By using observables that only depend on charged particles (tracks), one can efficiently suppress pileup contamination at the LHC. Such measurements are not infrared safe in perturbation theory, so any calculation of track-based observables must account for hadronization effects. We develop a formalism to perform these calculations in QCD, by matching partonic cross sections onto new nonperturbative objects called track functions which absorb infrared divergences. The track function Ti(x) describes the energy fraction x of a hard parton i which is converted into charged hadrons. We give a field-theoretic definition of the track function and derive its renormalization group evolution, which is in excellent agreement with the pythia parton shower. We then perform a next-to-leading order calculation of the total energy fraction of charged particles in e+e−→ hadrons. To demonstrate the implications of our framework for the LHC, we match the pythia parton shower onto a set of track functions to describe the track mass distribution in Higgs plus one jet events. We also show how to reduce smearing due to hadronization fluctuations by measuring dimensionless track-based ratios.

A detailed microdosimetric characterization of the M. D. Anderson 42 MeV (p,Be) fast neutron beam was performed using the techniques of microdosimetry and a 1/2 inch diameter Rossi proportional counter. These measurements were performed at 5, 15, and 30 cm depths on the central axis, 3 cm inside, and 3 cm outside the field edge for 10 $\times$ 10 and 20 $\times$ 20 cm field sizes. Spectra were also measured at 5 and 15 cm depth on central axis for a 6 $\times$ 6 cm field size. Continuous slowing down approximation calculations were performed to model the nuclear processes that occur in the fast neutron beam. Irradiation of the CR-39 was performed using a tandem electrostatic accelerator for protons of 10, 6, and 3 MeV and alpha particles of 15, 10, and 7 MeV incident energy on target at angles of incidence from 0 to 85 degrees. The critical angle as well as track etch rate and normal incidence diameter versus linear energy transfer (LET) were obtained from these measurements. The bulk etch rate was also calculated from these measurements. Dose response of the material was studied, and the angular distribution of charged particles created by the fast neutron beam was measured with CR-39. The efficiency of CR-39 was calculated versus that of the Rossi chamber, and an algorithm was devised for derivation of LET spectra from the major and minor axis dimensions of the observed tracks. The CR-39 was irradiated in the same positions as the Rossi chamber, and the derived spectra were compared directly. ^

A search for direct chargino production in anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenarios is performed in p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV using 4.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In these models, the lightest chargino is predicted to have a lifetime long enough to be detected in the tracking detectors of collider experiments. This analysis explores such models by searching for chargino decays that result in tracks with few associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. The transverse-momentum spectrum of candidate tracks is found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model background processes and constraints on chargino properties are obtained.

A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results.

Many extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of heavy particles with long lifetimes. In this Letter, results are presented of a search for events containing one or more such particles, which decay at a significant distance from their production point, using a final state containing charged hadrons and an associated muon. This analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb(-1) collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are interpreted in the context of R-parity violating supersymmetric scenarios. No events in the signal region are observed and limits are set on the production cross section for pair production of supersymmetric particles, multiplied by the square of the branching fraction for a neutralino to decay to charged hadrons and a muon, based on the scenario where both of the produced supersymmetric particles give rise to neutralinos that decay in this way. However, since the search strategy is based on triggering on and reconstructing the decay products of individual long-lived particles, irrespective of the rest of the event, these limits can easily be reinterpreted in scenarios with different numbers of long-lived particles per event. The limits are presented as a function of neutralino lifetime, and for a range of squark and neutralino masses.

A search is presented for direct chargino production based on a disappearing-track signature using 20.3  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s√=8  TeV collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) models, the lightest chargino is nearly mass degenerate with the lightest neutralino and its lifetime is long enough to be detected in the tracking detectors by identifying decays that result in tracks with no associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. Some models with supersymmetry also predict charginos with a significant lifetime. This analysis attains sensitivity for charginos with a lifetime between 0.1 and 10 ns, and significantly surpasses the reach of the LEP experiments. No significant excess above the background expectation is observed for candidate tracks with large transverse momentum, and constraints on chargino properties are obtained. In the AMSB scenarios, a chargino mass below 270 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Given a short-arc optical observation with estimated angle-rates, the admissible region is a compact region in the range / range-rate space defined such that all likely and relevant orbits are contained within it. An alternative boundary value problem formulation has recently been proposed where range / range hypotheses are generated with two angle measurements from two tracks as input. In this paper, angle-rate information is reintroduced as a means to eliminate hypotheses by bounding their constants of motion before a more computationally costly Lambert solver or differential correction algorithm is run.

