Com o objetivo de estudar o efeito de herbicidas aplicados em pré e pós-emergência, isolados e em combinações nas épocas seca e úmida, para o controle de melão-de-são-caetano (Momordica charantia) em área de cana-soca, desenvolveu-se um experimento no período de junho de 2007 a julho de 2008, na Fazenda Gabriela, no município de Bebedouro (SP). O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, em esquema de parcela subdividida. Nas parcelas foram estudados quatro tratamentos de herbicidas: imazapic (0,147 kg ha-1) e amicarbazone (1,4 kg ha-1), aplicados uma semana após a colheita da cana; clomazone mais hexazinone (0,8 kg ha-1 + 0,2 kg ha-1) e amicarbazone (1,4 kg ha-1), aplicados em agosto, aos 63 dias após a colheita da cana, pulverizados na época seca, além de tratamento sem aplicação. Nas subparcelas foram testadas as aplicações em pós-emergência de quatro tratamentos de herbicidas: mesotrione (0,192 kg ha-1), amicarbazone (1,4 kg ha-1), mesotrione mais amicarbazone (0,096 kg ha-1+ 0,7 kg ha-1) e 2,4-D (1,005 kg ha-1), na época úmida e a manutenção de tratamento sem herbicida. Para o controle de melão-de-são-caetano a aplicação de herbicidas na época úmida (período de chuvas) é obrigatória e desnecessária na época seca. Os herbicidas mesotrione e amicarbazone, isolados ou em mistura, aplicados na época úmida são eficazes no controle em pós-emergência das plantas e na inibição de novos fluxos de emergência de melão-de-são-caetano na época úmida.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar cinco cultivares de melão rendilhado com relação as características associadas à produção e qualidade dos frutos e quanto à aparência. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias-UNESP, Câmpus de Jaboticabal. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso com 5 tratamentos compostos pelas cultivares Sunrise; Aragon; Halest Best Jumbo; Nero e Bônus nº 2 e 4 repetições. Foram avaliados o peso médio dos frutos comercializáveis; diâmetro e comprimento médio de frutos; espessura média e coloração do mesocarpo e epicarpo; teor de sólidos solúveis (ºBrix), pH e acidez total. O híbrido Bônus nº 2 destacou-se com relação à produção média/m², peso médio dos frutos (Kg), espessura da polpa (cm) e ºBrix, características importantes para a produção e comercialização dos frutos de meloeiro, podendo ser indicado para cultivo em casa de vegetação.

O látex está sendo considerado o alergênico do ano 2000, tendo em vista que inúmeros indivíduos, principalmente profissionais da área de saúde e pacientes submetidos a várias intervenções diagnósticas e terapêuticas, estão freqüentemente expostos aos alérgenos do látex, presentes em produtos de borracha natural. As manifestações clínicas conseqüentes às reações alérgicas de hipersensibilidade imediata vão desde rinite, urticária, conjuntivite, angioedema, asma, até anafilaxia. Estudos recentes estão demonstrando que pacientes alérgicos ao látex desenvolvem concomitantemente sensibilização a certos alimentos de origem vegetal, especialmente frutas como papaia, figo, banana, abacate, kiwi, pêssego, abacaxi, melão e castanha, acreditando-se numa provável ocorrência de reações cruzadas entre os alérgenos do látex e destas frutas. Faz-se, então, uma revisão sobre a alergia ao látex, em particular sobre os grupos de risco, incluindo a presença de reatividade cruzada entre o látex e as frutas.

This work aimed at evaluate the effect of the fresh cut 'Orange Flesh' melon stored under modified atmosphere. The cubes of melons were sanitizationed with 100 mg L-1 of hypoclorite of sodium for one minute, washed, drained and wrapped with different concentrations of O-2 and CO2 in plastic bags of polyethylene (Nylon Polished). They were appraised every other day for ten days as regards the firmness, total pectin, soluble pectin and activity of the polifenoloxidase and peroxidase. At the end of the conservation period, it was verified that melons sustained the firmest texture of the vegetable products under modified atmosphere, and the concentration of 5%O-2 + 3% CO2 showed smaller content of total pectin and together with the concentration of 100% N-2 the smallest content of soluble pectin, the polifenoloxidase activity was not verified as well as of the peroxidase.

