and 8 hospitalizations within the network of Geocentric System for the Americas (SIRGAS). The semi-free solutions generated, every week a GPS network with high internal accuracy defined by vectors between stations and the final coordinates of the satellite constellation. The weekly evaluation given by repeatability of the solutions provided in average errors of 1.7 mm 1.4 mm and 5.1 mm in the components [n e u], confirming a high consistency in these solutions. Although semi-free solutions have a high internal accuracy, they are not used for purposes of kinematic analysis, because they lack a reference frame. In Latin America, the densification of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), is represented by a network of continuously operating GNSS stations SIRGAS, known as SIRGAS-CON. Through weekly final coordinates of the 8 stations considered as a link, described each of the solutions to the frame 119 SIRGAS. The introduction of the frame SIRGAS to semi-free solutions generates deformations. The deformations of the semi-free solutions are products of the kinematics of each of the plates in which link stations are located. After SIRGAS weekly link to SIRGAS frame, an estimate of the velocity vectors of each of the stations was done. The velocity vectors for each SIRGAS stations are known with high accuracy. For this calculation routine in MatLab environment, based on a least squares fit was scheduled. The values obtained compared to the official values, gave average differences of the order of 0.06 cm/yr, -0.08 cm/yr and -0.10 cm/yr respectively for the coordinates [XYZ]. Thus was possible to determine the geocentric coordinates [XYZ]T and its temporal variations [vX vY vZ]T for the set of 22 GPS stations of Costa Rica, within IGS05 datum, reference epoch 2010.5. The high accuracy vector for geocentric coordinates was obtained, however for some stations the velocity vectors was not representative because of the relatively short time (less than one year) of data files. Under this premise, the eight stations located in the south of the country were excluded. This involved an estimate of the local velocity field with only twenty national stations plus three stations in Panama and Nicaragua. The algorithm used was Least Squares Collocation, which allows the estimation and interpolation of data from known data effectively. The algorithm was programmed with MatLab. The resulting field was estimated with a resolution of 30' X 30' and is highly consistent with a resulting average speed of 2.58 cm/y in a direction of 40.8° to the northeast. This field was validated based on the model data VEMOS2009 recommended by SIRGAS. The differences in average velocity for the stations used as input for the calculation of the field were of the order of +0.63 cm/yr, +0.22 cm/yr for the velocity values in latitude and longitude, which is a good determination velocity values and estimating the empirical covariance function necessary for implementing the method of application. Furthermore, the grid used as the basis for interpolation provided differences of about -0.62 cm/yr, -0.12 cm/yr to latitude and longitude. Additionally, the results of this investigation were used as input to an approach in defining the boundary of Panama called block within the country of Costa Rica. The calculation of the components of the Euler pole through a routine program in MatLab and applied to different combinations of points gave no further contributions to the physical definition of this limit. The strategy was simply confirming the difference in the direction of all the velocity vectors and not allowed to reveal more detail revealed a location of this area within the country of Costa Rica.

Singular-value decomposition (SVD)-based multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems, where the whole MIMO channel is decomposed into a number of unequally weighted single-input single-output (SISO) channels, have attracted a lot of attention in the wireless community. The unequal weighting of the SISO channels has led to intensive research on bit- and power allocation even in MIMO channel situation with poor scattering conditions identified as the antennas correlation effect. In this situation, the unequal weighting of the SISO channels becomes even much stronger. In comparison to the SVD-assisted MIMO transmission, geometric mean decomposition (GMD)-based MIMO systems are able to compensate the drawback of weighted SISO channels when using SVD, where the decomposition result is nearly independent of the antennas correlation effect. The remaining interferences after the GMD-based signal processing can be easily removed by using dirty paper precoding as demonstrated in this work. Our results show that GMD-based MIMO transmission has the potential to significantly simplify the bit and power loading processes and outperforms the SVD-based MIMO transmission as long as the same QAM-constellation size is used on all equally-weighted SISO channels.

