Partindo de ciclopentadieno, ciclohexadieno, p-benzoquinona e 2,5-dibromo-pbenzoquinona, os adutos 1, 5, 30 e 31 foram sintetizados. Os adutos 1, 5 e 30 foram utilizados como produtos de partida para a síntese de 13 (treze) novos compostos, em sua maioria com potenciais características para apresentarem atividade biológica inibidora de glicosidases e reguladora da liberação de Insulina no sangue. O aduto 31 é inédito na literatura até o momento. Cinco novas propostas de mecanismos são apresentadas. Os álcoois racêmicos 6 e 29 foram submetidos a reações de transesterificação catalisadas por lipase de Pseudomonas cepacia em diferentes preparações e seus enantiômeros separados com enantiosseletividade (E) maior que 100 em todos os casos. Este processo resultou, também, na obtenção dos respectivos acetatos 43 e 44 enantiomericamente puros e com excelentes rendimentos químicos. Os compostos 6, 29 e 34 depois de terem suas estruturas moleculares resolvidas através dos métodos espectroscópicos de rotina, tiveram suas estruturas moleculares calculadas pelo método ab initio e por Funcionais de Densidade. As geometrias otimizadas foram submetidas ao método GIAO para o cálculo dos tensores de blindagem magnética isotrópica. Estes cálculos mostraram-se eficazes na descrição dos deslocamentos químicos da maioria dos átomos, incluindo os dos anéis ciclopropanos presentes nas estruturas moleculares de cada composto. Algumas dificuldades foram encontradas para a descrição do sistema vinílico halogenado dos álcoois 6 e 29. Foram utilizadas moléculas modelo para verificar a extensão de tais dificuldades.

Several diseases involve the nervous system of cattle, among which infections with Rabies Virus and Bovine Herpes Virus 5 (BoHV-5) are noteworthy. In order to detect seropositive animals to BoHV-5, 156 Brahman-Zebu bovines blood samples from Colombia's eastern plains were analyzed through seroneutralization assay; the area has a history of animals dying with nervous symptoms and which rule out the disease of rabies. All animals were over one year old and randomly selected from two different herds reporting no vaccination for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis in a period exceeding one year. Results indicated seropositivity for BoHV-5 in 91 cases (58.4%), of which 88 were also seropositive for bovine herpes virus 1 (BoHV-1), while 41 were seronegative for both agents. 22/64 seronegative cases for BoHV-5 were seropositive for BoHV-1 and 2/43 seronegative cases for BoHV-1 were seropositive for BoHV-5, and consequently, these animals could be only infected by encephalitis herpes virus. With these initial findings, emphasis its placed on the need establish the true impact of the disease in Colombia and proposes the epidemiological surveillance of cattle in the region studied in order to establish mechanisms for control of viral infection.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a associação entre os parâmetros clinicolaboratoriais e alteração morfológica de biópsias renais em crianças com síndrome nefrótica. MÉTODOS: Os dados foram obtidos dos prontuários médicos de 43 crianças com síndrome nefrótica submetidas a biópsia renal. RESULTADOS: Vinte e oito pacientes eram do sexo masculino (65,1%), idades entre 1,4 a 12 anos (média de 4,7±3,2). Quarenta e dois pacientes (97,7%) apresentaram edema; 83,7%, oligúria e 32,5%, hipertensão arterial. A média de proteinúria foi 15,3g/1,73m²SC/dia e 55,8% apresentaram hematúria microscópica. As biópsias renais mostraram: glomerulonefrite proliferativa mesangial (GNPM) em 37,2%, glomeruloesclerose segmentar e focal (GESF) em 27,9%, alterações glomerulares mínimas (LM) em 25,6%, glomerulonefrite membranoproliferativa (GNMP) em 7% e glomerulonefrite membranosa (GNM) em 2,3%. Vinte e seis pacientes (60,5%) apresentaram resistência ao corticosteróide. Idade, sexo, hipertensão arterial, oligúria, uréia e creatinina séricas não mostraram diferenças estatísticas significativas entre os pacientes com GNPM, GESF e LM. Os pacientes com GNPM e GESF apresentaram maior freqüência de hematúria microscópica (p < 0,003 e p < 0,03; respectivamente). Os pacientes com GESF apresentaram maiores níveis de proteinúria (p < 0,01 versus LM e p < 0,05 versus GNPM). Os pacientes com LM apresentaram sensibilidade ao corticosteróide (p < 0,001 versus GESF e p = 0,047 versus GNPM). CONCLUSÕES: Sexo, idade, presença de hipertensão arterial ou oligúria e níveis séricos de uréia e creatinina não auxiliaram na diferenciação entre pacientes com GNPM, GESF e LM. Os pacientes com LM apresentaram sensibilidade a corticosteróides e menos probabilidade de apresentar hematúria microscópica. Pacientes com GESF apresentaram maiores níveis de proteinúria.