This investigation was conducted at UNESP, Jaboticabal campus, São Paulo, Brazil, from March 8 to June 21, 1999, to evaluate net melon yield and fruit quality, using soilless culture. 'Bônus 2' and 'Mission' cultivars were grown in a substrate of ground quartz or thick sand, in a randomized block experimental design. Leaf and stem dry matter production, leaf size and soluble solids content of the fruit, of 'Bônus 2' were superior to 'Mission'. There was a significant interaction for the evaluated characteristics of fruit dry mass production and yield. The largest accumulation of fruit dry mass and yield of the 'Bônus 2' cultivar (61,325 kg/ha) was observed when a substrate of ground quartz was used, while the yield for the 'Mission' cultivar was higher in a substrate of thick sand (42,125 kg/ha).

Four perylene derivatives (PTCD) have been used as transducing materials in taste sensors fabricated with nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited onto interdigitated gold electrodes. The Langmuir monolayers of PTCDs display considerable collapse pressures, with areas per molecule indicative of an edge-on or head-on arrangement for the molecules at the air/water interface. The sensing units for the electronic tongue were produced from 5-layer LB films of the four PTCDs, whose electrical response was characterized with impedance spectroscopy. The distinct responses of the PTCDs, attributed to differences in their molecular structures, allowed one to obtain a finger printing system that was able to distinguish tastes (salty, sweet, bitter and sour) at 1 μM concentrations, which, in some cases, are three orders of magnitude below the human threshold. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) data analysis, the electronic tongue also detected trace amounts of a pesticide and could distinguish among samples of ultrapure, distilled and tap water, and two brands of mineral water. © 2004 by American Scientific Publishers. This study aimed to verify the effects of four different minimum soil watler potentials (-30, -40, -50 e -70 kPa) and two different plastic tunnel positions (North-South and East-West) on net melon yield. The results showed that in the East-West position the yield and fruit weight were higher than in the North-South position. The highest yields of melon crop were obtained from -30 kPa. to -40 kPa minimum soil water potential.

Looking for the sustainability of a small farming enterprise, the present study focused the benefit of the biodigestor effluent resulting from the anaerobic fermentation of the bovine manure in a soilless melon plant experiment. The research was conducted in Jaboticabal, in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at latitude of 21° 15' 22'' S and a longitude of 48° 18' 58'' W. The melon plant (Cucumis melo L. cv Bonus n° 2) was grown with substrate, seedling obtained in 10/2003. An experimental design was adapted in a randomized block with 16 treatments and 5 replications in a factorial 4 x 4 (4 substrates and 4 nutrient solutions). The 4 substrates were made up of different proportions in volume of the blend composition taking into consideration both the solid part of the biodigestor effluent and the washed raw sand. The 4 nutrient solutions were made up of the liquid part of the biodigestor effluent (biofertilizer) in substitution to the mineral water soluble fertilizers. The addition of the effluent in the sand led to a more rapid vegetative growth, a more precoceous crop with heavier fruits and a much better yield of melon crop. The mineral water soluble fertilizers used in the cultivation of plants in substrates can be partially replaced by the biofertilizer studied.

With the objective of obtaining dry matter curves, and nitrogen and potassium accumulation in Piel de Sapo melon (Cucumis melo L.) hybrid Sancho, an experiment was conducted in Mossoró - RN in a randomized blocks design with three repetitions. Treatments consisted of doses in kg ha-1 of nitrogen: 0, 91, 140 and 184 and potassium: 0, 174, 260 and 346; which were applied by fertigation in depths of 281, 349 and 423mm. Stems, leaves and fruits were harvested 5 times at 28 to 70 days after transplantation, in intervals of 10 days for analyses of aerial dry matter, nitrogen, and potassium accumulation. Doses higher than 140 and 260 kg ha-1 of N and K respectively, did not induce greater accumulation of these nutrients increasing levels throughout the plant cycle. Nitrogen doses of 91 and 140 kg ha-1, potassium doses of 174 and 260 kg ha-1 as well as depth of 348mm provided higher accumulation of potassium in the plant.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality globally, and often leads to end-stage liver disease. The DNA damage checkpoint pathway induces cell cycle arrest for repairing DNA in response to DNA damage. HCV infection has been involved in this pathway. In this study, we assess the effects of HCV NS2 on DNA damage checkpoint pathway. We have observed that HCV NS2 induces ataxia-telangiectasia mutated checkpoint pathway by inducing Chk2, however, fails to activate the subsequent downstream pathway. Further study suggested that p53 is retained in the cytoplasm of HCV NS2 expressing cells, and p21 expression is not enhanced. We further observed that HCV NS2 expressing cells induce cyclin E expression and promote cell growth. Together these results suggested that HCV NS2 inhibits DNA damage response by altering the localization of p53, and may play a role in the pathogenesis of HCV infection. © 2013 Bitter et al.