ABSTRACT This thesis is developed within the framework of satellite communications in the innovative field of small satellites also known as nanosatellites (<10 kg) or CubeSats, so called from their cubic form. These nanosatellites are characterized by their low cost because they use commercial components called COTS (commercial off-the-shelf), and their small size and mass, such as 1U Cubesats (10cm * 10cm * 10cm) with approximately 1 kg mass. This thesis is based on a proposal made by the author of the thesis to put into orbit the first Peruvian satellite in his country called Chasqui I, which was successfully launched into orbit from the International Space Station in 2014. The experience of this research work led me to propose a constellation of small satellites named Waposat to provide water quality monitoring sensors worldwide, scenario that is used in this thesis. In this scenario and given the limited features of nanosatellites, both power and data rate, I propose to investigate a new communications architecture that allows solving in an optimal manner the problems of nanosatellites in orbit LEO due to the disruptive nature of their communications by putting emphasis on the link and application layers. This thesis presents and evaluates a new communications architecture to provide services to terrestrial sensor networks using a space Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) based solution. In addition, I propose a new multiple access mechanism protocol based on extended unslotted ALOHA that takes into account the priority of gateway traffic, which we call ALOHA multiple access with gateway priority (ALOHAGP) with an adaptive contention mechanism. It uses satellite feedback to implement the congestion control, and to dynamically adapt the channel effective throughput in an optimal way. We assume a finite sensor population model and a saturated traffic condition where every sensor always has frames to transmit. The performance was evaluated in terms of effective throughput, delay and system fairness. In addition, a DTN convergence layer (ALOHAGP-CL) has been defined as a subset of the standard TCP-CL (Transmission Control Protocol-Convergence Layer). This thesis reveals that ALOHAGP/CL adequately supports the proposed DTN scenario, mainly when reactive fragmentation is used. Finally, this thesis investigates an optimal DTN message (bundles) transfer using proactive fragmentation strategies to give service to a ground sensor network using a nanosatellite communications link which uses a multi-access mechanism with priority in downlink traffic (ALOHAGP). The effective throughput has been optimized by adapting the protocol parameters as a function of the current number of active sensors received from satellite. Also, there is currently no method for advertising or negotiating the maximum size of a bundle which can be accepted by a bundle agent in satellite communications for storage and delivery, so that bundles which are too large can be dropped or which are too small are inefficient. We have characterized this kind of scenario obtaining a probability distribution for frame arrivals to nanosatellite and visibility time distribution that provide an optimal proactive fragmentation of DTN bundles. We have found that the proactive effective throughput (goodput) reaches a value slightly lower than reactive fragmentation approach. This contribution allows to use the proactive fragmentation optimally with all its advantages such as the incorporation of the security model of DTN and simplicity in protocol implementation for computers with many CPU and memory limitations. The implementation of these contributions was initially contemplated as part of the payload of the nanosatellite QBito, which is part of the constellation of 50 nanosatellites envisaged under the QB50 project.

When the heart fails, there is often a constellation of biochemical alterations of the β-adrenergic receptor (βAR) signaling system, leading to the loss of cardiac inotropic reserve. βAR down-regulation and functional uncoupling are mediated through enhanced activity of the βAR kinase (βARK1), the expression of which is increased in ischemic and failing myocardium. These changes are widely viewed as representing an adaptive mechanism, which protects the heart against chronic activation. In this study, we demonstrate, using in vivo intracoronary adenoviral-mediated gene delivery of a peptide inhibitor of βARK1 (βARKct), that the desensitization and down-regulation of βARs seen in the failing heart may actually be maladaptive. In a rabbit model of heart failure induced by myocardial infarction, which recapitulates the biochemical βAR abnormalities seen in human heart failure, delivery of the βARKct transgene at the time of myocardial infarction prevents the rise in βARK1 activity and expression and thereby maintains βAR density and signaling at normal levels. Rather than leading to deleterious effects, cardiac function is improved, and the development of heart failure is delayed. These results appear to challenge the notion that dampening of βAR signaling in the failing heart is protective, and they may lead to novel therapeutic strategies to treat heart disease via inhibition of βARK1 and preservation of myocardial βAR function.