In this paper we present the results from the coverage and the orbit determination accuracy simulations performed within the recently completed ESA study “Assessment Study for Space Based Space Surveillance (SBSS) Demonstration System” (Airbus Defence and Space consortium). This study consisted in investigating the capability of a space based optical sensor (SBSS) orbiting in low Earth orbit (LEO) to detect and track objects in GEO (geosynchronous orbit), MEO (medium Earth orbit) and LEO and to determinate and improve initial orbits from such observations. Space based systems may achieve better observation conditions than ground based sensors in terms of astrometric accuracy, detection coverage, and timeliness. The primary observation mode of the proposed SBSS demonstrator is GEO surveillance, i.e. the systematic search and detection of unknown and known objects. GEO orbits are specific and unique orbits from dynamical point of view. A space-based sensor may scan the whole GEO ring within one sidereal day if the orbit and pointing directions are chosen properly. For an efficient survey, our goal was to develop a leak-proof GEO fence strategy. Collaterally, we show that also MEO, LEO and other (GTO,Molniya, etc.) objects would be possible to observe by the system and for a considerable number of LEO objects to down to size of 1 cm we can obtain meaningful statistical data for improvement and validation of space debris environment models

Aims: Patient management following elective cranial surgery varies between different neurosurgical institutions. Early routine postoperative cranial computed tomography (CT) is often performed while keeping patients sedated and ventilated for several hours. We hypothesize that fast track management without routine CT scanning, i.e., early extubation within one hour allowing neurological monitoring, is safe and does not increase the rate of return to OR compared with published data. Methods: We prospectively screened 1118 patients with cranial procedures performed at our department over a period of two years. 420 patients with elective brain surgery older than 18 years with no history of prior cranial surgery were included. Routine neurosurgical practice as it is performed at our department was not altered for this observational study. Fast track management was aimed for all cases, extubated and awake patients were further monitored. CT scanning within 48 hours after surgery was not performed except for unexpected neurological deterioration. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01987648). Results: 420 elective craniotomies were performed for 310 supra- and 110 infratentorial lesions. 398 patients (94.8%) were able to be extubated within 1 hour, 21 (5%) within 6 hours, and 1 patient (0.2%) was extubated 9 hours after surgery. Emergency CT within 48 hours was performed for 36 patients (8.6%, 26 supra- and 10 infratentorial cases) due to unexpected neurological worsening. Of these 36 patients 5 had to return to the OR (hemorrhage in 3, swelling in 2 cases). Return to OR rate of all included cases was 1.2%. This rate compares favorably with 1-4% as quoted in the current literature. No patient returned to the OR without prior CT imaging. Of 398 patients extubated within one hour 2 (0.5%) returned to the OR. Patients who couldn’t be extubated within the first hour had a higher risk of returning to the OR (3 of 22, i.e., 14%). Overall 30-day mortality was 0.2% (1 patient). Conclusions: Early extubation and CT imaging performed only for patients with unexpected neurological worsening after elective craniotomy procedures is safe and does not increase patient mortality or the return to OR rate. With this fast track approach early postoperative cranial CT for detection of postoperative complications in the absence of an unexpected neurological finding is not justified. We tested the assumption that ego depletion would affect the sprint start in a sample of N = 38 athletes without track and field experience in an experiment by applying a mixed between- (depletion vs. non-depletion) within- (T1: before manipulation of ego depletion vs. T2: after manipulation of ego depletion) subjects design. We assumed that ego depletion would increase the possibility for a false start, as regulating the impulse to initiate the sprinting movement too soon before the starting signal requires self-control. In line with our assumption, we found a significant interaction as there was only a significant increase in the number of false starts from T1 to T2 for the depletion group while this was not the case for the non-depletion group. We conclude that ego depletion has a detrimental influence on the sprint start in athletes without track and field experience.

Passive positioning systems produce user location information for third-party providers of positioning services. Since the tracked wireless devices do not participate in the positioning process, passive positioning can only rely on simple, measurable radio signal parameters, such as timing or power information. In this work, we provide a passive tracking system for WiFi signals with an enhanced particle filter using fine-grained power-based ranging. Our proposed particle filter provides an improved likelihood function on observation parameters and is equipped with a modified coordinated turn model to address the challenges in a passive positioning system. The anchor nodes for WiFi signal sniffing and target positioning use software defined radio techniques to extract channel state information to mitigate multipath effects. By combining the enhanced particle filter and a set of enhanced ranging methods, our system can track mobile targets with an accuracy of 1.5m for 50% and 2.3m for 90% in a complex indoor environment. Our proposed particle filter significantly outperforms the typical bootstrap particle filter, extended Kalman filter and trilateration algorithms.