A case of severe lateral luxation and root fracture in upper incisors is reported. Treatment involved the repositioning and fixation of the injured teeth and endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide. The importance of long-term follow-up is emphasized.

Purpose: To verify the prevalence of malocclusion and the influence of harmful oral habits on deciduous dentition in 5- and 6-year-old children enrolled in Brazilian public elementary schools during 2010.Materials and Methods: Exams were conducted in 1385 children from 56 Brazilian elementary schools using the method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for epidemiological surveys on oral health. Information about the type of arch, social and economic data and harmful oral habits of the children were collected through a structured questionnaire.Results: In relation to canine occlusion, a high prevalence of Class I (74.5%), followed by Class II (19.4%), was found. Among all participants, 22% showed high overjet, 7.8% showed edge-to-edge occlusion and 2.3% showed anterior crossbite. In relation to overbite, 13.2% had short overbite, 14.3% open bite and 16.8% high overbite. The presence of posterior crossbite occurred in 14.6% of children. Maxillae predominantly exhibited the type I arch (67.9%) and mandibles predominantly exhibited type II (51.7%). In relation to harmful oral habits, 43.4% used a pacifier, 84.8% used a bottle and finger sucking was reported by 17.2%.Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of malocclusion associated with oral habits harmful to deciduous dentition.

The in vitro cytogenetic effects of the 43-kDa molecular mass exocellular glycoproteic component (GP 43) from Paracoccidioides brasiliensis were studied in cultures from human lymphocytes. The sample included 10 healthy, white, non-smoking, non-related males (mean age of 31.3 ± 8.2 years). Besides the control, three concentrations of GP 43 (0.125, 1.25 and 5 μg/ml) were used. In each group, around 1000 cells were examined in search of chromosome aberrations, and 30,000 metaphases were analysed for the determination of the Mitotic Index. The authors conclude that GP 43 most probably causes inhibition of the cell cycle and aneugenic and clastogenic effects.