Patients with mutations in the thyroid hormone receptor β (TRβ) gene manifest resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH), resulting in a constellation of variable phenotypic abnormalities. To understand the molecular basis underlying the action of mutant TRβ in vivo, we generated mice with a targeted mutation in the TRβ gene (TRβPV; PV, mutant thyroid hormone receptor kindred PV) by using homologous recombination and the Cre/loxP system. Mice expressing a single PVallele showed the typical abnormalities of thyroid function found in heterozygous humans with RTH. Homozygous PV mice exhibit severe dysfunction of the pituitary–thyroid axis, impaired weight gains, and abnormal bone development. This phenotype is distinct from that seen in mice with a null mutation in the TRβ gene. Importantly, we identified abnormal expression patterns of several genes in tissues of TRβPV mice, demonstrating the interference of the mutant TR with the gene regulatory functions of the wild-type TR in vivo. These results show that the actions of mutant and wild-type TRβ in vivo are distinct. This model allows further study of the molecular action of mutant TR in vivo, which could lead to better treatment for RTH patients.

This review presents a view of hyperalgesia and allodynia not typical of the field as a whole. That is, exaggerated pain is presented as one of many natural consequences of peripheral infection and injury. The constellation of changes that results from such immune challenges is called the sickness response. This sickness response results from immune-to-brain communication initiated by proinflammatory cytokines released by activated immune cells. In response to signals it receives from the immune system, the brain orchestrates the broad array of physiological, behavioral, and hormonal changes that comprise the sickness response. The neurocircuitry and neurochemistry of sickness-induced hyperalgesia are described. One focus of this discussion is on the evidence that spinal cord microglia and astrocytes are key mediators of sickness-induced hyperalgesia. Last, evidence is presented that hyperalgesia and allodynia also result from direct immune activation, rather than neural activation, of these same spinal cord glia. Such glial activation is induced by viruses such as HIV-1 that are known to invade the central nervous system. Implications of exaggerated pain states created by peripheral and central immune activation are discussed.

The thesis of this dissertation is that the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif, which includes the language of not only descending and ascending, but also going, coming, and being sent, performs a significant literary and christological function in the Gospel of John. The Evangelist's Descent/Ascent Leitmotif becomes the Gospel's organizing principal, drawing together a constellation of verbs and a number of themes, including Jesus-Son's origin, identity, relationship to God, authority, signs and works, life, and glory. In the introductory chapter, after providing a layout of the dissertation, the discussion turns to the spacial dimensions and christological importance of the vertical and horizontal depictions of the descending, ascending, coming, going, and being sent verbs. The focus of chapter two is to explain and illustrate, using a version of the Cinderella story, a method that serves to identify the Leitmotif and the verbs, motifs, and themes the Leitmotif draws within its constellation. This approach, titled a thematic structural method, integrates works from thematic scholars Horst Daemmrich and Eugene Falk with works from literary structural scholars A. J Greimas and Roland Barthes, and is a tool to analyze the influence of the Leitmotif as the Gospel's organizing principal on the relationships between the Leitmotif and numerous themes from which John's Christology emerges. The task of chapter three is to explain the rationale for the selection of the Leitmotif's verbs of descending, ascending, coming, going, and being sent. Chapters four and five investigate how the Evangelist, with the repetition of the Leitmotif, constructs his narrative to tell the story of the historical Jesus and shape the Evangelist's Christology. Additionally, the focus is to analyze the transforming influences of the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif on the themes of Jesus-Son's origin, identity, relationship to the Father, and authority, through his signs and works, life, and glory. The Descent/Ascent Leitmotif depicts a divine round trip, and the emphasis of chapter six is to examine the role of the Leitmotif in Jesus-Son's departure from the world and return to God. The Evangelist's use of the Leitmotif in Jesus' prayer to the Father (John 17) and the promise of the Paraclete are included in this chapter. Due to the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif's inherent spatial overtones, elements related to Jesus' return, including heaven, world, the hour, and his form after his resurrection, are explored from a cosmological and ontological perspective.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for the unsupervised clustering of graphs in the context of the constellation approach to object recognition. Such method is an EM central clustering algorithm which builds prototypical graphs on the basis of fast matching with graph transformations. Our experiments, both with random graphs and in realistic situations (visual localization), show that our prototypes improve the set median graphs and also the prototypes derived from our previous incremental method. We also discuss how the method scales with a growing number of images.

