Use of engineered landfills for the disposal of industrial wastes is currently a common practice. Bentonite is attracting a greater attention not only as capping and lining materials in landfills but also as buffer and backfill materials for repositories of high-level nuclear waste around the world. In the design of buffer and backfill materials, it is important to know the swelling pressures of compacted bentonite with different electrolyte solutions. The theoretical studies on swell pressure behaviour are all based on Diffuse Double Layer (DDL) theory. To establish a relation between the swell pressure and void ratio of the soil, it is necessary to calculate the mid-plane potential in the diffuse part of the interacting ionic double layers. The difficulty in these calculations is the elliptic integral involved in the relation between half space distance and mid plane potential. Several investigators circumvented this problem using indirect methods or by using cumbersome numerical techniques. In this work, a novel approach is proposed for theoretical estimations of swell pressures of fine-grained soil from the DDL theory. The proposed approach circumvents the complex computations in establishing the relationship between mid-plane potential and diffused plates’ distances in other words, between swell pressure and void ratio.

Bentonite clays are proven to be attractive as buffer and backfill material in high-level nuclear waste repositories around the world. A quick estimation of swelling pressures of the compacted bentonites for different clay-water-electrolyte interactions is essential in the design of buffer and backfill materials. The theoretical studies on the swelling behavior of bentonites are based on diffuse double layer (DDL) theory. To establish theoretical relationship between void ratio and swelling pressure (e versus P), evaluation of elliptic integral and inverse analysis are unavoidable. In this paper, a novel procedure is presented to establish theoretical relationship of e versus P based on the Gouy-Chapman method. The proposed procedure establishes a unique relationship between electric potentials of interacting and non-interacting diffuse clay-water-electrolyte systems. A procedure is, thus, proposed to deduce the relation between swelling pressures and void ratio from the established relation between electric potentials. This approach is simple and alleviates the need for elliptic integral evaluation and also the inverse analysis. Further, application of the proposed approach to estimate swelling pressures of four compacted bentonites, for example, MX 80, Febex, Montigel and Kunigel V1, at different dry densities, shows that the method is very simple and predicts solutions with very good accuracy. Moreover, the proposed procedure provides continuous distributions of e versus P and thus it is computationally efficient when compared with the existing techniques.

We compare the performance of a typical hole transport layer for organic photovoltaics (OPVs), Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thin film with a series of PEDOT:PSS layers doped with silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) of various size distributions. These hybrid layers have attracted great attention as buffer layers in plasmonic OPVs, although there is no report up to date on their isolated performance. In the present study we prepared a series of PEDOT:PSS layers sandwiched between indium tin oxide (ITO) and gold (Au) electrodes. Ag NPs were deposited on top of the ITO by electron beam evaporation followed by spin coating of PEDOT:PSS. Electrical characterization performed in the dark showed linear resistive behavior for all the samples; lower resistance was observed for the hybrid ones. It was found that the resistivity of the samples decreases with increasing the particle's size. A substantial increase of the electric field between the ITO and the Au electrodes was seen through the formation of current paths through the Ag NPs. A striking observation is the slight increase in the slope of the current density versus voltage curves when measured under illumination for the case of the plasmonic layers, indicating that changes in the electric field in the vicinity of the NP due to plasmonic excitation is a non-vanishing factor. © 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V. A flat, fully strain-relaxed Si0.72Ge0.28 thin film was grown on Si (1 0 0) substrate with a combination of thin low-temperature (LT) Ge and LT-Si0.72Ge0.28 buffer layers by ultrahigh vacuum chemical vapor deposition. The strain relaxation ratio in the Si0.72Ge0.28 film was enhanced up to 99% with the assistance of three-dimensional Ge islands and point defects introduced in the layers, which furthermore facilitated an ultra-low threading dislocation density of 5 x 10(4) cm (2) for the top SiGe film. More interestingly, no cross-hatch pattern was observed on the SiGe surface and the surface root-mean-square roughness was less than 2 nm. The temperature for the growth of LT-Ge layer was optimized to be 300 degrees C. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influences of AlN buffer thickness on the optical and the crystalline properties of metalorganic chemical vapor deposition wurtzite GaN layers on Si(I 11) substrate have been investigated. High-resolution X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurement reveal that the thickness of AlN buffer exerts a strong influence on the distribution of dislocation and stress in GaN epilayer. The evidence is further reinforced by atomic force microscopic observation of AlN nucleation process. The optimum thickness of AlN buffer to effectively suppress Si diffusion has been determined by secondary-ion mass spectroscopy to be in the range of 13-20 nm. In addition, it is found that appropriate Si diffusion in AlN buffer helps to compensate the tensile strain in GaN, which subsequently improves the optical quality of GaN on Si(I 1, 1), and reduces the cracks over the GaN surface. Influences of reactor pressure of GaN buffer layers on morphological evolution of GaN grown by MOCVD

The morphological evolution of GaN thin films grown on sapphire by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition was demonstrated to depend strongly on the growth pressure of GaN nucleation layer (NL). For the commonly used two-step growth process, a change in deposition pressure of NL greatly influences the growth mode and morphological evolution of the following GaN epitaxy. By means of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscope, it is shown that the initial density and the spacing of nucleation sites on the NL and subsequently the growth mode of FIT GaN epilayer may be directly controlled by tailoring the initial low temperature NL growth pressure. A mode is proposed to explain the TD reduction for NL grown at relatively high reactor pressure. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

