Ninety-three samples from DSDP Leg 95, Sites 612 and 613, were examined for ostracodes to aid in the study of paleoceanography and paleodepth. In total, more than 25 genera were recovered. The most abundant and diverse ostracode assemblages were from the middle Eocene at both sites; lower and upper Eocene and Pliocene-Pleistocene assemblages were less abundant and were dominated by only three or four species. The middle Eocene assemblages were the most diagnostic of paleoenvironment and suggest water depths of 1000 to 2000 m. These assemblages are similar to other middle Eocene assemblages known from the Caribbean and North Atlantic, and signify a relatively cosmopolitan fauna that inhabited moderately deep but relatively warm bottom waters.

Depth fluctuations of the lysocline and calcite compensation depth (CCD) through time were investigated at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 603, Leg 93. The CCD fell during the middle Miocene at the onset of the Western Boundary Undercurrent, correlated with seismic Horizon X. Subsequently deposited units show fluctuations of the dissolution curve. Major changes in dissolution facies correspond with lithologic boundaries.

A series of 22 sediment samples of Cretaceous and Cenozoic age from DSDP Holes 603, 603B, and 603C at the continental rise off the northeastern American coast near Cape Hatteras was investigated by organic geochemical methods including organic carbon determination, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of extractable hydrocarbons, and kerogen microscopy. An abundance of terrigenous organic matter, including larger coal particles (almost exclusively consisting of huminite/vitrinite macerals), is the dominant characteristic of the organofacies types at Site 603. Marine organic matter, mostly structurally degraded and in the form of fecal pellets, was preserved in the Valanginian laminated marls and in Cenomanian black claystone turbidites. Long-chain nalkanes reflect the terrigenous imprint in the nonaromatic hydrocarbon fractions, whereas a second maximum at lower carbon numbers in most cases is caused by the presence of more mature recycled organic matter. Abundant isoprenoid and steroid hydrocarbons were found in sediments containing mainly marine organic matter, whereas hopanoids reflect the ubiquitous microbial activity. The organic matter in the Site 603 sediments, in so far as it is not recycled, is thermally immature.

Benthic foraminiferal biofacies may vary independently of water depth and water mass; however, calibration of biofacies and stratigraphic ranges with independent paleodepth estimates allows reconstruction of age-depth patterns applicable throughout the deep Atlantic (Tjalsma and Lohmann, 1983). We have attempted to test these faunal calibrations in a continental margin setting, reconstructing Eocene benthic foraminiferal distributions along a dip section afforded by the New Jersey Transect (DSDP Sites 612, 108, 613). The following independent estimates of Eocene depths for the transect were obtained by "backtracking," "backstripping," and by assuming increasing depth downdip ("paleoslope"): Site 612, near the middle/lower bathyal boundary (about 1000 m); Site 108, in the middle bathyal zone (about 1600 m); and Site 613, near the lower bathyal/upper abyssal boundary (about 2000 m). Within uncertainties of backtracking (hundreds of meters), these estimates agree with estimates of paleodepth based on comparison of the New Jersey margin biofacies with other backtracked faunas. The stratigraphic ranges of many benthic taxa correspond to those found at other Atlantic DSDP sites. The major biofacies patterns show: (1) a depth dichotomy between an early to middle Eocene Nuttallides truempyidominated biofacies (greater than 2000 m) and a Lenticulina-Osangularia-Alabamina cf. dissonata biofacies (1000- 2000 m); and (2) a difference between a middle and a late Eocene biofacies at Site 612. The faunal boundary at about 2000 m, between bathyal and abyssal zones, occurs not only on the margin, but also throughout the deep Atlantic. The faunal change between the middle and late Eocene at Site 612 was due to a decrease of Lenticulina spp., the local disappearance of N. truempyi, and establishment of a Bulimina alazanensis-Gyroidinoides spp. biofacies. Although this change could be attributed to local paleoceanographic or water-depth changes, we argue that it is the bathyal expression of a global deep-sea benthic foraminiferal change which occurred across the middle/late Eocene boundary.

Over most of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean a hiatus is present between the lower upper Maastrichtian and lowermost Tertiary deposits; sedimentation resumed ~200 ka (upper zone Pla) after the K-T boundary. Current-bedded volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Sites 536 and 540, which were previously interpreted as impact-generated megawave deposits of K-T boundary age, are biostratigraphically of pre-K-T boundary age and probably represent turbidite or gravity-How deposits. The top 10 to 20 cm of this deposit at Site 536 contains very rare Micula prinsii, the uppermost Maastrichtian index taxon, as well as low values of Ir (0.6 pbb) and rare Ni-rich spinels. These indicate possible reworking of sediments of K-T boundary age at the hiatus. Absence of continuous sediment accumulation across the K-T boundary in the 16 Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sections examined prevents their providing evidence of impact-generated megawave deposits in this region. Our study indicates that the most complete trans-K-T stratigraphic records may be found in onshore marine sections of Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti. The stratigraphic records of these areas should be investigated further for evidence of impact deposits.