Henry David Thoreau and his masterpiece, Walden, are both deeply embedded in our lives. It’s almost impossible today to perform a candid walk through the pages of the book that brings in its title the name of the beautiful lake, near Concord, without carrying to our contemporary reading the constellation of fears that haunt us. We are the fragile inhabitants of the grim and probably desperate, “Anthropocene era”2. How can we follow the thoughts and steps from the solitary friend and disciple of Emerson, without seeing him as a forefather of our anguish before the future, seemingly captured by the shadows of economic doom and environmental collapse?

How much does European citizenship cost in the EU? This was the question that has raised so much controversy over the Maltese citizenship-for-sale programme. The outright selling of Maltese nationality to rich foreigners led to unprecedented responses by the European Parliament and European Commission. This paper examines the affair and its relevance for current and future configurations of citizenship of the EU. It studies the extent to which member states are still free to lay down the grounds for the acquisition and loss of nationality without any EU supervision and accountability. It provides a comparative overview of member state schemes and the exact price for buying citizenship and a residency permit in the EU. It is argued that the EU’s intervention on the Maltese citizenship-for-sale affair constitutes a legal precedent for assessing the lawfulness of passport-for-sale or golden migration programmes in other EU member states. The affair has also revealed the increasing relevance of a set of European and international legal principles limiting member states’ discretion over citizenship matters and providing a supranational constellation of accountability venues scrutinising the impact of their decisions over citizenship of the Union. The Maltese citizenship-for-sale affair has placed at the forefront the EU general principle of sincere cooperation in nationality matters. Member states’ actions in the citizenship domain cannot negatively affect in substance the concept and freedoms of European citizenship. That notwithstanding, the European institutions’ insistence on the need for Maltese nationality law to require a ‘genuine link’ in the form of an effective residence criteria for any rich applicants to benefit from the fast-track naturalisation poses a fundamental dilemma from the angle of Union citizenship: what is this genuine link really about? And what is precisely ‘habitual’, ‘effective’ or ‘functional’ residence? It is argued that by supporting the ‘real connections’ as the most relevant standard, the European institutions may be paradoxically fuelling nationalistic misuses by member states of the ‘genuine link’ as a way to justify restrictive integration policies on the acquisition of nationality.

In short, the European Union, as we know it, no longer exists. The very foundations on which it was built are eroding. Shared memories of the Second World War have faded away – half the 15- and 16-year-olds in German high schools do not know that Hitler was a dictator, while a third believe that he protected human rights. The collapse of the Soviet Union has stripped away the geopolitical rationale for European unity. The democratic welfare state that was at the heart of the post-war political consensus is under siege by, among other things, sheer demographics. And the prosperity that bolstered the European project’s political legitimacy is vanishing. More than six out of ten Europeans believe that the lives of today’s children will be more difficult than those of people from their own generation. Against this background, how unthinkable is the EU’s disintegration? Should Europeans make the mistake of taking the Union for granted? Should they assume that the Union would not collapse because it should not collapse? Here, Europe’s capacity to learn from the Soviet precedent could play a crucial part. For the very survival of the EU may depend on its leaders’ ability to manage a similar mix of political, economic and psychological factors that were in play in the process of the Soviet collapse. The game of disintegration is primarily a political one driven much more by the perceptions and misperceptions of the political actors than simply by the constellation of the structural factors – institutional and economic.