InAs self-organized quantum dots (QDs) grown on annealed low-temperature GaAs (LT-GaAs) epi-layers and on normal temperature GaAs buffer layers have been compared by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. TEM evidences that self-organized QDs were formed with a smaller size and larger density than that on normal GaAs buffer layers. It is discussed that local tensile surface strain regions that are preferred sites for InAs islands nucleation are increased in the case of the LT-GaAs buffer layers due to exhibiting As precipitates. The PL spectra show a blue-shifted peak energy with narrower linewidth revealing the improvement of optical properties of the QDs grown on LT-GaAs epi-layers. It suggests us a new way to improve the uniformity and change the energy band structure of the InAs self-organized QDs by carefully controlling the surface stress states of the LT-GaAs buffers on which the QDs are formed. GaSb films with AlSb/GaSb compound buffer layers were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates. The crystal quality and optical properties were studied by high resolution transition electron microscopy and low temperature photoluminescence spectra (PL), respectively. It was found that the AlSb/GaSb compound buffer layers can restrict the dislocations into GaSb epilayers. The intensity of PL spectra of GaSb layer becomes large with the increasing the periods of AlSb/GaSb superlattices, indicating that the optical quality of GaSb films is improved.

We demonstrate highly efficient inverted bottom-emission organic light-emitting diodes (IBOLEDs) by using cesium hydroxide (CsOH) doped tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) as the electron injection layer on indium tin oxide cathode, which could significantly enhance the electron injection, resulting in a large increase in luminance and efficiency. The maximum luminance, current efficiency, and power efficiency reach 21 000 cd/cm(2), 6.5 cd/A, and 3.5 lm/W, respectively, which are 40%-50% higher in efficiency than that of IBOLEDs with cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3) doped Alq(3) as the electron injection layer, where the efficiencies are only 4.5 cd/A and 2.2 lm/W.

Colloidal Au particles have been deposited on the gold electrode through layer-by-layer self-assembly using cysteamine as cross-linkers. Self-assembly of colloidal Au on the gold electrode resulted in ail easier attachment of antibody, larger electrode surface and ideal electrode behavior. The redox reactions of [Fe(CN)(6)]-/[Fe(CN)(6)](3-) on the gold surface were blocked due to antibody immobilization, which were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The interaction of antigen with grafted antibody recognition layers was carried out by soaking the modified electrode into a phosphate buffer at pH 7.0 with various concentrations of antigen at 37degreesC for 30 min. Further, an amplification strategy to use biotin conjugated antibody was introduced for improving the sensitivity of impedance measurements. Thus, the sensor based oil this immobilization method exhibits a large linear dynamic range, from 5 - 400 mug/L for detection of Human IgG. The detection limit is about 0.5 mug/L.

Tetrakis (N-methylpyridyl) porphyrinato] cobalt (CoTMPyP) and 1:12 silicotungstic acid (SiW12) were alternately deposited on a 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA)-modified glassy carbon electrode through a layer-by-layer method. The resulting organic-inorganic hybrid films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. We proved that the prepared multilayer films are uniform and stable. SiW12-containing multilayer films (SiW12 as the outermost layer) exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The kinetic constants for HER were comparatively investigated at different layers Of SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer film-modified electrodes by hydrogen evolution voltammetry. In addition, rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetric methods confirm that SiW12/CoTMPyP (CoTMPyP as the outermost layer) multilayer films catalyze almost a two-electron reduction of O-2 to H2O2 in pH 1-6 buffer solutions. Furthermore, P2W18/CoTMPyP films were also assembled, and their catalytic activity for HER is very different from that Of SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer films.

Rotating disk electrode (RDE) voltammetry and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetry confirm that P2W18/CoTMPyP multilayer films can catalyze the four-electron almost reduction of O-2 to water in pH > 4.0 buffer solution, while SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer films catalyze about two-electron reduction of O-2 to H2O2 in pH 1 - 6 buffer solutions. The kinetic constants for O-2 reduction were comparatively investigated at P2W18/CoTMPyP and SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer films electrodes.

Electrochemically induced three conformational transitions of calf thymus DNA from B-10.4 to Z(10.2)-DNA and from B-10.2 to B-10.4 and to C-DNA in 10 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.21) at glassy carbon electrode are found and studied by in situ circular dichroism (CD) thin layer spectroelectrochemistry with singular value decomposition least square (SVDLS) analysis. It indicates that the so-called B-10.2 form and the C-form of DNA may be composed of B-10.4 and left-A DNA and of B-10.4 and right-A DNA, respectively. The irreversible electrochemical reduction of adenine and cytosine groups in the DNA molecule is studied by UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry. Some electrochemical parameters alphan = 0.17, E-0' = -0.70 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), and the standard heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant, k(0) = 1.8 x 10(-5) cm s(-1) are obtained by double logarithmic analysis and non-linear regression. EVALUATION OF A FOAM BUFFER TARGET DESIGN FOR SPATIALLY UNIFORM ABLATION OF LASER-IRRADIATED PLASMAS
Resumo:
Experimental observations are presented demonstrating that the use of a gold-coated foam layer on the surface of a laser-driven target substantially reduces its hydrodynamic breakup during the acceleration phase. The data suggest that this results from enhanced thermal smoothing during the early-time imprint stage of the interaction. The target's kinetic energy and the level of parametric instability growth are shown to remain essentially unchanged from that of a conventionally driven target.

The creation of Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) offers the Consumer Electronics industry a mechanism to truly unwire consumer products, leading to portability and ease of installation as never seen before. WPAN's can offer data-rates exceeding those that are required to convey high quality broadcast video, thus users can easily connect to high quality video for multimedia presentations in education, libraries, advertising, or have a wireless connection at home. There have been many WPAN proposals, but this paper concentrates on ECMA-368 as this standard has the largest industrial and implementers' forum backing. This paper discusses the technology behind ECMA-368, the required numerical bandwidth, buffer memory requirements and implementation considerations while concentrating on supporting all the offered data-rates'.