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of transitioning patients whose intraocular pressure (IOP) had been insufficiently controlled on prostaglandin analog (PGA) monotherapy to treatment with travoprost 0.004%/timolol 0.5% fixed combination with benzalkonium chloride (TTFC). Methods: This prospective, multicenter, open-label, historical controlled, single-arm study transitioned patients who had primary open-angle glaucoma, pigment dispersion glaucoma, or ocular hypertension and who required further IOP reduction from PGA monotherapy to oncedaily treatment with TTFC for 12 weeks. IOP and safety (adverse events, corrected distance visual acuity, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy) were assessed at baseline, week 4, and week 12. A solicited ocular symptom survey was administered at baseline and at week 12. Patients and investigators reported their medication preference at week 12. Results: Of 65 patients enrolled, 43 had received prior travoprost therapy and 22 had received prior nontravoprost therapy (n = 18, bimatoprost; n = 4, latanoprost). In the total population, mean IOP was significantly reduced from baseline (P = 0.000009), showing a 16.8% reduction after 12 weeks of TTFC therapy. In the study subgroups, mean IOP was significantly reduced from baseline to week 12 (P = 0.0001) in the prior travoprost cohort (19.0% reduction) and in the prior nontravoprost cohort (13.1% reduction). Seven mild, ocular, treatment-related adverse events were reported. Of the ten ocular symptom questions, eight had numerically lower percentages with TTFC compared with prior PGA monotherapy and two had numerically higher percentages with TTFC (dry eye symptoms and ocular stinging/burning). At week 12, TTFC was preferred over prior therapy for 84.2% of patients (48 of 57) by the patients themselves, and for 94.7% of patients (54 of 57) by their physicians. Conclusion: When TTFC replaced PGA monotherapy in patients whose IOP had been uncontrolled, the outcome was a significant reduction in IOP and an acceptable safety and tolerability profile. The objective of this study was to compare a GnRH-based to an estrogen/progesterone (E2/P4)-based protocol for estrous cycle synchronization and fixed timed artificial insemination (TAI), both designed for synchronization of ovulation and to reduce the period from follicular emergence until ovulation in cows with a synchronized follicular wave. A total of 1,190 lactating Holstein cows (primiparous: n = 685 and multiparous: n = 505) yielding 26.5 ± 0.30 kg of milk/d at 177 ± 5.02 d in milk were randomly assigned to receive one of the following programs: 5-d Cosynch protocol [d -8: controlled internal drug release (CIDR) + GnRH; d -3: CIDR removal + PGF2α; d -2: PGF2α; d 0: TAI + GnRH] or E2/P4 protocol (d -10: CIDR + estradiol benzoate; d -3: PGF2α; d -2: CIDR removal + estradiol cypionate; d 0: TAI). Rectal temperature and circulating progesterone (P4) were measured on d -3, -2, 0 (TAI), and 7. The estrous cycle was considered to be synchronized when P4 was ≥1.0 ng/mL on d 7 in cows that had luteolysis (P4 ≤0.4 ng/mL on d 0). To evaluate the effects of heat stress, cows were classified by number of heat stress events: 0, 1, and 2-or-more measurements of elevated body temperature (≥39.1°C). Pregnancy success (pregnancy per artificial insemination, P/AI) was determined at d 32 and 60 after TAI. The cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol had increased circulating P4 at the time of PGF2α injection (2.66 ± 0.13 vs. 1.66 ± 0.13 ng/mL). The cows in the E2/P4 protocol were more likely to be detected in estrus (62.8 vs. 43.4%) compared with the cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol, and expression of estrus improved P/AI in both treatments. The cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol had greater percentage of synchronized estrous cycle (78.2%), compared with cows in the E2/P4 protocol (70.7%). On d 60, the E2/P4 protocol tended to improve P/AI (20.7 vs. 16.7%) and reduced pregnancy loss from 32 to 60 d (11.0 vs. 19.6%), compared with the 5-d Cosynch protocol. In cows with their estrous cycle synchronized, the E2/P4 protocol had greater P/AI (25.6 vs. 17.7%) on d 60 and lower pregnancy loss from 32 to 60 d (6.7 vs. 21.7%) compared with cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol. Follicle diameter affected pregnancy loss from 32 to 60 d only in the cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol, with smaller follicles resulting in greater pregnancy loss. Pregnancy per AI at d 60 was different between protocols in the cows with 2 or more measurements of heat stress (5-d Cosynch = 12.2% vs. E2/P4 = 22.8%), but not in the cows without or with 1 heat stress measurement. In conclusion, the 5-d Cosynch protocol apparently produced better estrous cycle synchronization than the E2/P4 protocol but did not improve P/AI. The potential explanation for these results is that increased E2 concentrations during the periovulatory period can improve pregnancy success and pregnancy maintenance, and this effect appears to be greatest in heat-stressed cows when circulating E2 may be reduced. © 2013 American Dairy Science Association.
